00:04On Ask This Old House, our experts travel across the country to answer questions about your house.
00:18Today, Tommy teaches Zach how to turn a flower vase on the lathe.
00:23This is so much fun.
00:24Then, Mark answers viewers' questions on masonry cracks, offering advice on how they happened and possible repairs.
00:34And Ross helps a homeowner upgrade the garage door opener.
00:39Voila, that's unbelievable.
00:42All that on Ask This Old House.
00:51Hey, Tommy.
00:52Hey, Zach, you made it.
00:53I did.
00:54Thanks for having me up here.
00:56Oh, it's my pleasure.
00:57So what have you been working on?
00:58We've been doing this new TV show for first-time homebuyers.
01:01Yeah.
01:01It's going pretty well trying to keep them on the straight and narrow so they don't buy a bad house.
01:05Getting it, well, that could be a definite problem and a very expensive problem to fix.
01:10Exactly.
01:11Unfortunately, a lot of homeowners are waiving the inspections and everything else because they think they have to have that
01:16house in the worst way.
01:17There's always another one down the corner.
01:20Yeah.
01:20That's 100% right.
01:21Trying to instill that wisdom.
01:23Yeah.
01:23But I was thinking about that last house we did in Ridgewood with you where you turned that doorknob.
01:28Oh, the little doorknob with the escutcheon, covered the escutcheon there.
01:31Exactly.
01:32That was the perfect gift for those homeowners.
01:35And I thought maybe you could show me how to turn something because I've been doing this 25 years.
01:38I never touched a lathe.
01:40Really?
01:40I'd love to see what it's about.
01:43Put your hand on it right there.
01:44It doesn't hurt.
01:45All right, yeah.
01:45Oh, I see that.
01:46There we go.
01:47Pulled the bandaid off.
01:47Oh, you're ready now.
01:49The nice thing about a lathe, yeah, if you want to give somebody a gift, you know, you can take
01:53junk wood.
01:53And, I mean, I'm a Yankee, so I'm cheap, so I will save, you know, scrap pieces of wood and
02:00make something out of it.
02:01So these are a little gift.
02:02I like that a lot.
02:03A little bud vase.
02:04And this is another one right here, a little bit bigger, but I celebrated the bark on this one.
02:09Didn't cut it all off.
02:11Yeah, I love the way the bark looks.
02:12It's surprising.
02:13Yeah.
02:13I really like that one a lot.
02:14Flowers, you've got to make sure you keep watering them.
02:16I know.
02:17Yeah, plastic.
02:18That's a good thing about them.
02:19And, you know, you can turn a piece of wood like this, turn it into something.
02:25Just like that?
02:26I might cut it with a bandsaw to make it a little bit smaller to make it easier.
02:31But there's all kinds of different things out there that you can make and turn and giving a little gift
02:35to homeowners at the end of the project is always nice.
02:39So how do I start?
02:40Why don't you, first of all, put your apron on and then we can get started on the basics and
02:45how to do it.
02:46All right, let me grab an apron.
02:50All right, so I took a piece of the scrap firewood and basically we have a rectangle, not a square.
02:56Right.
02:56Okay, so to do this, first we want to find a way to mount it into the chuck.
03:01So I've found the rough center.
03:03As I said, I'm going to use a spur drive right here that will go into this chuck, bring it
03:10down and tighten it.
03:14All right, so I put it on the center mark there, put it on the center mark here, bring it
03:20in.
03:21And now I'm going to tighten it up and force it in to the teeth.
03:25So now I spin it to see my distance.
03:30So now we're going to be spinning a lot of air.
03:34So wood, air, wood, air.
03:39We're going to cut it off.
03:41Right.
03:41All right, so turn it on and let it spin.
03:46Got plenty of clearance.
03:49All right, so we've got to speed it up.
03:51Let's try about 600, 700.
04:05Sounds like a helicopter landing.
04:07Yeah, yeah.
04:09All right, so now see what difference it makes when you bring it up about 200.
04:18There you go, perfect.
04:30Okay, so now that felt a little different, right?
04:33It did, much better.
04:35Okay, so now the tool is on the tool rest.
04:37That's open.
04:39That's closing the tool and closing the tool.
04:42So open is where you're at.
04:45But now to keep it from blasting you, you can close it a little bit and angle it this way
04:52and go with it.
05:04This is, this is so much fun.
05:06Yeah.
05:07Yeah, you're getting the hang of it fast.
05:09I like this.
05:09I like this a lot.
05:19I want to put a tenon on this end to put it into this chuck.
05:31Something about it makes me want to, you know, like pursue that perfectly smooth cylinder just because it feels right,
05:39you know?
05:40Yeah.
05:43Okay, let's drill a hole for the buds to go into, and then you can do your shape, your taper
05:50or whatever you want to that hole.
05:58Close the tool and come around with your body at the same time.
06:21Okay, I think you're good.
06:23Let's see.
06:25Oh, look at you.
06:26Oh, look at you.
06:26Nice job.
06:27Nice job.
06:29And you said you couldn't turn.
06:30I was...
06:32Well, now that it's stopped.
06:33Now that you...
06:35No, looks good.
06:36Looks very good.
06:38All right, so we'll do a little hand sanding right now.
06:41Blend this in a little bit, not sanding off too much.
06:47Sand it, circular motion, rotate the paper regularly.
06:54Put our sanding paste on.
06:56Probably need a little...
06:57So this is just a paste with some mild abrasive in it.
06:59It's got abrasive in it.
07:03I'll take a paper towel.
07:08Lightly work it in.
07:13You feel that?
07:17Glass.
07:18Yeah, pretty nice.
07:19So now what we'll do is we'll put a finish on that.
07:21So we'll use some oil.
07:31All right, so now it's ready to cut it off.
07:34Just don't hit the chuck.
07:36You get in and then come back and do it a little more.
07:39Look at that.
07:46Nice job.
07:47Look at that.
07:48Very little sanding.
07:50That's what I like to see.
07:52Oof.
07:55Lot of pressure there.
08:00All right, there you go.
08:02Nice job on that cut too, by the way.
08:04I like it.
08:04Very nice.
08:05This doesn't look exactly like the ones you made, but it looks like the top of a beer bottle, but
08:10I'm pretty proud of it.
08:11I think it looks great.
08:13They should all be a little bit different.
08:14So let's top it off with a couple of these expensive flowers.
08:18Make sure you keep water in there so it won't wilt.
08:20I think our homeowner is going to be very happy with this.
08:23Yeah.
08:24Well, I appreciate the lesson.
08:25I've got to say it takes a lot of focus.
08:27I could see this being a good hobby.
08:30It's a great stress buster for me because during the day you have a lot on your mind, a lot
08:34going on.
08:35Nighttime I go down, turn on my lathe, and you are focused on what you're doing.
08:40And you kind of let the other things fly away.
08:43It's a great little tool and a lot of fun.
08:46And look what you can get out of it.
08:47I know.
08:48This is too cool.
08:48Thanks so much.
08:49My pleasure.
08:50All right.
08:50See you later.
08:55Hey, Jen.
08:56Hey, Kev.
08:57Look at you and your rig for what, indoor growing?
09:00Getting ready.
09:01It's time.
09:01Very nice.
09:02So starting from seed.
09:04Yep.
09:04You want to know how it works?
09:05Sure.
09:05Tell me.
09:06Right.
09:06Well, first of all, pick your seeds, right?
09:08You know, figure out what you want to grow.
09:09Whether it's this whole area, start with a couple.
09:12Yep.
09:12Mm-hmm.
09:13Couple different options.
09:14Once you pick that, then you go to your trays.
09:17So let me show you the tray first.
09:19Please.
09:19All right.
09:20This is where you put seedling mix.
09:23Okay.
09:24Mm-hmm.
09:24So individual ones for a seed or two in each.
09:27Yep.
09:27This holds it up.
09:28It keeps it elevated.
09:29So when this goes back into this tray, this is the reservoir.
09:34Yeah.
09:34The drainage, this is helping with drainage.
09:37Oh.
09:38Mm-hmm.
09:38So that we don't overwater.
09:40Or so that they're not sitting in water.
09:41So they're not sitting in water.
09:42Because you don't want them to sit in water, otherwise they'll start to rot.
09:45Nice.
09:46Okay.
09:47Mm-hmm.
09:47And what are we putting in there?
09:48So this is the planting medium that you put in.
09:52It's a seed starter mix, right?
09:54So this is filled with organic materials, peat moss, perlite, which is so when you're watering
09:59it, the water goes pretty much straight through it.
10:01Yep.
10:02And specifically, you want to look for the stuff for the starting.
10:05Exactly.
10:06And there's a big difference between potting soil and starting.
10:08And then this is a seedling heat mat.
10:11It keeps it warmer.
10:12What we do is, yes, take that tray and you set it on and it just helps with the germination
10:18so the plant doesn't freeze and go into shock.
10:21So room temperature may not be warm enough for them.
10:24This is going to solve that problem.
10:25Right.
10:26Yes.
10:26It depends on what your room temperature is, but it wants to be around 70-ish degrees.
10:30Got it.
10:30Okay.
10:31And then the lights, obviously, if you're doing it indoors, we've got to get the proper
10:35light.
10:36This is your rig here?
10:37Yep.
10:37So these are UV lights.
10:38Have to have UV.
10:39Yep.
10:40Yep.
10:40Do I need something as sophisticated as this?
10:42Because this looks like you're really getting after it.
10:44Well, I have to.
10:45This is true.
10:46I don't know.
10:46No, you definitely don't need, you know, I got this for the organization.
10:50It tucks nicely into a corner.
10:52But, you know, you could use something like this light.
10:54It's really easy.
10:56Mmm.
10:56You can get it online anywhere.
10:58You can get any of this online.
10:59And then this just hooks to a table.
11:01Yep.
11:01And then you can go smaller scale.
11:04You know, you can just line up one of these trays if you want to start small.
11:07Okay.
11:08So this is the gear.
11:09What about tiny?
11:11Like, I can't do this all winter long, right?
11:14And doesn't it matter what I'm trying to grow?
11:15Yes.
11:16Okay.
11:16So what you do is look back to the previous year's average frost date in your area, right?
11:22So the last frost of the season, whatever the average it is, that's what I'm...
11:26That's what you're basing it off of.
11:27Okay.
11:28Then look at your seed packet on the back.
11:31Yeah.
11:31It says different weeks for different seeds.
11:33So this one says for these six to eight weeks, right?
11:37So you go back from the previous year's frost date, say it was April 20th, go back six
11:42to eight weeks from there.
11:43That's when you start.
11:45Okay.
11:46And I presume it's going to be different germination times and different lengths of times for different
11:51plants.
11:52Correct.
11:52Some are long, some are short.
11:53Yep.
11:54There's the cold season crops that come out earlier that are safer to put out and they
11:58thrive in that weather.
12:00And then, so those are like cabbages and broccoli and stuff like that.
12:04And then for example, the second wave would be like tomatoes, basil.
12:07They have like a more fragile leaf and they don't like the cold as much.
12:11Yeah.
12:12So it's starting to get complicated.
12:13Yeah.
12:13Now I've got to really.
12:14Well, this is where you get your journal.
12:16Oh, of course.
12:17Right?
12:17My seed, my seeding journal.
12:19Sit with your cigar in the corner with your seeding journal.
12:22Right?
12:22And then you say, okay, this is when I planted this at this date.
12:26These are the four things I want to grow in the cold season.
12:29And when those transition out, say you have lettuce or spinach, then those are done.
12:33You take them out and then put the other plants in their place.
12:36It's a whole sequence thing.
12:37Bah!
12:38The tomatoes are ready.
12:39Put them in the yard.
12:41Exactly.
12:42Cool.
12:42All right.
12:42Gear, methodology, all the stuff we need.
12:45Yeah.
12:45Perfect.
12:46And it's fun.
12:47Yeah.
12:47You're welcome.
12:52All right, Mark, you ready for some viewer mail?
12:54We sure are, Kev.
12:55I'm still calling it mail.
12:57Okay.
12:57Steve from Little Rock, Arkansas sends in this problem.
13:11All right.
13:12Okay.
13:12Well, very typical problem.
13:13I see it all the time.
13:15That, what we're looking at is a raised hearth.
13:18Under that is what we call a subbed hearth.
13:19And it's a monolithic concrete pour that supports the hearth and the firebox.
13:24Okay.
13:24So that separation is almost typical if it's not done properly.
13:28And that's what I suspect.
13:30But it is an easy fix.
13:31So you say monolithic pour, meaning that you would have a sub pour that was in behind the fireplace,
13:36out into the room.
13:37Exactly.
13:38Maybe that didn't happen or maybe that connection broke.
13:40Right.
13:40So what does he do?
13:41So all he's going to do is he's going to take a chisel and a hammer.
13:45This is my favorite chisel, so that's why I'm going to use it.
13:47But he wants to take that joint out all the way through.
13:51And he's going to use a little dab of water just so the masonry doesn't suck the water out of
13:55the mortar.
13:56Use a vacuum as well.
13:58And then all you're going to do is get some type N mortar.
14:01And you're going to get a trowel and a margin trowel.
14:03And you're going to just repack that mortar joint.
14:05One thing I do want to note, Kevin, is make sure that this margin trowel is thinner than the joint.
14:10That way you can get a full pack as you go.
14:12So it sounds like something he can do himself.
14:14And we're not really trying to fix the break.
14:16We're just trying to fill in the gap.
14:17Exactly.
14:17The settlement has happened.
14:18It's probably not going to continue.
14:20So that's why I say go fix it.
14:21Okay.
14:22All right.
14:22Next one comes to us from John.
14:24He is in Ohio.
14:26And he's got a similar situation with a raised hearth, firebox, and all of that.
14:30But in this case, that brick wall going all the way up to the ceiling, that has separated from, I
14:36guess, the wall behind it right there.
14:37Right.
14:38Exactly.
14:38So this problem occurred during installation.
14:41There are a couple steps that he skipped.
14:43Okay.
14:43When I see that vertical joint like that, I can see the mortar pulling away.
14:48The brick is not falling out.
14:50I lined it up with my eye.
14:51And you can see that trim on either side of the brick.
14:54That indicates that the fireplace is in place.
14:57If it wasn't, it would fall beyond that trim.
15:00So what's causing the separation if it's not pulling away?
15:02So the separation, again, really didn't happen.
15:06What happened was when you put the mortar joint in, it shrunk.
15:08The water in the mortar got sucked into this drywall.
15:12Okay.
15:13And it also got sucked into the brick.
15:15So what I would have done during installation is I would have put what we call a bond breaker.
15:19Okay.
15:20So all this is is a foil.
15:22You strip it in the back.
15:23You stick it to the drywall.
15:24That will not allow water to penetrate the drywall.
15:27I would take my paintbrush with a little bit of water.
15:30I would dab the back of the brick.
15:31It does the same thing.
15:32And then I'm using another material.
15:35This is just a styrofoam material that we called a backer rod.
15:38And if we didn't have that, when we packed the mortar in, it would just fall and we'd be there
15:43all day.
15:43But other than that, same process of packing.
15:46Again, make sure you use a thinner margin trowel than the joint itself.
15:49Wow.
15:50And that way you'll get a full pack.
15:51Also something John could do himself, you think?
15:53Absolutely.
15:54Beautiful.
15:54Yep.
15:55Two happy campers right there.
15:56Thank you, Mark.
15:56All right, Kevin.
16:02You must be Jimmy.
16:04Yes, sir.
16:04You wrote about garage doors.
16:06Oh, yes, absolutely.
16:07What's going on?
16:07So the garage doors, they work, but they don't work well.
16:11Okay.
16:11So when I'm coming home and I'm driving in the car, I have to drive almost all the way up
16:15to the door in order for it to work.
16:17All right.
16:17So it's a range issue.
16:18Yeah, exactly.
16:19Will it work from this close?
16:21Since I'm out of the car, probably.
16:22Let's give it a shot.
16:25Okay.
16:25Let's see.
16:26We got two garage door openers.
16:28These are the operators, half horsepower.
16:31It's chain driven.
16:32Okay.
16:32Let me take a look at the age on the units.
16:34So the units are manufactured 1999.
16:38So with 1999, it's close to 30 years old.
16:41So that's obviously an older, you know, garage door opener, but it had a good life so far.
16:45Sure.
16:45Yeah.
16:46That's a good sign.
16:46And that gray wire hanging down is actually the antenna.
16:50So that's what your remote connects to.
16:51We have safety sensors so that we have wires running up to the ceiling and they come down.
16:55They actually come down.
16:56Here's one white wire right here.
16:58It comes down to this right here.
16:59This is a safety sensor.
17:00Okay.
17:01Sending a laser that you can't see across to the other side.
17:03That's the receiver.
17:04The whole point is that if something's blocking it, it's not going to allow the garage door to close.
17:09Okay.
17:09So a couple of things.
17:11One, I got the green light on, which is good.
17:12It's got power and it's working.
17:14We have, you know, spider webs and some leaves and stuff like that.
17:17All right.
17:18So that's definitely one of the things that we'll clean up.
17:19Okay.
17:21Perfect.
17:21But the one thing I do like about this install is this unit right here has a red learn button.
17:26And that means that these units are upgradeable to put it on a Smart Hub platform.
17:31Wow.
17:32So we can install a Smart Hub platform.
17:33We can then take control of these devices with an app.
17:36So you can have the left side, right side, independently controlled, set schedules, all that.
17:39Good stuff.
17:40You're up for a project like that?
17:41Yeah, absolutely.
17:42That sounds incredible.
17:43Okay.
17:44So I laid out all the bits and pieces that we're going to be talking about today.
17:47First, it starts with the Smart Hub.
17:49So this is the actual Smart Hub that's going to be mounted to the wall six feet above the
17:53ground and it's going to see both garage doors.
17:55Okay.
17:56All right.
17:56So this is really the brain.
17:57Number one thing here is that we have good Wi-Fi coverage.
18:00Do we have good Wi-Fi here in the garage?
18:03We better.
18:04I work really hard to make sure that we have a strong Wi-Fi around the house.
18:06Okay, cool.
18:07Then we have power, obviously.
18:09So we're going to run power to it.
18:10It's a five foot cord.
18:11So we've got to be within five foot of receptacle for that.
18:14And then once it's ready and you're ready to go with compatibility, we then have a backplate.
18:18We can mount that to the wall with the anchors that are provided and make sure it's good
18:21to go.
18:22Okay, perfect.
18:22Makes sense.
18:23The manufacturer provides a safety card.
18:25So this is basically a label that's going to stick to the wall to let them know that
18:28it is connected to the internet and you can remotely control your garage doors from anywhere.
18:32So even if no one's home, right?
18:34Okay.
18:34So it's just letting people know that this system is in place and it's connected to the internet.
18:38Yeah, that makes a lot of sense.
18:39Yes.
18:39Now when this is in place, it's going to communicate with Bluetooth to one of the door sensors.
18:44Okay.
18:44So there's one for the left, one for the right.
18:46These door sensors operate off batteries.
18:48One of the tips here is to take a picture of the back so you know which one goes with
18:52what door.
18:53You have the model and serial number and of course there's a battery replacement.
18:56Okay, that's easy.
18:57And so once that's in place, you're going to have a really good connection between the
19:00two doors, the smart hub itself.
19:03Any last bit is going to be the wiring.
19:05So some of the safety sensors and some of the tacking up of wires, et cetera, to clean
19:08that up.
19:08We're going to be using this.
19:09It's 24 gauge two conductor cable, regular straightforward and great for garage doors.
19:14Oh, perfect.
19:15Excellent.
19:15Any questions?
19:17Yes.
19:17I mean, I don't have to use my clicker anymore.
19:19So your clicker is still going to work with the system.
19:21So you still get manual operation through the clicker.
19:23Okay.
19:23You'll get it through the wall, you know, keypad, et cetera.
19:26But you're still going to be able to use it through your phone.
19:28Beautiful.
19:28So you have the ability, you can use any of that.
19:30So that doesn't change.
19:31You can still use your garage clicker or you can use the app.
19:33I like options.
19:34Sounds good.
19:34So there is an app that you need to download.
19:36Okay.
19:36So I just want to make sure you get that installed and we can get started.
19:39All right.
19:40Perfect.
19:40Sounds great.
19:41Cool.
19:41Okay.
19:42So the first thing we're going to do is we're going to plug in the hub, right?
19:45To a receptacle.
19:46And this is a really great location here in the garage because we are on the opposite side
19:51of the two doors.
19:52Okay.
19:52The two doors are right there, which is great.
19:53And so when I plug this in, we're going to see it illuminate.
19:56If you could take your phone out.
19:57All right.
19:58Pull up the app.
20:00We can see the blue light is on.
20:02Okay.
20:03All right.
20:04It would like to pair.
20:05Pair it.
20:05Yep.
20:07Looks like it's working.
20:08It's working.
20:08It's changing from blue to green.
20:09That means it's getting connected to your wifi.
20:11Beautiful.
20:12And we're going to get the first door sensor.
20:15Okay.
20:15The light should come on.
20:19Okay.
20:20That was quick.
20:21This location right here, I think it's a really good location because it can see the
20:25smart hub.
20:26That's going to be mounted on that wall right to this spot.
20:28Perfect.
20:28Clean this surface.
20:32How about here?
20:33That looks good right there.
20:34Now, the next thing is to pair the smart hub with the operator.
20:37The red button.
20:38The red button.
20:39You got it.
20:39Since you're taller, you can do the honors.
20:41I got it.
20:42Press it.
20:42Okay.
20:44Now, hit next.
20:48Holy cow.
20:49Voila.
20:51That's unbelievable.
20:53There you go.
20:53Perfect.
20:55Move to the motor or we hit the learn button on that one.
20:58All right.
20:58Perfect.
20:59Same thing as last time.
21:03All right.
21:03Let's see if we're paired.
21:05There we go.
21:06All right.
21:07They're in business.
21:08Love it.
21:19Okay.
21:19We have two different staples.
21:20We have a low voltage staple that you use a hammer for.
21:23And you have a low voltage staple that you use a staple gun for.
21:26Both of these are fine for the low voltage cable.
21:28And we're going to use the staple gun version because it's going to make us work a lot faster.
21:33Makes a lot of sense.
21:41So, the next bit is to make sure that the sensors are clean.
21:49All right, Jimmy.
21:50Pull out the app and let's see it in action.
21:52All right.
21:53Let's see it work.
21:53Let's give it a go.
21:54So, you're going to do the left first.
21:56Let's do the left one.
21:56All right.
21:57So, it's only going to work one at a time, right?
21:58So, left first, obviously.
22:00All right.
22:00Beautiful.
22:00This is one hub communicating with each motor at a time.
22:02Okay.
22:03Okay.
22:05Left one works great.
22:07All right.
22:07Let's try the right one.
22:09Right one works great too.
22:10Look at that.
22:11That's incredible.
22:13So, will I be able to add anybody else to the app or just me?
22:15Yeah.
22:15So, you can add your wife and anybody else you want to the app.
22:19And you can actually assign privileges in terms of how much access you want them to have.
22:22Let's say a dog walker.
22:23So, they have access maybe Mondays and Wednesdays from 9 to 11.
22:26You can set those time privileges.
22:27So, they have access like that.
22:29So, not 24 hours like I would have.
22:30That's right.
22:31Oh, man.
22:32Love to hear it.
22:32Well, this is absolutely better than I could have imagined.
22:35Awesome.
22:35Thank you so much.
22:35All right, Jimmy.
22:36Appreciate it.
22:36Yeah.
22:37Thanks so much.
22:37Absolutely.
22:42Next time on Ask This Old House, Lee gives some tips on how to properly mow your lawn.
22:49Then, do you have questions on how to vet a contractor?
22:53Well, our team offers some insight.
22:55It's a two-way street.
22:57So, that contractor is vetting you just the way you're vetting them.
23:00And, Mark heads to Washington State to help some homeowners replace their front walk.
23:07All that on Ask This Old House.
23:12Thanks.
23:12Thanks for listening.
23:15Thanks for 있는 programs.
23:15You may return to storage ¿e mi tamañek or a nothing?
23:16I'm going to Care Tôi World.
23:17Hey!
23:18Huh?
23:40I'm going to土 or my philosopher,
23:40I'm going to take an intro and rebel in a Mein L.
23:40you
