01:37Wash is one person who's in the building. South West
01:37Idaho. In the
01:39untamed and historically gold rich foothills of the Owahe Mountains, Freddie and Wong get
01:47an urgent SOS from rookie miner, Brett Allen, who has staked his livelihood on his first plane.
01:55this one's definitely different they had an auto body business that they had hard times with he's
02:01taking what he's got left and throwing it into this gold mine but he's quite a greenhorn he
02:07doesn't really know the gold industry well really this is kind of a rescue where not only is it a
02:12rescue but we're kind of starting from ground zero yeah this is a great opportunity to help
02:18somebody right at the beginning of their gold mining career how we doing we hope we're at the
02:24right mine I'm assuming we are I know welcome to the Allen mine Juan hey how was your travels
02:32we're getting our trucks in here that's for darn sure how long have you been mining in here exactly
02:37last year we came in did some testing up in here with some smaller equipment and we just got running
02:43about three weeks ago so who do you have for crude I got my wife Michelle and then I got
02:49my son Joshua
02:49and then I got daughter Chelsea coming up here in the next couple of days
02:56when I was eight nine years old my dad bought a claim about six or seven miles from here
03:04the first time I ever saw the gold show up in the pan I was addicted man it's an addiction
03:10that you
03:10never forget when we were kids it was really a great experience as I got older I saw my dad
03:19getting really addicted to the gold growing up there's some bittersweet moments between Brett's dad
03:25and him seeing it starting to take the money away from the family watching a constant feud between my
03:34mother and father over gold Brett's dad mind these mountains in the 80s but never made it rich I'd said
03:45I'm done with this and didn't want to be a part of it anymore so I started the auto body
03:51business with
03:51my wife Michelle back in 2004 Brett ran the auto body business for 20 years until it fell on hard

04:00bringing back thoughts of gold so the business back home it just kept draining us dry I knew I
04:08needed to move on to something different I thought going back to work for somebody else didn't settle
04:14good with me and so I'm like okay why not give it an opportunity I do believe Brett has a
04:20gold fever but I
04:22try not to mention that to him he always dreams big and I like that but sometimes after roping back
04:29down okay this is what we can do this is maybe what we can't do my dad didn't teach me
04:35geology and how
04:36all that works so I have absolutely no clue he wants to not make the same mistakes his dad did
04:45I need to
04:47find a way to bury that negative hatchet that's been in my life for so many years what do you
04:56have invested in this so far so far we've got about 45 50,000 okay have you been able to
05:04recover any gold
05:05yeah I mean it's not as much as I would like to see obviously never is in the three weeks
05:11we've gotten
05:11about close to five grams how many yards have you ran ran 130 yards so far in the last three
05:23weeks
05:23and you've only got five grams yeah yeah that's not real great no not at all
05:30what do you need a day to survive in here well we're hoping we can survive with about a half
05:35ounce
05:35a day hopefully this will rescue us a lot of people go gold mining because they want less
05:42stress and end up with more stress right yeah yeah I think the hardest lesson to learn with running the
05:47business and knowing how to shut it down is the walking around feeling like you failed your family
05:57so I don't want to do that again I got to do this right this this is make or break
06:01for us for sure
06:02so yeah we're reaching out to you guys to help us get started on that right foot the first time
06:07so and
06:08we won't pull any punches yeah if we think there's not enough gold here then we'll tell you right off
06:13yeah you know it's gonna be kind of a new one for Freddie and I because typically we come into

06:17situation where you know people have been mining there for years or you know at least couple months
06:21you know so this is pretty much a fresh startup it is well you want to do a test run

06:55first bucket line the four-hour test begins as Brett feeds dirt into his hopper aided by vibration
07:06it drops through grizzly bars which should sieve out any large rocks and waste material the pay is then
07:16washed by the spinning 12-foot trommel before running into the six-foot sluice where the gold is caught
07:27looking at all the organics on the spray bar yeah trying to get the rocks out of the grizzly with
07:47the
07:47weeds so far there's been a lot of downtime because he has to keep on jumping out of the excavator

07:53clear the grid finding it up watch yourself
08:07these tough times recently have made it hard for us to get out of that hole that we're in right

08:13and I just want to see my parents smile more and things to be better
08:25he's not hopping very hard right now yeah I was thinking that too a hopper's vibrator isn't strong
08:33enough to shake the pay into the wash plant he's got such a small water system here it's selten up

09:19right now the material he's running it's no wonder he's only got you know five grams of gold out of

09:31because this is pure crap for gold right here that slip rock could have been coming over the top of
09:36this for years oh it has been yeah the material being processed is mostly soil that slipped down off the
09:44mountainside what he's doing is he doing a test for us that really isn't a test I mean I go

09:54sand and get as much gold as they'll probably get out of this stuff let's end it right now hey

10:25we got a lot of problems going on you know luckily you're only three weeks into it so it's

10:42you know I was feeling confident in the beginning but after the the test run today I'm really nervous
10:47about what uh Freddie one are going to have to say we're going to take this all back and get

10:52up and uh see what comes out of it my first impression of this family is they need to get

10:59because they're in a tough place right now Brett's running material that he should not be running
11:05and it's multiple problems with what he's putting through there number one I don't believe there's
11:11very much gold in it number two it's full of silt and the sluice is plugged up we got our
11:18work cut out
11:19for us for sure you know watching him dig some pay out and everything else you can just tell by
11:24what
11:24he's doing that is just an experience I'm hoping that Freddie and I can get enough done here because
11:29you know honestly from what he tells us he's got all his eggs in this basket this is
11:35his last chance you got a second Brett yeah coming up see those rounded gravels in the wall perfect
11:47material everything you'd look for in a gold mine that's amazing

12:24I knew the gold ray was going to be bad but uh honestly I didn't think it'd be that bad
12:29that's that's it's not even a hundredth of an ounce between 20 and 30 dollars worth of gold well you

12:37help that's for sure no pulling any punches but you were making about every mistake out there that you
12:44could make okay you're a businessman so a gold mine is a business you know you can't let it be
12:49emotional a
12:50a full week's mining would cost Brett's operation nearly a thousand dollars in fuel alone but the pay
12:58in yesterday's test would mean a loss of over 200 dollars every week at the end of the day it
13:05has to
13:06be financially feasible it's gut-wrenching standing there with my wife and my son want to make sure
13:18that you've got their backs and not failing them in chasing a pipe dream it makes me feel like that
13:27what we're doing is wasting our time and I don't want to have my dad go through that I'm a
13:35little
13:35nervous about the whole situation because you can't just learn how to mine overnight Brett has a little
13:39experience when he was a kid but that didn't prepare him for where he is right now how's it going

13:47how's it doing hey we came up with some ideas it's going to be some tough love along the way

13:53showing you some of this stuff that we think you were doing incorrectly not everything is pay you
13:58know just because you might find traces of gold in it doesn't mean it's pay okay one of the big
14:03things that we really want to do is teach you go in there get all the overburden off and then
14:06we get
14:07down to the pay layer another thing we watch you outside multiple times with a crowbar cleaning those
14:13grizzly bars out right what we want to do is we want to build a set of lifter bars like
14:17grizzlies but
14:18they actually go underneath and they actually hydraulically lift up and they'll push everything out of the
14:22grizzlies no way yeah that's cool yeah fantastic and we wanted to add more shake to your eccentric
14:28it needs to be you know fairly violent all the time and we only ran two hours right your water
14:35was
14:35almost to the point where you needed to shut down so we want to put a silt dam in to
14:40make that silt
14:41drop out before it gets to your pump that makes a good point there
14:50to eliminate the organic material and rocks that clog brett's hopper one will build a one-of-a-kind
14:58hydraulic rake system to help clear this waste material from the grizzly bars
15:06to increase vibration on the shaker deck new weights will be added to the eccentric to boost the flow of
15:14pay
15:17and a silt dam will be installed to reduce soil suspended in the water brett uses to process pay
15:28and most urgently freddie will take bread on a prospect of the claim to identify better pay
15:37so we figured up rough numbers and it's going to be around four thousand dollars for the parts the
15:43steel that's just the materials right and then not now but if you guys get back to the point where
15:51you're actually making money it's being successful what we would like to see a year from now is
15:55announce a piece well to me i think it's worth the investment to start off right okay we genuinely
16:01want to help you guys yeah because you know at the end of the day it is your last chance

16:05talking about this is the hell mary you want to go in there and do the best you can for
16:09you and your
16:09family and we want the same right right well we'll get out there you guys are good sounds like a
16:15plan
16:15we're so excited to see the outcome of this the biggest thing in my past was watching my father
16:22gamble too many things so we are very concerned about what we're getting engaged into but we believe
16:29in the long run it's going to be worth it I'd like to continue the gold mining as a family
16:35obviously our time is money I'm hoping it'll be a good outcome why don't we pull a brett's hopper
16:48off and take it up top yeah and then get in there and start prospecting Freddie and Juan's first task
16:55for the day remove the hopper and transported 300 feet up out of the creek we're going to put the
17:05hopper on that little trailer and we're going to tow it up to where our trailers and trucks are
17:08that way we can fabricate everything that we need on it up top tap her up brett

18:07to get ready for her wedding that's coming up in a week dad gets to see daughter get married very

18:15my thoughts on my dad seeing him go from doing something he's done for as long as I've been alive
18:2128 years and seeing him do something massively different is a little concerning I've heard him
18:29talk about his dad and the experiences he had growing up so it surprised me when he was like I'm
18:34gonna go dig in the dirt I'm like okay why but I think ultimately it is financial and emotional I
18:43just
18:43hope he's seeing everything properly watch your hands yeah we're good it went all right so far so
18:58good but we haven't got it out of here yet Freddie and Juan must now transport the 1500 pound load
19:07through the creek and up to six miles of rugged terrain using only the ATV you guys want to go
19:16ahead of us
19:16and just kind of follow my pace yeah we'll make it happen guys all right let's do it
19:29there's one creek crossing that's got me concerned down here

20:01I'll push out the winch off grid on the Idaho claim of greenhorn miner Brett Allen must be found
20:09Freddie and Juan faced their first challenge transporting the hopper uphill to their service
20:16trucks I'd go up another 10 feet that way you're not on a hill okay so I'm gonna be in
20:23low gear okay
20:24Juan turn your wheels that way a little on your call 1-0 go go ahead go there we go
20:36the rocks and the
20:38steepness of the entry and exit make it a little bit tough with that weight it's always nice to have
20:44it back up holy one made it good driving thank you sir I'm gonna go back down to the mine
20:58with the
21:00hopper safely delivered yeah I'm gonna get going up here Freddie heads back down to the mine site with
21:06Brett to inspect the cut while Juan jumps into the hopper upgrade with Josh are you gonna be able to

21:13me for the day yeah yeah perfect well I got a couple things I need you to do I'm really

21:18that Freddie comes up with something because honestly without better ground all this is for
21:22not put the hook on okay that's good in the first test run organic material and rocks repeatedly block
21:34up Brett's hopper what we're gonna do Josh we're gonna cut all the Grizzlies out we're gonna put all
21:38new ones in and then we'll actually start building the fingers that go in between them to be able to
21:42clear them out yeah Juan first cuts out the Grizzlies okay your time to shine
21:56before Josh smooths the old welds now let's say we do find some decent ground do you want to stay

22:04here with your dad and run this place yeah we're looking for a fresh start from our business so yeah

22:09it's just not working for us we like to work for ourselves and as a family yeah it's really what
22:15my dad wants to do although you got to do a little bit of everything if you want to mine

22:20are teaching those valuable tools to us hopefully you take it to heart and just keep on expanding on
22:24that because you'll need it before you set a plan up you always figure your cut out six miles upstream
22:38from the mine site Freddie and Brett worked the cut the pressure is on to find good ground otherwise the
22:48fixes will count for nothing I can tell you came in here and set your plan up and then started
22:52digging
22:52correct 100 percent another important thing you spent all that time digging that and sluicing that
22:59right that sandy stuff it's garbage we only found maybe two or three colors in the sandy material that's
23:05nothing I know people get excited when they see gold especially when they're new to mining and they don't
23:11know that they're throwing away ten dollars to make ten cents one rule of thumb and modern mining for
23:18gold is move it once sometimes make money move it twice you may break even move it three times you
23:25go
23:25broke fast with my dad I remember it just dig hole after hole after hole I never really understood his
23:34management why he did what he did Freddie's explaining that to me and the reason why we're doing it would
23:40have
23:40been nice to have learned that when I was a kid for sure but inexperience is a game killer what
23:48we
23:48want to do is dig as deep as we can and once we dig down then I want to start
23:52testing that I don't
23:55want to be chasing a pipe dream so being able to get in and assess and validate that we've got

24:00valuable claim that's important to us since 1863 more than 1 million ounces of gold was pulled out of
24:12these hills worth nearly five billion dollars at today's prices to have a chance of finding any gold
24:23the old-timers missed Freddie must first dig out the worthless overburn that's alive she wants to dig in
24:34that dirt you can't dig in the dirt that's their job hey I got her you got a second Brett

24:44see where there's those three boulders you see those rounded gravels in the wall seeing it yeah that's what
24:49we're looking for perfect shingle compacted material everything you'd look for in a gold mine wow that's
24:58amazing that's what we want to see that stuff that's been reworked by the stream system keeps going got it
25:03it's really good film pretty good Freddie said when you see big rocks like that they usually assign us some
25:12great gold I'm really excited that's giving me my confidence back perfect high above the creek so
25:36right now I'm just test fitting it Juan fabricates the rake for his one-of-a-kind hydraulic grizzly
25:42system this rods actually going to go towards the bottom of the pan and the cylinder is going to be
25:47underneath the pan so as the cylinder extends it'll push this rod forward push the rakes forward and get
25:53all that material off the hopper a hydraulic cylinder will generate 10,000 pounds worth of force and push
26:02clear any waste material blocking up the grizzlies all right well let's clean these up you can drill
26:11this one out since you're the master driller now yep that'll work all right pull it towards you
26:26you know it's tough though you go from a business that you know to a business that you really don't
26:30know and honestly I'm not trying to discourage you but mining is a hard business to be in I just
26:36want
26:36to see this site really work out it doesn't have necessarily to do with how hard you work you can
26:41work your butt off but if there's no gold in the ground it's all for naught right yeah you're wasting
26:46your time yeah so hopefully Freddie's able to find something decent out there for you guys
26:52I got the cylinder all done now I'm gonna get it mounted so that's ready to go
27:04I'm gonna go grab a gold pan and I want to pan some of this and see if we see
27:08any color in it
27:09down in the creek Freddie tests the promising looking pay he's just uncovered in Brett's cut
27:16so we're gonna take little bits randomly from them throughout the pile a moment of truth guys let's
27:27see if we get some color I hope so I really do
27:45you see all those rounded rocks so these have traveled quite some distance
27:54at the Allen mine Freddie evaluates the freshly uncovered pay two little bitty colors
28:05this time you go grab a pan do some random stuff all right it doesn't mean it's not in that
28:11pile but
28:13it's damn sure it wasn't in the pan I'd like to seen 20 colors in that pan or 30 yeah

28:38okay well this pan's pretty heavy there you go let's see what we got maybe third pan's a charm huh

29:00there's a lot of challenges to mining in a tight valley but it isn't like we'll have a thousand
29:05acre property here to prospect yeah we're basically on a postage stamp we don't have time to move your
29:11whole plant assembly ponds everything while we're here and test some other areas on your ground from
29:17let's say 30 feet farther over so let's just keep our fingers crossed because we have thousands of
29:24pans of material sitting there right now yeah so we got a true test we can do there should be
29:30gold
29:30there we got rounded rocks we got big boulders we got all the telltale signs that if there is gold
29:38in
29:38the deposit that's where it'd be the only thing that's missing is the gold right where's the gold
29:45I've never been in this situation you know with the miners we've helped before we dug down to
29:50bedrock the material looked great phenomenal better than I thought it would actually I didn't see much
29:57gold I thought we'd see a lot more colors and this kind of questions where our future goes going with
30:05mining thinking uh big day tired and tons of question marks they still got enough money to put
30:14beans on the table they won't soon if this property doesn't pay the bills we're on a second test and
30:21what gold's there is what gold's there but hopefully it's more than the gold in those pans
30:39we got a lot to get done this morning I got the Grizzlies installed so we still got to do
30:43the
30:43hydraulic cylinder underneath a critical day for fixes at the Allen claim it's all hands on deck to
30:51get the plant ready for the second test run one time we grind away the paint here so it gives

30:57contact for the weld he's gonna put on here anything I can take stuff off with his hands this is
31:03the
31:04wireless remote control and he's in the excavator he can wirelessly control the Grizzlies he can open
31:10them or close them we had to program it but it's ready to go it's really great to work with
31:18one I can
31:19take the skills he's showed me and onto the site and show my dad as well something he hasn't known
31:29that'll work on the hopper he has an eccentric and that's vibrating the hopper to be able to feed that
31:36material down onto the Grizzlies next Juan turns his attention to the issue of the slow feed rate those are
31:45going to be the weights for the eccentric right now it doesn't have enough vibration but by adding weight
31:50to it you should be able to get more vibration out of it that's really cool the increase in vibration
31:56will shake through more pay and allow the material to be processed in less time so now I'm going to

32:05it on the trailer get it down to the mine site get it installed going to pressure well Juan you
32:16ready
32:16I'm ready
32:25yeah there's no way we would have been able to do all that work at the mine site
32:28no no we got in now we got to put it together Freddy yeah and run okay good a little
32:43more a little
32:44more a little more slowly let her down it's crunch time you can feel it and it you're you're just
32:52rushing and hustling bustling to work together as a team to make it all happen all right that looks
33:01good that's good that's exciting you ever tried this on your sandwiches it's really good I heard it's
33:10good we got the hopper on all the springs are in place what we're going to do we're going to
33:23put a
33:23little bracket down below so we can put the hydraulic pump in there and the battery with the upgraded
33:28hopper now reattached let's put a silt dam in here to keep that silt up here where your tailings are
33:35time is running out on the day so Freddy and Brett turned their attention to one last important bush
33:42fix we're trying to get you the most gold you can get from this unproven ground that really fine gold
33:48when that water gets thick gold has a hard time falling out of that so when you make water and
33:53silt
33:53go down gravity works right well the water can go under the water will go back up but it'll help
34:00that
34:00silt continue diving so get rid of a lot of the silt that's suspended in your water it'll allow you
34:08to run your plant longer the longer you run the more gold you can get right pound your end down
34:21let's grab a tarp
34:32there we go I've got a chain we'll put in the bottom if not this tarp would just float on

34:38surface okay so it's simple but it works we got all that pay we dug out stacked up here let's
34:47just
34:47hope there's enough gold in it all we can do now is keep our fingers crossed and see what this
34:51test does
34:56coming up we wouldn't have the amount of gold that we've extracted out of the ground had it not
35:02been for what we learned from Freddy and Juan
35:16you were able to get a few things done for you guys
35:19in remote southwest Idaho the Allen family's plant is ready for the second test run ready
35:26got your silt dam installed there it'll keep your water cleaner longer I love the idea the silt dam
35:32will stop Brett's water becoming too thick to catch any fine gold let's go take a look at the plant

35:39of the things that we noticed was he spent 30 percent of your time playing with the Grizzlies trying to
35:42get him cleaned out so we built you a new system that you can remotely operate the Grizzlies and it
35:47pushes
35:47all the material out Brett can now continuously feed pay without stopping to clear them great
35:54idea we also did some extra weights on your eccentrics the extra vibration of the hopper will increase the
36:01flow of pay down into the wash plan like that let's do a two-hour test okay let's do it
36:07start up
36:16oh yeah hopefully this test lets them know whether to stay in line or to claim this property and move
36:24out I'm hopeful but I'm I'm a little worried a family support for Brett is gonna be critical right
36:32now two-hour test huh start a timer let's do it Freddie runs a two-hour test to get a
36:39like-for-like
36:40result to compare with the first run first bucket see the rake is pushing it yeah that's cool man
36:57this is something we've never tried before and honestly I'm really happy the way it's working
37:03salt dam is working good water looks a lot cleaner than before okay this is looking really good every
37:12rock coming off nice and clean if all of this turns out very successful it would mean pretty much
37:20everything there's two hours huh yep hey Brett last bucket good work get it cleaned up guys and
37:37we'll meet you for a gold way huh sounds like a winner let's go for it see you guys in

37:42cleanup time the Allen's hope of replacing their auto body business with a viable gold mining venture
37:52rests on these results you said when we first got here you know you'd tell us straight up what you
37:58think and that's what we've done this whole week yeah poured in there we're already above the first
38:08cleanup point zero three point zero four point zero six let's call it 150 160 dollars worth of gold
38:18there for two hours with his upgraded plant and better ground in a 10-hour day Brett could make just
38:27eight hundred dollars still not where it needs to be no it's not hate to say that you know yeah
38:35only half
38:36of what he needs to make this a viable business for himself and his family but nothing ventured nothing
38:44gained right your business back home you know instead of sitting there crying about it you're
38:48out trying to make a living still trying to do the best you can for your wife and your kids
38:52you know and
38:53they're supporting you thanks you've already got a plant you've already got pumps and you have a team
38:59with you that can help you succeed if you find the right ground more than anything you have a team
39:04that's
39:04willing to stick with you through anything so that's a big thing yeah that's priceless yeah but
39:10you should reclaim this property and move out so figure out where that next step is you got it thanks

39:32and gold mining's like any other business if you don't know what you're doing you're not going to

40:14and I came across any of these three yeah that would be the treasure and I'd throw everything else
40:21back thanks guys yeah love you tons so we came together as a family and realized that if we
40:38continued to stay on the mine site we were on it wasn't going to be profitable and that led us
40:44to
40:44an opportunity to purchase my dad's old claim back it's a really weird experience seeing my own son
40:51working a piece of land that you know I had a huge attachment to as a kid we've worked 20
40:58days on the
40:59new mine site and we've pulled 4.5 ounces out so we have income coming in and we will keep
41:06building
41:06the mine as a business what's really cool about this is we're erasing bad memories and making great
41:12memories we wouldn't have the amount of gold that we've extracted out of the ground had it not been
41:18for what we learned from Freddie and Juan and the best part of all this is my dad is officially
41:24coming
41:24to the mine site so we're pretty excited about that to two fantastic individuals we all want to say
