World Health Summit Regional Meeting for Africa opens in Nairobi
Transcript
00:06New data reveals that over 600 million people across Africa still lack access to essential
00:12health services, a deficit that is forcing a radical rethink of how medicine is delivered.
00:19Despite carrying nearly a quarter of the global disease burden, Africa still operates with
00:24less than 3% of the global health workforce, a gap that is reportedly costing lives daily.
00:31Despite the dedication and resilience of our health workers, the density of our workforce
00:37remains significantly below global benchmarks.
00:43This imbalance is neither sustainable nor tenable.
00:47It calls for a decisive and deliberate shift from fragmented, piecemeal interventions
00:56to a comprehensive and system-wide transformation.
01:01Currently, only 15% of Africans have access to quality primary health care.
01:07Delegates say this limited chance at wellness calls for system integration, moving away from
01:13isolated clinics toward a connected network.
01:17It's very significant for Africa in these times of a changing global health ecosystem to
01:23raise its voice, to show its strength and to take initiative.
01:27We need to signal to Africa, to the many countries in Africa but also to the entire world that health
01:36is still a number one priority and it has to be addressed by any country in a way where the
01:45countries take sovereignty
01:47but work together very intensively and that's the main message from here.
01:51The United Nations has formally pledged its unwavering support for Africa's journey toward medical sovereignty.
01:58The UN system through WHO, UNICEF, UNFPA, UNDP and our partners at Africa CDC is committed to working
02:09alongside African governments and institutions in building the health systems this continent deserves.
02:17Delegates are pushing for the adoption of telemedicine and AI within the healthcare systems.
02:22This move is being driven by the rapid adoption of mobile phones already in the pockets of two out of
02:29three people on the continent.
02:31Experts are optimistic that by streamlining systems the 50% of Africans currently left behind will gain access to the
02:40quality primary care they deserve.
02:42The challenge remains massive but as the digital and physical worlds merge, experts and policy makers are trying to ensure
02:50that 600 million people are no longer left waiting.
