EB has returned from Utah and fills us all in on his very interesting trip!
Transcript
00:00Did you hit any sights in Utah?
00:03Not really, just the town.
00:04We were just in Salt Lake.
00:06Very cool, very cool city.
00:08Well, hold on, before you get to the city,
00:09I want to hear about the travel.
00:11How does travel out there?
00:14I'm as anxious about it being a long flight.
00:17You're anxious about the long flight, getting out there, yeah.
00:18It was fine. I mean, it was a long flight.
00:20For some reason, I was so tired, I was able to sleep a couple hours of it.
00:23It was like four and a half to get out there.
00:26You know, I downloaded a couple podcasts, whatever I could listen to,
00:29to kind of keep me occupied.
00:30But it wasn't horrible.
00:33I had to get up and use the bathroom once in a four hour.
00:35So there were no delays and no long lines?
00:38No, no, no. It was fine.
00:39It's just long.
00:40I don't think anybody likes flying.
00:43What was it, about a five-hour flight?
00:44Four and a half.
00:45It's funny.
00:46Everybody gets on the flight, and I notice this,
00:48and everyone's kind of freshly manicured, whatever,
00:51ready to start their trip.
00:52By the time you land there four and a half hours,
00:54people look like they've been through a hurricane.
00:56Yeah, they look like they've been sleeping for four hours.
00:58It just stops your strength.
00:59It just takes everything out of you.
01:00Four and a half hours in a plane, people are just beating down.
01:02They're just ready to get off that death tube.
01:04You know, people are all nicely dressed and everything,
01:06and they're holding on to jackets.
01:08Their hair's all messed up.
01:10The plane is a mess.
01:12The plane looks like a tornado hit it.
01:14Yep.
01:15It's amazing what can happen in four and a half hours.
01:18But very cool.
01:19See, as soon as you come flying in Salt Lake,
01:22you see all the mountains and everything,
01:23and people are skiing year-round there.
01:26I've never been to Utah.
01:28Yeah, it was my first time.
01:30Been to Colorado.
01:31Been to Colorado, but I don't think I've ever been to Utah.
01:34But I'll say the first thing you notice,
01:36very clean city, as you could probably imagine.
01:39You boys want to go skiing with me?
01:41Very clean city.
01:44I didn't smell weed once.
01:46I was there for four days.
01:47Really?
01:48Not once.
01:49Very clean, very safe.
01:51I was talking to the Uber driver, and he's like,
01:54yeah, you can walk around here morning, day, or night.
01:57Very safe.
01:58Yeah.
01:58Very safe city.
01:59I mean, there's some homeless people, they don't bother you.
02:02It's not like in Santa Monica, where they'll accost you
02:04and just basically tell you to give you everything you got in your wallet.
02:09So the city was really nice.
02:11It was cool.
02:12Food was okay.
02:13Didn't have any extraordinary restaurant options.
02:15What about the hotel?
02:16Hotel?
02:18We're not real Marriott people.
02:19We're more like Hyatt people.
02:22But my buddy, one of the dads on the team,
02:25he always books the hotels at a good rate.
02:28He's a Marriott guy, so we always go with him.
02:30He gets an extra room.
02:31And so I guess I'm not familiar with Marriott,
02:34but I guess AC is, have you ever heard of AC hotels?
02:37They're affiliated with Marriott.
02:38It's kind of a higher-end Marriott.
02:40Kind of poofy.
02:41Never poofy.
02:42A little bougie.
02:44A little bit.
02:45Okay.
02:45Nothing extraordinary.
02:46It was a nice hotel downtown.
02:49A lot of hotels downtown.
02:51The convention center, you know, nice, whatever.
02:54Kind of standard.
02:55That's where we were most of the time.
02:57Could you walk to the convention center?
02:59Right across the street.
02:59Oh, okay.
03:00Right across the street.
03:01That's perfect.
03:01A block away.
03:02Worked out.
03:02The weather was kind of weird.
03:04It was kind of rainy a couple of days,
03:06which kind of put a little bit of a damper on it.
03:09But, yeah, just very cool town.
03:12I don't think I'll ever be back.
03:13How many teams were in the tournament?
03:15Oh, jeez.
03:16I don't know that.
03:16A couple hundred?
03:17Oh, yeah.
03:18Yeah, yeah.
03:18Oh, yeah.
03:19And, you know, in our division, I think there might have been four.
03:22We played in the open division.
03:23The girls went four and four.
03:25Our star player was hurt for the second day.
03:28Hurt us.
03:29I think we went one and two that day.
03:32So it wasn't a great tournament.
03:33It wasn't a great outcome, but we won our last two matches.
03:35Felt good about it on the way back, so that was good.
03:39It's just fun to be with the girls.
03:40One girl, she's going to the University of Cincinnati to play volleyball,
03:43and this is her last tournament.
03:47She's not even going to play in nationals with us because she has to report.
03:49Oh, wow.
03:50So this is the difference, right?
03:51You go to Cincinnati.
03:53What conference are they in now?
03:54I can't even keep track.
03:55Big 12.
03:56Big 12.
03:57She's a graduating senior.
03:59My daughter's, most of the girls are juniors.
04:01She was eligible to play in U17 because of her age.
04:05Right.
04:06So she's going to the University of Cincinnati.
04:08The volleyball team reports like June 1 or whatever it is.
04:12In the Ivy League, you report like two weeks before school starts.
04:17Right.
04:17So it's just a big difference between a Power 5 conference and a conference.
04:24Mid-major.
04:25Mid-major.
04:25You know, you just don't report three months early.
04:27So they're getting three months extra work in.
04:30Right, right.
04:30And they'll be taking summer classes and everything,
04:32so she's not going to be able to attend nationals.
04:34So it was kind of a sentimental thing.
04:36It was her last tournament with us, and she's an absolute stud.
04:39So your daughter, does she have fun?
04:41Your daughter had fun out there?
04:42Oh, of course.
04:42Just being with the girls.
04:44They always have fun.
04:44But just, you know, different.
04:45It's a little disappointing because they wanted, you know, to finish higher.
04:48Yeah.
04:49You know, they're very driven girls.
04:52But overall, good tournament, good times, good people.
04:56What's the next big tournament?
04:58Nationals.
04:59Oh, it's nationals.
04:59Yeah, it's not for like a month away.
05:01It's kind of a long break.
05:02Was that in Florida?
05:03This year it will be in Indianapolis.
05:05Oh, Indianapolis.
05:05Every year it's different.
05:07Right.
05:07So you get to hit St. Elmo's.
05:09Yeah.
05:10Go back to St. Elmo's.
05:11I've been to Indianapolis too many times.
05:13It's kind of boring city to me, but whatever.
05:15Whoop-y-doo.
05:16They dump a bunch of horseradish into their shrimp cocktail.
05:19That's all they do.
05:20They offer you like navy bean soup.
05:22It's not that great.
05:23That place is overrated.
05:24It's not that great.
05:25Never going back.
05:26All right, we were there once, and we didn't have a great meal.
05:28I mean, it was fine.
05:29It was just a little overhyped.
05:31If we went again, it might be better.
05:33You might be right.
05:34It might be better.
05:35Because we were there for Super Bowl week.
05:37There's a billion people there.
05:38I understand.
05:38My steak was overcooked.
05:39They were under a lot of pressure.
05:41They were under a lot of pressure.
05:42They were rushing all the food out.
05:44Steven Tyler's in the restaurant.
05:46All the Fox dudes were in the restaurant.
05:47Steven Tyler was there.
05:49Tyler Lautner from Twilight in the restaurant.
05:52Michael Irvin was there.
05:53There was a lot of celebrities there.
05:55There were.
05:55There were.
05:55A lot of luminaries.
05:56I didn't see a couple celebrities.
05:58As soon as I got-
05:59Celebrities in Utah?
06:00Of course.
06:01Because you've got to remember.
06:02Yeah, because they're girls are playing.
06:04They're all ex-basketball guys.
06:05They're ex-MOB guys.
06:07Wasn't Mike Frabel there for counseling?
06:09Was he in Utah?
06:10He was definitely-
06:10For some reason, I read something about Utah.
06:13He was definitely snapped walking through-
06:15He was in an airport.
06:16He was in the-
06:16The Utah airport.
06:17He was in Salt Lake City.
06:18Buying a hoodie for his wife.
06:20Oh, really?
06:20That's interesting.
06:21Or somebody.
06:21I didn't see him.
06:22I was going to say, how do you know it was for his wife?
06:23Yeah, I don't know who it was for him.
06:25As soon as I got there, I think I texted Drab, we saw Mike Bibby on the street corner.
06:29He was right in front of our hotel.
06:30Oh, really?
06:30He's not as jacked as he was when I saw him a couple years ago in Vegas.
06:34He's heavier, though.
06:34He's heavier.
06:35Yeah, yeah.
06:35He's a little bloated, but he was like a cartoon character when I saw him three or four years ago.
06:41I'll always remember him as a wizard.
06:42Yeah.
06:43Always.
06:43Did he even play one game?
06:45I don't even know if he suited up.
06:46I know he's traded here.
06:48I don't think he ever suited.
06:48I think he's coaching now.
06:49Somebody said, is he coaching at Sacramento State or something?
06:52How would I know?
06:53So we played his daughter's team, a very good team, like one of the top teams in the country.
06:58Yeah.
06:58We lost to them.
06:59We played them tough, but lost to them.
07:01I always see Jared Jeffries at these events.
07:03Okay.
07:04He's always there, so he's obviously got a daughter who plays, or multiple daughters.
07:07Well, he's what?
07:08He's about 6'9", right?
07:09So how tall is his daughter?
07:10I don't know.
07:11I don't know.
07:11I didn't see his daughter, but I just always see him.
07:13You always remind him about the Terps beating his Hoosiers in the NCAA tournament?
07:17I don't talk at all.
07:18Yes, Bibby, by the way, is at Sac State.
07:19Sac State, right?
07:20He's been there for, I think this is year two.
07:22So, Drabby, you'll get a kick out of this.
07:24And he played two games for the Wizards.
07:25Oh, he did suit up.
07:26I told you.
07:27I'll always remember him as a Wiz.
07:28So one of the moms was at a Starbucks getting coffee, and she's talking to another mom,
07:34and she's like, I don't know, she asked him where she was from, and she asked where
07:37you were from, and she goes, oh, my daughter's here.
07:39And then she was, they were talking about the NFL draft, because the NFL draft was occurring.
07:42And she goes, oh, yeah, my son's going to be in the NBA draft.
07:46It's kind of, not in a braggadoo.
07:47She said, in the most unassuming way you could possibly say it, yeah, yeah, my son's going
07:52to be in the upcoming end.
07:54And she said, my daughter's playing in the tournament.
07:56Okay.
07:57AJ DeBonsa's mom and sister was playing at the event.
08:02How cool is that?
08:03He is the NBA draft.
08:05I thought you were going to throw out a name, like, might be in the first round.
08:09No, no, no.
08:09You're talking about the guy who's going to go number one overall.
08:10No, no, AJ DeBonsa's mom, who I didn't meet, but the other mom met, and she said she was
08:15the most unassuming thing, and she just said it sort of matter-of-factly, yeah, my son's
08:18going to be in the NBA draft, and, you know, whatever.
08:21Right, right.
08:21And then she Googled who it was, and he was just laughing.
08:25So the sister was playing in the event.
08:27Right, the top pick.
08:28He'll be the top pick in the draft.
08:30Right.
08:31Well, very cool.
08:32Wearing a Wizards uniform.
08:33Hopefully he's coming here.
08:34And you're back with the whole Commander's Draft behind you.
08:37You got a lot of Commander's Nation upset with you with your tweets, calling Sonny Styles
08:42a project.
08:43I do stand by that.
08:44I do think he's a bit of a project.
08:46It's funny.
08:46If you go to the NFL website, and you know how they had all their draft sections, and
08:53you go right, no, not even grades, pre-draft, like, you know, and even after the draft.
08:57It said the projection, one to two years start, like a starter in one to two years.
09:04They didn't say, like, day one starter, like they did other guys.
09:08Now, listen.
09:09I would be surprised if he's not a day one starter.
09:11You would think.
09:12Yeah.
09:13I mean, I would be surprised.
09:14I think he's probably going to be very good for them.
09:17I just wouldn't take it a safer pick in Caleb Downs, but it's fine.
09:19I loved the pick of the receiver after doing more research on Antonio Williams.
09:25You like A-Dub?
09:26You like that guy?
09:27I love the way that guy wiggles when he runs his routes.
09:29No, we had Dave Richard on yesterday, and he said he loved that pick, too, for the
09:33Well, the fantasy guys seem to love him.
09:34I'm not sure why, but I think he's going to be an awesome piece.
09:39Separation.
09:39He's a great route runner, and people are downplaying speed.
09:43It's so funny now that a 4-4-1 guy is not considered fast.
09:48Like, 4-4-1 is super fast, guys.
09:51It's not 4-2.
09:52That's super fast.
09:54So, I really like the pick.
09:56Yeah, I mean, when we took calls yesterday, we asked about that particular pick, and a
10:01lot of fans were just bitter they didn't get a bigger guy.
10:04Yeah, that's what I wanted to initially, but when you get over it, you look into it, and
10:07you go, wow, I can see why they got him.
10:09And we kind of went through some of the great receivers in the league, and not every great
10:12receiver is 6'3".
10:13I mean, a lot of them are 5'11", 6'4".
10:16If you look at what Ben Johnson did in Detroit, there's a lot of similarities there with some
10:21guys there, so I really like that.
10:24So, you know how Leo Chennault was my favorite free agent signing?
10:29It wasn't OA or some of these other guys?
10:31That's your favorite draft pick.
10:31That's my favorite draft pick.
10:32The Williams draft pick.
10:33Well, I said yesterday, and I talked about it for a good 10 minutes because I was watching
10:36this video with Jaden and De'Ambi Brown and McLaurin working out in L.A.
10:41De'Ambi Brown's my favorite receiver now.
10:44He is?
10:45Yeah.
10:45He's got the best.
10:46He's funny.
10:47He was just likable in the video.
10:48Oh, he's very likable.
10:49He's funny.
10:49But just the way he looked working out, man, he looks so good.
10:53And I understand, you're not going against defenses, but I'm rooting for him now.
10:58I always root for him.
10:59He's got a guy.
11:00I got a guy.
11:01I'm glad.
11:01De'Ambi's my guy.
11:02He's got a role in this offense, for sure.
11:03I hope.
11:04I hope he does.
11:04Later in the program, we're going to check in with Paul Timoni, president of baseball
11:08operations for the Washington Nationals.
11:10They were blanked by the Mets last night.
11:11Remember, you talked about the odds.
11:13That was the reason.
11:13That's the reason.
11:14The odds.
11:15I hope he didn't throw cash on the Nats.
11:16It was a bit of a pitching mismatch.
11:19It was.
11:19And Zach Littell, he's, look, only four of the eight runs were earned because they had
11:24another huge error.
11:26Which, but he's, and I'm not going to tell Paul Timoni this, Zach Littell's got to either
11:32be cut or down to the pen.
11:34Well, we'll talk to Paul Timoni at nine o'clock.
11:37Don't want to miss that.
11:38Also, we'll get in the NBA playoffs with Antonio Daniels.
11:41He played here in Washington, 13-year NBA vet.
11:44We'll talk to him about what's going on in the first round.
11:47There was at least one closeout last night.
11:51So we will get into that.
11:52There was a couple surprises.
11:53Coming up at 925, we're the junkies on the fan.
11:56We'll get into that.
