00:10Speaking at the African Union Health Summit in Ghana,
00:14Executive Director Winim Biannima said African governments must take greater responsibility
00:19for financing their own health systems after major donors,
00:23including the United States and several European countries, reduced foreign assistance.
00:28Biannima says UN AIDS lost around a quarter of its funding last year,
00:35warning that the continent can no longer rely on external support.
00:39She urged governments to reprioritise spending, invest in local pharmaceutical production,
00:45and work towards what she called health sovereignty.
00:49Sub-Saharan Africa remains the region hardest hit by HIV,
00:53accounting for nearly two-thirds of people living with the virus worldwide,
00:56and 60% of new infections last year.
