Kenley Jansen gave up another walk off home run.
Transcript
00:00I do find a little irony in Cade passing Dave Bing for the most points in a Piston playoff game
00:08ever.
00:0845 for Cade last night.
00:10Bing had 44 back in 1968.
00:13The irony, some may remember this, early in Cade's tenure with the Pistons, Dave Bing was quoted as saying,
00:19Cade doesn't have that dog in him.
00:20Essentially.
00:21He said, I don't think he's a guy you build your team around.
00:23We still have to get that guy.
00:24We don't have it yet, in my opinion.
00:28Some irony.
00:29Yeah.
00:30That he passes Bing.
00:32All right.
00:32Last night's Tigers game.
00:33I know, John, that was your focal point.
00:36Sure.
00:36And I will say this now, that I will be watching the Pistons on Friday night versus the Tigers.
00:44It'll be a flip back and forth, but I will be watching the Pistons.
00:49Personal growth.
00:50Imagine watching a losing baseball team last night instead of that performance.
00:54Imagine.
00:55To paraphrase Jim Caldeball, more of that flip back and forth kind of thing is what you'll be doing.
01:02Oh, swapping?
01:03Yeah.
01:03It's a different version of swapping that I'll have.
01:06But yeah, I understand where you're going with that.
01:08Now, you are sticking out your chest a little bit today.
01:10Yeah, because I feel like I'm in my prime as a radio host.
01:17And I'm sure there's people listening going, yeah, I'm not sure that's ever going to happen.
01:22But as I wake up this morning and as I went to bed and laid my head on the pillow
01:27last night, I was very confident that between the two Janssens that one of them was on the airwaves last
01:37night in performance and one is on the airwaves this morning, I kind of feel like I got the edge
01:43now.
01:44You're the best Janssen in the city of Detroit?
01:46Yes, yes.
01:47Currently, yes.
01:48And the rankings did come out this morning and Kenley Janssen's, no pun intended, took a hit last night.
01:56Two straight blown saves.
01:58He's given up a base runner in six straight outings.
02:00He's blown three saves in nine appearances this season.
02:04He only blew one save all of last year.
02:09I'm not going to lose my mind over a couple of blown saves.
02:12It's just disappointing when you're going up against one of the best teams in baseball and you're following with a
02:20performance that Tarek Skubal put together.
02:22Like that was going to be a hard fought victory.
02:26And you feel the odds are in your favor when all of a sudden, hey, Kenley Janssen comes trotting in
02:32from the outfield and takes the mound.
02:34All right.
02:35Hey, we're going to you could say we're going to win one.
02:37We're going to steal one.
02:38We're going to do whatever.
02:38But we're going to get one in the win column against the Atlanta Braves, whose lineup is really tough to
02:46pitch against.
02:47Skubal did a great job.
02:49He did.
02:50And then all of a sudden you think, hey, Kenley Janssen, he's been in this situation before.
02:53He's been in in higher leverage situations before.
02:56He can bring this one home and then boom.
03:00Let's go see what the Tigers or what the Pistons are doing.
03:04Yeah, pretty much.
03:05I don't want to fly off the handle.
03:06I just know in this city we've seen the aging closer lose it.
03:10And when they lose it, they lose it quick.
03:12So I'm thinking Joe Nathan.
03:14I'm thinking K-Rod.
03:16I'm thinking when Valverde went from perfect in a season to just a couple years later, unplayable.
03:23When it goes, it goes quick.
03:25Not willing to say it's gone in April, but he's already blown three saves this year after blowing one all
03:34of last year.
03:34So he's got out of his system.
03:36That's what we're saying.
03:38Right.
03:39Yeah, that's what I'm saying.
03:43It's unfortunate.
03:45But again, I'm not going to lose my mind.
03:48I understand the foolishness of watching one of 162 last night versus the Pistons.
03:57Oh, do you?
03:58Yeah, I get that.
03:59I admitted it yesterday.
04:01But the Tigers are my first love.
04:04My first sports love.
04:05And now that they've got a player like Kevin McGonigal, who, by the way, reached base safely yet again.
04:12Is it 26 in a row?
04:13Yeah.
04:14There's only one time this season he hasn't.
04:17It's unbelievable.
04:18There's only two position players that are a two-war player at this point in the season.
04:24And our rookie is one of them.
04:26You can't tell me that you can't be excited about watching that every single night.
04:30I'm enjoying watching McGonigal.
04:31It's just taking a backseat to a game with the season on the line for another one of our teams.
04:35Who's a bigger star?
04:37Oh, you want to do that deal?
04:39On the heels of a 45-point performance?
04:43It's still Cade.
04:45But the fact we did that draft a couple weeks ago of, like, your Detroit Stars.
04:51If we did it again, McGonigal's in the top two.
04:55Two, four, eight, five, three, nine, 97, 97.
04:57No, I'm not scolding you.
04:58You do whatever you want.
04:59But when those are the two options last night, I kind of felt like you got what you deserved.
05:05All right.
05:05So let's just hypothetically ask this one.
05:07If there's a game seven on Sunday night going against Tigers Sunday Night Baseball, what are you doing?
05:15Say that again?
05:16If there's a game seven on Sunday night going against Tigers Sunday Night Baseball against the Rangers, what are you
05:22watching?
05:23I'm watching game seven.
05:24I know.
05:25And I think part of what last night was for you was that you kind of had given up on
05:29the Pistons.
05:30You were fed up with their performance.
05:31And then you got Scooble pitching, too.
05:33Right.
05:33I don't think John gave up.
05:34I think fed up is the better way to put it.
05:36And you still watch some of the Pistons.
05:37I was disgusted with the Pistons.
05:40And I don't know.
05:40Even the most staunch Pistons fan, and maybe the most staunch Pistons fan, was right along with me.
05:46I just completely disgusted with the fact that you're a one seed, you won 60 games, you're down 3-1.
05:54How is that possible?
05:55And maybe those individuals were watching the Pistons last night.
05:58I just simply wasn't.
06:00We also don't know, first of all, if there will be a game seven for the Pistons or when it
06:04will be on Sunday if they play one.
06:07It could be any time.
06:08Because the Tigers are Sunday Night Baseball, Tom brings up.
06:11We could have as many as six different game sevens in the NBA this weekend.
06:16Yeah, three each day, potentially.
06:18Could be three on Saturday, three on Sunday.
06:19Unlikely, but they're all still alive right now.
06:22Yeah, I mean, and they could start round two if some of these things get decided.
06:25Yeah, the Spurs and Thunder are just kicking their feet up waiting.
06:28Yeah, that's two teams in the league.
06:29Pretty obvious, right?
06:30Yeah.
06:31So with this Jansen thing, how long do they wait before they consider giving it to Finnegan?
06:37Well, that's the beauty of it.
06:38They have two other guys who are big-time saves dudes.
06:40I'm not giving it to Vest.
06:43I don't know that I have a lot of confidence in Will Vest right now, either.
06:47My point is they have options.
06:48Finnegan's got a .61 ERA.
06:51Giving up one earned run all season.
06:54So are we back to Finnegan and friends in the bullpen?
06:57Yeah.
07:01That is a great point, though.
07:03They have options.
07:04And right now, the best option may not be Kenley Jansen.
07:10It may be Finnegan.
07:11We get to June or July, and maybe it's Vest.
07:16He finds his swagger, and he gets it back.
07:18And maybe by the end of the season, it is Kenley Jansen.
07:22And it doesn't have to be a one-month period of time, but they do have those options.
07:28Yeah.
07:28Look, when they brought Kenley Jansen in, it was to pitch impactful moments in September
07:32and October.
07:35Unless it really falls apart.
07:37Well, you can't.
07:39You're right.
07:40Yeah.
07:40But you also can't.
07:42Oh, I don't suggest.
07:44Opportunities like you had last night against good baseball teams.
07:46This team should have a winning record right now, and they don't.
07:49And it's not just Kenley Jansen, but these things can't keep adding up as you get into
07:53May, June, and July.
07:54Fortunately, they're in a terrible division.
07:58Where are they at in that division right now?
08:00I think they're second because they played one less game.
08:02They've got one less win than Cleveland.
08:06Yeah, they're 15-16, Cleveland 16-16.
08:08The American League only has three teams above 500.
08:11Wow.
08:11I mean, this thing is for the taking.
08:13I mean, the Yankees are playing great baseball right now.
08:17By the way, is this something or nothing?
08:21Tigers are 5-14 on the road.
08:24I think it's nothing.
08:25Really?
08:27Yeah.
08:28I mean, what's the implication?
08:29This team can't travel?
08:31I think.
08:32Something's happened on a team plane?
08:33I think it's a nothing, too.
08:35I think the something is that they have had a super heavy National League schedule.
08:41The National League is clearly better than the American League.
08:45And there might be some balancing out here when they play the American League more.
08:48Who are the teams they've played on the road?
08:49That's a good point.
08:51So the Braves, obviously, right now.
08:53San Diego early in the season.
08:56Arizona.
08:56They got swept by Minnesota.
09:00Yeah.
09:00And Cincinnati.
09:01You're right.
09:02So, yeah.
09:03I see what you're saying.
09:04The Braves have the best record in baseball, by the way.
09:07Yeah.
09:08So you think it balances out when they get to go play at the White Sox?
09:11Yeah.
09:12You know, when you get more of those series later in the summer?
09:14At the Mets.
09:16Unbelievable.
09:17It's so bizarre.
09:19A billion doesn't buy you much.
09:21Not what it used to.
09:22Let's get to Terry in Rochester.
09:24Terry, good morning.
09:29Terry, good morning.
09:30How you doing?
09:31Good morning, guys.
09:33How you guys doing?
09:33Love the show.
09:36Oh, yeah.
09:37So, first of all, Casey is insane.
09:41Absolutely insane for that take.
09:43That is the main reason why I called in today.
09:45He triggered me.
09:46He got me calling in.
09:47However, Jensen, that comment of McGonagall being better than Cade,
09:53absolutely insane, or being more popular.
09:56In five years' time, I don't think anybody is going to be wearing
09:59a signature McGonagall shoe, you know?
10:03Oh, I disagree.
10:05I disagree, but I was asking the question.
10:07I didn't make a statement that McGonagall is better than Cade.
10:13My apologies.
10:14My apologies.
10:15That's all right.
10:16The second thing I want to bring up, I really think, I mean, I don't know what
10:20happened between Duncan Robinson and Bain in that first quarter, but Duncan
10:24Robinson said something that really got under his skin.
10:27And Bain is usually that player for the magic that kind of stirs the pot.
10:32Yep.
10:32I think that's something that they got to do going forward, just getting guys in there
10:37like a Ron Holland, you know, getting in there and just messing with Bain a little bit, getting
10:41him off his game.
10:42Because if that's the case, it comes down to a battle between Paolo and Cade.
10:48And as they said last night, they've been doing this in AAU for a while.
10:54And who came out on top most times?
10:56Cade Cunningham.
10:57So, you got to get Bain off his game.
11:00I think you got to give Jenkins maybe some less minutes.
11:03Bring in Sasser.
11:04I want to see Sasser out there.
11:06He has a great three-point percentage, and I think he can really shake things up and cause
11:10some spacing.
11:11Yeah, I haven't seen him.
11:13Crossed my mind going into game five.
11:15He didn't play, obviously, last night.
11:20Texters, no more 40-plus-year-old players for the Tigers, please.
11:24Steve in Bloomfield Hills.
11:26This is Todd Jones, part two.
11:28Stress every time Jansen's on the mound.
11:30That's Mike on his way to work.
11:33Kenley Jansen is absolute trash.
11:35It's not just that he's blown saves.
11:37Even when he's gotten saves, guys are tagging a ball all over the field.
11:40The outs are only because they're hit at someone.
11:42He has to go down to the sixth or seventh inning role.
11:45That's Vinny at work.
11:46His command needs to get back up before he's in the closing spot.
11:49He should apologize to everyone on the team profusely.
11:56Okay.
11:58Going one by one in the locker room.
12:00Right, yes.
12:01I'm sorry.
12:02Yes, I'm sorry.
12:02I'm sorry.
12:03What is two walk-offs in five games on this road trip?
12:05Yeah.
12:07They're going to happen, okay?
12:08Right.
12:09And it just sucks that they happen in back-to-back performances.
12:13And to the Texas point, he mentioned Todd Jones.
12:15We have a history of seeing the closer who's here one year too long.
12:21It's in the back of your mind.
12:22You can't declare it on April 30th, but it's in your mind as a Tigers fan.
12:26No.
12:26Come on.
12:27Once JV gets healthy and then you get Melton and Jobe up here in August,
12:32JV can move to the closer role.
12:34There you go.
12:36So, I mean, postseason it probably will be, if he's even on the postseason roster,
12:42a bullpen role.
12:43So, back in those crazy Leland-era closing days, I actually, it was so bad,
12:48I proposed that Porcello be the closer.
12:52And Leland, Rieger asked Leland about it.
12:54He's like, it's not a bad idea.
12:56He actually gave it credibility.
12:59Didn't he say something like, but his agent would never go for it?
13:01Right, because he's a starter and it would hurt his value and his contract
13:04and all this stuff.
13:05Well, I remember people used to make the JV to the bullpen calls.
13:08When he started to go down, he had a couple rough.
13:12See, this is something, and Greg's frustrated with me because it'll probably
13:16never happen because now players control their roles more.
13:20I mean, obviously, look at Boris and Scooble.
13:23Back in the day, there's several examples of starters going to the bullpen
13:26closing role and being excellent.
13:30Let's not win.
13:31And let's worry about your contract.
13:32Right, yeah.
13:33Your next contract, your market value.
13:35All right, game plan moving forward here.
13:37Eight o'clock hour, Bruno Mars tickets.
13:39Got Dear John coming up at 735.
13:41We've got the two grand slam coming up in 10 minutes.
13:44Heather's News next, 97.1.
13:45I'm going to go to the top of the top of the top of the top of the top of
13:45the top of the top of the top of the top of the top of the top of the top
13:45of the top of the top of the top of the top of the top of the top of the
13:45top.
