Rich House Poor House S12 E10 watch full. #RichHousePoorHouse
Transcript
00:00:00In Britain, the top 10% own over half the country's wealth.
00:00:06I have nice cars, I own a couple of resources.
00:00:09It feels nice to have money.
00:00:12But while the rich are getting richer...
00:00:14It's a very profitable business that turns over well over £10 million a year.
00:00:18The poor are getting poorer.
00:00:21It's tough.
00:00:22Hit hard by relentless price rises.
00:00:24A lot of posh people think poor people just sit on their bums all day on benefits.
00:00:29Once we've spent on food, don't really have anything left over.
00:00:33I had bailiffs come in.
00:00:36Might be on its way out.
00:00:39Now, two families are swapping homes.
00:00:42That is very different.
00:00:43Yes.
00:00:44How many windows does a house need?
00:00:46How many doors?
00:00:48Budget.
00:00:48All right, this is where I get serious.
00:00:51Oh, God.
00:00:53And lives.
00:00:54It's our bloody work.
00:00:56It was way more challenging than I thought it would be.
00:00:59Champagne!
00:01:00I'm in heaven.
00:01:01To find out if money really does buy happiness.
00:01:06I love to have a walk in order.
00:01:08Oh, my goodness!
00:01:11Never been in the limo in the last.
00:01:14Or do people matter most?
00:01:16This is the nicest family time that us three have had together in years.
00:01:21And when they finally meet...
00:01:23Hello!
00:01:25...lives are changed forever.
00:01:27We'd like to gift you a van.
00:01:31We want to back your vision to a value of £100,000.
00:01:35Oh, my God!
00:01:35It's going to change everything for the better.
00:01:43The town of Wilmslow, near Manchester, is one of the most affluent in the UK.
00:01:48It's been home to some of the most famous faces in football.
00:01:53We're talking the Beckhams, Roonies and Rinaldos of this world.
00:02:00Houses don't get more luxurious than where businessman Joe Seeley hangs his hat.
00:02:05I would estimate the house is worth somewhere around £3.5 million at the moment.
00:02:10It's got six bedrooms, seven bathrooms, two luxury kitchens, plus a cinema room, gymnasium and indoor pool.
00:02:24It's my family home.
00:02:26I think that we worked hard, me and my wife, for this home, for our children and for ourselves.
00:02:31Manchester and football go hand in hand.
00:02:34And the beautiful games played a big part in Joe's life.
00:02:39My dad was a footballer.
00:02:41Played for Man United, Aston Villa.
00:02:42Everyone knew who my dad was.
00:02:44Close family, small family.
00:02:46Very loving.
00:02:48Joe and his wife, Nicole, have got two children.
00:02:51They've both left home now and Nicole's also away for the week.
00:02:57He'll be joined on the swap by close family friend, Tracy.
00:03:01Joe and I met through our connection with my son, Dylan.
00:03:04Dylan was a West Ham professional football player.
00:03:09Back then, Joe was a football agent and Dylan one of his clients until tragedy struck.
00:03:16When Dylan was 17, he was diagnosed with testicular cancer.
00:03:23And in 2014, we said goodbye to an amazing young man.
00:03:29Joe was there for him right to the end.
00:03:32Joe and his family worked closely with West Ham to organise the funeral.
00:03:37I'll be forever grateful for them being there at a time where I just didn't know how to function.
00:03:44After Dylan's death, Tracy gave up a high-powered executive job to form a cancer charity in his memory, DT38.
00:03:52So we now raise awareness and educate people around testicular cancer.
00:04:00Joe's a trustee of the charity and working together has created a strong bond.
00:04:05I would describe Joe as fiercely loyal and just so much fun to be around.
00:04:12With shares in 22 businesses, Joe turns over millions a year.
00:04:18I invested in businesses and the one that most people know now is Mr Whippy.
00:04:22I'm the joint major shareholder in that and I'm running that business day-to-day now.
00:04:28He's got to a stage in life where he has both money and time to indulge himself.
00:04:35I own a couple of race horses, I have nice cars.
00:04:39I can't believe that I like caviar, but I do.
00:04:49Just over 30 miles away, Widness, on the outskirts of Liverpool, couldn't be more different.
00:04:56It's one of the poorest towns in Cheshire.
00:05:01It's home to single mum, Steph, and her two children, Amelia, 12, and Darcy, 7.
00:05:08Our family is small but strong.
00:05:12We support each other.
00:05:14She's the best at the van, yes.
00:05:17And she's getting going.
00:05:21Steph rents a three-bedroom house that's seen better days.
00:05:27The downstairs floor is coming apart.
00:05:31Amelia's bedroom has mould.
00:05:33I am completely petrified of moving that piece of wallpaper because you can see it running right down the side
00:05:38of the wall.
00:05:39She works up to six days a week from home doing phone sales, selling holidays she can only dream of.
00:05:48I mean, I would highly recommend this one.
00:05:50It is slightly more.
00:05:52But despite working long hours and being brilliant at her job, she struggles to make ends meet.
00:05:59Roughly what I'm left with after I've paid to keep the house and everything running is about £98 a week.
00:06:07And that's to cover food and anything else that we may need.
00:06:14Because Steph's both cash and time poor, her girls have to come first.
00:06:19Even though it costs her, their big treat is Morris dancing.
00:06:23They live and breathe it.
00:06:26How my ceiling light hasn't fell off from Amelia practising upstairs is an achievement in itself.
00:06:33Oh, thank you, pudding.
00:06:37Family means everything to her.
00:06:39Steph's mum, Gail, lives just up the road.
00:06:42She's determined to join them on the swap if she can.
00:06:45We're just like little ride or dies, the four of us together.
00:06:50It's getting old, it's no good, isn't it?
00:06:52Gail's been battling ill health and she's a constant worry for Steph.
00:06:57Scrumptious, isn't it?
00:07:01It's another challenge for a family that's seen tough times.
00:07:05Cancer took both Steph's grandfather and her sister.
00:07:09My sister passed away and it was dark for a couple of months and then Amelia was born.
00:07:15And she just brought this light, this huge sunshine into everybody's lives.
00:07:21And she still does that every single day.
00:07:27Sorry.
00:07:31I think what I want to gain from this week is to show my children they don't have to graph
00:07:36like mum 50 hours a week to just about get by.
00:07:39I love you, give me a kiss.
00:07:43Joe might love his luxuries, but he's also got a big heart.
00:07:47He's hoping he can help someone turn things around and take their life in a new direction.
00:07:53At some point there's a sliding doors moment and that sets you off on that path.
00:07:56And I think you have to be brave and also people behind you that tell you you can do it
00:08:02and not everyone has that.
00:08:07Day one and it's time to swap houses.
00:08:11Come on then, let's go get dressed.
00:08:13Steph's having her usual busy morning getting Amelia and Darcy off to school.
00:08:18Right, love you.
00:08:19They'll come straight on to the swap house.
00:08:23Joe's worrying about leaving his home comforts behind.
00:08:27I like everything about my house, I love going in the gym, I love my coffee machine.
00:08:33Steph's already looking forward to having more me time.
00:08:38Be kind of told, oh, take some time for yourself and stuff.
00:08:42I think it's going to be strange.
00:08:46It's only 30 miles between their houses, but their lifestyles are worlds apart.
00:08:58I didn't bring my tea bags.
00:09:00I didn't.
00:09:00Did you not?
00:09:01No.
00:09:01You've got no tea bags.
00:09:03What do you expect?
00:09:04What are we going to get?
00:09:05I think I've zeroed my expectations.
00:09:08So I'm going, I'll go like full in a city, power block a state.
00:09:12Rubbish.
00:09:12Burnt our cars.
00:09:16Steph and Gail have reached Leafy Wilmslow.
00:09:19Well, it's renowned, isn't it, for being a wealthy place.
00:09:25The houses are nice, aren't they?
00:09:32First impressions could set the mood for the week.
00:09:35Home sweet home, Tracy.
00:09:36OK.
00:09:37It's got very old drain pipes.
00:09:41I'm going to get a problem with damp.
00:09:44You've got a chandelier out.
00:09:46You've got a chandelier outside the front door.
00:09:48What?
00:09:51Coming up, life on a budget gets off to a rocky start.
00:09:56Probably have five hours of sleep.
00:09:58Joe, there's no hot water.
00:10:02Steph discovers that both family's lives have been touched by tragedy.
00:10:06I'm crying for Joe.
00:10:07Yeah.
00:10:08Because she lost everything.
00:10:09Oh, no.
00:10:16For single mum, Steph, and her family, every day's a struggle.
00:10:21I don't show anyone or let anyone know that I'm getting stressed.
00:10:24Getting old's no good, you know.
00:10:28Businessman Joe Seeley doesn't have a worry in the world.
00:10:32I can't believe that I like caviar, but I do.
00:10:37And when rich and poor change places, it's a shock for both.
00:10:44In we go.
00:10:47I love you, mummy.
00:10:49I couldn't have any other mum as good as you.
00:10:51That's nice, isn't it?
00:10:52That's sweet, yeah.
00:10:54The Seeleys.
00:10:55So that's going to be the last name, isn't it?
00:10:58Seeleys.
00:10:59Come on, mother.
00:11:00Get on board with it.
00:11:01Get with it.
00:11:02Right.
00:11:04Oh, my gosh.
00:11:07Oh, it's beautiful, isn't it?
00:11:10That life is bigger than my house.
00:11:14Everyone's first task is to discover as much as they can about their house.
00:11:19What was it about that?
00:11:22I wonder what they thought.
00:11:23Dancer of the day.
00:11:25He's very small.
00:11:26He's a quite young child.
00:11:27Five to six years old.
00:11:28Yeah.
00:11:29This one's 11 to 12.
00:11:30Yeah, so it's two kids.
00:11:33Doesn't look like a house.
00:11:35It's got children.
00:11:37No, actually, it doesn't.
00:11:38No.
00:11:40There's a picture of the couple.
00:11:42Ah.
00:11:43Oh, they look nice.
00:11:46This must be maybe mum and daughter.
00:11:49What do they look like?
00:11:51Hmm.
00:11:52Maybe?
00:11:53Yeah, maybe.
00:11:54Where in a house like this would you find the tea bags?
00:12:03Well, Chris, it's like my one.
00:12:06So this is the same lady.
00:12:07The kids are the same.
00:12:08Yeah.
00:12:10Utility room.
00:12:12The utility room is home to prize family photos.
00:12:17Les Sealy.
00:12:18Oh, look at the background.
00:12:21Oh, Stephanie!
00:12:23I know.
00:12:23Look.
00:12:24I know.
00:12:25I know.
00:12:27Being Liverpool fans, we may need to holy water ourselves when we get home.
00:12:31She's a goalie.
00:12:34So if that's Les Sealy, is that...
00:12:39..his dad.
00:12:41I wonder what he does then.
00:12:43Could, like, the son be football-related?
00:12:49Two names.
00:12:51Amelia Darcy.
00:12:54Much like Christmas.
00:12:55They're shoes, they're dancing shoes.
00:12:59Trophies.
00:13:00Yeah.
00:13:02Morris dancing.
00:13:05I do have a photo wall like this and it's nice to see that it's not just me
00:13:09that likes to not brag but kind of put it out there for the world to see.
00:13:13This is our family, this is who we are.
00:13:17Yeah, I mean, looking at the pictures that are around, she's a single mum.
00:13:22Little office staff.
00:13:25I mean, she works from home.
00:13:28Being here when the children get home, that's a big comfort for a mum.
00:13:33Back in Wilmslow, two very excited young girls have arrived.
00:13:40Oh, it's massive.
00:13:47Wow.
00:13:50It's huge.
00:13:51How tall is that light, Darcy?
00:13:53Is that taller than our house?
00:13:55No.
00:13:57Each family has left a welcome card for their mystery guests.
00:14:01There is a gym out back.
00:14:03Oh.
00:14:03A cinema upstairs.
00:14:06No way.
00:14:07With popcorn and sweets and an indoor pool and sauna to enjoy.
00:14:15We thought you may like some of our favourite treats for a movie night.
00:14:19We said the same thing.
00:14:19Yeah.
00:14:20Mum, Steph, Nan-Gal, Amelia and Darcy.
00:14:23Have a wonderful week.
00:14:25Love, Jo and Tracy.
00:14:33Now to discover the all-important sleeping arrangements.
00:14:37It's one of the kids' rooms, isn't it?
00:14:39All papers paling and it's a bit damp.
00:14:41Ceiling paper's coming off.
00:14:43I wonder if it's a house they own or if it's one they rent.
00:14:47Normally, when you rent, you don't have that luxury
00:14:50of being able to change all these things.
00:14:53Darcy's room is tiny.
00:14:55What's going to happen when she's older?
00:14:58Normally, they want a bigger bed and then they want a, you know,
00:15:01a small double, don't they?
00:15:02Can you get a minute?
00:15:03Because that's a daily bed.
00:15:06It's no surprise that Darcy's already chosen her new bedroom
00:15:09and she's desperate to show it to Mum.
00:15:13Oh, it's pink.
00:15:15It's very pink.
00:15:16It's definitely a girly room.
00:15:21Oh, good.
00:15:21This is a good-sized room, Jo.
00:15:23It's got a TV.
00:15:25Dibs.
00:15:26It's a lot smaller than what I'm used to.
00:15:29I mean, my bed's big at home, but it's not this big.
00:15:36Now, it's crunch time.
00:15:38How much spending money do they have for their week
00:15:41at the other end of the wealth divide?
00:15:4320, 40, 60.
00:15:47It's insane before we even know how much it is.
00:15:5198.50.
00:15:5298.70.
00:15:5398.72.
00:15:54Just sure of a tonne.
00:15:5816, 70, 98.
00:16:02How can you howl?
00:16:04Two grand.
00:16:06For a week.
00:16:06For a week.
00:16:08There'll be no caviar this week, Trice.
00:16:10There'll be no caviar.
00:16:11There might not be eggs.
00:16:14They know their budget, and they've also left each of their activity boards for the week.
00:16:20Morris dancing.
00:16:21That's you.
00:16:22No, I am not dancing with bells on my...
00:16:25No, I'm not dancing.
00:16:26It'll be fun.
00:16:27Horse riding.
00:16:28Horse riding.
00:16:31Hairdresses.
00:16:32What can I make for?
00:16:34The big pitch.
00:16:35So I work in sales, so you do like a sales pitch.
00:16:38Like a sales pitch.
00:16:39Yes, you know what I mean?
00:16:40Food shop on a budget.
00:16:42And then Gail's Garden.
00:16:44I've got Asher turf.
00:16:46It's the best thing I've ever bought.
00:16:47I've not had to do anything to it for 11 years.
00:16:49It's a room for it.
00:16:51Piccolino?
00:16:52Piccolino.
00:16:53Might have something to do with food.
00:16:59It's been a long day,
00:17:00and food's on Joe's mind too.
00:17:05It's a strange truth,
00:17:06but in every house,
00:17:08there's a half-used packet of pasta.
00:17:15With more money than she can spend,
00:17:18Steph's broken the habit of a lifetime
00:17:19and got a takeaway.
00:17:22More like a normal diet?
00:17:23Definitely not.
00:17:24Mm-hmm.
00:17:25Is that all right?
00:17:26Yeah, it's lovely.
00:17:28Have I got much of a mess to clean up?
00:17:30I've got to be honest,
00:17:31I'm not the cleanest.
00:17:36It's almost bedtime,
00:17:37but there's one last job.
00:17:39Each day,
00:17:40they'll record a secret diary,
00:17:42and Joe's taking no chances
00:17:44of being disturbed.
00:17:46How anybody could have £2,000 for a week
00:17:48is just madness.
00:17:51It makes me feel sick.
00:17:53How will I survive this week?
00:17:55One day at a time.
00:18:00Day two,
00:18:02and there are some fuzzy heads in Widness.
00:18:06Probably have five hours sleep.
00:18:07It took me age to fall asleep.
00:18:09Normally fall asleep really quick at home.
00:18:10Oh, my God.
00:18:15Over in Wilmslow,
00:18:17the girls are having a swim before school.
00:18:21They just couldn't wait.
00:18:27Tracy would like a dip, too,
00:18:29but the gas has run out.
00:18:32Joe, there's no hot water.
00:18:38I presume there's a gas top-up yard somewhere.
00:18:41I've never had to top up anything in my life.
00:18:44The only thing I top up is the petrol.
00:18:47It's on the fridge.
00:18:50I mean, topping up the gas,
00:18:51that's a big chunk of wasted time.
00:18:56Hiya.
00:18:59Can I do £15, please?
00:19:01How much do people normally do?
00:19:03All different?
00:19:08Thank you very much.
00:19:09See you later.
00:19:11That whole process took 20 minutes.
00:19:13Now, I don't know if she drives.
00:19:14Today, it's sunny.
00:19:15It's nice out.
00:19:16If you had to do that in the rain,
00:19:18early in the morning,
00:19:19and you're dragging two kids down the road to the shop,
00:19:21that's a daily struggle.
00:19:26Life's not going to plan in Wilmslow, either.
00:19:29Nanny Gail was determined to see the week out,
00:19:32but she's woken up feeling rotten.
00:19:35Fortunately, some friends have offered to look after her.
00:19:39It's not about how much money you have or how big your house is.
00:19:44It's about, like, family and who you have to back you up whenever you're in trouble.
00:19:51Mum said she thought she was letting me down and she was letting the girls down.
00:19:55And I will quote my daughter when Amelia said,
00:20:00you will be letting us down, Nanny, if you stay, not if you go.
00:20:07Steph's first visitor couldn't be more welcome.
00:20:10With her mum having to go home,
00:20:12she's more than happy to find Joe's mum on the doorstep.
00:20:16Hi, Sarah. Hi, are you OK?
00:20:18I'm fine. Nice to meet you.
00:20:20Nice to meet you. How are you doing?
00:20:22I'm doing all right. How are you?
00:20:23Excellent. I'm OK.
00:20:25How are you finding it?
00:20:27It's madness, isn't it?
00:20:29It's absolutely...
00:20:30Are you enjoying it, though?
00:20:31My girls love this house.
00:20:33Darcy is seven.
00:20:35Amelia's nearly 13.
00:20:37The girls are just in awe, to be honest.
00:20:39Oh, well, that's lovely.
00:20:41I'll worry about your Joe in my house,
00:20:43cos, like, it's so small and I'm thinking,
00:20:47you'll be bouncing off a wall without the space.
00:20:50No, no, no, no, no.
00:20:51I've just got, like, a three-bedroom cottage,
00:20:53so he comes and stays at mine,
00:20:55takes it over, so he'll be fine.
00:20:58Really? Honestly.
00:20:59I'll be honest, his picture over there was the first thing I've seen,
00:21:02and he just emanates, like, this kindness, like, his smile is, like...
00:21:06He just seems like a genuinely lovely person.
00:21:09You know, he really, really is.
00:21:11He's very funny, very warm and very kind.
00:21:15And do you know the story of the lady with the purple hair?
00:21:19No.
00:21:20So, that's Tracey.
00:21:22OK.
00:21:24Tracey's family...
00:21:25Yeah.
00:21:26..were good friends, and their son, Dylan,
00:21:30it was before he was 20, got cancer.
00:21:33Oh.
00:21:34And he died when he was 21.
00:21:36Oh, no.
00:21:36He was a footballer who played for West Ham.
00:21:39OK.
00:21:41And Joe was very close with Dylan, very, very close.
00:21:44That was back when Joe was a football agent and represented Dylan.
00:21:48After he passed, Tracey set up a foundation.
00:21:53When Joe was on the board of the trustees...
00:21:57Right.
00:21:57..for the charity as well.
00:21:59Yeah, that's her story.
00:22:01So they got, like, really, really close.
00:22:02But as a family, they were close.
00:22:04So, yeah, that's who it is.
00:22:08On the picture front...
00:22:09Yes.
00:22:10..I've gone into the utility room and there's some pictures on the wall.
00:22:13Right.
00:22:14I'm going to be honest, I'm a Liverpool fan.
00:22:16So I walked in.
00:22:18I was like...
00:22:19My husband...
00:22:20Joe's dad played for Man United.
00:22:22Did he follow in his dad's football?
00:22:24He did.
00:22:24He was also a goalkeeper.
00:22:26He was at West Ham.
00:22:27Oh, OK.
00:22:28And he dislocated his shoulder.
00:22:31And they actually said to him,
00:22:33if it dislocates again...
00:22:36Yeah.
00:22:36..you won't be able to play anymore.
00:22:38And it dislocated again.
00:22:40Oh, no.
00:22:41So it was awful.
00:22:45So he sort of lost his career.
00:22:48And then...
00:22:50..two weeks later, his dad died.
00:22:53Oh, don't.
00:22:54I'm going now.
00:22:56It was 24 years ago.
00:22:58Honestly, I'm not crying because of that.
00:22:59I'm crying for Joe.
00:23:01Yeah.
00:23:02Because he lost everything.
00:23:04And he was 18.
00:23:06Oh, my God.
00:23:08It just upsets me for him.
00:23:10Yeah.
00:23:10When I actually talk about it.
00:23:14I'm learning from this experience
00:23:17that you can be at any point on the wealth scale.
00:23:19You could be right at the top or right at the bottom.
00:23:21But the subject of grief and loss
00:23:24is something that links us all together.
00:23:30Steph and the girls have been trying to link clues around the house
00:23:33with Joe's life and have noticed some enticing items.
00:23:37Can I ask you a question?
00:23:39Yes.
00:23:40Where does the Mr Whippy thing come from?
00:23:42OK.
00:23:44So...
00:23:44The kids were like...
00:23:45It's Mr Whippy.
00:23:47Yeah.
00:23:48So Joe...
00:23:48His brain works all over the place.
00:23:52Actually, I think if when he was a child,
00:23:54if ADHD had been around, he had it.
00:23:57Yeah.
00:23:57He would ring me and go,
00:23:58Oh, we've just been talking about this idea.
00:24:00What do you think?
00:24:01I'll go, stop ringing me with ideas for...
00:24:03Yeah.
00:24:04...businesses or whatever.
00:24:05So a friend of Joe's owned the trademark for Mr Whippy.
00:24:10Right, OK.
00:24:11This is Joe and ideas again.
00:24:13Right.
00:24:14Why don't we make Mr Whippy cupcakes?
00:24:18Which they then did,
00:24:19and he's the one who goes out to all the shops,
00:24:23all the head offices.
00:24:24Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:24:24And he's put them in quite a lot of stores.
00:24:27So he's took an existing and just expanded it out
00:24:29into a whole new market?
00:24:31Yeah.
00:24:31Really?
00:24:32Yeah.
00:24:33There's no stopping him, is there?
00:24:34Yeah.
00:24:35So something else about Joe,
00:24:37what he loves to do and still does love to do,
00:24:40is sing.
00:24:41Singing?
00:24:42Yeah.
00:24:43Nobody else enjoys it.
00:24:45Right, OK.
00:24:46It does remind me a bit of what I'm going through
00:24:48with Amelia at the minute.
00:24:49So Amelia loves singing.
00:24:50She loves musicals.
00:24:51Yeah, yes.
00:24:52There's certain things she can sing,
00:24:54I'm not going to lie,
00:24:54and there's a whole lot of things she can't.
00:24:57And the whole lot of things that she can't,
00:24:59she feels that if the louder she gets,
00:25:02the better she'll get.
00:25:03When they meet,
00:25:04they could do a little duet.
00:25:05Brilliant.
00:25:06Brilliant.
00:25:08Next,
00:25:09living on a budget
00:25:10makes even simple things hard.
00:25:14It's stressful
00:25:15and it's a rush.
00:25:18Saleswoman Steph
00:25:19tries her hand at being Mrs. Whippy.
00:25:21Take the pen,
00:25:23get him to sign there and then...
00:25:24Imagine.
00:25:25No pressure.
00:25:26Joe lives off the pressure.
00:25:35Millionaire businessman Joe
00:25:37and his friend Tracy
00:25:38are having trouble settling in.
00:25:40Probably a five-hour sleep.
00:25:43Joe,
00:25:44there's no hot water.
00:25:46Steph's living the rich life,
00:25:48but also has a problem.
00:25:50Her mum's ill
00:25:51and she has had to leave.
00:25:53And I will quote my daughter,
00:25:56you will be letting us down,
00:25:57Nanny,
00:25:57if you stay,
00:25:58not if you go.
00:26:02Day three.
00:26:04And Steph's relieved
00:26:06that her mum's feeling better.
00:26:08She's got a support network.
00:26:10It takes, like,
00:26:11the pressure off me
00:26:12because I know
00:26:13she's got all that help there.
00:26:14I think it's going to help me
00:26:16relax and enjoy it more
00:26:18as an experience
00:26:19because I've not got
00:26:20that massive worry going on.
00:26:24At the house in Widness,
00:26:26Joe's found something
00:26:27that worries him.
00:26:30Yeah.
00:26:33So she's got debt
00:26:34of £15,238
00:26:36on short-term loans.
00:26:39She's paying £210 a month.
00:26:41Now, where do you find
00:26:43that sort of money
00:26:43to clear that sort of...
00:26:47Well, there's two questions.
00:26:48It's a head-on-one.
00:26:49What and why you've been taking it?
00:26:52What's the reason for it?
00:26:53Yeah.
00:26:55We need to have
00:26:56a bit more of an understanding
00:26:56of, you know,
00:26:57state of affairs
00:26:58across the life.
00:27:01With perfect timing,
00:27:03Steph's best friend Fiona
00:27:04calls by
00:27:05to check on the newcomers.
00:27:07She'll be able to tell them
00:27:08anything they need to know.
00:27:10Nice to meet you.
00:27:11Nice to meet you, too.
00:27:11I bet you know this house
00:27:12better than me.
00:27:12I do.
00:27:15So I met Steph
00:27:16in a work capacity.
00:27:17She was a recruitment consultant
00:27:19and I was looking for
00:27:21a job after being
00:27:22made redundant.
00:27:23So she signed me on
00:27:24with the agency
00:27:25that she worked for
00:27:26at the time.
00:27:27So what does Steph do
00:27:28for a living now, then?
00:27:29Steph sells holidays
00:27:30for a living now.
00:27:31So she works from home.
00:27:33Seems to enjoy it.
00:27:34She has a good
00:27:35set-up here.
00:27:36OK.
00:27:37It's hard to work
00:27:37in the same place you live.
00:27:38I find it hard
00:27:39to work at home.
00:27:40Yes.
00:27:40Not everyone does,
00:27:41but I do find that difficult.
00:27:43What she does is
00:27:44she helps the kids
00:27:45come home from school.
00:27:46She'll do their tea, etc.
00:27:48Then, obviously,
00:27:49they'll have their
00:27:50quality time.
00:27:51When the kids go to bed,
00:27:52she'll carry on work.
00:27:54How many hours a day
00:27:55does she do?
00:27:55About 12 hours a day.
00:27:57I believe it's
00:27:58around about minimum wage
00:27:59that she's on.
00:28:01Given the distractions
00:28:03at home,
00:28:04Jo's got a lot of respect
00:28:05for Steph as a sales agent.
00:28:07It's extremely difficult
00:28:08to survive,
00:28:11especially in that industry
00:28:12she's working in
00:28:13because it's seasonal.
00:28:15So you'll have good months
00:28:16and a bad month.
00:28:17So I come across
00:28:18some paperwork
00:28:18that shows her some debt.
00:28:21Can you tell me a bit about it?
00:28:22How did she get into it?
00:28:24Steph went through divorce
00:28:25over the last couple of years.
00:28:27She's then gone
00:28:28from a two-income family
00:28:30to a one-income family.
00:28:32That's a terrible situation.
00:28:33to be in us.
00:28:34That's real, isn't it?
00:28:35Because she's not just
00:28:36fending for herself,
00:28:37she's fending for two little girls.
00:28:40Having been a busy mum
00:28:41with kids,
00:28:42Tracy's full of admiration
00:28:43for Steph.
00:28:45The current high cost of living,
00:28:47I can't imagine
00:28:48how she juggles
00:28:49all the responsibilities
00:28:50and makes ends meet.
00:28:54Over in Wilmslow,
00:28:55saleswoman Steph
00:28:56is visiting Jo's workplace,
00:28:58the head office
00:28:59of MJP Whippy.
00:29:02She doesn't know it,
00:29:03but she's going to be offered
00:29:05what could be
00:29:05the biggest break
00:29:06of her entire career.
00:29:08Come and have a seat.
00:29:09She's meeting Michael,
00:29:12Jo's business partner,
00:29:13and Jemima,
00:29:14the company's head of production.
00:29:18So, I had the Mr. Whippy brand.
00:29:20Yeah.
00:29:21And Jo partly owned
00:29:24a cupcake factory.
00:29:25So Jo said,
00:29:26why don't we do cupcakes?
00:29:28Put the Mr. Whippy heritage
00:29:29onto a cupcake.
00:29:31You know,
00:29:31the raspberry toppings,
00:29:32100,000 sprinkles.
00:29:34Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:29:35Jo came on board.
00:29:36So, we launched
00:29:38the cupcakes,
00:29:39very successful,
00:29:40and in the first
00:29:41four to five months,
00:29:43we sold 1.5 million cupcakes.
00:29:45How many?
00:29:47Yeah.
00:29:47Sorry.
00:29:48Yeah, 1.5 million cupcakes.
00:29:49One and a half million cupcakes.
00:29:51Yeah, just on launch.
00:29:53So, we just elaborated on that.
00:29:55Yeah.
00:29:55We've got loads of things
00:29:56happening this year.
00:29:57Jo and Michael
00:29:58are developing
00:29:59a range of doughnuts.
00:30:01But it's a long way
00:30:02from product idea
00:30:03to shopping basket.
00:30:05They're hoping
00:30:06Steph could offer
00:30:07some useful ideas.
00:30:10Right, so grab the doughnut.
00:30:12Steph's perfectly placed
00:30:14to create a product
00:30:15for a busy mum
00:30:16who needs to watch the pennies.
00:30:18No, I'm a bit mad.
00:30:19Steph, that's a good effort.
00:30:21It's a totally new concept.
00:30:23A doughnut
00:30:24that could be cut in half
00:30:25to please two kids.
00:30:28I like your creation there.
00:30:29That's good.
00:30:30Thanks.
00:30:30Really good.
00:30:31Could be the bestseller.
00:30:32So, I think you've done great today.
00:30:34Once we'd done
00:30:35some sampling,
00:30:36tasting,
00:30:37testing,
00:30:38we'd go to a retailer
00:30:40to pitch
00:30:42the product.
00:30:43Right.
00:30:44Joe would normally
00:30:45do the pitch,
00:30:46but now he knows
00:30:47Steph's a good saleswoman.
00:30:49He's persuaded Michael
00:30:50to send her
00:30:51in his place.
00:30:53There's one retailer
00:30:54which I believe
00:30:57want to test
00:30:58a few different versions
00:30:59and why don't we send you
00:31:01as our representative.
00:31:04How do you feel about that?
00:31:06Put on the spot.
00:31:09Through a retailer?
00:31:11Yeah.
00:31:12If she can land the company
00:31:13a real-life contract,
00:31:14it will prove she's got
00:31:16what it takes in sales.
00:31:18It could even be
00:31:19the sliding door.
00:31:22Take the pen,
00:31:23get him to sign there
00:31:24and then...
00:31:25Imagine.
00:31:26No pressure.
00:31:29Joe lives
00:31:29off the pressure.
00:31:33On the way home,
00:31:35Steph calmed her nerves
00:31:36with some shopping therapy.
00:31:38Darcy,
00:31:39can you come and sit down
00:31:41for a minute?
00:31:42Nothing for herself,
00:31:43of course,
00:31:44but expensive gifts
00:31:45for the girls.
00:31:48You open yours first,
00:31:50students.
00:31:51What is it?
00:31:52What is it?
00:31:53A phone.
00:31:54An iPhone for Darcy
00:31:56and there's expensive technology
00:31:58for Amelia too.
00:32:02I spent £465.
00:32:08And that was before
00:32:09the brand-new dresses.
00:32:11That's sad.
00:32:13I'm dead.
00:32:14I'm that excited.
00:32:16She's dead.
00:32:16She's that excited.
00:32:17Yeah.
00:32:22Joe and Tracy
00:32:23are learning
00:32:24that every day for Steph
00:32:25is a round of jobs.
00:32:27This afternoon,
00:32:29they're tidying
00:32:30Nana Gail's garden.
00:32:31Always a bit of a nightmare
00:32:33for Steph.
00:32:34There's a lot of leaves around.
00:32:39I hate gardening.
00:32:41I've always hated gardening.
00:32:43I remember doing it
00:32:44a bit with my mum
00:32:45when I was a kid
00:32:45and I hated it then.
00:32:48Having money
00:32:48has separated
00:32:49both Joe and Tracy
00:32:51from the daily grind of life.
00:32:53Today
00:32:53isn't going to be easy for them.
00:32:56I found it like
00:32:57taking up time
00:32:59that
00:32:59I would like to
00:33:01spend elsewhere
00:33:02so it made me realise
00:33:04that Stephanie
00:33:04doesn't have the luxury
00:33:05to do that.
00:33:12Oh, my God.
00:33:14That is my day in a tea.
00:33:22With £2,000
00:33:23spending money this week,
00:33:25Steph's got plenty left
00:33:27and can't stop herself
00:33:28spoiling the girls.
00:33:29We can always make it
00:33:30bigger or smaller
00:33:31if we need it.
00:33:32It's special for the girls
00:33:33to go horse riding
00:33:34because Amelia
00:33:35did do horse riding
00:33:36and absolutely loved it.
00:33:38Good girl.
00:33:40Relax.
00:33:40Well done.
00:33:41Oh, my gosh.
00:33:42You are a pro.
00:33:43Amelia's riding lessons
00:33:45stopped when Steph
00:33:46could no longer afford them.
00:33:47You're doing so well.
00:33:48Come on.
00:33:49£35 for a half an hour
00:33:51was just not possible.
00:33:52Keep going.
00:33:53It's never nice
00:33:54to tell your child
00:33:54she can't do something.
00:33:58Well done.
00:34:00You're doing amazing.
00:34:01Oh, thank you.
00:34:02She's doing so well.
00:34:04Look at the smile on her face.
00:34:05You can't not think
00:34:07she's enjoying as well.
00:34:08Can you?
00:34:09I feel like you should
00:34:10get her off more often
00:34:12over here this side
00:34:13to let her ride.
00:34:14Do you know what?
00:34:15I'd love to.
00:34:17I have a daughter.
00:34:18She's four
00:34:18and she doesn't ride
00:34:19that pony enough, so
00:34:21more than happy
00:34:21to have you over here
00:34:23to get some lessons.
00:34:24Yeah, I'd love that.
00:34:25Yeah, she has her outfit
00:34:26ready now as well,
00:34:27so I feel like...
00:34:28Absolutely.
00:34:28It would be a crime
00:34:30not to get you back
00:34:31on that horse,
00:34:32wouldn't it?
00:34:33Come on.
00:34:33Don't cry.
00:34:34I'm not going to have you
00:34:35crying on a pony.
00:34:35Come on.
00:34:37Come on.
00:34:41Joe and Tracy
00:34:42are realising
00:34:43that in Steph's life
00:34:45downtime doesn't exist.
00:34:47Their next task
00:34:48is a budget shop.
00:34:50But how much
00:34:51should they spend?
00:34:53Maybe £25 to £30.
00:34:55I imagine Steph
00:34:56runs in the supermarket.
00:34:58She's got a short amount
00:34:58of time kids are in the car
00:34:59back at.
00:35:00You know, when I go shopping
00:35:01I don't think about time.
00:35:02I quite enjoy walking
00:35:03around the supermarket.
00:35:04I'll write you
00:35:05a shopping list.
00:35:05and then I'll time you
00:35:08outside of the shops
00:35:09and see how you go.
00:35:13Joe's in for a shock.
00:35:15Tracy reckons
00:35:16busy mum, Steph,
00:35:17would allow herself
00:35:17around 15 minutes.
00:35:22There's nothing in life
00:35:23I enjoy only doing
00:35:25for 15 minutes.
00:35:26She wants a tangerine
00:35:27for the orange and the chain,
00:35:29but she's having it on.
00:35:31watching the budget.
00:35:32Watching the budget
00:35:32doesn't come easy
00:35:33for a man who wouldn't blink
00:35:34at spending hundreds
00:35:36on his weekly shop.
00:35:37It's stressful,
00:35:38it's short,
00:35:39it's sharp,
00:35:40and it's a rush.
00:35:42Well, Greg.
00:35:44Can he make the right choices?
00:35:47I'm going to get two of the everyday bits
00:35:49instead of one of the expensive ones.
00:35:52four pound, four pound, four pound,
00:35:54two pound and 85.
00:35:58Oh, but no coffee.
00:36:01Oh, love.
00:36:02I can't use it.
00:36:03I've only got cash.
00:36:0924 quid.
00:36:1024, 90 quid.
00:36:11Oh, there you go.
00:36:16Sorry, Joe, you missed it.
00:36:18I've got to the till
00:36:19with time to spare,
00:36:20but then,
00:36:20because I went to the self-checkout
00:36:23and that was card only,
00:36:23I had to come back out
00:36:24and someone got in front of me
00:36:25with a massive trolley.
00:36:30Back at the house,
00:36:32Joe faces another
00:36:33of Steph's tasks,
00:36:34batch cooking for the week.
00:36:37When my dad died,
00:36:39my mum did everything for me.
00:36:42And then my mum got ill
00:36:43about a year and a half
00:36:46after she got cancer.
00:36:49And she was too ill to cook for me.
00:36:51And I used to watch the cooking channel
00:36:55and I learnt to cook like that
00:36:56when I needed to cook
00:36:58for myself and for my brother.
00:37:01Cooking brings back memories
00:37:02of hard times
00:37:03and the gap
00:37:04that his dad's passing created.
00:37:09Like, the biggest thing for me
00:37:10is that my dad
00:37:11will never meet my family.
00:37:16But life's not perfect.
00:37:19Not even for me.
00:37:27No, I mean, I'd give everything I've got
00:37:30to have another day with my dad.
00:37:41Here you go, Trace.
00:37:42Oh, thank you.
00:37:43Some stew.
00:37:43It looks lovely.
00:37:45No, it'll definitely be hearty
00:37:47and fill you up as my nan's recipe.
00:37:51Steph's working a self-employed,
00:37:53commission-based job from home
00:37:55with two kids,
00:37:57helping looking after a mum,
00:38:00doing the gardening,
00:38:02doing the food shop,
00:38:03getting gas and doing everything else.
00:38:05It's...
00:38:07It's a lot harder than my life.
00:38:10Coming up,
00:38:12Steph's future is on the line
00:38:14when she makes a crucial sales pitch.
00:38:17I was so nervous.
00:38:18I was shaking from head to toe.
00:38:21Get going.
00:38:22Joe plucks up courage
00:38:23and struts his stuff.
00:38:27I've done some things in my time,
00:38:29but that's up there.
00:38:37For single mum's Steph,
00:38:39everything's riding
00:38:40on what could be
00:38:41her sliding doors moment,
00:38:42the big sales pitch.
00:38:44And why don't we send you
00:38:45as our representative?
00:38:46How do you feel about that?
00:38:49For honest part, um...
00:38:52Joe and Tracey are shocked
00:38:54at the situation
00:38:55Steph's got herself trapped in.
00:38:58What do you know?
00:38:59So she's got a debt of £15,238.
00:39:06Day four,
00:39:07and the clock's ticking for Steph.
00:39:09Later today,
00:39:10she's doing her big sales pitch
00:39:12for Joe's Donuts,
00:39:13so she's investing a few hundred quid
00:39:15on a visit to a posh hair salon.
00:39:18Good morning.
00:39:19Good morning.
00:39:20I'm good, how are you?
00:39:22Celebrity stylist Michael Blahn
00:39:24is an old friend of Joe's.
00:39:26I'm going to apologise in advance.
00:39:27I'm excited and nervous,
00:39:29feeling like maybe, just maybe,
00:39:32like I might come out
00:39:33feeling like a bit of a different person.
00:39:36So, yeah, what we're going to do,
00:39:37we're going to take this off.
00:39:38Yeah.
00:39:39Do the hair colour first.
00:39:41Yeah.
00:39:41And then we fit the extension for you.
00:39:43OK.
00:39:44The icing on the cake
00:39:45is that her mum rang
00:39:46to say she's feeling better,
00:39:47so Steph's invited her along
00:39:49for a makeover too.
00:39:51Super, super, super excited
00:39:53to see her.
00:39:55And I'm not even sorry for crying.
00:39:59So why you choose to be cherry brown, then?
00:40:02I thought, I'm doing this crazy experience,
00:40:05I'm going bold and brave,
00:40:07and it's just thought, you know,
00:40:09why not reflect that?
00:40:12Gail's on her way.
00:40:14Even though mum's not well enough
00:40:16to rejoin me full-time for the week,
00:40:19it was a be-all and end-all
00:40:21that I had to have my mum
00:40:22come into the salon.
00:40:23She had to be spoilt.
00:40:25I'm thinking one of this chocolate colour.
00:40:27Oh, he's lovely.
00:40:28He's lovely.
00:40:29The one thing I've always wanted to do
00:40:31for my mum,
00:40:32cos she's always there for me,
00:40:33is get her preened and pampered.
00:40:40What's giving Gail most pleasure
00:40:43is seeing Steph's transformation.
00:40:45She used to get her hair done nice,
00:40:48but, erm, no, not anymore.
00:40:51Not anymore.
00:40:53She doesn't treat herself
00:40:55because she doesn't have the money,
00:40:58and what money she has
00:41:00is for the girls.
00:41:03She always looks lovely,
00:41:05don't get me wrong, she does.
00:41:06But, no, she's very selfless
00:41:09in that respect about herself,
00:41:12very much so.
00:41:14You just look like
00:41:16you're getting your spark back.
00:41:18You like it, yeah?
00:41:19I love it.
00:41:20Thank you so much.
00:41:22The bill is just over £600.
00:41:25Ooh, I'm so excited!
00:41:27And with all the treats
00:41:29she's bought for the girls,
00:41:30her £2,000 spending money
00:41:32for the week
00:41:33has now dwindled
00:41:34to under £500.
00:41:38In Widness,
00:41:40the sun's out.
00:41:41Jo and Tracey
00:41:42have headed to the park
00:41:44to meet Nana Gail's
00:41:45oldest friend, Pauline.
00:41:47I've known them
00:41:48for a long time
00:41:49since they moved in
00:41:51opposite me.
00:41:52It probably is about
00:41:5325 to 30 years.
00:41:55So what are they like
00:41:56as a family?
00:41:57They're very close
00:41:58as a family
00:41:59and they've had
00:42:01quite a tough life, actually.
00:42:03They've had
00:42:04a number of deaths
00:42:05in the family.
00:42:06So they had,
00:42:07first of all,
00:42:08Steph's sibling,
00:42:09Stevie,
00:42:09he had a lot of disabilities
00:42:11and he died
00:42:13quite early
00:42:13when he was only
00:42:14about 14, 15,
00:42:15I think.
00:42:16And then
00:42:17Steph's sister,
00:42:18Louise,
00:42:19died of cancer.
00:42:20How has that affected
00:42:21Steph and Gail?
00:42:23Massively.
00:42:24As you can imagine,
00:42:26losing a sibling
00:42:27and a daughter
00:42:27is a really big thing
00:42:29in somebody's life.
00:42:31It's been very difficult.
00:42:33To hear what Steph and Gail
00:42:35have both gone through
00:42:36in their life
00:42:37really resonated with me
00:42:39and that's the strength
00:42:40of a mother.
00:42:43Gail's not been too well
00:42:46recently,
00:42:47so Steph's spent
00:42:48quite a bit of time
00:42:49helping her
00:42:50around the house,
00:42:51cleaning,
00:42:52gardening,
00:42:53that sort of thing.
00:42:54I think Steph's coming
00:42:55across like she's,
00:42:56you know,
00:42:57got a heart.
00:42:57She cares for her family,
00:42:59cares for her mum.
00:43:00And she's putting them
00:43:01all first.
00:43:02Where does she fit
00:43:03time in for Steph?
00:43:05The more Joe learns
00:43:07about Steph's life
00:43:08and the grief
00:43:09and loss she's experienced,
00:43:10the more he admires her.
00:43:12He wants to arrange
00:43:13an extra special treat
00:43:14for the family.
00:43:15His mum's met Steph,
00:43:17so he rings her
00:43:18for advice.
00:43:20Do they get to go out
00:43:21as a family?
00:43:22You know,
00:43:22Steph's going to go out.
00:43:23I said to her,
00:43:24did she ever go out
00:43:24even with her girlfriend?
00:43:26And she doesn't.
00:43:28Steph mentioned
00:43:29that the girls love
00:43:30dancing and
00:43:31like musicals.
00:43:32OK.
00:43:33So I think a nice night
00:43:34at the theatre
00:43:35or something
00:43:37would just be
00:43:37a really, really
00:43:39appreciated
00:43:41treat for them
00:43:42and a really nice thing
00:43:43for you
00:43:44to give them.
00:43:49Back at the house,
00:43:50the countdown
00:43:51for Steph's pitch meeting
00:43:52continues.
00:43:54I've done research
00:43:56as any salesperson
00:43:57does do.
00:43:58I've got the facts
00:43:59I need,
00:43:59I've got the personality
00:44:00so I'll just put the two
00:44:01together and see how we go.
00:44:05Do you think
00:44:06I'm going to do good?
00:44:07Yeah.
00:44:07Yeah,
00:44:08why do you think
00:44:08I'm going to do good?
00:44:09Because,
00:44:10because,
00:44:10because you
00:44:11brought me in.
00:44:13Thank you,
00:44:13baby.
00:44:16I feel
00:44:16extremely nervous.
00:44:18A little bit sick.
00:44:29The big moments arrived.
00:44:31Steph's minutes away
00:44:32from representing
00:44:33MJP Whippy
00:44:35at a crucial meeting
00:44:36with Casper's,
00:44:37the fastest growing
00:44:38dessert chain
00:44:39in the UK.
00:44:40I was so nervous,
00:44:41I was shaking
00:44:42from head to toe.
00:44:44As she enters
00:44:45the Dragon's Den,
00:44:46the stakes are high.
00:44:48Nice to meet you.
00:44:49She's pitching
00:44:50the new donut range
00:44:51to some powerful players,
00:44:53including Francesco,
00:44:55the group managing director.
00:44:58So,
00:44:59first of all,
00:45:00thank you all so much
00:45:01for taking time
00:45:02out of your day.
00:45:02Obviously,
00:45:03Mr Whippy,
00:45:04iconic brand.
00:45:05You know,
00:45:06it's that ice cream
00:45:06in the park,
00:45:07it's the flake,
00:45:09it's the hundreds
00:45:09and thousands
00:45:10of your sherbets
00:45:11and your raspberries.
00:45:12So we branched out
00:45:13into cupcakes
00:45:14just over a year ago.
00:45:16And people were looking
00:45:17at them and recognising
00:45:18straight away
00:45:19like,
00:45:19this looks like
00:45:21a 99er
00:45:22or this looks like,
00:45:23you know,
00:45:23an ice cream we had.
00:45:24The demand was massive.
00:45:26So,
00:45:27branched out
00:45:28into doughnuts,
00:45:29wherever they evolve,
00:45:31it's keeping
00:45:32that cone ice cream
00:45:34look,
00:45:34that comfort feel.
00:45:36So this is
00:45:37our bubble gum.
00:45:39and then is your raspberry
00:45:43ones.
00:45:44Again,
00:45:44sticking with the
00:45:45absolute eye-catching
00:45:46design of an ice cream
00:45:47makes me want to go
00:45:48to a park,
00:45:49especially with it
00:45:49being sunny.
00:45:50Yeah.
00:45:52How did you pick up
00:45:53these two flavours?
00:45:55We've tried to just
00:45:56stay with the typical
00:45:57classic ice cream flavours
00:45:59and that's kind of
00:46:00where we brought
00:46:01the bubble gum
00:46:01into the doughnuts.
00:46:03Yeah.
00:46:03And that's very true.
00:46:04We sell quite a lot
00:46:06of bubble gum ice cream
00:46:07so we know that
00:46:09it's a common trend
00:46:11and very good.
00:46:12Not to put you on the spot
00:46:13after I've given you
00:46:14a bit of sugar,
00:46:15nothing like softening you up
00:46:16but I mean,
00:46:16would this be something
00:46:17that you guys would
00:46:18potentially be
00:46:20interested in?
00:46:21Yeah,
00:46:22I will tell you
00:46:23this is a very
00:46:24interesting product
00:46:25and I've got a feeling
00:46:26that this appeals
00:46:27to all generations
00:46:28in a way.
00:46:29If I was out
00:46:30with my granddad
00:46:31and then also
00:46:32with my seven-year-old
00:46:33it would appeal
00:46:34to all three of us
00:46:35which I think
00:46:35is a massive
00:46:36selling point.
00:46:38Exactly.
00:46:38So I think it can go
00:46:39also with some
00:46:40of the other offerings
00:46:41we have,
00:46:42drinks or milkshakes
00:46:43and particularly coffee
00:46:46for us to match
00:46:47a product with a drink
00:46:50is what we're all about.
00:46:51Brilliant.
00:46:52Well,
00:46:53I would like to
00:46:53thank you so much.
00:46:54Obviously,
00:46:54we'll stay in contact
00:46:56regarding launch date
00:46:57and numbers
00:46:57and things like that
00:46:58but I'm glad
00:47:00to have met you all.
00:47:01Thank you so much.
00:47:02It was a pleasure
00:47:02to meet you.
00:47:03And you.
00:47:04All take care.
00:47:05Take care.
00:47:05Bye now.
00:47:06Has Steph pulled off
00:47:07the impossible
00:47:08and done a deal
00:47:09that could change
00:47:10her life forever.
00:47:12I've always lived
00:47:13in a bubble
00:47:13that's safe and secure
00:47:14and familiar
00:47:15and I'm maybe learning
00:47:16that I don't always
00:47:18have to play it safe
00:47:18and stay in that bubble
00:47:20I can come out of it
00:47:21and just try something new
00:47:22like I've just done
00:47:24in there now.
00:47:28Having learned
00:47:28that Steph's girls
00:47:29are mad about dancing,
00:47:31Joe and Tracy
00:47:32have come to a local
00:47:33Morris dancing club
00:47:34to find out
00:47:35why they love it
00:47:36so much.
00:47:39They're meeting
00:47:40dance trainer
00:47:41Shell.
00:47:46Well, it was
00:47:47Morris dancing
00:47:47coming back round
00:47:48because it was around
00:47:48when I was a kid
00:47:49and I just thought
00:47:50that no one did it
00:47:51anymore.
00:47:52Are you thinking
00:47:53of the men with sticks
00:47:54kind of Morris dancing?
00:47:55Yeah, that's still
00:47:55in existence
00:47:56but this is a different
00:47:57form.
00:47:58So this form
00:47:59of Morris dancing
00:48:00came to fruition
00:48:01in the war
00:48:02when there was no men
00:48:03and so the ladies
00:48:04took it over
00:48:05as a hobby
00:48:05and it's evolved.
00:48:08So I see that
00:48:09Amelia and Darcy
00:48:09have a lot of medals
00:48:10and how much dedication
00:48:11does it take
00:48:11to become that good
00:48:12at Morris dancing?
00:48:13They will have
00:48:14maybe one or two
00:48:15practice nights
00:48:16and also there's
00:48:17the competitions
00:48:17on a Sunday.
00:48:20It does take
00:48:21a lot of dedication
00:48:22and a lot of commitment.
00:48:25In the middle of...
00:48:26In here?
00:48:26In there.
00:48:27Have I got a coffee?
00:48:28Get going.
00:48:29Come on then.
00:48:35I've done some
00:48:36things in my time
00:48:37but that's up there.
00:48:42Seeing everyone
00:48:43have such a great time
00:48:44has given Joe
00:48:45an idea for his
00:48:46special treat.
00:48:47He's going to arrange
00:48:48a day of dancing
00:48:49for Steph's girls
00:48:50like they've never
00:48:51had before.
00:48:52Well done.
00:48:53Well done.
00:48:57Coming up
00:48:58Joe sets his plan
00:49:00in motion.
00:49:01Your pink limo awaits.
00:49:03Shut the front door.
00:49:07But as each day
00:49:08passes in witness
00:49:10living on the poverty line
00:49:11gets steadily more wearing.
00:49:14Every decision
00:49:15every thought you make
00:49:16all reverts back to
00:49:17have you got enough money?
00:49:25Steph's sales skills
00:49:26have been put
00:49:27to the test.
00:49:28It's keeping that
00:49:29tone ice cream look
00:49:30that comfort feel.
00:49:32But will she
00:49:33clinch the contract?
00:49:34I've always lived
00:49:35in a bubble.
00:49:35Maybe I can come out
00:49:37of it and just try
00:49:37something new like
00:49:38I've just done in there now.
00:49:41Living a week
00:49:42of Steph's life
00:49:44Joe's realising
00:49:45that she's gradually
00:49:46being ground down.
00:49:47I said to her
00:49:48did she ever go out
00:49:49even with her girlfriend?
00:49:50And she doesn't.
00:49:54Day five
00:49:55when Joe and Tracy
00:49:56first arrived
00:49:57they noticed
00:49:58that the girls' bedrooms
00:49:59were looking a bit sad.
00:50:04The decorators
00:50:05are in
00:50:06and they're going
00:50:06to make Darcy's room
00:50:08fit for a princess.
00:50:13Amelia's will be converted
00:50:14into a teenager's pad.
00:50:17Sometimes in life
00:50:18you need a little bit
00:50:19of help.
00:50:20Doing the house
00:50:21up a little bit
00:50:21just freshening it up
00:50:22and helping the kids
00:50:23have better rooms
00:50:24will take a little bit
00:50:25of stress off step.
00:50:26And I want her
00:50:27to feel good.
00:50:29Mum, Dad!
00:50:30In Wilmslow
00:50:31a mystery envelope
00:50:33appeared.
00:50:34Promise.
00:50:35A little birdie
00:50:37told us that
00:50:37you love to sing
00:50:38dance and spend
00:50:39your evening
00:50:39watching musicals
00:50:40so we're treating you
00:50:42to a chance
00:50:43to show off
00:50:43your moves
00:50:44in a dance lesson
00:50:45with a world-class
00:50:47professional.
00:50:48Joe's surprise treat
00:50:50gets even better.
00:50:51As well as
00:50:52a dance lesson
00:50:53they'll also be
00:50:54travelling by limo
00:50:55to a musical
00:50:56at Manchester's
00:50:57Lowry Theatre.
00:50:58Your pink limo
00:50:59awaits
00:51:00Joe and Tracy.
00:51:00Shut the front door!
00:51:07Are you OK?
00:51:08Yeah.
00:51:09Are you all right?
00:51:11That's like your dream,
00:51:12innit?
00:51:18In the dance world
00:51:19Cadman School of Dance
00:51:21is hallowed turf
00:51:22and the home
00:51:24of champions.
00:51:26It's very different
00:51:27from classes
00:51:28at the local
00:51:28Morris Dancing Hall.
00:51:34The girls love dancing
00:51:36probably more
00:51:37than they love breathing
00:51:38every minute
00:51:39of every day
00:51:39in every room
00:51:40on the stairs
00:51:41walking to school
00:51:42brushing their teeth
00:51:43getting dressed.
00:51:44They are dancing.
00:51:46Cut them in half
00:51:47and you would just
00:51:47see the word dance.
00:51:57Watching the girls
00:51:58dance
00:51:59was a bit scary
00:52:00because
00:52:01it's very different
00:52:03to what I usually
00:52:04do for dance.
00:52:05One, two, three.
00:52:07Cha-cha-cha.
00:52:08One.
00:52:09Cha-cha-cha.
00:52:10Despite Amelia's fears,
00:52:12both girls are naturals.
00:52:13Through the middle.
00:52:14Yes.
00:52:14Cha-cha-cha.
00:52:15Through the middle.
00:52:16Good.
00:52:17Cha-cha-cha.
00:52:18Through the middle.
00:52:19Then big solo spin.
00:52:20Spin.
00:52:20Super spin.
00:52:21Cha-cha.
00:52:22Yeah, you did it!
00:52:24Very good.
00:52:27See?
00:52:27What was I so worried about?
00:52:34Joe and Tracy are having
00:52:36a well-earned coffee break.
00:52:38Living Steph's life
00:52:39for a few days
00:52:40has worn them out.
00:52:42I don't know.
00:52:42It's like I've got
00:52:42a consistent ache
00:52:43in my brain.
00:52:45I mean,
00:52:46because you're thinking
00:52:47about the house,
00:52:50mess,
00:52:51washing up,
00:52:52clothes,
00:52:53nowhere to put anything.
00:52:54I mean,
00:52:55every decision,
00:52:56every thought you make,
00:52:57everything you eat,
00:52:59whether you have,
00:53:00whether you can have
00:53:01five eggs or three,
00:53:01or you can have toast,
00:53:03or three pieces of toast,
00:53:04all reverts back to
00:53:06have you got enough money?
00:53:07We do have a better
00:53:08understanding of,
00:53:10you know,
00:53:10just how hard it can be.
00:53:12But I'd take my hat off
00:53:13to Steph
00:53:13if she puts her head
00:53:14on the pillow every night
00:53:15and gets eight hours sleep
00:53:16and goes again
00:53:17the next day,
00:53:19because...
00:53:19It's Groundhog Day,
00:53:20isn't it?
00:53:21Yeah,
00:53:21it's his Groundhog Day.
00:53:24Life in the rich house
00:53:25couldn't be more different.
00:53:32What's that?
00:53:33Steph and the girls
00:53:34are off to the theatre
00:53:35for the night of their lives.
00:53:37Come on then,
00:53:38let's go.
00:53:40You've never been
00:53:41in a limo in the lives.
00:53:43Right,
00:53:43can you get in, baby?
00:53:46Oh my goodness!
00:53:48Look at this!
00:53:50For one to ten,
00:53:52how excited you are,
00:53:53what number is it?
00:53:55Ten.
00:53:55Ten?
00:53:56No,
00:53:56I mean a hundred million,
00:53:58trillion, zillion.
00:54:02This whole week
00:54:03has been amazing
00:54:04and it's been brilliant
00:54:04but it's been busy
00:54:05and it's been hectic
00:54:06and it's been like
00:54:07going here and there
00:54:08and meeting everybody
00:54:08and this is the first time
00:54:10I've felt de-stressed
00:54:11the entire week.
00:54:12I've been able
00:54:13to just let loose
00:54:14with my kids.
00:54:17Jo's managed to get tickets
00:54:19to a very special
00:54:20theatre experience.
00:54:22Straight from taking
00:54:23London's West End
00:54:24by storm,
00:54:25it's the hit musical version
00:54:27of Pride and Prejudice.
00:54:28For me,
00:54:29it feels amazing
00:54:30to be like
00:54:31not sat on our sofa
00:54:32with cuddly blankets
00:54:33on a Friday night
00:54:34watching a musical
00:54:35but we're actually
00:54:36going into a theatre
00:54:36to watch one
00:54:37which we spoke about
00:54:38loads but never done.
00:54:42I think these two
00:54:43are going to be overwhelmed
00:54:44by the whole stage
00:54:45and lights
00:54:45and live performances
00:54:47and just honestly
00:54:48to watch their faces
00:54:49is going to be fantastic.
00:54:51I feel like
00:54:53we'll grow up
00:54:54and remember this
00:54:55and be like
00:54:56wow,
00:54:58this is crazy.
00:55:00It's like
00:55:01unforgettable.
00:55:03Let's start
00:55:05so we're going to go
00:55:06bye.
00:55:12day six
00:55:13and Joe's house
00:55:15renovations
00:55:15are moving fast.
00:55:17This morning
00:55:18there's a truckload
00:55:19of new furniture
00:55:20to get assembled.
00:55:21Two bunk beds,
00:55:23big wardrobes as well.
00:55:24Two new mattresses,
00:55:26nice and comfy.
00:55:27Really appreciate it.
00:55:28That's what we're here for.
00:55:29Really appreciate it.
00:55:29They're heavy, they are.
00:55:30They are heavy.
00:55:31It's always nice
00:55:32when you can have
00:55:33new things
00:55:34and freshen things up
00:55:35so, you know,
00:55:36we're hoping that
00:55:37we haven't
00:55:38trodden on
00:55:39Steph's toes too much.
00:55:41Oh, Jay-Z,
00:55:43make me look like that.
00:55:44I'm too old for this.
00:55:45I wish I could do more
00:55:46but I've done the most
00:55:47we can do
00:55:48in the time we've got.
00:55:55After all the treats
00:55:56this week,
00:55:57Steph's made a big hole
00:55:58in their £2,000 spending money.
00:56:01A visit to Joe's
00:56:02favourite Italian restaurant
00:56:03may be super pricey
00:56:05but they can still afford
00:56:06anything they want.
00:56:08Shall we see if we can find
00:56:09the most expensive item
00:56:11on the menu?
00:56:12Are you ready?
00:56:15I found it.
00:56:16Yeah.
00:56:17Definitely the wagyu
00:56:19sirloin.
00:56:19It's, um,
00:56:20£70.
00:56:22It's really expensive.
00:56:24Like,
00:56:24Come on, Matt.
00:56:25Are you ready to order?
00:56:26Yes.
00:56:27Can we have the lasagna
00:56:28for this one, please?
00:56:29Yeah, of course.
00:56:29And can I get
00:56:30the Atlantic cod fillet, please?
00:56:33Yeah, of course.
00:56:34Come on, be brave, memes.
00:56:36No!
00:56:36So she's going to have
00:56:37the wagyu sirloin, please?
00:56:39The wagyu sirloin.
00:56:39Oh!
00:56:40I don't often pull rank
00:56:41on my children
00:56:42but I pulled rank
00:56:43on that moment
00:56:43and I said to her,
00:56:44this is the only opportunity
00:56:45you're going to get
00:56:46to have that steak,
00:56:46like, get the steak.
00:56:48Look at that.
00:56:53There you go.
00:56:56Thank you so much.
00:56:59Well, that won't kill me.
00:57:04I say to her,
00:57:05is it nice?
00:57:06Is it nice?
00:57:07Is it nice?
00:57:07And the kid,
00:57:08she couldn't even speak,
00:57:09she was like,
00:57:10is it good?
00:57:11Does that mean
00:57:12the two for a ten
00:57:13of steaks are out now?
00:57:17At the end,
00:57:18it was like
00:57:19£200, I think,
00:57:21oh!
00:57:21For all the food.
00:57:24I'm speechless
00:57:25how much it was, really.
00:57:27Me not.
00:57:28Wow.
00:57:29Coming up,
00:57:31Steph receives an offer
00:57:32that could change everything.
00:57:35I just went and sold for you.
00:57:38You do the deal,
00:57:38you get paid.
00:57:45Joe and Tracy have learned
00:57:47how tough Steph's life is.
00:57:50She cares for her family,
00:57:51cares for her mum.
00:57:52She's putting them all first.
00:57:55Where does she fit timing
00:57:56for Steph?
00:57:57But just for a moment,
00:57:59Steph and the girls
00:58:00have been touched
00:58:00by a little bit of magic.
00:58:03It feels amazing
00:58:03to be like,
00:58:04not sat on our sofa
00:58:05with cuddly blankets
00:58:07on a Friday night
00:58:08watching a musical
00:58:08but we're actually
00:58:09going into a theatre
00:58:10to watch them.
00:58:13Day seven,
00:58:15the final day
00:58:16of the swap.
00:58:17And it's time
00:58:18for everyone
00:58:18to pack their bags
00:58:20and return home.
00:58:23Oh, I'm so looking forward
00:58:24to going home, Joe.
00:58:25Oh, I can't wait.
00:58:25Try to.
00:58:26Oh, I can't wait either.
00:58:27I'll bet you can't wait
00:58:28to get away from me.
00:58:31In all honesty,
00:58:31I am super excited
00:58:33to be going home.
00:58:34I cannot wait
00:58:34to walk in my front door
00:58:36into my cosy little house
00:58:38with my girls
00:58:39and just, yeah,
00:58:41be home.
00:58:43Before she gets home,
00:58:45Steph will be catching up
00:58:46with Joe and Tracy.
00:58:47And with her mum
00:58:48feeling better,
00:58:49she's going to leave
00:58:50the girls with Nana Gail.
00:58:57The adults are getting together
00:58:58at a local pub.
00:59:00Hello.
00:59:01I'm Joe.
00:59:02Nice to meet you.
00:59:02For Steph,
00:59:03there's a very large elephant
00:59:05in the room.
00:59:06It's freezing.
00:59:08Did she get Joe's company
00:59:10the contract she pitched for?
00:59:13How are you two?
00:59:14Did you survive my house?
00:59:16Of course we did.
00:59:17Of course we did.
00:59:18We had a good time,
00:59:19didn't we?
00:59:19Yeah, we enjoyed it.
00:59:20How did you find my house?
00:59:21Big.
00:59:22No, it's lovely.
00:59:25Absolutely lovely.
00:59:26The girls loved it.
00:59:27Darcy was just beside herself.
00:59:29The one thing she has said
00:59:29is like,
00:59:30Mum, I want the bed.
00:59:32Can we take the bed?
00:59:34So she said to tell you
00:59:35she slept amazing.
00:59:36Good.
00:59:37Do you know what?
00:59:37I slept all right.
00:59:38Did you?
00:59:39I slept all right, yeah.
00:59:40So, what did they find out
00:59:42about each other?
00:59:43I learnt quite a lot about you
00:59:45this week
00:59:45and the truth is this, actually.
00:59:47You are doing it hard.
00:59:50For your family.
00:59:51I want to teach the girls.
00:59:52It's like,
00:59:52I want them to have
00:59:53good work ethics.
00:59:54Because you're working
00:59:55at night as well, aren't you?
00:59:56Yeah, I work till like
00:59:57nine, ten at night.
00:59:58Yeah.
00:59:59It's a credit to you
01:00:00and I think that
01:00:02that work ethic
01:00:03will go through them.
01:00:05But the downside for Steph
01:00:06is that she doesn't get
01:00:07any time for herself.
01:00:10My happiness
01:00:11is built around my money
01:00:12because my money
01:00:13is making my life easy
01:00:14which has given me then time.
01:00:16Yeah.
01:00:17Which you haven't got,
01:00:18I don't think.
01:00:18We've got no
01:00:21time for
01:00:23anything.
01:00:24You know, money does
01:00:25buy you time
01:00:26and I don't think
01:00:28we sometimes appreciate
01:00:31just what we have
01:00:32and how it could
01:00:33all be taken away
01:00:34tomorrow.
01:00:35Yeah.
01:00:35I lost a parent,
01:00:36you've lost a sister
01:00:37and a brother
01:00:37and Tracy lost a child.
01:00:39Yeah.
01:00:40Tracy's right,
01:00:41we should get
01:00:42all the time we can
01:00:43out of the people
01:00:44we love.
01:00:45Steph, how have you
01:00:46coped with the grief,
01:00:48you know,
01:00:48losing your sister,
01:00:50losing your family members
01:00:51that you've lost?
01:00:52I don't talk about it
01:00:54because I don't want
01:00:54to go back to that
01:00:55so I just kind of
01:00:56leave it there.
01:00:57I feel that I've learnt
01:00:59to deal with it
01:01:00a lot more openly,
01:01:02you know,
01:01:03like I chat to Dylan
01:01:04all the time,
01:01:05you know.
01:01:05I don't want to
01:01:06block it away.
01:01:07I want to have tears
01:01:08at times when I miss him
01:01:09and to grieve is natural
01:01:11but to suppress it,
01:01:13that can't be good
01:01:14for us.
01:01:14No, it's not good
01:01:15for us.
01:01:16Meeting you in person
01:01:17has changed something
01:01:19for me that I didn't
01:01:20have in my mind.
01:01:21I go to a hotel
01:01:23in the Lake District
01:01:24to a spa
01:01:25for a night
01:01:27or two nights.
01:01:29I want you to go
01:01:30to that hotel,
01:01:31have some meals,
01:01:33have a walk,
01:01:34use the spa
01:01:35because you
01:01:36need to be a person
01:01:38as well.
01:01:39Not forget your children
01:01:40or your home
01:01:41but maybe forget
01:01:43after ten minutes,
01:01:44you know,
01:01:44but I think
01:01:45that clearness
01:01:46will be good for you.
01:01:48And that's not all.
01:01:50Joe's also organised
01:01:51a Mediterranean holiday
01:01:52for the whole family
01:01:54but now
01:01:56it's down to business.
01:02:00You went to a meeting
01:02:02this week
01:02:02on behalf
01:02:03of our company.
01:02:06Yeah.
01:02:08Now,
01:02:08I then spoke
01:02:09to the CEO
01:02:11and buying doctor
01:02:12who I've never met
01:02:12or spoke to
01:02:15and they were
01:02:16super impressed
01:02:17with your delivery,
01:02:19your product knowledge,
01:02:21everything to do
01:02:22with the aspects
01:02:23of the business
01:02:24and it looks like
01:02:26they're going to buy
01:02:26that product.
01:02:28For Joe,
01:02:30it's all about
01:02:30the deal
01:02:31and he's come up
01:02:32with a whopper
01:02:33for staff.
01:02:34What we've decided
01:02:34is when that order
01:02:35is completed
01:02:38we're going to give you
01:02:39the first 20 grand
01:02:39of the profit.
01:02:41No, you're not.
01:02:42And I want you
01:02:42to clear your debts
01:02:44and put some money
01:02:45in the bank.
01:02:47I just went
01:02:48and sold for you.
01:02:50No, but that's,
01:02:50you do the deal
01:02:51you get paid.
01:02:53You know that?
01:02:54Yeah.
01:02:56So, it doesn't
01:02:57matter what they order
01:02:58the first 20,000 pounds
01:02:59of profit will go to you.
01:03:00After that
01:03:01we'll work out
01:03:01a ratchet deal
01:03:02with you
01:03:02where you continue
01:03:03to earn money
01:03:04off that forever.
01:03:06Moving forward
01:03:08I'm going to need
01:03:08a bigger sales team
01:03:10and I'm going to need
01:03:10people that work
01:03:11how you work.
01:03:12The starting salary
01:03:14in our sales teams
01:03:15is 60 grand.
01:03:17Sorry, what?
01:03:18Now, you haven't
01:03:19got this side today.
01:03:20You can meet everybody.
01:03:21Yeah.
01:03:22And do what you want
01:03:23to do?
01:03:24A little bit
01:03:25mind-blowing
01:03:26at the minute
01:03:26I'm just trying
01:03:27to see
01:03:28the house about it.
01:03:30That's that luck
01:03:31you talk about,
01:03:32isn't it?
01:03:32Yeah.
01:03:34Maybe this is
01:03:34your sliding doors
01:03:35moment
01:03:35that someone gave me.
01:03:38I don't go
01:03:39light-headed
01:03:39or quiet
01:03:40very often
01:03:40but, um...
01:03:44I think it might be
01:03:47the amazing talent.
01:03:59It's time for both
01:04:01families to return
01:04:02home.
01:04:03And after a week
01:04:04living their high life,
01:04:05Steph and the girls
01:04:06must return to reality.
01:04:08But first,
01:04:09they're in for a surprise.
01:04:11Seriously?
01:04:12Oh, my God.
01:04:14D'ass.
01:04:16Oh, my goodness.
01:04:20Look at that.
01:04:23That is a pretty
01:04:24bed, isn't it?
01:04:28It's like a princess.
01:04:31Do you love it?
01:04:32Yeah.
01:04:37Home, sweet home.
01:04:39I'm so pleased
01:04:40to be here.
01:04:42I mean,
01:04:43it's the happiest
01:04:43I've ever been
01:04:44to walk in my door.
01:04:46Walk in it,
01:04:47sister.
01:04:47Oh, my.
01:04:51That's mad.
01:04:53You've changed
01:04:53all the people
01:04:54and everything.
01:04:55I know,
01:04:55it's the last
01:04:56of the mirror.
01:04:57I think it looks
01:04:57amazing.
01:04:58And this is the one
01:04:59thing that I kept
01:05:00saying I wanted
01:05:01to do.
01:05:01This room.
01:05:06Joe's back
01:05:06in his happy place.
01:05:08So, what's he
01:05:09taking away
01:05:09from the week?
01:05:10It's really
01:05:11shined a spotlight
01:05:12on it this week,
01:05:13hasn't it?
01:05:14Just how fortunate
01:05:15of a position
01:05:16we're in.
01:05:17I will never
01:05:18take anything
01:05:18for granted
01:05:19in my life again.
01:05:21And what about
01:05:22Steph?
01:05:23My life isn't
01:05:24over yet.
01:05:25It might just be
01:05:25beginning,
01:05:27to be honest.
01:05:29So, yeah,
01:05:29I think there is
01:05:30a life out there
01:05:30for me now.
01:05:31If I just needed
01:05:32to be brave
01:05:33and do something
01:05:34like this...
01:05:36Me, me.
01:05:37Me, me.
01:05:37And we're
01:05:38going in for a hug.
01:05:40First sisterly hug
01:05:41that we've had
01:05:42all week.
01:05:44I'm walking back
01:05:44in my house
01:05:45today a new person
01:05:46with a new life
01:05:48right in front of me.
01:05:49Yes.
