In the quiet, residential neighbourhood of Ghim Moh Link, Singapore, Project 26 was designed by interior design studio Resistance with a dramatic first impression in mind. The entryway features a floor to ceiling dark green palette that flows directly into the kitchen where it’s accented with a white backsplash and blue countertop. The bold colour separates the kitchen and laundry from the rest of the home, and designates it an ‘active’ space in contrast to the soft white palette of the living areas. The living room itself has raised furniture and concealed storage to maximise the feeling of space, and this continues into the bedroom where large windows and adjustable storage allow for future flexibility. A bifold door to the bathroom opens up yet more floor space, and white tiles throughout enlarge the room visually. This consistent look paired with materials selected for their ability to patina over time, give the home an authentic, warm feeling perfectly fit for a small home in an area making room for newer, younger residents.

00:03The design concept was based on a utilitarian approach with a minimalist aesthetic.
00:11We were inspired by how material works and age. We wanted to create a living and breathing space
00:21that would develop a patina as the homeowner use it over time. So we'll create a story in this home.
00:30I'm Jack, an interior designer and co-founder of Resistance.
00:35My name is Jia Hui. I'm an interior designer at Resistance.
00:46The apartment is located in Gimmo Ling.
00:50Gimmo is a neighbourhood located in Queenstown, Singapore.
00:54There are elderly people that live in Gimmo for years.
00:59And a new generation that is attracted to the central region of Gimmo Ling.
01:05Our client's brief was to retain the original bones as much as possible.
01:14We demolished part of the wall beside the main door in order to open up the space.
01:19This allowed us to place the dining table near the kitchen while still maintaining a circulation path.
01:25We sealed up one of the existing doorways which adds extra counter space for the kitchen.
01:33Creating a dramatic first impression upon entering the flat.
01:37The entrance leads us to the kitchen seamlessly with a unifying dark green colour scheme.
01:44The dark green extends beyond the floors to the walls, ceiling, carpentry and countertops.
01:52It's very common in Singapore for a home to have a bomb shelter.
01:57The unsightly matted door of the bomb shelter was painted to blend into the foyer area.
02:05Here, the bomb shelter is used as extra storage space.
02:12A perforated steel panel was added in front of the main door to provide privacy and allow cross ventilation in
02:20the living room.
02:23Demarketed by a minimalist white scheme, the living room and the bedroom make up the majority of the unit.
02:30The white walls and white painted flooring creates a sharp contrast to the foyer area.
02:36It's served as a visual cue to slow down and unwind as one enters the resting zone.
02:46Most of the furniture have legs to raise them off the ground.
02:50This makes the furniture appear less heavy, therefore looking more spacious.
02:56Shared curtains are selected to create soft lighting while providing privacy.
03:05We carved out a concealed storage area in the living room.
03:09It is hidden behind two sliding doors to stow away clutter while maintaining the overall restrained colour palette.
03:20The kitchen continues the same colour scheme as the entrance.
03:27The cabinet's floor and walls are all in the same green that gives the area a seamless look.
03:36The white mosaic tile was selected to lighten up the space.
03:41The dark navy blue countertop was selected as an eclectic colour twist.
03:46Switches and plugs were also thoughtfully hidden beneath the top hung cabinet as a detail.
03:58We altered the position of laundry rack to be against the wall to allow sunlight and natural air flow from
04:05the windows during the day.
04:07The ovens and washing machine were carefully planned and built in to minimise their presence in the space, yet maximise
04:14storage in a small space.
04:17The fridge, one of the biggest appliances, was discreetly placed facing away from the entrance of the kitchen to reduce
04:25the visual disruption to the space.
04:31The bedroom entrance is through a door from the living room.
04:35The design language is the same neutral and airy look from the living room.
04:41There are large windows for natural lights in the bedroom.
04:46There is a mirror that reflects the space and adds to the overall airy feel.
04:54We picked a bed without a headboard to retain the lightness of the space.
05:00There is adjustable wall storage and hanging storage to allow flexibility to the client's needs.
05:09We used a bifold door for the bathroom to create a more usable space in the small room.
05:15Frosted wire glass was used to provide privacy and it speaks the same language with the gritted mosaic tiles.
05:24Floor to ceiling white mosaic tiles were used to enlarge the bathroom visually.
05:29A half-height wall along the back of the shower was designed to place shampoo bottles without breaking the design
05:36language.
05:38Epoxy flooring was used in the living and bedroom areas to create a smooth, bright and seamless look.
05:45As we walk upon it for a period of time, it will reveal the traffic and the story behind the
05:51home.
05:53Given the space is small, having a consistent look does give the entire space a bigger look and a spacious
06:01sense.
06:05Understanding our client's lifestyle is important for us to plan and curate what is to be hidden and what is
06:11to be displayed in the house.
06:13It can be a joy living in small spaces.
06:41Thank you very much.
06:57You
