Inspired by the calm and peaceful atmosphere of traditional Japanese Ryokans, this central Bangkok apartment has been transformed into a flexible city escape by interior designer Mae Prachasilcha. The main living area seamlessly integrates a study corner, a convertible coffee table/dining table, and a custom-designed 3-seater modular sofa that can be cleverly separated with very strategically incorporated sliding Japanese shoji doors. Divided from the living area by these doors, a wooden box-like platform with four tatami mats serves as a second living room or a cosy tea room during the day and effortlessly transitions into a sleeping area at night. The area can be closed off by using the sliding panels, offering privacy and keeping the room cool at night. This multifunctional approach adds softness and functionality to the space while still allowing light to filter throughout the home.

00:03The design idea was to optimize the use of limited space by overlapping functional spaces.
00:13The design was inspired by the calm and peaceful vibe of Japanese Liu Kang or Hussein Yin.
00:21We wanted to use Japanese Choji dolls to give the space a softer look and also allow for flexibility.
00:28In doing so, we were able to create two multifunctional areas that expand the living area from 7 to 17
00:35square meters.
00:38My name is Mei. I am a freelance interior and graphic designer based in Bangkok, Thailand.
00:44The owner of this project is my brother. He lives here with his wife.
00:58The building is located near Latphal intersection. This area is considered to be the new CBD of Bangkok.
01:09We wanted to make a space to allow the owners and visitors to escape the city chaos.
01:15When we first found the apartment, it was a brand new unit with furnished kitchen and bathroom.
01:21There was also a set of three panel sliding doors which divided living area and bedroom.
01:30We removed the sliding doors between the living room and bedroom to completely open up the space and bring more
01:37natural light into the room.
01:39We added a platform in the bedroom and redesigned the bathroom.
01:50When opening the entrance door, on the left side is a folding cabinet with coffee corner and shoe pocket beneath.
01:59On the right side opposite the cabinet is the study corner.
02:03The folding shelves with LED lights are provided above the desk.
02:10The walls in the living area are coated with a synthetic resin that gives them a natural mortar texture.
02:18There is a big 3-seater modular sofa in the center of the room.
02:23It can be separated when closing the sliding panels.
02:28We selected Samsung The Frame TV that matches the wood in the rest of the apartment.
02:33It can be turned into a piece of art when the TV is turned off.
02:37I also designed a small but effective floating TV unit.
02:43The coffee table can be laced and transformed into a dining table.
02:49The kitchen is behind the TV wall.
02:51Due to the strict budget, we have not done anything with the original kitchen.
02:57It consists of sink, lentils, induction top, microwave niche and hanging open cabinets.
03:04The water purifier with a tap were installed when my brother has already moved in.
03:14At the end of the room, there is a wooden box-like platform with 4 tatami mats.
03:20This platform can be used as a second living area or even a study.
03:27We base this design on Japanese Liu Kang where the room can transform into different modes throughout the day.
03:34During the day, it is a relaxing tea room.
03:37At night, it can be turned into a sleeping area by taking out the futon mattress from the closet.
03:44The sleeping area can be closed off using the sliding panels to give more privacy and to keep the cool
03:50air in the room.
03:54The platform is high enough to make hidden storage under for my brother's board game and pillows.
04:01The washing machine and laundry area is on the balcony outside.
04:06My sister-in-law also plants roses in this area to bring a little bit of nature into the apartment.
04:16These sliding panels have another function as closet doors to cover up the mess inside when having visitors.
04:24When the room is closed from inside, the dressing area with a wall-in closet will appear.
04:30We put lights in the closet as this area lacks natural light.
04:37The bathroom walls and floor were paved with ceramic tiles in dark grey stone pattern.
04:44The folding vanity was made from the same materials that we used to make all wood furniture in the room.
04:50The LED lights were installed at the top and the bottom of this cabinet to create an atmosphere of relaxation
04:57and restfulness.
05:01I think living in a small space makes life simpler and supports sustainable lifestyle.
05:07You will buy and keep only what you really need.
05:10It also helps to reduce carbon footprint as well as saving on electricity bills.
05:29You can find the way in the near future.
