Tucked away in one of Bangkok’s most upscale neighbourhoods, the tranquil Japandi-style Room Langsuan is a sleek and neutral space that accentuates the owner’s collection of designer artworks and furniture. Inspired by minimalist warehouse interiors, OPH Architects’s Pilin Hongwittayakorn used a simple combination of a crisp white palette and light blockboard, an engineered plywood, throughout. A custom joinery piece doubles as a TV cabinet and shoe storage at the entrance, while matte white laminate unifies the entrance, kitchen, and floor-to-ceiling storage cabinets. Blockboard walls and ceilings zone out the Japanese-inspired elevated sleeping platform in the bedroom, which leads into the monochromatic black bathroom offering a dramatic contrast to the rest of the apartment.

00:01The apartment is located in Soiton Son, in the center of Bangkok.
00:06It stands behind a popular park called Lumpini Park.
00:12I named the project Lump Rang Son, which means Lump behind the park.
00:18Once we saw the owner's furniture, which had a bold and unique design,
00:23the main idea is time to create the space as neutral as it can.
00:27By using modest materials, the right tone material and the color scheme,
00:32I tried to let the artwork and the furniture be the focus point in the space.
00:38My name is Thailin Hongwitiya Goy.
00:41I'm the founder of the OPH Architect in Bangkok, Thailand.
00:50The location is extremely peaceful alley in the middle of Busting City.
00:58The building was completed in 2021.
01:02We completed the renovation in early 2023.
01:07Our clients loved collecting designer pieces, artworks and design furniture.
01:12So the client was looking for a complimentary space to display them.
01:16At the same time, they wanted a comfortable living space in a compact room.
01:24The apartment was new and it holds a typical layout of an apartment for sale using typical materials.
01:32When we walk into the room, we see the kitchen in the living area with a small balcony.
01:39The bedroom and the bathroom are through a door from the living area.
01:44We did not change the layout of the room.
01:46We just added more storage in the entrance, the living area and in the bedroom.
01:52Also, we create the bed platform for the sleeping space.
01:59The entrance opens to the kitchen, which connects to the open space living area.
02:06The entrance and living area are 3 meters tall, which helps to create the large area's filling.
02:14There is a built-in bench for shoes made from box boards, a type of light plywood, giving a comforting
02:21feeling to the room.
02:24When approaching the living area, the space is filled in with natural light from large windows.
02:31We changed the floor of the entire apartment from the engineering wooden floor to the light gay rubber sheet.
02:39The owner used the old engineering wooden floor in his other property so it didn't go to waste.
02:46We removed the old wallpaper and painted the wall white to create a clean and seamless space.
02:53There is a dark grey B&B Italian modular sofa as the main display piece.
02:59Extra pieces can be added in the future to create an L-shaped sofa.
03:05The shoe bench cabinet at the entrance of the area was extended to become the TV space in front of
03:11the sofa.
03:11It helps to transition the space from the entrance to the living room.
03:16At the moment, the owner doesn't need a TV so he displays his artwork but we left space for a
03:23TV if needed in the future.
03:28There is access to small balcony with a city view.
03:35There is a back top table with various designer chairs and a pendant lamp above the table that helps define
03:42the space of the dining area.
03:45Along the wall, there are wide built-in 4-2 ceiling cabinets.
03:49They provide a lot of storage space for the owner.
03:56In the corner area, there is an integrated open wooden shelf.
04:00When one of the doors are open, it creates a comfortable office space for the client to work from home.
04:06The open door also acts as a privacy scheme when working.
04:11The kitchen has an L-shaped counter.
04:14The arrangement includes a hidden refrigerator, a sink, a space for cooking, an induction hob, the washing machine and hidden
04:23oven beneath.
04:26We use the outer matte white laminate to add finishes for the kitchen cabinet and the entrance wall to create
04:33a clean and simple look.
04:37The sleeping area is separated from the common area by 2.7-meter-high door.
04:44As the space of this room is quite compact, we laid the sleeping area from the floor to create a
04:50wooden platform for the bed.
04:54Using the block board for the walls, ceilings and platform allow us to create a cozy cave-like space and
05:01to emphasize the sleeping area.
05:06There is also a hidden storage on the panel wall by the entrance which can be used to store suitcases.
05:16On the other side of the bedroom, we extend the storage to create more space for clothes.
05:25The bathroom entrance is inside of the bedroom.
05:28Since it disconnected from the natural light, it feels like the deepest part of the cave.
05:34So we decided to create a different mood and tone by using black tone and play with two sides of
05:40the tiles to create the depth of the small and tiny bathroom.
05:46The old toilet was replaced with a compact toilet.
05:50We also changed the vanity and shaving cabinet.
05:56For me, when designing a small space, the important point is to maximize usage within the minimized space.
06:03Color and tone can create a spacious look and allow the owner object to become a main focus.
06:10These small spaces consume less energy and less time to maintain so we can spend the time for the things
06:18we enjoy.
