00:01Did you hear that?
00:07Whoa!
00:09That curtain just moved.
00:12On this episode of Expedition X...
00:15Wow, that thing is massive!
00:17My team boards the USS Hornet,
00:20one of America's most decorated warships
00:22that's also said to be one of its most haunted.
00:26Oh! What was that?
00:31Eyewitnesses claim a paranormal battle is taking place.
00:35Here's all this spiritual traffic
00:37that make this ship more of a beacon.
00:39Things that don't belong here.
00:42Are the spirits of its fallen sailors
00:44still protecting this ship even in death?
00:48She's in need of medical attention on her right arm.
00:52Right arm!
00:56Phil and Heather will go to war...
00:58Oh, boy.
00:59...with the horrors of the Hornet.
01:01Whoa!
01:04What the...
01:14All right, guys. How do we feel about boats?
01:17I feel great about boats, as long as they float.
01:20Am I gonna need Dramamine? What are we talking about here?
01:22No Dramamine, but we need to pack all our paranormal gear.
01:25I have a lead on an amazing paranormal hotspot
01:27that has slithering shadow figures, disembodied voices,
01:31people even report being choked there,
01:32and a whole heck of a lot more.
01:34So, ghosts on a boat?
01:36Well, a ship. And that ship is the USS Hornet.
01:39It's a decommissioned aircraft carrier
01:41that's moored in San Francisco Bay.
01:42And it saw a ton of action during World War II.
01:45And the people that maintain it today
01:47say that it's still fully crewed with spirits.
01:51Ooh.
01:52First of all, excellent naval knowledge, Heather.
01:54And the USS Hornet is a ship indeed.
01:56It has one of the most famous lineages of the whole U.S. fleet.
02:00And considering all of the action that it saw
02:02and all of the blood spilled,
02:04I can certainly see how the USS Hornet
02:07may have gone from glory to ghost story.
02:14March 15, 1944.
02:17At the height of World War II,
02:19the newly commissioned aircraft carrier USS Hornet CV-12
02:23set sail from Pearl Harbor
02:25to join the conflict now raging in the Pacific Ocean.
02:29Nearly 900 feet long,
02:31this cutting-edge Essex-class carrier
02:33has 18 decks,
02:35a thousand rooms,
02:37seven galleys,
02:38a hospital,
02:39a barbershop,
02:40even a jail.
02:41It isn't just a warship.
02:43It's a floating city of steel,
02:45home to 4,000 crewmen,
02:48along with a hundred fighter planes and dive bombers.
02:54During the following 16 months
02:56of continuous, furious combat,
02:58the Hornet plays a pivotal role
03:00in the battles of Leyte Gulf,
03:03Iwo Jima,
03:04and Okinawa.
03:06Its air group shreds Japanese fighter planes,
03:10knocking 668 enemy aircraft out of the sky,
03:15and blowing up another 742 on the ground.
03:20Meanwhile,
03:22her Avenger torpedo bombers send 73 ships to watery graves.
03:31The Hornet dodges torpedoes and endures constant strafing runs,
03:35plus kamikaze attacks.
03:39Many of her brave crew will die,
03:42pilots launching fearlessly into battle, never to return.
03:47While on deck, crewmen succumb to shrapnel and bullet wounds.
03:55All told, more than 300 crew die on the ship,
03:59with another 50 airmen killed in action.
04:03After bringing home hundreds of wounded soldiers at the conflict's end,
04:08the warship is eventually decommissioned in 1970.
04:12In the late 1990s, the Hornet is saved from the scrapyard,
04:17and transformed into a floating museum,
04:19moored in Alameda, California.
04:22Almost immediately, restoration workers and guides begin to report
04:27terrifying paranormal encounters.
04:30Ghostly sailors are regularly seen on the hangar deck,
04:33and charging through the ship's claustrophobic corridors.
04:37The activity only seems to be increasing,
04:40with many guides convinced there are more than just the spirits
04:43of former sailors on board.
04:46There are repeated sightings of a terrifying crawling figure
04:50near the admiral's quarters.
04:52And claims of an entity that chokes visitors
04:54in an area known as the Phocosil.
04:57Has the Hornet's crew really returned to duty for one last war?
05:01And are the living the enemy?
05:10Okay, so, what do you think?
05:11So, my grandfather served in the Pacific on the USS Montrose.
05:15His stories really stayed with me.
05:17It's not a stretch at all to think that the energies of those
05:20that served and died on the Hornet are still imprinted on it somehow today.
05:24And you know, it's the imprint that I'm interested in too,
05:27but in a different sense of the word.
05:28Because, think about it, this is a vast metal construction
05:31that has been imprinted or degraded by age and war.
05:35So, it seems like people who visit there could easily be overwhelmed
05:39by this unusual claustrophobic space and its history.
05:44So, maybe it's not ghosts they're experiencing, but the atmosphere.
05:47Okay, so, a not-so-ship-shaped ship, Phil.
05:51Yeah.
05:52All right, so, look, whether it's the environment
05:54or what happened in that environment, that's what you have to find out.
05:58So, calibrate your latitude and longitude
06:00and plot a course for the USS Hornet
06:02to discover if she has truly been boarded by spirits.
06:07Aye, Captain.
06:09Dismissed.
06:12After a six-hour flight from New York to San Francisco,
06:15Phil and Heather take to the water,
06:17charting a course for the USS Hornet.
06:25Is that it?
06:26That's it!
06:28Wow, that thing is massive!
06:35We've arranged to meet with the ship's docents,
06:38Tracy Newby, Faye Navarro, Heidi Chavez, and Chris Chavez.
06:43Between the four of them,
06:44they've spent over 50 years working on the USS Hornet.
06:48Lovely to meet y'all.
06:49Well, this is incredible.
06:51So, this is the hangar.
06:52Yes.
06:52We did our best researching this ship before we got here.
06:55It has a long decorated history,
06:57so I just want to get right to it.
07:00Do you think the USS Hornet is haunted?
07:03Yes.
07:04Why?
07:04Some of us have been touched in ways we can't explain.
07:07I was working in security at the time,
07:09and we had reports of some teenagers
07:12messing around in the folks' hole
07:14where the anchor chains are,
07:15and I would go up and check it out.
07:17And as I was climbing up the ladder,
07:19I felt a constriction around my throat.
07:22When you say constriction,
07:23do you mean it just felt kind of tight in your throat?
07:25No, I felt like someone or something was choking me.
07:28Like there was a rope around my neck.
07:30Oof!
07:31I experienced something kind of creepy.
07:32We were up in the Admiral's Quarters,
07:34and I was looking down the passageway,
07:36and I kept seeing was someone peering out
07:38out of this one opening.
07:39And then I saw like a hand, another hand,
07:42a head peer out, and I'm just staring at this thing.
07:45It just looked like a person in the dark,
07:47just a shadow crawling across the floor,
07:49and then vanished.
07:50That's creepy.
07:52Wow.
07:53We have so many people
07:54that experience the crawling spirit,
07:56so that's what we call it, the crawler.
08:00So the USS Warner is a huge ship.
08:02Where else should we look into?
08:05Sick Bay.
08:05I've seen actual poltergeist activity down there.
08:07The pharmacy closet door was opening and shutting.
08:14Violently by itself,
08:16and I just stood there in shock.
08:18That was crazy.
08:20So also in sick bay,
08:23sometimes people will lay on the operating table,
08:25and I had someone actually do it and ask for help.
08:28Like, hey, I need help.
08:30Grab my leg.
08:31And you can actually see an imprint of a hand on the sweats.
08:34Do you think that's a ghost medic
08:36going to help that person?
08:37I say so, yeah.
08:38Wow.
08:39Anybody else had encounters that they can't explain it?
08:42I've seen full-bired apparitions
08:44of like men in uniforms walk into walls.
08:47Many years ago when I first started working here,
08:49I took a picture of the Admiral's Bridge.
08:51I've actually caught a ghost in a photograph.
08:54Do you have the photo?
08:55It's right here.
08:57Wow.
08:59You're telling me there was no one there.
09:01Not when I took that, no.
09:02It looks a lot like Admiral Joseph Jocko Clark,
09:05who was here in 1944.
09:07Admiral Jocko Clark?
09:08Yes, that is who I think it is.
09:10And he was actually really beloved among the crew.
09:12When he got here, one of our captains was Captain Browing.
09:16Two guys fell overboard,
09:17and he didn't turn around the ship to get them.
09:19And Clark was actually the one that reprimanded him
09:22and got him removed.
09:23That's why the men really followed him well.
09:25Admiral Jocko Clark is one of the legendary spirits
09:28of this ship.
09:28And we believe he's still here with us.
09:30I think he's still in command.
09:32It's a remarkable photo.
09:33Well, thank you all so much.
09:35We got a lot to do.
09:36First stop, flight deck.
09:37Heck yeah.
09:38Thanks.
09:39Bye.
09:39Good luck.
09:41Heather wants to check out reports
09:43of the sinister entity known as the Crawler
09:45near the Admiral's quarters on the O2 deck.
09:48I'm planning to head to the foc'sle on the O1 deck
09:51to investigate Tracy's claim of being choked.
09:54But first, we both ascend to the flight deck
09:57to try and replicate the ghostly photo Heidi took
09:59the back of the bridge.
10:01Wow.
10:02Wow.
10:03Look at this place.
10:05Oh, my gosh.
10:07Incredible.
10:09I mean, can you imagine the action?
10:11Enemy flying overhead, plane zipping off the runway here.
10:15See that up there?
10:16That looks familiar?
10:17Oh, yeah.
10:18That's where the picture was taken.
10:19Exactly.
10:20Can you set up a camera to match the angle of her image?
10:22I want to head up there and see if I can recreate that figure.
10:25You're on the Hornet.
10:26Okay.
10:26Copy that.
10:33All right, Phil.
10:34I am set.
10:35I've got the camera looking at those windows.
10:37Copy.
10:38Can you see me up here right now?
10:39Yeah, for sure.
10:40Okay.
10:40Does it look like I'm in a similar position?
10:43Well, you look shorter.
10:44I mean, the top of the head is almost at the top of the window frame.
10:47I'm standing up on this.
10:49Does that look better?
10:50That looks better.
10:51The right arm is extended past the window pane to your right.
10:55Like so?
10:56Yeah, that's much better.
10:59Keep it running.
11:00Taking photos every 10, 15 seconds.
11:02And I'm going to play with the light, see what I can come up with.
11:05Copy that.
11:06I'm going to leave the camera running, and I'm going to start investigating.
11:09So, it's hard to tell right now, but out there is the sunset.
11:13Now, this ship has a lot of reflective surfaces.
11:16So, what I'm wondering is maybe what she saw isn't a ghost, but a glare.
11:21So, let's start shining this thing, see what we can come up with.
11:25That camera should be taking photos about every five seconds.
11:28So, I'm just going to hold this here.
11:30Five.
11:33You can see right here, this light is bouncing off this.
11:39I think I've bounced the light around here enough.
11:45I'm going to keep that camera running, see what else shows up here tonight.
11:59Oh, wow.
12:00Look at this.
12:04I've got MaxLS.
12:05It'll detect any unusual entities.
12:11I'm also going to do an EVP session.
12:16My name is Heather.
12:20And I just want to understand what's going on.
12:24If you get close to this EMF meter, if you make it go off, I'll consider that a yes.
12:29Is there anyone here with me?
12:30Yep.
12:31Yep.
12:31Yep.
12:32Yep.
12:32Okay.
12:33All right.
12:36Admiral Jocko.
12:37Is that who's sitting at the head of this table?
12:43Right now, it feels as though you are right here with us.
12:48Yes.
12:49Yes.
12:50Yes.
12:50Yes.
12:51Yes.
12:51Big yes.
12:52Okay.
12:53I don't have you on the XLS.
12:54If you could show up on the XLS, that would be awesome.
12:58Oh, oh, oh.
13:00Oh, boy.
13:01Okay.
13:11There you are.
13:12There you are.
13:12I see you.
13:13Okay.
13:14You are tall.
13:18Oh, gone.
13:20Okay.
13:21All right.
13:25Okay.
13:26Is there something evil attracted to the USS Hornet?
13:31Yes.
13:33Is the crawler one of the evil spirits?
13:38Yes!
13:40Right here was where Faye was sitting when she saw the crawler through this doorway.
13:51Is the crawler here with me right now?
13:56Yes!
13:57Big yes!
13:58Big yes!
14:00Where is the crawler?
14:04Whoa.
14:05What is that?
14:07Is that the crawler?
14:10Yes.
14:14Gone.
14:16Never seen that before.
14:32Oh, my gosh.
14:34This is it.
14:35Look at that anchor chain.
14:39This is Vauxhall.
14:43Absolutely amazing.
14:45This must be the ladder.
14:47So, it was about halfway up this ladder.
14:51And Tracy said he started feeling like he was being choked.
14:55And off I go.
14:57Test out this feeling on the way up.
15:05Didn't feel like I was being choked.
15:11Oh.
15:13Did you hear that?
15:15Yeah.
15:15That was a scream.
15:20Oh.
15:22Heather, you good? You good?
15:25Come on.
15:26Heather, do you copy? Are you okay?
15:31I'm not getting around walking.
15:32I think you just can't reach through the ship.
15:34All right.
15:36Let's see if we can figure out what there was.
15:38Make sure she's all right.
15:58I search the passageways all around the foc'sle for the source of the scream but find nothing.
16:04Eventually, I end up back in Heather's walkie range.
16:07Heather, do you copy?
16:09Yeah, copy. What's up?
16:10Finally. Are you guys okay?
16:12We've gotten a lot of activity up here.
16:14But yeah, we're all okay.
16:15I heard someone yell like they just got injured.
16:19That's wild.
16:20We need to regroup. Let's meet in the six bay.
16:23Okay. I'll see you there.
16:31You're telling me you didn't hear that. Everyone's good.
16:33No. Everyone is good.
16:34You said you heard someone screaming in pain?
16:37Yeah, that's what it sounded like.
16:38And when the USS Hornet was in action?
16:40There would probably be a lot of injured screaming for help in sick bay.
16:44Right.
16:50Wow.
16:53X-rays.
16:56Oh, wow. Look at this. Remember that story about the pharmacy?
17:00Is that it?
17:00This is it?
17:01The pharmacy closet door was opening and shutting violently by itself.
17:08Back here? This must be the closet door. She said open and closed.
17:12Oh, yeah. Let's see if we can get some activity.
17:14Okay.
17:18Okay.
17:19We heard that that door can open and shut.
17:22Can you close that door?
17:25Were you trying to get some medicine in there?
17:29Yes. Okay.
17:32Look at that. Door's moving.
17:35Door's moving.
17:36Oh, it is.
17:37Door's moving.
17:38Door is moving.
17:42Were you trying to shut us out?
17:45That was crazy.
17:46Okay.
17:47Okay.
17:52Are you hiding behind the door?
17:57There's nothing there that should be making it go off.
18:03I'm hearing a lot of movement out there.
18:05Yeah.
18:11Oh.
18:12I thought I just saw something on the ground over here.
18:15I swear out of the corner of my eye, it looked like there was someone right there.
18:19Crawling.
18:21I don't know.
18:22It might have been a reflection of the light.
18:24And just my eye playing a trick on me, but it looked like there was someone down there.
18:28What?
18:31I just saw a shadow just dart the hallway over here.
18:36It went in here.
18:39Heather.
18:41This is the surgical suite.
18:43Oh, my God.
18:44I'm telling you, whatever I just saw darted into this room.
18:48Wow.
18:49This is an original operating room.
18:51Remember what Faye said.
18:53She's brought guests in here that have laid on this gurney and felt a medic's hands on them.
18:57She even saw the imprint of a hand.
18:59Well, supposedly.
19:00Sure.
19:01I want to test it out, but I want to borrow from the Estes method.
19:04Okay.
19:05Here's what I'm thinking.
19:06You communicate with the medic, and I'm the patient.
19:08I'll lay down on this gurney with noise-canceling headphones, blindfold on, and let's see if I feel anything.
19:15Okay, so you want me to tell the medic what's wrong with you?
19:18It's going to be a long list.
19:19Okay, rude.
19:20Okay.
19:21Let's give it a shot.
19:25All right, here are the headphones.
19:28Once you put them on, I'll tap you once.
19:30That says we've started.
19:33Once we're done, I'll tap you twice on the shoulder.
19:35Okay.
19:36All right, can you hear me?
19:38Heather, there's a spider on your shoulder.
19:42Heather's spider.
19:44All right, that didn't get her.
19:46I think it's working.
19:53If there is a medic in here, this is Heather.
19:56She has a fractured foot.
19:57Can you assist?
20:04Nothing.
20:04Okay.
20:07If there is a medic in here, she's in need of medical attention on her right arm.
20:17Right arm.
20:29What?
20:31Bro.
20:32What?
20:32It felt like two fingertips going down my arm.
20:35No.
20:35Like a feather.
20:36Are you messing with me?
20:37No.
20:38I said a fracture on her right arm.
20:40Did it feel aggressive?
20:42No, it was a gentle touch.
20:44What do you do with that information?
20:45What's our next step?
20:46I think the next step is spending the night on the ship
20:49and putting ourselves in that vulnerable position.
20:51I saw some bunks down the hall within the sick bay.
20:54So I'll take down here.
20:56You take the stateroom.
20:57We'll see how long we last.
20:59Okay.
21:01With Phil hunkering down in one of the sick bay bunks,
21:04I head up to a stateroom on the O2 level,
21:06where shadow figures have been reported.
21:08We both set up rim pods,
21:09handy cams,
21:11and recorders to catch any unusual activity.
21:18All right.
21:24Time to get some sleep.
21:39Oh!
21:41What was that?
21:46Rumpod's going awfully crazy.
21:48Heather.
21:49Wake up.
21:50Wake up.
21:51Phil?
21:52What's going on?
21:52There's something about this sick bay, Heather.
21:54You need to get over here.
21:55Copy that.
21:56I'm on my way.
22:02Hey.
22:02Hi.
22:03What happened?
22:04I don't.
22:05No.
22:05I was sleeping.
22:06Really?
22:08Whoa.
22:08Whoa.
22:11Is that from our movement?
22:15No.
22:16It's not.
22:19Did you hear that?
22:23What'd you hear?
22:24It was like a knock.
22:26I don't know what happened.
22:28Behind me.
22:29It was behind you.
22:30Oh, there.
22:32Back here?
22:34Yeah.
22:45Whoa!
22:47No!
22:50That curtain just moved.
22:54Heather, there's no one there.
22:56I saw it.
22:59I wish I had 10 years go off of my life.
23:05I have goosebumps right now.
23:07That was crazy.
23:09Phil.
23:11It was right here.
23:12You saw it, right?
23:13Yeah.
23:14It was like the curtain just did that.
23:16Yes, like someone was getting out of bed.
23:20How did that happen, Heather?
23:22I'll give you one reason.
23:24That was really, really spooky.
23:28Okay.
23:32I don't see anything.
23:36Nothing.
23:37All right.
23:39Nothing back here.
23:40I have no explanation for how that happened.
23:50After a night I'm not eager to repeat, I want to learn more about the history of the Hornet.
23:56Bruce Douglas knows this ship better than anyone because he served on board in the 1960s.
24:05This room is incredible.
24:08Where are we right now?
24:09This is Combat Information Center, CIC for short.
24:12It's like the nerve center of the ship.
24:14Here they keep track of everything that's going on around the ship.
24:17Underwater, on the surface, and in the air.
24:19Unbelievable.
24:20And you actually served on this ship during the Vietnam War?
24:23Yes, I was on board from late 1968 through decommissioning in 1970.
24:27Well, thank you for your service.
24:29And I got to know, the USS Hornet has gained a reputation as being a very haunted ship.
24:35Yes.
24:36Do you think what most people hear and assume are ghosts is really just an old ship creaking
24:42and moaning a little bit?
24:43That would be plausible.
24:45But as far as actual voices and footsteps, I can't explain those.
24:51Are there any stories that stand out to you that you say, well, that one I can't explain?
24:56One story in particular, one of the ladies that works on the ship that I know,
25:00she was down in after auxiliary.
25:03It's very near the bottom of the ship.
25:04It's below the waterline.
25:05An area that's not open to the public.
25:10And she heard a growling noise down there.
25:15A growling noise?
25:16That's how she described it, yes.
25:17Really affected her, really made an impression on her.
25:20So it scared her?
25:21It did stick with her, yes.
25:22But there's nothing in there that functions anymore that would even move at all
25:25that might cause a growling noise.
25:27If I wanted to look into this growling noise in the aft auxiliary,
25:31how would I get down there?
25:32It's probably pretty close to the bottom of the ship.
25:34You'd have to go down an elevator shaft.
25:36The elevator no longer works.
25:37You'd have to have a rope and rappel down.
25:40Okay.
25:40But don't look down.
25:42Noted.
25:46I've arranged to meet with docent Stacy Mine.
25:49Well, I can't wait to chat.
25:51She leads night tours of the ship and believes she's encountered terrifying paranormal activity.
25:56Tell me about the most intense experience you've ever had on the ship.
25:59So this was the O2 ready room.
26:02The pilots would get their briefings and one of the guests called out,
26:07I see a shadow figure in the passageway.
26:12So I went out into the passageway.
26:14I looked towards the back of the ship and in my face was a shadow figure approaching.
26:20Got out of the way just in time.
26:22Whoosh.
26:23And then disappeared.
26:24Down the hall.
26:25Male, slender, moving with a purpose.
26:28Were you scared?
26:29I was startled.
26:30That was a first for me.
26:31That's incredible.
26:33As we continue to investigate, where would you recommend we go?
26:37The O2 ready room.
26:38And Radio Central.
26:39Okay.
26:40So what was Radio Central used for?
26:42So that was the communication nexus for the ship.
26:45And if you're fighting a war, that had to be the most protective place on the entire ship.
26:50Absolutely.
26:50Why is this ship so active?
26:53There is a constellation of things that make this ship.
26:58We say it's a portal.
26:59I think it's more of a beacon.
27:01We're in salt water.
27:02We're in a fault line.
27:04And there's the antennas up above.
27:07The antennas still work?
27:08Some of them still do.
27:10Okay.
27:10They're still connected.
27:11So here's all this spiritual traffic coming in.
27:15You know, good, bad and different.
27:17Things that don't belong here find the beacon and come in.
27:21But the sailors, they will always protect.
27:23They will always guard the ship.
27:25So the spirits of sailors on this ship kick off any entities that don't belong.
27:29They're fighting a war.
27:31Ultimately, yes.
27:32They're guardians.
27:33And the job is never done protecting the ship.
27:39The idea that the spirits of the sailors are protecting this ship from something far darker really resonates with me.
27:45With that in mind, Phil and I split up to try and prove what's happening on the Hornet.
27:50I head up to the ready room on the AO2 deck, where Stacy had her disturbing shadow figure encounter.
27:56Meanwhile, Phil gets ready to rappel down the elevator shaft leading to the aft auxiliary deck, investigating the strange growls
28:03heard deep within the ship.
28:05Bombs away.
28:10We'll aim to meet back up at the radio room at midnight, where I want to harness the power of
28:14the ship's antenna as a paranormal beacon.
28:17Okay. Just another day on the job, huh?
28:22So it's about 70 feet down.
28:26There's a heck of a drop down there.
28:30Ah!
28:39Ah!
28:43Whew!
28:46Okay.
28:47That was a little scary.
28:53I'm about to enter an area of the ship that has been closed off for a quarter while, so I
28:58have no idea what I'm up against.
29:02But it is now time to enter the belly of the beast.
29:12There we go.
29:16Ugh!
29:19Ugh!
29:30So this is aft auxiliary.
29:34This is where, according to Bruce, someone down in here heard what sounded like a growl.
29:44Wanna get out the flare?
29:49So, most of this room looks pretty cool.
29:53What is that?
29:54Getting some heat signature off these pipes here.
30:01Yeah, starting to feel a little bit out of breath.
30:04Gotta check the air quality.
30:08Oxygen levels are good.
30:11Carbon monoxide levels could be better.
30:13The way it can affect you at those low doses is making you dizzy, confused, possibly see things and maybe
30:21even hear things.
30:22Numbers are going up.
30:23I don't want to spend too much time down here.
30:25So, yeah.
30:27Gonna make this quick.
30:40Stacy was in the ready room when one of her guests saw a shadow figure cross by.
30:46This is where the pilots would have gotten their mission briefings before taking them off into action.
30:51A lot of those pilots never returned from those missions.
30:57But they would have had to wait sometimes for hours in this spot.
31:01So, I brought some trigger objects to see if I can spark any activity.
31:05We've got 1940s playing cards issued by the US Navy.
31:091940s dominoes because they needed activities to pass their time.
31:15This is a motion activated record player.
31:18Anything gets anywhere near to it, it's gonna start playing a record.
31:27One more tool.
31:29Got all of these tools for you to interact with.
31:32So, I know you're here.
31:34Is there anyone here with me?
31:39Can you tell me your name?
31:44What is down here?
31:47Just listen.
31:55Something's making noise, I hear.
31:56It sounds like water being pumped.
32:01Up here.
32:09The sound is coming from in here.
32:16So, when I'm outside of this thing, my voice sounds fairly normal.
32:19The second I talk inside of it.
32:22Listen to that.
32:24Hello.
32:26Whoa.
32:28It's picking up a lot of the lower tones.
32:30And making those vibrate more than the higher tones.
32:33So, let's say some water flushes through this.
32:37Maybe the lower tones of that water flushing through are getting amplified and resonating through this.
32:45It's shooting out into aft auxiliary, and the effects of carbon monoxide adds a whole new element in sounding like
32:52a growl.
32:57Stacy said that the most intense experience she ever had was that shadow figure barreling down the hallway.
33:05Was that you?
33:05Were you that shadow figure?
33:08Prime.
33:09In your prime while you were on?
33:10Wah!
33:14Okay, so you were in your prime when you were on this ship.
33:17How many spirits are here with me?
33:21Bunch.
33:22There's a bunch of you here.
33:23Are you on this ship still protecting it from entities that don't belong?
33:29Are you keeping her safe?
33:32Ooh, yes.
33:33Yes, okay.
33:36Yeah, so you're still saving her from enemies.
33:38I think there's a ton of sailors on this ship that are still protecting her.
33:42I think this ship is a beacon.
33:43It's like a supercharged battery for spirits to constantly use.
33:51Yep.
33:52I think I'm finally understanding the activity on this ship.
34:02Just before midnight, I climb back up to the flight deck and head to Radio Central to regroup with Heather
34:08like planned.
34:10Phil!
34:14Wow, look at this equipment.
34:17This is crazy.
34:22Oh, my gosh.
34:30Oh, this must have been cryptography in here.
34:34Top secret, look at that.
34:36Wow.
34:39These walls could talk.
34:42Oh!
34:45What the?
34:50Over its years of service, the USS Hornet welcomed many legendary guests, from presidents to astronauts.
34:57But arguably, the most remarkable visitor was a gaunt, wild-eyed man named George Tweed, also known as the Ghost
35:05of Guam.
35:07When Japan invaded the U.S. territory of Guam in 1941, Navy sailor Tweed fled into the jungle.
35:14He then spent a harrowing 31 months evading the Japanese, who were desperate to capture him.
35:20After three years of remaining invisible to the enemy, he was finally rescued by U.S. troops and brought aboard
35:26the USS Hornet.
35:27Dumbstruck sailors described him as deftly thin, pale as a ghost, carrying only a bloodstained machete and a bundle of
35:35handwritten notes detailing enemy positions.
35:38American forces used that very intel to retake Guam, and Tweed was awarded the Legion of Merit.
35:44Not bad for a so-called ghost.
35:55How is this on?
35:57Did you press something?
35:58I didn't press anything!
35:59Maybe they have this thing on a timer for visitors, and it just goes off every once in a while?
36:03Pretty good timing.
36:06Turkey trots to water, 4RR the world wonders.
36:10That's gotta be code.
36:12Let me get a photo of it.
36:15I want to try and connect my spirit box to the ship's still-functioning antenna.
36:21Okay.
36:22Here we go!
36:23What?
36:24Antenna input.
36:25Antenna input.
36:26Okay, I'll grab the spirit box.
36:28Okay.
36:29Connecting my device directly to the system should supercharge its range, turning the whole ship into a paranormal communication device.
36:37If this works, this will be the most powerful call and response session we've ever attempted.
36:42You ready?
36:43Mm-hmm.
36:44Recording is going.
36:45This is Phil and Heather.
36:46We are Radio Central.
36:47We are plugged into the antenna.
36:49Give it a rip.
37:00You sailors are heroes.
37:03Is there anyone with us?
37:10Trapped?
37:11Why are you trapped?
37:12Are you still protecting this ship?
37:15Yes.
37:16Where are you protecting it from?
37:18What is here?
37:20Good and bad.
37:23Is the choker here?
37:26Death.
37:27That's a scary noise.
37:29Death.
37:30Kill.
37:31Kill?
37:32Are you the crawler?
37:35Be gone.
37:36Be gone.
37:40Did you just say sailor?
37:43Yes.
37:44Okay.
37:45If you were sailor on this ship, what was your job?
37:47What was your rank?
37:51General.
37:53General?
37:54Admiral Jocko, are you here?
37:59There's so much activity and so many different types of activity.
38:02And it does seem like they are still protecting the ship.
38:07Possibly the strength of that duty running through the blood of these sailors.
38:10This is a bond that these sailors created together that would last well past a lifetime.
38:16If there's anything you want to say, now's the time.
38:20Peace?
38:21You want peace?
38:25What haunts the USS Hornet?
38:28Heather and Phil asked questions using their super-powered spirit box for another hour.
38:33And continued to get deeply disturbing answers.
38:36But none were more unsettling than this.
38:38What are you protecting it from?
38:40What is here?
38:42Good and bad.
38:44Good and bad.
38:45This was the frightening theme for the evidence the team collected during their time on this
38:5080-year-old aircraft carrier.
38:53First, to the good, was there any evidence of positive paranormal forces on the Hornet?
38:59We reviewed the series of photos Phil took on the bridge.
39:02None of his reflected light experiments came close to replicating the clearly defined shape our witness captured.
39:11Does this mean her photo really was a manifestation of the ship's Admiral, Joseph Jocko Clark?
39:18It may be that he's still protecting the ship he loved so dearly.
39:25But there was also evidence of the bad.
39:28Whoa.
39:29What is that?
39:30Heather believes the sinister black line in the corridor outside the conference room is proof of an aggressive paranormal presence.
39:38Given that this is right where the hostile crawler spirit is often reported,
39:42she's only more certain that something menacing was close.
39:48Which makes what she captured on the audio recorded in the room itself all the more shocking.
39:53She noticed the appearance of the lines coincided with this noise.
39:58Is that the crawler?
40:03It's very faint, but she believes you can distinctly hear the repetitive sound of a General Quarters alarm.
40:17Could this be the residual energy of sailors scrambling to their battle stations?
40:22Or is this a warning because the crawler was about to attack?
40:26The identity of this disturbing crawling entity remains a mystery.
40:32Is the USS Hornet at war between the good and the bad?
40:37Are the spirits of the brave sailors really battling a strange, evil, paranormal force?
40:45Heather thinks the evidence points to a simple answer.
40:48Yes.
40:49If the USS Hornet truly is fighting on in the afterlife,
40:53Heather had a final idea to bring what this warship and its former sailors would want most of all.
41:00Peace.
41:01Okay, so they used to play this every single night before it lights out.
41:04Let's see if we can help these sailors get rest.
41:06Okay.
41:08Ready?
41:09Mm-hmm.
41:10Okay.
41:27Wait...
41:35She bloomers.
