Two people have been killed, and three others have been seriously injured in a plane crash at Parafield airport in Adelaide’s north.

00:01Shortly after 2pm today, what is known as a DA42 four-seat twin-engine plane took off from Parafield.
00:09Shortly after take-off, it has tragically crashed into Hangar 54 at the airport.
00:16Upon collision, that is obviously significant injuries and fire and damage,
00:23two persons on board that plane have died, tragically.
00:28At this time, with other people in the Hangar at the time,
00:31we have got other staff members who have had to be taken to hospital.
00:36We have two people, as mentioned, who have died.
00:40We have one in a life-threatening condition at the Royal Adelaide Hospital,
00:43two in a serious condition at the RA, one with minor injuries at the RA,
00:48four persons at Lyon McEwan with smoke intolation,
00:50and a further two other persons were rushed to the Modbury Hospital with smoke intolation as well.
00:55The Air Traffic Safety Board will be attending here first thing tomorrow morning
01:00to assist in the investigation of this matter.
01:03At this point in time, I can confirm a pathologist is on scene,
01:07along with major crash staff.
01:10This is subject to a full investigation, and a cordon will remain in place overnight
01:14for at least 24 hours as the matter is investigated.
01:19These, as mentioned, tragic situation for both the pilot and the passenger.
01:24Also for the local parafield community, which is close in this environment here.
01:29On arrival, firefighters were faced with really thick black smoke, intense flames.
01:34These flames were further intensified by a significant amount of fuel that was actually inside the hangar,
01:41and also the fact that the aircraft had impacted the fire hydrant system,
01:46rendering the sprinkler system out of action,
01:50but also causing a lack of water for the firefighters to deal with.
01:55There were a number of students inside that were assisted out of the building by MFS.
02:00Obviously, the hangar has sustained significant damage.
02:04There were five aircraft stored inside the hangar.
02:07Three of those were impacted, but the other aircraft and a number outside of the air side were all protected.
02:17There were 57 firefighters attended in total,
02:20and a smoke advice was issued just to notify the local area community members of the dangers of the smoke.
