00:01Welcome to Dodger Stadium here in Los Angeles tonight the wild card series continues the Reds and the Dodgers as
00:09LA continues their title defense and try to eliminate the Cincinnati Reds last night the Dodgers power was on display
00:17one of the most dynamic offenses in all of baseball they match the franchise record with five homers Boogie was
00:24here around this time last year that Yamamoto had what he has called the most nerve-wracking start of his
00:29career
00:30a winner take all game five of the NLDS against countryman Hugh Darvish coming off an uneven regular season and
00:35a bad playoff debut and Yamamoto was unsure what followed was five scoreless innings to eliminate the Padres he then
00:42pitched well the rest of the playoffs and when he arrived in spring training several Dodgers coaches and front office
00:48members identified Yamamoto as the one who would take the biggest step forward in 2025 what followed obviously was a
00:55Cy Young caliber season and Yamamoto has pointed back to that game five
01:01he said that outing is the reason why he is more calm more confident going into a start like this
01:08Yoshinobu Yamamoto on the mound certainly a Cy Young candidate second year in the major leagues and he's put together
01:15a sensational season including his finish to the year what a September he put together well he is one of
01:23the best pitchers in the National League that's who he is 27 years old and here are the numbers a
01:272 4 9 ERA
01:29just a tick under 174 innings top 10 in strikeout rate in the majors top 10 in ground ball rate
01:36a little more calm tonight here in the Reds dugout for the last month they've had their backs against the
01:41wall several times Tyler Stevenson told me unfortunately that's where we seem to be the most comfortable let's see if
01:48they can dig into that bag of magic tricks one more time no indication from dugout level that they're not
01:54ready to do so
01:55Yamamoto home with a break even pitch to Friedle swing and a well hit fly ball left center field it's
02:00pretty deep Pahez on the run from center same story and left Hernandez reaches up and he makes the catch
02:07on the warning track in deep left center field
02:11out number one of the game a good jump and an absolutely perfect angle to get to the baseball
02:16ball so Yamamoto plunked steer and a man aboard with one out that'll bring up the former Dodger Gavin Lux
02:24gets a nice round of applause from the Dodger fans here 2024 World Series champion broken bat roller right side
02:32Rojas the second one on the first down in time and Lux is a board on the fielder's choice broken
02:37bat roller to second four six erases steer now Austin Hayes he's a right handed hitting outfielder playing in right
02:45tonight
02:45started in left for game one this one lifted in the air shallow right field Teoscar Hernandez a long run
02:53in the top his glove and into foul ground and everybody's gonna be safe runners at second and third a
03:00fair ball as Teoscar Hernandez running forever was not able to haul it in it'll go as an e9 and
03:08an opportunity for Cincinnati watch the lead runner Lux is kind of cruising in I mean you gotta go you
03:14know you just never
03:15never know what happens it rolls away you might be able to steal a run there see if the Reds
03:19can take advantage right now boy that is a huge break for the Reds albeit with two out only two
03:25errors by Teoscar Hernandez all year Sal Stewart standing in Stewart the Reds top prospect ground ball base hit right
03:33field in to score is Lux Hayes will follow he is in and the rookie delivers here in game two
03:41Cincinnati on top it is two to nothing
03:45the Dodgers should be hitting the Dodgers should be hitting but they're still on defense that single right there is
03:50the biggest hit he's had in the big leagues yet that was a huge bat for the Reds and for
03:56Sal Stewart in that spot and now Ellie De La Cruz swing and a miss struck him out Yamamoto locks
04:03up De La Cruz but the Reds score two cashing in on a clutch two out error by the Dodgers
04:10and Teoscar Hernandez
04:11it'll be Zach Littell on the mound overall between Tampa Bay and Cincinnati a 3-8-1 ERA how can
04:18Littell have success against this lineup because on the surface it seems like a mismatch that's a great point Tommy
04:24I think that the biggest thing that you have to do is change speeds and you have to continue to
04:29move the ball around Shohei Ohtani to start things off bounce to the right side Stewart Littell
04:35and Ohtani retired route number one one down for Mookie Betts Mookie Betts at the plate after a two for
04:41four night last night line drive base hit left field that one headed towards the corner steer over to pick
04:48it up and Mookie Betts is in with a double Dougie he did not have his standard Mookie Betts type
04:55year but the final about seven weeks of the season he was pretty locked in
05:00that's got hot at the right time September hit 299 and here we are in the first evening of October
05:08and he gets into scoring position for Freddie Freeman going to swing and a miss struck him out and Littell
05:15able to get Freeman and there's two away two away and out to Oscar Hernandez when you when you come
05:21into a ball game facing the Dodgers it is a good way to expect that no inning is going to
05:28be easy so prepare yourself for that
05:30your battle because every hitter is going to fight you for it after his two home runs last night now
05:35seven career postseason home runs for Hernandez and now he hits a very lazy shallow fly ball to short right
05:41come on coming on as Hayes he'll make the catch side retired and the inning is over Yoshidobu Yamamoto on
05:48the mound he'll face the bottom of the Cincinnati order Stephenson Hayes and McLean swing and a miss struck him
05:55out a heater at 96 and strikeout number two for Yamamoto
06:00ability to control the ability to control the ability to control the ability to control the ability to control the
06:02zone up and down with so many different looks and this is one where he goes with the elevated fastball
06:07anticipating the splitter at least what Stevenson was anticipating the 2-2 to Matt McLean in the ninth spot of
06:13the order caught on and missed strike three beat him with a sinker at 96 bookending gaze in a 1
06:20-2-3 second for Yamamoto keeps the Dodger deficit at two one and a half innings complete
06:25too tight to Pahez and it got him he'll go down to first base on the hit by pitch and
06:29the Dodgers have a one out base runner if you're looking at Lattel we mentioned 36 home runs he's also
06:34he gave up 16 stolen bases in 21 attempts this year so keep an eye on Pahez he's staying for
06:40the first pitch Hernandez chops it to the third base side gold Glover Key Brian Hayes comes in makes the
06:45play throws on the run to get Hernandez and out number two Pahez advances to second runner at second with
06:50two outs
06:50and the batter is the former red farmhand Miguel Rojas Rojas Rojas came off that one lined and caught by
06:58Eli de la Cruz I mean hit right on the nose 105 off the bat but it's the final out
07:06here in the Dodgers second Spencer Steer to the plate who was hit by a pitch his first time up
07:12it's strike three swinging blew it right by him down the pipe at 97 to get his fourth strike out
07:19of the game as you take a look
07:20look at Yamamoto just so graceful and overpowering steer three up three down in the second inning for Yamamoto and
07:29he has gotten the first two batters here in the third and that'll bring Gavin Lux to the point swing
07:34and a line drive out towards left center field Kike Hernandez puts the squeeze on it let's go down in
07:41order in the top of the third Yamamoto given the offense a chance to strike back it's two nothing Cincinnati
07:46back out for the third inning is right hander Zach Littell
07:50he has had traffic on the base pass in both the first and the second inning but he is pitch
07:56scoreless baseball thus far an 0-2 pitch coming work fits slashes it the other way that's a fair ball
08:01down the line picked up in the corner by steer work fit on his horse for second it's a leadoff
08:08double there are moments in the games where you say okay you got to score well this is that moment
08:13right here especially with the top of the batting order coming up bouncer to the right side McClain gobbles it
08:19up and
08:20throws him out and Shohei retired on a single pitch he gets work that over to third with one gun
08:26in the third inning here's a spot that work that you'll be told to go on everything is hit except
08:31hit back to the pitcher that's one for one with a double line drive and that's a base hit out
08:36of the center field and the Dodgers get a run back that's an RBI single work that into score and
08:43it is 2-1 well this is a slider that just hangs up there like a close line it's just
08:49sitting right there
08:49and Betts can stay inside so well look at his head position just punches it through and it continues Freddie
08:56Freeman Betts on first only one out now a 2-1 game swing and a ground ball towards the right
09:02side McClain picks it up gets it to Littell who gets over and a big play right there as the
09:08pitcher covers McClain with a nice play Betts down to second and there's two away but some nice defense there
09:15and out of nowhere here comes McClain
09:17making a diving stop behind Stewart and there was Littell right there at the bag for the out that's now
09:24in scoring position Teoscar Hernandez broken bat roller to short De La Cruz takes it in and throws out Teoscar
09:32Hernandez
09:32and the Reds will get out of it they do allow a run here in the third but still hold
09:37on to that lead well Yamamoto's leaning a little bit more into the fastball he can go down in the
09:43zone up in the zone he has such good secondary pitches which are acting acts like primaries but the reality
09:49is he has this 97 that you could forget about as a hitter and then he could really get in
09:53on you on a 1-2 De La Cruz sends a fly ball to straightaway center field being read by
09:58Pajes eight feet in front of the warning track
10:00he makes the catch ten straight Reds retired by Yoshinobu Yamamoto he's finished with four innings the Dodgers trail two
10:09to one one gone in the fourth inning Kike Hernandez rolls to the plate largest OPS increase regular season to
10:17postseason look at the names that Kike is sandwiched between Carlos Beltran and George Brett line drive ripped right center
10:26field that's gonna touchdown that'll roll all the way to the wall here comes Muncie to third
10:30Dino evil is gonna send him Muncie to the plate and the throw is too late and Kike Hernandez continues
10:38to roll in the postseason he's tied this game at two and that ball was out over the plate and
10:44Hernan is very smart hitting goes the opposite way we got a new ball game but now the go ahead
10:49runner in scoring position with Kike Miguel Rojas the batter Lattel still in the game Lattel deals Rojas swing cars
10:57with the right field that's gonna drop it's a fair ball
11:00inside the line slices to the warning trick Hernandez comes home and the Dodgers have the lead RBI single Miguel
11:07Rojas makes it 3-2 Terry Francona out of the dugout we've got a pitching change and the Dodgers have
11:15the lead the lefty Nick Lodolo making his postseason debut 29 appearances 28 starts Wirtbett pushes a bunt right side
11:27Bobble McClain everybody save
11:29and now back to the top of the order and now back to the top of the order and here's
11:31Shohei Ohtani with two on one out Ohtani swings lifts this in the air right field back goes Hayes under
11:39it and he makes the catch and Shohei getting under that one and on the play Rojas moves up to
11:47third so they're at the corners with two down and Mookie's at the plate from the belt throws the 2
11:54-1 swing and Betts lifts this high in the air short center in comes Friedel he's under
11:59and he's got it and he's got it and the inning is over the Dodgers have taken a 3-2
12:03lead with two in the fourth the Dodgers with the win would knock the Reds out and move on to
12:07face the Phillies but a lot of ball game left and deals another 0-2 got him swinging yep and
12:14they did expand it that's a breaking ball off the plate outside punch out number five for Yamamoto to begin
12:19the fifth on a 1-2 McClain strikes out swinging Yamamoto spins on the mound after he ends the inning
12:26with his sixth strikeout
12:28and that's the top of the order for the Reds coming on to bat DJ Friedel to start he's 0
12:33-2 in the middle of a stretch he is set down 13 in a row line drive base hit right
12:40field Friedel is aboard the tying run is on base here at the sixth he waited on that breaking ball
12:48the Reds have their leadoff man aboard Spencer Sears at the plate line drive and that one out towards center
12:54field and a base hit so back to back hits to a board
12:58and nobody out and nobody out the Reds in business here here's Gavin Lux got one off the plate chopped
13:03towards third Muncie gloves and he's got no play everybody's safe and the Reds have him loaded a chopper off
13:12the plate and Lux with an infield single boy this is a huge spot for the Reds you can't be
13:18over aggressive if you're Austin Hayes because the command of Yamamoto he'll make you chase if you get too aggressive
13:25line drive
13:26one hop gobbled up by Betts he'll come home and Rort that steps on the plate and the Dodgers keep
13:33the lead man Mookie Betts on a ball that was hard hit able to corral that and then said you
13:41know what I'm coming home with this now Sal Stewart bases loaded
13:44now they love the ground ball double play get out of the inning swing and a miss he struck him
13:50out huge strikeout for Yamamoto I mean the precision of Yamamoto I mean it's not only that the pitches have
13:59these shapes and this kind of movement it's where he's putting it I mean I don't know if you could
14:03hand the ball to the catcher any better in that location of the slider he's giving such little room for
14:09you to do anything with it when he makes those kinds of pitching not out of the woods yet they're
14:13still loaded they're
14:14two out and here's Ellie de la Cruz the Cincinnati star shortstop 0 for 2 tonight and his folks aren't
14:22standing their neighbors are imploring them to get up the rally towels start to go here at blue heaven the
14:29sea of blue wherever you look another one to strike three swinging sits him down with a curve bases loaded
14:38no outs and Yamamoto leaves them loaded you know things are going right for you as a hitter
14:44when you hit a ball when you hit a ball that hits the bag back-to-back multi-hit efforts
14:49to open up the postseason for Kike Hernandez Dodgers would love to pad their lead 3-2 in the bottom
14:55of the sixth leadoff and aboard on the ground diving play by Stewart he'll get up and take it himself
15:01as he steps on the bag with the right foot and that is out number one on the play Hernandez
15:06down to second Ben Rortvedt two for two tonight as Rortvedt bounces that one Stewart handles throw
15:14throws it gets past Martinez and backing up is the catcher Tyler Stevenson so that time the rookie throws it
15:22past Martinez who was on the move and it'll go E3 Dodgers have them cornered with Shohei Ohtani at the
15:30plate the two homers last night 55 in the regular year round ball base hit right field Ohtani comes through
15:39Kike Hernandez
15:40is in and Rortvedt is in and Rortvedt makes it to third it's 4-2 Dodgers huge run and now
15:48some huge runs still on base Mookie Betts at the plate the Dodgers double their lead 4-2 and they
15:54don't want to stop there on the ground fair ball past the diving Hayes and down the line it kicks
16:00off the side wall Rortvedt in to score Ohtani to third Mookie's into second it's a three hit night for
16:08Betts
16:08and it's 5-2 and it's 5-2 I mean you talked about picking your poison and you know where
16:14do you go and these guys are all locked in I mean Betts once he's starting to get the head
16:18out I mean you're in trouble because he's able to do that and go to the opposite field Freddie Freeman
16:23will be blocked intentionally so they're loaded for Teoscar Hernandez the Reds need a hold here in a rally to
16:32do it Hernandez with a base hit up the middle that'll score Ohtani
16:36here comes Betts Freeman to third Hernandez in the second and it is 7-2 Dodgers Dodger Stadium is losing
16:48its collective mind what we're witnessing right now is a well-oiled machine that's playing together as a team from
16:55the bottom of the order now to the top of the order Yoshinobu Yamamoto he is not done he is
17:03back on the hill as he stepped
17:06steps out for his seventh inning of work he first pitch of the seventh grounded by Stevenson to Mookie scoops
17:13it up throws to Freddie makes the stretch and the catch one pitch one out in the seventh so the
17:21Reds have a base runner here in the seventh and no movement from Dave Roberts yet in that Dodger dugout
17:29kind of gives you an idea of how uneasy he is about that bullpen doesn't it there is no doubt
17:34about it he's going to ride this horse as long as he's going to ride this
17:36down pitch 106 called strike three throws him with the curve and it is strikeout number nine for Yoshinobu Yamamoto
17:47you know once again the location I mean this is ridiculous look where the glove is it just he just
17:52put it there he didn't even need to frame it really it was already beautiful Dave Roberts is going to
17:58give Yamamoto a chance to finish the seven inside and he walked him and he takes his glove off and
18:06basically mimes like he's going to throw it to the ground Dave Roberts out of the dugout makes the point
18:11to the pen he makes the call down to the bullpen he gave every bit of the leash the Yoshinobu
18:18Yamamoto who has certainly earned that leash and he has earned this standing ovation which Dodger Stadium is giving to
18:25him right now Blake Trinid will take over the right handed hitting Spencer Steer
18:31that one chopped to the left side Betts collects throws the first and Steer is out the Reds lead to
18:39Trinid does the job strands the two inherited runners and keeps the Dodgers ahead by five seven two as we
18:47stand for the stretch of the ravine we go back to the pregame question asked of Terry Francona hey would
18:52you think about intentionally walking Shohei Ohtani and he goes are you kidding me have you heard of Mookie Betts
18:57have you heard of Freddie Freeman well he just issued a walk the Shohei Ohtani intentionally here comes Mookie Betts
19:04and a reminder this year we're in his career with the Dodgers bet seven for 17 with an intentional walk
19:10in front of him be careful what you wish for line fair ball down the left field line have a
19:16night Mookie Betts
19:17Rojas going to trot in and score Ohtani held up at third Mookie Betts four for five with three doubles
19:25and he's knocked in four runs have a night indeed Ohtani on third Betts on second one out in the
19:33seventh infield in for the Reds Freddie Freeman the batter chopped and that one gloved by McClain well done with
19:39the infield and he's able to grab it and toss to first and the runners forced to stay put well
19:46that was a great play by McClain
19:47I mean that is a tough one because you're going back and fielding a ground ball this isn't a pop
19:52up so you got all kind of English on it and spin and he times that jump perfectly as he
19:57was also jumping back towards the outfield so great athleticism good timing and good clock in his head there and
20:03she had out of the Dodger bullpen Reds have two innings but they got a whole lot of work to
20:10do as the Reds have the first two one in the eighth still no out telling you it doesn't take
20:16a whole lot to
20:17start to apply pressure to the bullpen of any club just a little bit of leak a little bit of
20:24melting and then all of a sudden the dam breaks 59 pitches by the Dodger bullpen in the eighth inning
20:31last night that's the most going back to 1988 Sal Stewart to the plate line drive ripped right field and
20:39it'll touchdown for a hit Pa has up with it and coming around
20:43and in to score is Gavin Lux and the Reds get a run back it's 8-3 if you look
20:49at the relief court for this Dodger ball club I mean they finished the 11th out of the 15 National
20:55League teams and earn run average first and second De La Cruz the batter with nobody out the deficit for
21:01Cincinnati is now five and that one gets past worth it and all the way to the backstop and the
21:08runners will advance
21:09no matter what button has been pushed in the bullpen of late disaster seemingly quick to bite the Dodgers well
21:18if we look in the eighth inning last night and tonight that's 80 pitches to get three outs the payoff
21:23up and away not close ball four and the bases are loaded for Tyler Stevenson who's got a terrific slash
21:32line in his career with the bases loaded
21:34well pitches off the plate right now the bullpen it looks like it's contagious now Tyler Stevenson and a swing
21:41and a fly ball left field going back Kike Hernandez the catch is made tagging at third Hayes he will
21:47score and it's 8-4 a sack fly for Stevenson to left field first and second now one out so
21:55again Trinan's already pitched tonight Sasaki has yet to appear in this series Enriquez pitch last night was a disaster
22:02Emmett Sheehan's on the mound
22:03Tyler Glass now the only other righty now digging into the plate is a left handed hitter in Will Benson
22:10Sheehan fires inside and that almost hit him and Benson let go of the bat and hit the dirt and
22:17it's one and two and Dave Roberts I think he might make a mid at bat pitching change yeah he's
22:23going to the mound right now and bring in Vessia to throw some breaking balls to the left handed hitting
22:28Benson he's now taking the ball Emmett Sheehan has been removed from the game in the middle
22:33the middle of a plate appearance against Will Benson Sheehan disgusted with himself as he walks toward the dugout wipes
22:40his brow and now can only watch as Alex Vessia is going to come in and try and clean up
22:45his eighth inning mess by the way they pulled Will Benson back they're going to bring in a new harm
22:50in advance look I don't know the last time I've seen a pitcher removed with a one two count and
22:56without being hurt without being hurt I've never seen that so she comes out of the game and again this
23:02is a young man that has a
23:03bright future for the Dodgers my guess is Dave Roberts telling him something to the effect of okay you better
23:10go flush this one and be ready because we're going to need you one two pitch from Vessia and Duhar
23:16swing and a miss strike three fastball two feet above the zone at 92 and Duhar couldn't lay off and
23:24Mo if I'm not mistaken does that K go to Benson yes it does that's not something that you see
23:29every day but the strikeout is going to go to Benson
23:31rather than on Duhar I think it's actually Sheehan that gets credit for that strikeout on the mound exactly right
23:36now two outs in the eighth first and second for the number nine hitter Matt McLean pitch to McLean runners
23:43go inside ball four and the Reds are bringing the tying run to the plate here in the eighth inning
23:48and it'll be TJ Friedel we saw the base on balls a plenty last night in the seventh and the
23:55eighth inning we are seeing it rear its ugly head for the Dodgers here again they have walked three batters
24:01here in this inning and TJ Friedel comes to the plate with the bases loaded and he represents the tying
24:08run as fans nervously watch again the top of the eighth inning how about another 2-2 that strike three
24:16cold throws him with a slider perfectly placed on the outer half Vessia pumps his fist so too does Rourke
24:24bet as the Dodgers once again force the Reds to leave them loaded they
24:31they remain on top eight four in the middle of the eighth of game number two and the roar that
24:37went through Dodgers Stadium after the bottom of the eighth was to welcome Roki Sasaki the rookie making his postseason
24:44debut in Major League Baseball and the one two swing and a miss and he's gone work that picks it
24:52up and throws him out and Sasaki records out number one here in the ninth now old friend
24:59and Gavin Lux two outs away from a date with the Phillies swing and a miss he struck him out
25:07Yamamoto loves it Sasaki has gotten the first two and the Dodgers one out away from moving on to Philadelphia
25:16Austin Hayes the batter Roki Sasaki sets and fires
25:22soft liner to short Betts is there that's a win for LA the Dodgers are going to the National League
25:29Division Series the Dodgers are going to Philadelphia as they move on in their quest to run it back in
