00:02sure damn we got a good player from the cubs the maple masher uh i laughed when i heard that

00:10promo there and uh in that so what a great series for him i mean you know oh you know
00:16you come you
00:17come to a new organization you come in a big trade i'm sure you know feeling a little bit
00:21of pressure wanting to get off to a good start and and he certainly did and he came through big
00:26for us obviously yesterday with the walk-off but he had some really good at bats all weekend long and
00:32showcased um you know the the parts of his game you know we were we were so excited about um
00:37acquiring
00:38him hey clayton we we got to run through this so i and this is from liam hicks who who
00:43play with them
00:44and and you've got some guys on the canadian team a lot of people probably didn't know auto lopez and
00:49liam hicks and of course owen casey all played for the canadian team for the world baseball classic
00:55but um i i thought it was really really interesting so liam hicks is a yeah he didn't get
01:01off to a great start in in spring and then he joins us with the canadian team and he all
01:06of a sudden
01:07gets seven hits and then he comes back and and we get this did you have any idea i know
01:12he's a top
01:13prospect and he's a big part of the trade to get get rid of one of your best pitchers but
01:18do you have
01:18any idea did you see signs of this when he came back from the canadian team i mean we we
01:25did and
01:25i saw the bats before he left um you know the bats were solid so we weren't i certainly wasn't
01:31putting
01:31any stock in okay you know so much in the performance and maybe you know going out and
01:36getting into that wbc environment you know the games the adrenaline uh you know kind of you know
01:42really tapped in and got him going you know then when he came back um you know his on-field
01:47work
01:47and his at-bats in the games uh were good leading up to the start of the season and he's
01:53certainly
01:53been pretty bowed in uh in the early going okay so so we could sit and talk about big red
01:59or the
01:59maple masher and all the other things because he he had a big hit like you said in every game
02:03and then
02:04just a beautiful swing last night on that home run just gorgeous looking swing on it but
02:09i got it got to get to the bullpen i i had to go back and look at the box
02:13scores i knew we were
02:14going to have you on last night the bullpen didn't give up any runs at all in three games what
02:21what a
02:21start i thought it was a closer i go well maybe it was a setup guys it was everybody that
02:26pitched um
02:27wow they they had a great great three days joe and we we came this feeling very confident uh in
02:36that
02:36in that group of arms and including some you know some guys that you know didn't make the team that
02:41were very good we had a lot of really talented arms and uh yeah we got two great starts from
02:47sandy
02:48and ori which helped shorten the first two games and you know having pete at the back end he's off
02:53to a good start again you know new team to come in and get a couple saves right away um
02:57sure feels
02:58good for him and andrew nardi coming back from so much missed time and coming right into a you know
03:03one run game on opening day uh so yeah collectively those guys all all pitched very well and gave us
03:10a chance to you know be in and uh win all those games yeah you said it p fairbanks gets
03:15two saves
03:16right off the bat i always wondered because you're in another tight one is there any thought of you
03:21might pitch him in that third game or or not or was he getting the day off no matter what
03:26yeah there
03:27wasn't any thought this early in the season had just i think and some of those joe they're just
03:31better to make the call like before just you know where you're not emotional just you know what
03:35pete's going to be down we're not going to go three in a row this early in the season there
03:39may be a
03:40point this year where um you know entertain that but i don't think certainly right now wanted to
03:45push that hey clayton the other nice thing max meyer nice bounce back after that first inning after
03:50that double down the line cleared the bases for him the way to come back and and pitch and i
03:55know you
03:55feel good about him and i know he's hard on himself to start with but a little maturity there the
04:00way
04:00kind of bounce back after that huh yes certainly big i don't know if that's how that ends up playing
04:06out last year joe i think that you know he yeah first inning certainly not how you script it uh
04:11but
04:12you know what max got punched and he righted the ship and he just kept putting up zeros and then
04:18when
04:18you leave the game it's five innings there's three runs the score is three to two your team is right
04:23in
04:23the ball game so he should be very proud of that um and it bodes well you know being a
04:28starting
04:29pitcher in this league like that's what you you have to be able to do when you you know certainly
04:33a day he didn't he was mechanics weren't quite right he didn't have feel for pitches but find a
04:37way to when you exit you know your team still has a chance to win the game boy that happened
04:42and boy
04:43the lights out as you said uh people aren't getting much off that that bullpen is uh is strong did
04:49you
04:49have a good idea that the arms were that good coming out of spring you felt pretty good that
04:53obviously not as good as they were to start with but that you're going to have a lot of success
04:59we really like the arm talent i mean we did and you combine that with our pitching staff our
05:05coaches ability to improve guy stuff and we've seen that already the last year plus with daniel
05:10bill heasel and rob marcello brandon man they're very good at enhancing repertoires arsenals and also
05:17improving guy stuff so you think you got talented arms so we know we can help get better and i
05:22think our
05:22and our pitching staff as a whole joe i mean we're right at the top of uh average you know
05:27fastball
05:27velocity so we have guys that throw fast and they can make the ball move a lot and some different
05:32types of looks uh so really like what the composition of the bullpen uh is right now how hard is
05:38it early
05:38in the season get everybody in and get them a get them a little playing time even what i always
05:43i know
05:44you like lefties and righties going against each other at the plate but trying to get everybody early
05:48playing time it is a little bit you do and you get we have the four days off a little
05:53bit different
05:54this year leading up to the first game uh and you know almost you know rust is setting because i
05:59know
05:59i'm going to have to use everyone right uh for us to have a great season right and we'll see
06:03that
06:04whether you know it's coming off the bench starting and even the pitchers you know we get on we thought
06:08how talented the group is and like god you know it's just uh you love the 70s from sandy and
06:13ory but
06:14it just means that those guys in the bullpen are you know chomping at it to pitch uh we're in
06:1810
06:18days from now they're all going to be you know loving the seven inning starts um so it is kind
06:23of wanting to get everyone get their feet wet get out there get into the game uh try to keep
06:28guys fresh
06:29and you know early on especially just trying to keep everyone involved because i'm going to need
06:34them all to um you know to be in their best spot to help us win you know um this
06:39looked a lot like
06:40last year man hanging around get a two to one win get uh get the four three come back and
06:46then the
06:47four three walk off and i was thinking my gosh man this is like deja vu from a year ago
06:52on some of the
06:53things that this team's doing and believing even with two outs and line drive you're going oh tough
06:59lock it there at first oh my god now they're and get a double and then you get the home
07:04run i mean it it
07:05feels a little bit there's a confidence with this group of guys that is just
07:10it's back i certainly hope they're confident i mean they they should be that we're you know we
07:16feel like we're we're good but we have to play well to to win and to give ourselves chances to
07:22win
07:22but hopefully joe as many close games as we played you know the last two two and a half months
07:28last year
07:29right we were in a lot of games like this whole weekend and i mean you saw like you have
07:33to really
07:33execute at a high level to to win those games so you know hopefully they're they're very comfortable
07:39in these tighter uh tight contests because we just we've been in a high number of them um you
07:46know in the last uh you know a couple minutes of last season as well as the start of this
07:49year
07:50well i'll tell you it's uh so fun i those games that that thing last night he hits that home
07:55run and
07:55the reaction from the guys and especially for him was uh was great but is he okay with big red
08:02i mean
08:02he he definitely uh he's definitely a carrot head there is he is he all right with the big red
08:06stuff
08:06or or you think the maple masher might i like that maple masher that might be big the big maple

08:14big right i think some guys definitely call him rojo um i think right now he probably is just walking
08:20on cloud nine and you can probably get away with calling him anything so what we have to figure out
08:25which one um he really is most into well listen congratulations keep it going uh three more
