Tasked with creating a minimalist, elegantly designed home whilst retaining most of the existing finishes, Woon Chung Yen and the team at METRE Architects introduced a unique timber loft into the 4.7 meter high ceiling of this newly built condo. The ship-like loft evokes a sense of traditional Japanese carpentry, with sculptural rib-like joinery and space-saving alternating half-step staircase. The loft also serves as an architectural feature wall, discreet storage, and a dedicated office space. Additionally, METRE Architects replaced the dividing wall between the living room and bedroom with four sliding fluted glass panels, a simple yet impactful change that significantly opens up the space and offsets the lowered ceiling height.

00:02in a small space every surface every aspect matters the clients brief was
00:10very straightforward they wanted to add a loft to the 4.7 meter high living space
00:15and they were looking for a clean aesthetic so in this case we designed an
00:22entire loft deck which is also a feature wall staircase storage space working
00:28space all in one so a singular intervention has to fulfill all the
00:36functional and aesthetic requirements of the project
00:43as the design developed the loft structure became more like a suspended
00:48vessel both visually and also in terms of how it got constructed we want to
00:58instill a sense of craftsmanship that is reminiscent of traditional Japanese
01:03carpentry works we also knew from the start that an alternating half-step
01:10staircase shall be necessary to achieve a compact footprint
01:28this apartment building is in the Bartley area on the city fringe of Singapore
01:35the site is surrounded by leather houses and a handful of other five-story
01:41apartments in a low-rise residential enclave the Gazania condo is brand new
01:47completed in 2022
01:52the apartment was done in a modern style with gray and brown tones that were
01:58neutral enough to work with it came with finished floors furnished bathroom
02:04fully equipped kitchen there was a living and dining area and a bedroom with a
02:08built-in wardrobe
02:12the original dividing wall between the bedroom and the living room has been
02:17replaced with fluted glass sliding panels to connect both as one big space
02:24we added a loft deck in the living space with stairs that double as a storage cabinet
02:35upon entry to the apartment the visitor immediately sees the underside of the loft deck at the end of
02:41this corridor and anticipates this structure by the main door there is a full height cabinet that
02:48houses the distribution box and the clients use a space beneath for their shoe storage
02:58the kitchen counter is already furnished and fully equipped by the developer
03:04above the gray quartz countertop there is a full row of upper cabinets
03:07finished in beige laminate and a brown black painted glass panel fits between as the black splash
03:13which is easy to clean and slightly reflective
03:17you can see the underside of the loft deck which is slightly lower than the ceiling of the kitchen
03:23and hence gives spatial delineation while making the entry experience to this small apartment more layered
03:32at the end of the kitchen is the living room it sits under the new loft which has a series
03:38of
03:38ripped light joinery that envelopes the new ceiling above each section is lined with led strip lighting
03:46which enhances the ambience of the space with a warm glow
03:53this glowing timber-like ceiling became the centerpiece in the apartment and it behaves like a piece of spatial art
04:03seating in the living room is provided by two-floor recliners instead of a conventional sofa
04:10which makes it easier to navigate around the apartment
04:14and a small coffee table fits between the two-floor recliners which double as a dining surface for the couple
04:22a storage wall was added beneath the staircase
04:27the tv console is on wheels to allow access to the storage cabinets behind we used a push to open
04:35mechanism to avoid the use of door pulls and to achieve a flush look for the doors when they are
04:41closed
04:45when the sliding glass doors for both the patio and the bedroom are open a hybrid indoor outdoor
04:52space is created which is enough to entertain a group of six to eight persons from the patio we see
04:59large greenery which is quite unique in Singapore context a small table sits in the patio with foldable
05:07end panels to become a larger dining surface when friends come over
05:16when the doors are open it allows the living room and the bedroom to share the same space and appear
05:22larger
05:25the recliners can be pushed back further and the space can accommodate more people or perform tasks that require a
05:32larger space
05:35we kept the original wardrobe in the bedroom there is hanging space for clothes as well as storage for smaller
05:42items
05:44in the bedroom there are large windows that start from the top to about a meter from the floor
05:50when privacy is needed there are curtains that can be drawn which also provide shading
05:57an additional column was required to support the loft structure and this resulted in a little niche
06:03where the client used to house their vacuum robot
06:12the staircase was designed as a series of alternating half steps
06:17steps which saves space by being steeper than a conventional staircase
06:25the loft functions as an office for the couple
06:31there are desks along the back wall with a storage cabinet above
06:36the cabinet also conceals the aircon unit
06:46the bathroom is also fully furnished and hence no modifications were made here
06:52it is moderately sized with sufficient space to fit a laundry basket
06:58the spacious shower floating toilet and floating vanity help to make the bathroom appear a little bigger than it is
07:08in a small space in a small space every surface every aspect matters
07:14in singapore we often encounter owners with brand new condo apartments
07:20they want a design space while retaining almost all the existing finishes and appliances
07:25for sustainability and financial reasons
07:30this challenges our design in terms of how to maximize the design impact with often just a singular
07:38other intervention
