Four home invasion suspects were shot dead by police, two others have been detained and a manhunt continues after an early morning shootout in Cunupia.

Police say the operation targeted a group linked to a series of violent home invasions in Central Trinidad.Reporter Cindy Raghubar-Teekersingh tells us more.

00:04Rapid gunfire awoke residents of Ramnarine trace of Esmeralda Road, Kanupia in the early hours of
00:11this morning as TTPS officers alongside Defence Force personnel faced off against eight suspected
00:18bandits. According to police, there was an exchange of gunfire and three of the suspects
00:24were fatally shot. Two others were arrested and at least two more escaped. Around midday,
00:31police confirmed one of the escaped suspects was shot after engaging officers during an operation
00:37at 12.30 p.m. He was taken to hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.
00:43The TTPS says coordinated search and containment exercises are actively underway to locate and
00:50apprehend two others who remain at large. TV6 News understands the entire incident began around
00:573.30 a.m. on Saturday when a 70-year-old farmer from Kanupia was awakened by a loud noise
01:04at his home.
01:05He was confronted by five masked men, one armed with a firearm, announced the robbery. The suspects
01:12tied up the elderly man and stole $1,120 in cash and his cell phone. Acting on coordinated
01:20intelligence, officers and soldiers moved swiftly and intercepted the assailants at Ram Narayan Trace.
01:27Three firearms were recovered and the TTPS says all suspects are known to the police.
01:34Investigators say over the past few weeks, Central Division has been plagued by
01:39a spike in home invasions in the Kanupia, Shaguanas, Freeport and Las Lomas communities.
