00:01Tonight from Los Angeles, it's the National League Wild Card Series.
00:05The Reds and the Dodgers from Chavez Ravine as the folks make their way into the ballpark.
00:11And we'll get a look at one of the best players in all of baseball, Shohei Ohtani,
00:16as the Dodgers look to become the first team in 25 years to defend their tight Blake Snell.
00:22You see the numbers for Snell, a .235 ERA limited because of shoulder inflammation.
00:29He felt it in Japan, and they ended up getting him back in August.
00:33As a group, eighth in the NL in runs per game, 14th in the majors.
00:39A real struggle, though, against left-handed pitching.
00:42Friedel is the guy at the top of the order, an on-base percentage machine.
00:46Snell has made just 11 starts this year and continues to be a strikeout machine.
00:52Since his debut in 2016, he has been one of the best strikeout pitchers
00:58in all of baseball, and he gets Friedel right there.
01:01A punch out to begin, and there's one away.
01:04Well, you talk about how does he get these strikeouts.
01:06Well, a lot of it is chasing out of the zone.
01:09His stuff is so good.
01:10Look how far this bounces in front of the plate.
01:12He still gets the swing.
01:13The right fielder, Noel V. Marte.
01:15Right-handed hitter, hit .263 in the regular season.
01:18Swings to the first pitch and lifts the fly ball to left field.
01:20Quique Hernandez trotting back with room to spare in front of the warning track.
01:24He makes the catch.
01:25So out number two with just one pitch for Blake Snell here in the first.
01:29Now this is where the level of difficulty ratchets up for Blake Snell.
01:33Miguel and Dujar, the big trade deadline acquisition for Cincinnati,
01:37and in 34 games with Cincinnati, Dujar hit .359 as OPS 944.
01:42That's lifted out to center.
01:43Edmund out under it, makes the catch.
01:46So Blake Snell gets three outs on seven pitches to put up a zero on the top of the first.
01:51Now this is the top offense in the National League,
01:54and they will go up against a hard-throwing right-hander,
01:57and the kid from Los Angeles, Hunter Green.
01:59His number's 2-7-6.
02:01Like Snell, missed a huge chunk of time.
02:03For Snell, it was the shoulder.
02:04For Green, the groin.
02:06You know, this is a guy that when he's on top of his game,
02:08he's as good as any pitcher in baseball,
02:10but he's pitching at home here at Dodger Stadium.
02:13Shohei Ohtani gets ready to lead things off.
02:16Ohtani only has one hit against Hunter Green.
02:18That happened to be a triple.
02:20He has struck him out three times.
02:22He stands in against Hunter Green.
02:24It's power against power to kick things off.
02:27Swing and a line drive.
02:28Ripped right field.
02:30Back off!
02:32Lead off homer.
02:35Shohei Ohtani, a low liner over the right field fence.
02:39And just like that, the Dodgers make a 1-0 lead.
02:45Shohei explodes immediately.
02:49Well, you talk about hitting a ball 118 miles per hour.
02:53He's matching the velocity of Hunter Green,
02:56who's throwing over 100,
02:57but the timing it takes to hit a pitch on the inner third
03:00and turn it around with the barrel
03:03shows you what Ohtani is capable of.
03:05Betts is on with a base hit right after the Ohtani homerun.
03:09Freddie Freeman coming to the plate.
03:10The 1-2 drilled out towards left field.
03:13Hayes is back.
03:14And he makes the catch.
03:16First out recorded for Hunter Green.
03:19Betts back to first.
03:21And there's one down.
03:22It's a solo homerun.
03:24Now you settle back into your game,
03:26make your pitches,
03:27do your job if you're Hunter Green.
03:29And that's in there,
03:30and Muncie has gone at a pitch at 100 miles an hour.
03:34Well, this is what 100 can do
03:36when you throw it down in the zone.
03:38Hitters give up on it.
03:39They think, okay, that's going to be low,
03:40and it just doesn't go down there
03:42because it's got so much velocity.
03:44Two away, and the batter is Teoscar Hernandez.
03:47Scrums one through the left side,
03:49and a base hit.
03:50That between Hayes and De La Cruz.
03:54Third hit of the inning.
03:55Two on and two out.
03:56You see what the Dodgers are doing.
03:58They are awfully, awfully aggressive here early.
04:01Tommy Edmond, swing and a miss,
04:03and Green gets Edmond,
04:05but Otani puts a charge into one.
04:07The Dodgers up 1-0
04:08as Blake Snell toes the slab
04:10for the top of the second.
04:11They'll face 4, 5, and 6 for Cincinnati.
04:13On the ground to third.
04:14Muncie picks it up.
04:17And throws out Hayes.
04:19Steer's one of only two players in the lineup.
04:21Make that on this Reds roster right now
04:23that have hits.
04:24I mean hits against Blake Snell.
04:27Steer drives this to left,
04:29but Kike Hernandez is there,
04:31and he makes the catch.
04:32This is a guy I'm really curious to see
04:34how he responds to this moment,
04:36because Ellie has a tendency
04:38when the lights are the brightest
04:39to really shine.
04:41A 1-2 pitch.
04:42That's strike three.
04:44A curveball at the knees.
04:45De La Cruz will not protest that.
04:48Six up, six down for Blake Snell.
04:50Still 1-0 Dodgers.
04:52One and a half innings complete.
04:53That is out number two of the second.
04:55Kike over to second base
04:56in scoring position for Shohei.
04:58Right now, Ohtani is the most dangerous hitter
05:00in the league.
05:01And strike three called.
05:03Got him looking.
05:04Fastball outer half about knee high,
05:06and Ohtani just watched it.
05:0816 pitches to get six outs for Snell.
05:11Not a shock to see him go six up, six down.
05:14But the pitch efficiency is notable.
05:16And a swing and a miss.
05:18Seven in a row retired by Blake Snell
05:20to begin this one.
05:22Well, here's Matt McClain.
05:23He's hitting in the number nine spot.
05:25And he rips this one down the left field line
05:28that's heading into the corner.
05:29And that will be an automatic double
05:32for the speedy Matt McClain.
05:35And that is the Reds' first hit of the ball game.
05:37So the nine hitter has the Reds' first knock of the night
05:41in a man in scoring position here in the third.
05:44And he takes downstairs outside,
05:46and T.J. Friedel on base for the first time tonight.
05:49Back-to-back base runners for the Reds.
05:52Now Noel V. Marte.
05:53This kid is still a youngster coming into his own
05:57as their right fielder.
05:58He steps in with first and second and two out.
06:00Swing and a miss.
06:02Struck him out and a changeup.
06:03And Snell able to record the punch out.
06:06His fourth of the night.
06:07The Reds leave a couple.
06:09Dodgers leading one to nothing.
06:12And Hunter Green back to the hill.
06:14Back-to-back walks with one out.
06:17And the Dodgers have a little something cooking
06:19here in the third.
06:20It's important for the Dodgers
06:21to take advantage of opportunities like this.
06:23First and second, one out.
06:25You have them, a team that's inexperienced.
06:28Hunter Green's making his postseason debut.
06:30Now's the time to step on the pole.
06:31And that went all the way to the backstop.
06:34Stevenson will collect, and the runners will advance.
06:37Hunter Green out of sorts.
06:38You have to try to find that slot again.
06:41Right now he's up against the ropes.
06:43Second and third here.
06:45That's drilled.
06:46Left field.
06:47That's back on its way.
06:48And out of here.
06:50Teoscar Hernandez unloads.
06:52And the Dodgers have a 4-0 lead.
06:57Well, this is the thing about Teoscar Hernandez.
06:59His ability to take that expansion of the zone
07:02and still attack and drive the ball.
07:04He sat back, got a slider.
07:06He figured, okay, well, Green is not throwing strikes right now.
07:10So what is he going to go to off the fastball?
07:12Well, he goes to the slider, and Hernandez did not miss it.
07:16One thing I thought the Reds did a really good job of in the Brewers series,
07:20keeping a packed American family field pretty dormant for the most part.
07:24Dodger Stadium is anything but right now.
07:27I mean, this place is shaking.
07:28Here's Tommy Edmund.
07:30Edmund drives one towards the corner, and it's gone!
07:34The Dodgers go back-to-back here in the third.
07:38Tommy Tanks adds another.
07:40It is now 5-0 Dodgers.
07:43Well, this crowd is absolutely bananas right now.
07:47And it's not like this is easy to do against Hunter Green.
07:51But they started the inning showing their discipline at the plate,
07:55working the count.
07:56And once Green was a little bit erratic,
07:58they knew he had to force him back into the zone.
08:01And they stayed back so well on back-to-back hitters.
08:04Two homers in a span of three pitches.
08:08Jason Bateman absolutely loving it.
08:11The pitch.
08:12Strike three.
08:13Fastball right at the bottom of the strike zone.
08:17Hernandez can't believe it.
08:18But that's the third out of the inning.
08:20Back-to-back home runs.
08:22Teoscar Hernandez, Tommy Edmund.
08:24Four runs across.
08:26Five-nothing Dodgers.
08:28Top of the fourth inning for Blake Snell.
08:31And a great start for the Dodgers to kick off this wild-card series.
08:34And pitch.
08:35Cut on and miss.
08:36Strike three.
08:37High heat at 97 from Snell.
08:39Snell now with five strikeouts.
08:42His Dodgers postseason debut.
08:44Swing and a miss.
08:45Struck him out.
08:46And that's a half-dozen strikeouts.
08:48Yeah, this is what is so hard to deal with Blake Snell.
08:51He can go in and then he turns this fade away.
08:54It looks like the fastball.
08:55I think it's the fastball.
08:56It might be the fastball.
08:57And then it's not.
08:58And it goes away, fading away.
09:00So, it looks like these hitters are swinging pitches three inches outside.
09:02But it didn't start there.
09:04Pitch to steer.
09:06Rolled back to the mound.
09:07Fielded calmly by Snell.
09:08He throws to Freddie Freeman who steps on the bag.
09:11And that's a one, two, three, fourth inning for Snell who picks up two more strikeouts.
09:15He's got six through four scoreless innings.
09:17Scott Barlow out of the bullpen for the Reds as he takes over for Hunter Green.
09:23Green, five runs and three home runs in his three postseason first-time inning.
09:30Swing and a miss.
09:31Struck him out.
09:32And Scott Barlow out of the Reds' bullpen strikes out the side in the fourth.
09:37Now the Reds' top hitter, Elie De La Cruz, leads off the fifth against Blake Snell.
09:42Swing and a miss.
09:44De La Cruz down on strikes.
09:45He won changeup.
09:47That's seven punchouts now for Blake Snell.
09:50Two down and keep Ryan Hayes.
09:52Snell's 1-1.
09:52Hayes grounds it between Snell's legs.
09:54Fielded right up with the bag.
09:56Tommy Edmund at second.
09:57He gets it to Freddie Freeman.
09:58And Snell retires the Reds in order in the fifth.
10:01He has retired the last seven Cincinnati hitters he's faced.
10:05He's done with five shutout innings.
10:07Teoscar Hernandez.
10:08Hernandez has the biggest hit of the ninth.
10:11Drilled out towards right center field.
10:13Friedel is back.
10:14That one is gone.
10:17Teoscar Hernandez, his second of the night.
10:20And the Dodgers lead it six to nothing.
10:23Well, the thing about Teoscar Hernandez is he has power to all fields.
10:28This is a home run derby champion.
10:30We're talking about who can hit any pitch in any direction.
10:33That is his strength.
10:34And as aggressive as he is, he's able to do that even when he's expanding the zone.
10:40His pitch kind of starts out.
10:42It runs right back.
10:43And he was looking away.
10:44And he gets right into the sweet spot.
10:46Matt McLean was the lone Reds hit tonight.
10:49And at the ninth spot of the order was a two-out double in the third.
10:52And a swing and a miss.
10:53Another strikeout for Snell.
10:56And the lefty now has eight.
10:58What we're saying Blake Snell do, Stephen, at this particular point, it's not nearly as easy as he has made
11:03it look to this point.
11:04He has not had to throw many stressful pitches tonight.
11:08Dodger Stadium on its feet.
11:09Here's the 0-2 to Marte.
11:11Strike three swinging.
11:12Blake Snell with bookending Kays.
11:15Another 1-2-3 inning.
11:17And he is up to nine punch outs with six zeros on the board behind him.
11:22Two outs a runner on.
11:23Shohei led off the game with a home run.
11:25He has struck out in two plate appearances since.
11:28On a 1-1.
11:29Otani.
11:29It's a towering ball.
11:31Deep right field.
11:33He flips the bat and watches it fly.
11:36Three quarters of the way up the pavilion.
11:40Just a mammoth blast for his second home run.
11:44And the Dodgers are pouring it on in game one.
11:48Otani's second of the night.
11:49And the Dodgers are feeling great.
11:52It is 8-0.
11:55And he is something else.
11:57Well, you can see his own bullpen just in awe of what he's able to do.
12:01I mean, he just has the ability to change the game with one swing.
12:05To do something you've never seen before in one moment.
12:09And Shohei Otani delivers once again.
12:11Never satisfied.
12:13They got the lead.
12:14He's tacking on.
12:15And he continues to just blow our minds on what is possible on a baseball field.
12:19They can't believe it out there how far the ball traveled.
12:22Oh, look out, Mookie.
12:2496 up and in.
12:26It's ball four, but that nearly was a lot worse.
12:30That garners some boos as Betts had to hit the deck to get out of the way of that.
12:34Freddie Freeman dusts off his right shoulder and taps him on the helmet.
12:37And Betts will head down to first base.
12:39But that one got away from Connor Phillips.
12:41Five home runs, which ties the franchise record for the most home runs in a single postseason game.
12:47Blake Snell on the mound is doing the rest.
12:49Snell to the dish.
12:51Ground ball left side.
12:52That's a base hit into left field.
12:54And Hayes has the red second hit of the night.
12:57No ball, one strike count.
12:59Left-hander Snell sets and he'll turn it loose.
13:01And over the head of a leaping Freddie Freeman into right field, a base hit for Spencer Steer.
13:08On to third is Austin Hayes.
13:11So back-to-back hits from the Reds here in the seventh as they try to chase Blake Snell from
13:17this ball game.
13:18So runners at first and third, one out in the inning, and here's Elliott.
13:23On the ground, Betts to second in Rojas.
13:26On to first, safe, and a run scores.
13:29And he can really fly.
13:30He beat that one out, and the Reds get on the board.
13:34So that'll be a fielder's choice by De La Cruz.
13:37He will be credited with an RBI scoring Hayes from third base.
13:42De La Cruz at first.
13:44Here's Tyler Stevenson with two down.
13:46And a 1-1.
13:48Line drive down the left side.
13:50That's a fair ball.
13:51That'll get into the corner.
13:52Kike Hernandez digs it out.
13:54They're going to send Elliott De La Cruz.
13:56And he's in to score.
13:57It's an RBI double, and it's 8-2.
14:01And after that two-out double by Stevenson, here's Brian Hayes.
14:05Ground ball, softly hit right side.
14:07Rojas takes it in.
14:09Throws out Hayes.
14:10The Reds do score a couple of runs on three hits.
14:13They leave a batter.
14:15And for Blake Snell, gets a standing ovation as he heads back to the dugout.
14:19Let's watch how Blake Snell was able to really neutralize this Reds offense.
14:23The changeup was just money.
14:24These are off the plate.
14:26It looks so good.
14:27And then he takes a little bit more off of it.
14:29So it rotated.
14:30It starts in the zone.
14:31It fades out of the zone.
14:32He's located it away and down.
14:34Not in any dangerous spots.
14:36And the Reds just could not lay off it.
14:38But it looked so good at first, and then it was gone.
14:40So a pinch hitter.
14:42It's Alex Call.
14:44It's 8-2 Dodgers.
14:45Two outs and a runner-on here in the bottom of the seventh inning.
14:49First pitch call.
14:49Little flare.
14:50Right field side.
14:51That'll bloop down for a hit.
14:52Rojas cuts the bag at second.
14:54He'll go to third.
14:55The throw.
14:56Nobody's there.
14:57It goes into the Dodger dugout.
14:59What a mistake from Noel V. Marte.
15:02He gives the Dodgers another run.
15:04Well, Marte took extra time to get the ball and throw it.
15:08Maybe he didn't have a good grip.
15:10But when he threw to third base, there was nobody home.
15:13Backing up was Suter.
15:14Suter slipped and fell in the warning track.
15:17So the lead back to seven.
15:19And then Ben Roarkbet gets it back to eight.
15:22Jumps on the first pitch.
15:23An opposite field single.
15:25And an RBI for Benny Biceps.
15:27The two runs the Reds got on the top of the seventh.
15:30The Dodgers grabbed him right back in the home half.
15:33Make it 10-2.
15:34Ball four.
15:35And that's another two-strike base runner for Vessia in this inning.
15:38And Dave Roberts has seen enough.
15:4022 pitches.
15:41Only one out recorded.
15:432-1 for Cincinnati.
15:44See you, Vessia.
15:45Right-hander Edgardo Enriquez out of the Dodger bullpen.
15:50He will get Miguel Andujar.
15:52First and second.
15:53One out.
15:53High.
15:54Ball four.
15:54And they're loaded.
15:56You can't issue walks.
15:57That's the second one in this inning.
15:59And again, Moe, we talked about the Dodger bullpen.
16:02It was beleaguered throughout the regular season, especially in the second half.
16:05Yes, they finished relatively strong.
16:07Again, you are up by eight.
16:09There is really no reason to be messing around.
16:11You have to challenge hitters.
16:13You cannot issue free passes.
16:14And Sal Stewart is at the plate right now.
16:16This is a rookie with some big-time pop.
16:18Payoff pitch.
16:20And that's low.
16:21Ball four.
16:22103, but well below the zone.
16:25Enriquez has just walked in.
16:27A run for the Reds.
16:29That was 103, and it might as well be 20 miles an hour if you can't find the strike zone.
16:34If you're going to allow another team to beat you or get back in the game against you, make them
16:40do it.
16:41Spencer Steer now started the game at first.
16:43Now in left.
16:44Ball loaded up.
16:45Up the middle of the base.
16:47Hit.
16:47Marte's coming in.
16:49And Duhar will stop at third as the throw comes to the plate.
16:52And a great throw from Pahez.
16:55And Dave Roberts probably can't get to the mound quick enough to get Enriquez out of this game.
17:00Left-hander Jack Dreyer out of the bullpen for the Dodgers.
17:05He is the third pitcher here in this eighth inning.
17:09He will get Ellie De La Cruz with the bases loaded as the Reds are rallying here in the eighth.
17:15It's 10-4.
17:16Three and two.
17:18And that's ball four.
17:20And they've walked in another run.
17:23And it's 10-5.
17:25The second run that the Dodgers have walked in this inning.
17:29That is the fourth walk in the inning from this Dodger bullpen.
17:34Wow.
17:34Tyler Stevenson comes to the plate.
17:37And don't look now.
17:39But all of a sudden, the tying run is out on deck for the Reds here in the eighth.
17:43The angst grows.
17:45Stevenson putting together a good at bat.
17:47Stevenson in his career, close to a 3-20 hitter with the bases loaded.
17:51This is scary time.
17:53The last couple he's helped out Dreyer a little bit.
17:55Those are out of the zone.
17:57Five two-strike fouls as Dave Roberts can barely watch.
18:01Pitch number 11.
18:02Strike three swinging.
18:04Got him with a slider below the zone.
18:06And that is out number two at long last.
18:10Huge strikeout for Dreyer.
18:12There's two away.
18:13They're not done yet.
18:14The bases are loaded.
18:16Still, for Kebrian Hayes.
18:18The 0-1 from Dreyer.
18:20Popped him up on the infield.
18:23Freddie Freeman at the edge of the dirt at first base.
