00:00Precisely in the United States, the collision of Logan Airport workers demonstrate in Boston
00:05to demand higher wages and health care benefits.
00:08Our correspondent Mitch Gaines is there and has more details.
00:17Thanks guys.
00:18I'm here in Boston's East Boston neighborhood, that's the closest location to Logan International
00:22Airport.
00:23Today we're kicking off International Workers' Day across the country and the world here
00:28in Boston with CLAW, that's the Coalition of Logan Airport Workers.
00:32CLAW is organizing for a lot of different reasons that you might expect.
00:35That's higher wages, health care, things of that nature, but most importantly they're
00:39organizing for the same right that other private sector employees have, the ability to stand
00:44out and protest.
00:45At Logan's Airport they can only have 10 people involved in a protest at a time.
00:49You might think that's 10 pilots, that's 10 air flight attendants, that's 10 janitors,
00:54no that's 10 anyone, regardless of what union they're a part of and what job title they hold.
00:59That lack of being able to come together in protest has led to some real shortcomings on
01:03the organizing front, where those same wages, health care benefits, and other things that
01:07we mentioned previously have eroded over time.
01:1110,000 different employees work here at the airport, they're represented by these unions
01:14here today, and of them about 2,200 lack adequate health care.
01:19Across the country, obviously, workers are organizing from teachers to nurses, pretty much every
01:24industry around the world.
01:25But today, here at the airport, the very people who make sure that you can fly safely, travel
01:29in comfort, and most importantly, arrive home at your destination are fighting for the simple
01:34rights that everyone else deserves.
01:35The right to keep a roof over their head, be able to go to a doctor when they're sick,
01:39and be able to be paid a living wage.
01:41I'm Mitch Gaines, live from East Boston, on what will surely be an eventful May Day across
01:46the country, Telesaur English.
01:49Thank you very much Mitch for your information, we will keep in contact.
