Featuring the striking use of Cumaru (Brazilian teak) Veneer throughout, DB Apartment is a light-filled, flexible space that transforms depending on its owner’s needs. By cleverly removing the original terrace doors, architects Studio Papaya created a versatile indoor-outdoor space that overlooks the city. This multi-purpose space serves as an extension of the open-plan kitchen and dining area, where a circular wooden shelf built into the ceiling is the centrepiece. A set of bi-fold wood panels that intersect with a sliding door serve to section off the new living room that doubles as a second bedroom for guests. This leads to the main bedroom where a custom platform bed provides ample additional storage, while an L-shaped wardrobe cleverly combines mirrors and wood veneer to enhance the space.

00:02the client wanted a space that could transform in order to meet his daily needs but also to
00:09accommodate more than one person for the times when he has visitors the apartment was a blank
00:16canvas it didn't have any finishing on the walls or floors except the external area of the terrace
00:23and the two bathrooms that were fully equipped my name is samuel garcia and my name is delias lonano
00:31and we are architects at studio papaya in sao paulo brazil the apartment is located in moema sao paulo
00:45it's close to public transport including an airport nearby there are restaurants
00:52cafes and shops within walking distance from the apartment
00:59the apartment building was built in 2021 it is a residential building and is occupied by mainly
01:06younger owners or families the client is a 36 years old professional that loves traveling
01:14and kite surfing he wanted to reflect his preference for neutral colors and materials
01:20we wanted to mastermind the space by increasing flexibility functionality and visual appeal combined
01:29with carefully chosen furniture and lighting to achieve an apartment that exudes elegance and
01:35a welcoming ambience there was a small entrance a living room and kitchen separated by a half-height wall
01:44a large terrace a guest bedroom and bathroom and the main bedroom with an ensuite
01:53we removed two of the walls from the guest bedroom and replaced them with a sliding door on one side
02:00and the folding door on the other the room was then converted into a living room that doubles as a
02:06guest
02:06room we then removed the half-height wall from the kitchen and the doors leading to the terrace
02:12we were able to recover a lot of floor space that would otherwise be used as just a terrace
02:22upon entering the apartment you are immediately in the open kitchen dining and living space with views of the city
02:31we painted the wall and door in a rich dark green color which flows from the entrance to the main
02:37bedroom
02:39by the entrance there is a custom designed wall shelf unit made from kumaru wood vernier which
02:46complements the polished concrete floor there is a small cupboard for shoes a tall mirror and a space
02:53to hang clothes on the wall the wall shelf unit wraps around the corner of the room into a sturdy
03:02nook with
03:02floating shelves on both sides of the nook the nook provides additional storage for the owner's guitar
03:09and kiteboarding equipment
03:13the kitchen and dining room is in a large open utilitarian space that could meet different needs
03:19such as family dinners informal meetings and daily cooking
03:24the main kitchen functions are along the wall
03:27it is finished in the same kumaru vernier as other parts of the apartment
03:33the countertop and splashback is made from a black granite
03:37there is space for an oven for when the client needs it in the future
03:44the floor here is a light polished concrete which keeps the space bright and airy
03:50we drop the ceiling above to make an oval opening the oval shape provided a shelf to put plants on
03:59we also hit the air conditioner unit here
04:05as a result of removing the terrace doors we were able to extend the kitchen out towards the terrace
04:12we decided to use a black wood vernier for this section to visually mark the new area
04:19this allowed us to create a large floor to ceiling storage unit for household items and the laundry
04:25space with the sink beside it the water heater is also hidden within the storage unit and we added
04:33ventilation on the door and sides which we disguised with floating shelves so it's less obvious
04:41the removal of the terrace doors left a support beam so we covered it in mirrors to make it look
04:48less obvious
04:49we added a bar height table to the end of the beam to create an informal surface
04:54to have breakfast or to use for cooking prep
05:00on the other side of the terrace there is a mini bar and a hidden espresso machine
05:07we also hid a part of the air conditioning unit here
05:15along the balcony rails of the terrace we added tall glass windows
05:20when the glass windows are open it still gives a feeling of being outside
05:30we removed the wall between the living room and the guest bedroom this transformation allowed us to
05:36use sliding panels to replace the traditional walls of the bedroom it turned it into a versatile space
05:43that could function both as a living room with a tv and the guest bedroom
05:51in the main bedroom we designed the custom platform for the bed to rise it off the ground and create
05:57additional storage on the side and underneath custom headboards in gray cotton fabric not only add to the
06:06overall aesthetics but also provide thermal and acoustic comfort we also use the same materials from the
06:14headboard to create a soft floor to ceiling wall on the other side of the room
06:21the wardrobe has an l-shaped design in the corner of the bedroom we use a mixture of mirrors and
06:28wood
06:28vernier for the closet to maximize the feeling of space in the bedroom the ensuite bedroom benefits
06:37from natural light and features a white color palette creating a sense of lightness
06:45the guest bedroom that lacks windows embraces a darker
06:49ambience and showcases a round backlit mirror as its centerpiece
06:57designing a limited space requires attention to the smallest details
07:01so the primary intent was to work with colors and materials that could bring identity
07:06while creating a smooth fusion between form and function the careful integration of multi-functional
07:14areas smart storage solutions and flexible furniture arrangements not only optimize space but also
07:22also promote a sense of openness versatility and comfort
