Set inside a 1960s building in the bohemian Paris neighbourhood of Montmartre, this now bright and airy apartment features a light colour palette, curved features and smart built in furniture and cabinetry throughout. By removing all of the internal walls and enclosing one of the apartment’s two terraces, architect Bertille Bordja of ovo/ studios expanded the floorplan, creating space for a separate bedroom and a more contemporary and functional living space. The compact but fully equipped kitchen is finished in Okoume wood, chosen for its interesting grain and featured in other cabinetry throughout the apartment. A built-in L-shaped sofa bench with integrated storage wraps around the corner of the living room and doubles as an extra bed when needed. In summer, The glass sliding doors of the remaining terrace are opened creating an extension of the living space.

00:02The apartment is located in 18th district in Paris.
00:09It's located near Montmartre, which is a beau area in Paris.
00:15Sacré-Cœur is about 5 minutes away and you can actually see it from the apartment.
00:27My name is Berti Borgia, I'm an architect and founder of OVO Studio.
00:34I was influenced by the style of the 70s.
00:37I love the works of Danish architect Alvar Aalto and American mid-century architects.
00:45Their use of colors and natural materials such wood, beige and white create such a light and warm space.
01:01The building was built in the 60s.
01:05It is in the center of the district and is close to shops, cafes, bakeries and supermarkets.
01:17The apartment was last renovated, sometimes in the 90s.
01:22But the layout had not changed since the apartment was built in the 60s.
01:27The clients are a young and dynamic couple.
01:30They were looking to close off the terrace to create a bedroom and increase the area of the apartment.
01:38We removed all of the internal walls in the apartment.
01:42We were able to obtain permits to convert one of the terraces into a bedroom.
01:49The new kitchen was moved to the space of the old bathroom.
01:54The old kitchen was opened up to the living room.
01:57And the bathroom moved to part of the original living room.
02:03The other terrace was kept as an outdoor space.
02:14The story is made in a small source.
02:15The entrance of the apartment there is a small closet.
02:19The upper half of the closet is white and hides the electric box.
02:27The bottom half is made from curved okume, a wood from Africa.
02:33This wooden part extends to create a counter for kids when entering the apartment.
02:40The floor in the apartment is made from painted micro-cellents.
02:48The kitchen was moved to the center of the apartment.
02:51We kept the window that originally looked out to the old terrace to allow light to filter
02:58through.
02:59The placement of the window helps to bring in light from the north.
03:04As the window sits between the wall, we were able to create some shelves to place kitchen
03:10items and decorations.
03:12This also helps with privacy when there are objects placed on the shelves.
03:19The countertop and backsplash is made from polished concrete.
03:23We wanted the look of a single continuous material here.
03:28The floor to ceiling pantry has lots of space for food and other household items.
03:36There was an awkward spot in the corner of the kitchen.
03:38So we added shelves for commonly used items.
03:43It also hides the corner and electronics from view.
03:48The kitchen is made from the same okume wood as the rest of the apartment.
03:54The ceiling in the kitchen is dropped slightly because of the electrical wiring.
03:58So we created a fun curve for a smoother transition from the entrance.
04:04It also curves around the structural beam.
04:09On the other side of the kitchen is the dining area.
04:13Bright and hairy with a window that looks out onto the terrace.
04:18A circular dining table was chosen to allow for a better flow of movement and softens up
04:25the straight lines of the room.
04:32We designed a custom L-shaped bench sofa that's wrapped around the corner of the living room.
04:39The bench has a slight curve toward the floor.
04:42It makes the sofa more ergonomic and less heavy.
04:47There is a storage underneath.
04:51The sofa is quite spacious and a bit of luxury in a small apartment.
04:57It can be used as an extra bed.
05:01Above the sofa bench, we added floating shelves on both sides of the old fireplace.
05:09The living room is filled with natural light from the large glass doors that lead to the terrace.
05:16In the summer months, the door can be left open to integrate the terrace with the rest
05:22of the apartment.
05:24The terrace is quite spacious for an apartment of this size.
05:29Artificial grass was used for the floor and a bamboo wall was used around the sides
05:34to give the space a more organic feel and provides a bit of privacy.
05:44We separated the toilet from the bathroom in order to keep the bathroom and bedroom private.
05:51The wallpaper was chosen by the client and we took the dark navy from the shade in the wallpaper
05:58to use it on the walls.
06:05The new ensuite bathroom was designed to share the same space as the bedroom.
06:12Even behind some curtains, by the entrance of the bathroom, there is the laundry space.
06:20The client wanted a full size bathtub.
06:23Using the space behind the toilet, we custom made a bathtub and shower.
06:29Small light blue tiles were chosen for the floor, countertop and shelves.
06:36The vanity is from the same Okume wood as the rest of the apartment.
06:41We liked the interesting grain of the wood, so we made cuts from a large piece to match
06:47the grain and create a seamless look.
06:50With the bathroom and bedroom almost sharing the same space, the two rooms feel like a cozy
06:56cabin on a sleeper train.
06:59At the other end is the bed.
07:04We custom built a bed head with a small ledge to place items on at night.
07:11There is also storage under the bed.
07:20I think it's very important to deal with urban sprawl by encouraging residents not to buy
07:28in newly built homes, but to purchase existing ones.
07:33It allows us to keep the heritage designs of the apartments and the buildings.
