00:00Chris Russell has entered the chat, provocative as always.
00:03And Walker doesn't like it.
00:05Walker ran Russell out of here.
00:07He said, tell him to get out.
00:08Like Angel Hernandez ejecting a batter who was arguing with him.
00:13He told the aquarium on television, Russell's beating up Jeff right now.
00:16Walker's like, get out of here!
00:18Chris is trying to disrupt our program, and Jeff is standing up for us.
00:22I appreciate that, Jeffrey.
00:24All right.
00:25Monty Coleman.
00:26Monty Coleman.
00:27Son of a gun, man.
00:28So I want you to be able to reflect on him, but Metal Chris just dropped a pretty interesting nugget
00:34on Monty Coleman to us.
00:36Chris, do you care to share that to the world?
00:38Yeah, sure.
00:38When I was a kid, my mom worked for State Farm and was his insurance agent.
00:43Like when you had like an agent, you know?
00:46Isn't that just a small world story?
00:48That's like our only famous client or like, you know, like everybody else is whoever.
00:51Was he, I assume, a nice man?
00:53I never met him, but he seemed, I mean, we were all Skins fans anyway, so she was just like,
00:57that's so cool.
00:57Like, you know, but.
00:58You know, I hate to be this guy, but hey, how about that?
01:03I thought it was, I thought it was a cool anecdote.
01:05So I will defend it.
01:06But don't you, I mean, I'm sure you have met tons of people that have Redskins slash commanders connections and
01:16people you know.
01:17Sure.
01:17You know, I mean, like if you live in this town for long enough.
01:20Especially if you live out in Loudoun.
01:21Yeah.
01:22And, you know, if you live in this town long enough, you're always going to bump into the players.
01:26And thankfully, most of the interactions are positive.
01:30Unless you're driving next to Albert Hainsworth, then maybe it's not so positive.
01:34But that said, yeah, Monty Coleman, to me, was like death taxes in Monty Coleman.
01:42Death taxes in 51, prowling the middle of that defense.
01:47I remember when Monty Coleman finally got cut, it was like, oh my God, because he was so dependable as
01:59the glue of that defense.
02:02And a three-time Super Bowl champion, elegant player, wasn't necessarily flashy per se, although he had some pretty bomb
02:11games.
02:11I saw a clip of, like, his best game ever was when Pettibone was picking up the remnants of his
02:19one year as head coach.
02:20And he had like three TFLs, three sacks, and a FUMM six.
02:23But that's just Monty Coleman for you.
02:25So, Monty Coleman, to me, represented the kind of player that every team and every city has.
02:33Where everyone there knows about him and they know how good he was.
02:37But outside of the immediate metro, I would argue most people that are not Commander Redskin fans don't know of
02:44Monty Coleman.
02:45But they should, because he was a hell of a football player, seemingly nice guy.
02:50And like a lot of guys who are great players, JP, if they don't then enter the media ecosystem, they
02:57kind of get forgotten about.
02:59And Monty went off and did his own thing.
03:02I don't know what he did, but I never really saw or heard from Monty Coleman once he stopped playing.
03:09We had him on the first week of our show.
03:12Because he was like, all right, who are some old players you'd like me to get?
03:15And I was like, I'd love to talk to Monty Coleman.
03:17And the first week, we're going into our sixth football season this fall.
03:21So, it was 21, right?
03:23It was still kind of COVID-ish then.
03:27And we had Monty on then.
03:28And I think he was coaching back in Arkansas.
03:30I think he was living back in Arkansas.
03:33The thing that I find so remarkable with Monty Coleman is B has always talked about his athleticism, that he
03:40was a gunner on special teams.
03:42And at that size, I mean, to be a gunner, that 240, to be a gunner is pretty crazy.
03:46Also, a starting linebacker.
03:48Right.
03:48To be playing specials.
03:50Chris Kerwin, photog extraordinaire.
03:54Last night on Channel 4, we ran, you know, a little tribute to Monty, and he dug through old highlights.
03:59Oh, God.
04:00And found, they ran a reverse kickoff return to him.
04:06Isn't that crazy to think about?
04:07I don't doubt it, though.
04:08He ran like a greyhound.
04:09I think he ran in the 4-4s.
04:11Yeah.
04:12He was amazing.
04:13And that's part of why I like the Styles pick.
04:15I think there's a lot of echoes of Monty Coleman in Styles.
04:17You look at his career, 16 years.
04:20It's just unbelievable.
04:21And all of the best years of Redskins football.
04:24Yes.
04:25Like, he was there.
04:25The Camelot years, he was the constant.
04:28And 16 years, second most snaps ever as a Redskin to only, of course, Daryl Green.
04:34And nobody's going to break that record.
04:36In 1980, his second year in the league, he had 118 tackles.
04:44This is crazy to me.
04:46In 1984, and maybe you know what happened.
04:49I don't know what happened.
04:51But clearly, he was thrust into a different role.
04:54Maybe there was an injury or something.
04:56Yeah.
04:56He had 10 1β2 sacks in 1984.
04:59The rest of his career, never topped four.
05:01Yeah.
05:02But I'm guessing they needed, or I guess in 93, which would have been Pettibone, right?
05:07Yep.
05:08He had six sacks for Richie.
05:10And then his last year in Washington was, I think, Norv's first year in 94.
05:16I will text my boy Andy Pauley, who would remember better what happened in 84 to have him pop in
05:22terms of sacks.
05:22But I know this, if a particular defensive coordinator or just whoever decides we want to utilize him more doing
05:29this, he was good enough that he would do that for you and do it very well.
05:33So, obviously, they gave him more chances to make a run at the quarterback.
05:36And like I said, he ran so well that I'm sure he surprised a lot of quarterbacks with his closing
05:42speed.
05:43That year, Dexter led the team with 13 1β2 sacks, and Monty was second with 10 1β2.
05:50Then Daryl Grant had eight.
05:51Charles Mann had seven.
05:53So, like, in my mind, when I see that statistic pop like that, I'm like, I wonder if Dexter got
05:58hurt that year or something.
06:00But it looks like they all played.
06:02Yeah.
06:02I mean, Mann played 16, Dexter played 15, Grant played 15.
06:07It's just, to me, it shows the versatility of what was an incredible player and the longevity and to be
06:14there for the entirety of the greatness, right?
06:18Like, there's just not many.
06:19That's why when he finally didn't make the roster, it was a big deal.
06:23Like, oh, man.
06:24It finally, you know, the Turk finally came.
06:27That was 95, right?
06:27Yeah, the Turk finally came.
06:28And he was 38 years old.
06:29Yeah, Turk finally came for Monty Coleman.
06:31I can't believe it.
06:32Just a leader, a great football player, good man, 68.
06:39It reminds me as I'm 58 in less than a month here or a little over a month, the lights
06:46start going out on your favorite players one by one.
06:50And I hate that.
06:51And so many of the brightest lights of the Camelot years of the Redskins are still shining and still in
07:00good shape and are active.
07:01And you hear from them.
07:03They're involved in the media.
07:04I don't want to think, JP, about those lights going out.
07:07Absolutely.
07:08Well said.
07:08In the meantime, I'm not saying that I'm going to maintain groundγͺγγ lid.
07:08But you're going to be able to come out of size and come out of size and look.
