00:52Hello, welcome to From the South. I am Lorena Fong from the Telesur Studios in Caracas,
00:56Venezuela. Moving in with the news, stay with us.
01:15In earthquake hit Buenaventura in the Colombian Department of Alla del Cauca, residents are
01:21urging a better response from the national government to the emergency the area faces in
01:26the wake of this seismic event.
01:28More than a week after the earthquake, Buenaventura reports at least 1,150 families
01:33closed their homes and about 55,000 affected people, many of whom remain on the streets due
01:39to the risk of building collapses.
01:40Those camping on the outskirts of the city still have not received any kind of government aid
01:46to access basic services such as healthcare, food and other public services. In addition,
01:52residents are warning about the rapid spread of illness among children due to the lack of
01:57adequate conditions and demanding authorities send medical supplies.
02:06In this context, in Colombia, it is estimated that more than 90% of households do not have
02:11insurance coverage against natural disaster. According to data from the Colombian Insurance
02:16Federation, only 9.3% of the population had an insurance policy valid through March 2026.
02:23Since a 7.4% earthquake struck Colombia in August 10, insurance companies have received more
02:28than 10,000 claims while they have a preliminary fund of $70,250,000 to cover the losses.
02:39This highlights the lack of assets protection for households in the face of natural disasters
02:45with less than 3 million households insured for a total of $824,123.
03:00Venezuela's active president, El C. Rodriguez, denounced the date for the next National Popular Consultation
03:05in 2026, which will take place on October 18. This announcement was made during a Zoom meeting
03:11with the people's government system and the government chambers, where Rodriguez played a key role.
03:17Also, during the meeting, the acting head of state invited the Bolivarian people to repair from the presentation
03:24of projects by the communal circuits and condominiums works. The Popular Consultation is a mechanism
03:31of direct democracy that allows communities to decide on their investments priorities within the framework
03:36of strengthening popular power.
03:44On Tuesday, Fernando Cerimedo, a former advisor to the current president of Bolivia, Rodrigo Paz,
03:50and Argentine president Javier Milley refused to testify in the case in which he is being charged
03:55with attempted suicide against political activist Nadia Beller. Cerimedo, however, is accused of allegedly
04:01a mastermind in the shooting attack against Peter, who was approached by two unknown assailants on Monday
04:07while standing at the entrance to a hotel in Santa Cruz de la Sierra in Bolivia, refused to offer any
04:13information in regard of accusations that claims that he tried to kill her. Cerimedo was arrested after he was
04:21about to board a flight to Buenos Aires, Argentina, just a few hours after the attack. Meanwhile, this Wednesday,
04:27Bolivia's presidential spokesperson, José Luis Galvez, held a press conference where he demanded
04:33a pertinent investigation to the case.
04:42The Chilean president, José Antonio Cas, submitted a constitutional reform bill to the Senate,
04:47consisting of eight measures aimed at expanding the president's power to restrict rights and freedom.
04:52The measures include the creation of a new constitutional state of emergency known as the State of Emergency for Public
04:58Safety.
04:59This initiative would allow the far-right president to declare an area under this regime which has powers similar
05:05to those in effect during a foreign war. Notably, this can be done without going through a Congress for 240
05:11days.
05:12The final decision on the package of measures that redefines the boundaries between presidential authority
05:17and the individual rights of Chileans will be made by the Senate.
05:28On Wednesday, in southern Brazil, a head-on collision between a bus carrying medical patients and a truck
05:34left at least 23 people dead in one of the worst accidents in recent years in the region.
05:39Local authorities stated that most of the victims were traveling in the minibus and that the driver of the other
05:45vehicle also died.
05:46They also noted that initial indications suggested that the truck had veered into the oncoming lane.
05:52Emergency crews, police firefighters and forensic teams were deployed to the scene,
05:57while the highway was temporarily closed as authorities worked to rescue survivors.
06:03Remove the vehicles and investigate the collisions.
06:05In this regard, the municipality of Invituba declared official mourning following the tragedy
06:11and offered psychological support to the victims' families.
06:31As part of Cuba's efforts to overcome the obstacles posed by the United States energy-blockade,
06:37200 electric cars were put into service in various provinces across the country for hemodialysis patients.
06:43On Monday, the first batch of eco-friendly cars began operating in Holguín to transport patients to hemodialysis centers
06:49and support public transportation in the region.
06:52At the same time, 10 electric cars arrived in Santiago de Cuba to be used for public health services.
06:58The municipality of Trinidad in Sancte Espíritu also benefited from the electric cars,
07:03which alleviated the concerns of Taxis Cuba executives regarding the fuel shortage.
07:08These measures demonstrate the Cuban government's commitment to prioritizing the health of its people.

07:52Welcome back to From the South.
07:53Organizations and activists in the United States accuse Immigration and Customs Enforcement IS
07:58of altering its health and safety inspections reports at detention centers.
08:03While internalized reports indicate improvements on optimal conditions in the care of detainees,
08:09actual statistics reflect an escalation of the humanitarian crisis and morality rates within facilities that now house more than 65
08:17,000 people.
08:18According to an analysis by the government oversight project, the number of centers receiving the highest scores has tripled since
08:262024.
08:28This recognition contrasts with growing complaints from detainees and human rights organizations regarding contaminated water,
08:36staff without proper training and critical delays in medical care.
08:45In Indonesia, students protested in the streets of Jakarta to oppose the policies implemented by the government.
08:52The day after the country celebrated its anniversary, protesters demanded that the government address the rise in prices of basic
08:59goods
08:59and curb the concentration of power protesters and also called for a review of the government's free meal program.
09:06This protest comes at a time of growing pressure over the cost of living and the implementation of social programs.
09:13Students shunted slogans against the government's handling of affairs and demanded greater accountability.
09:28On Wednesday, French President Emmanuel Macron signed assisted die-in legislation into law after it was upheld by the Constitutional
09:35Council last week.
09:36In this way, France joins the Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland and Canada, all of which have already legalized the practice.
09:43After years of debate, Parliament passed legislation in July establishing a right to assisted die-in for some adults suffering
09:50from an incurable condition.
09:52To be eligible, a patient must be of legal age, a French national or a long-term resident.
10:13In Peru, on Wednesday, a magnitude 4.8 earthquake was felt at 5.28 a.m., a local time in
10:20Lima, with no reports of injuries or property damage.
10:23According to the Geophysical Institute of Peru, the earthquake had its epicenter in the Pacific Ocean, 42 km southwest of
10:30the district of Lurin, to the south of the Peruvian capital.
10:33In this context, the National Emergency Operations Center stated the tremor was felt as mild to moderate by the population
10:42and explained that it monitored vulnerable areas without any reports of damage.
10:46For its part, the Peruvian Navy's Hydrography and Navigation Directorate reported that the earthquake did not pose a tsunami risk.
10:53Peru is located in an area known as the Pacific Ring of Fire where 80% of the world's seismic
10:59activity occurs.
11:06In Thailand, officials informed damage to homes and roads due to flooding in the north of the country.
11:12Local authorities reported that river overflows caused flooding in several communities following recent rains.
11:19They also stated that rescue efforts are continuing to help residents navigate the floodwaters using boats and ropes while battling
11:26the strong current.
11:28In this context, the authorities issued an emergency mobile alert to the public, urging residents in vulnerable areas to take
11:35precautions or evacuate from the area.
11:48China seeks to advance toward a development model that combines economic growth with environmental protection.
11:54In Anhui Province, our correspondent Bruno Falci visited projects that show how this policy is being implemented on the ground.
12:00Here is his report.
12:04Along the Yantze River, in Anhui Province, Shuejiawa Ecological Park has become a reference for environmental restoration.
12:15Covering around 60 hectares, this area was transformed for degraded land into a green space dedicated to the protection of
12:24nature.
12:29The comprehensive protection of the Yantze River is a priority for the municipal government.
12:35Since 2018, our fishermen began leaving the fishing industry and moving to land.
12:40The government had to relocate them and provide training to help them develop new professional skills.
12:47After this process was completed, pollution in the Yantze decreased.
12:51We also closed small businesses and docks along the river and restored those areas.
12:56What was once a dirty and distorted environment has now become a great and attractive space for the public.
13:02Environmental restoration also transformed the relationship between the population and this area.
13:08Today, Shuejiawa Ecological Park receives more than one million visitors a year and has become a new tourist attraction along
13:18the Yantze River.
13:19Here today, we see a perfect example, what a great job they've done with restoring an ecological park and creating
13:28a beautiful environment from something that was previously polluted area with unsafe housing, waste dumps, hazardous chemical plants and industries.
13:38Affecting the environment is just amazing how they create new jobs for the fishermen, clean up the area and restore
13:46it for it to become a beautiful tourist destination for locals and visitors alike.
13:52I'm really impressed and I wish my country did more efforts like this.
13:56In the heart of the Yantze River Delta, the protection of water resources is combined with new proposals for wellness
14:04tourism.
14:05In Guangdong, water quality has remained at optimal levels for three consecutive years, while the city seeks to turn its
14:15natural resources into a driver of tourism.
14:19At our center, we present the history of the bays as well as intangible cultural heritage and other local tourism
14:29resources.
14:33One of the main elements in this traditional fan-making craft of the Wang family, a tradition that arrived in
14:39the city in the late Qing dynasty and has more than a hundred years of history.
14:45It is the only national level intangible cultural heritage in Guangdong. Each piece requires at least 30 processes to make
14:52and the products are exported to Europe, the United States and Southeast Asia.
14:56From Yantze River to Lukung Reservoir, the protection of water and nature has transformed territories, created new opportunities for those
15:07who once made their living from fishing and promoted a model of sustainable tourism, a process that the Communist Party
15:15of China presents as part of the construction of an ecological civilization and better living conditions for the population.

19:37countries in the region and prevent further escalation of insecurity in the area.
19:42Bagheir reminded the regional parties of the malicious intentions of the United States and Israel to cause destabilization in the
19:49Middle East.
19:55In Palestine, the Israeli military killed at least 10 Gazans and wounded another 20 in two attacks in the central
