00:00This time on Motorway Patrol, dangerous speeds.
00:04Oh my god, 213.
00:06You had someone in the car and you were driving crazy speeds, okay?
00:11I don't want to hear no, yes or whatever.
00:13Hot wheels.
00:14There's a stolen alert on this car, okay?
00:17What I'm going to do is I'm going to place you in handcuffs.
00:19And sage advice.
00:20Your car explodes and then starts overheating.
00:24Yeah, pull over and stop, turn off your engine.
00:42Thursday, 11pm.
00:44Sergeant Rowan McCarthy is checking for drivers taking advantage of the quiet motorway and putting their foot down.
00:51Oh my god.
00:53213.
00:54That's one here, mate.
00:59A black Mercedes saloon has almost broken the sound barrier at 213 km per hour.
01:06We're switching to the south link at this phase.
01:08Got a little bit of a change in front of him.
01:13Rowan is following the Merc from a safe distance with directions from ATOC.
01:17Eagle helicopter backs them up.
01:21This dangerous driver needs to be intercepted before he kills himself or someone else.
01:31One of the non-negotiables of driving on the motorway is compliance with the road rules.
01:36Constable Adrian Bentley is on the hunt for a driver who's in need of some safety education.
01:44Motorists have reported a driver for blatantly ignoring a critical road rule.
01:56The reason I'm stopping you is because we've had members of the public ring up telling us that your children
02:01are not in car seats.
02:01Oh no.
02:03She does not feel well.
02:06Yeah, well she'll feel a lot worse if you're in an accident, okay?
02:10Yeah.
02:10It's crucial that children remain in their car seats.
02:13If you have an accident, someone crashes into you through no fault of your own.
02:17Yeah.
02:17They get seriously injured and can die.
02:20Yeah.
02:20Alright?
02:22Adrian hopes his stern words ring true with the driver.
02:26Hello.
02:26Is she feeling okay or just a little bit sick?
02:28Oh, oh, oh.
02:29Yeah, so we need to get this seat belt on her now, okay?
02:32Before you go anywhere else.
02:33But I'm ready.
02:34Is this just a booster seat?
02:35Yeah, okay.
02:35Okay, that's all right, that's all right.
02:36Yep.
02:37So just maybe get rid of all this stuff.
02:39Yep.
02:40With the child safely strapped in, Adrian's happy for them to continue.
02:45Alright, thank you for getting her in a car seat, alright?
02:47That could potentially save her life.
02:49You will be receiving a ticket today though, okay?
02:51Okay.
02:51The risk for not having a child in a car seat is too great.
02:55What people don't realise is even if they consider themselves good drivers and don't get into
02:59an accident themselves, they can always be the victim of someone else's poor driving.
03:04And unfortunately, you know, we see it too often where innocent members of the public get involved
03:09in an accident and some people get hurt.
03:11So hopefully a small infringement will persuade him to make sure his children are in proper seat belts moving forward.
03:22Sergeant Rowan McCarthy has clocked an insane speed on the North Western.
03:27Oh my god.
03:30213.
03:30Jato, pick one.
03:31I'm looking like a change in front of the way.
03:35Yeah, just keep the, um, I bet it's going, thanks Jato.
03:38Just keeping on with no vehicles.
03:40Just like a young male driver.
03:43We pushed away this house.
03:45We've gone left on to Owen.
03:46He's on Owen.
03:47Oh.
03:48He's gone over there.
03:51He's gone up that way.
03:53This road up here.
03:54End of this road.
03:55After flooring it on the motorway, the driver pulls off to a suburban street.
03:59Another unit has already intercepted and arrested the driver.
04:05Are you sure you're not mistaken for someone else?
04:09What's that?
04:09Are you sure you're not mistaken for someone else?
04:11Howdy, mate.
04:12Howdy, mate.
04:13Uh, driver's there.
04:14How's he doing?
04:14Uh, just getting kids.
04:17It's all caught on camera, mate.
04:18All caught on camera, alright?
04:19Which camera?
04:20Motorway's cameras.
04:22Alright, so, I'm just going to re-arrest you, alright?
04:24Because I'm the one who's going to be dealing with you, okay?
04:26Yep.
04:27Alright, so you're under arrest for dangerous driving?
04:29Okay.
04:30Probably reckless driving, actually.
04:31There's speed.
04:32Okay.
04:33Uh, no, no, no.
04:34I would be happy to.
04:35I'm with speed, like I said.
04:37You don't think that was you that was doing that?
04:38High speed?
04:39No.
04:40You must have mistaken someone, honestly.
04:43Yeah?
04:44You think we've been mistaken someone?
04:45Oh, okay.
04:48While the driver's in denial, the passenger starts to come clean.
04:52Oh, just speeding.
04:54Yeah.
04:55What was the rush?
04:58Not really a rush.
04:59Just wanted to try it out.
05:02Just recently got it.
05:03Just wanted to try it out.
05:05Constable Nicole Methvin tries to talk some sense into the passenger.
05:09It's not good when your friend drives like that, eh?
05:12You don't really care about your life at all?
05:16Really?
05:16How long have you been friends with them for?
05:18Three years.
05:19Four years.
05:20Four years, right.
05:21Do you drive like that a lot?
05:23Sometimes.
05:24Rowan hopes tonight's scare gets the driver to slow down, but it's not looking promising.
05:30Okay, you don't want to make a statement?
05:32No, there's no statement to be said if I haven't done anything wrong.
05:36Okay.
05:38Unfortunately, Rowan and the other officers have seen the aftermath of this kind of excessive speed.
05:43I just don't know why this is happening.
05:45Yeah.
05:46Whether you're going to admit it or not, because clearly you're not going to.
05:49You had someone in the car and you were driving crazy speeds, okay?
05:53I don't want to hear no, yes or whatever.
05:56You know it was you.
05:57You know.
06:04After reaching speeds of 213 km per hour, a young driver is denying any responsibility.
06:11Officers are trying to talk some sense into him.
06:13You had someone in the car and you were driving crazy speeds, okay?
06:18I don't want to hear no, yes or whatever.
06:20You know it was you.
06:21You know.
06:24You've got to think of not just yourself, your passenger and everyone else on the road, okay?
06:29It's not your life that could just be changed.
06:32It's everybody else's.
06:34Rowan's laser had the car locked at 213 km per hour,
06:38and ATOC cameras show the vehicle moving twice as fast as everyone else.
06:43The tow truck arrives to impound this V8 for 28 days,
06:47and Rowan has some more bad news for this restricted driver.
06:51Have you got a full licence mate?
06:53What sort of licence have you got?
06:55A learner's.
06:56Okay, so you're going to get a ticket for that tour, right?
06:59You understand?
07:01You're supposed to have a full licence driver next to you.
07:04Do you know that rule?
07:05No, I've never heard of it.
07:06You've never heard of the what?
07:08Yeah, I understand.
07:08You think you can drive around on a restricted driver's licence.
07:11Yes.
07:11After 10 o'clock and he's on a learner licence, and you think that's okay?
07:16As long as you drive safe.
07:18Do you understand what?
07:19Do you know your conditions for driving on a restricted driver's licence?
07:24Yes, just the curfew.
07:25That's about it.
07:26What's the curfew?
07:27What are the times?
07:27Around 10.
07:2810 to what time?
07:2910 to probably 5 or 6 o'clock.
07:33Okay.
07:34You mean, you know, so you can't drive by yourself between 10 and 5?
07:38Yeah.
07:39He's not taking any ownership of this, denying he was the driver or his vehicle.
07:45There's clear footage of him going at speeds over 200km an hour on that motorway.
07:51Hence the reason why he's being charged with reckless driving.
07:53He's on his restricted licence, and he's had a passenger in the vehicle who didn't have
07:58any other licence.
07:59That speed is just way too fast, and obviously reckless.
08:04As you can see in the background, the vehicle's about to be towed, so that's his new car.
08:08He's going to have to pay to get that out of the impound yard, and when he goes to court,
08:12if he gets convicted, he's going to lose his licence for six months.
08:22On the motorway, officers often rely on fellow motorists calling in risky driving.
08:28Tonight, Sergeant J.D. Koppel is responding to one such call.
08:33Colm was fixed for you, just got ops on that vehicle, making an approach passing there for
08:37right now, stand by.
08:39Just received a call from member public regarding this vehicle in front of us.
08:42It's been swerving across lanes in consistent speeds.
08:45We've just intercepted it now, and we're waiting for another unit here to come assist us
08:50with a stop.
08:52Pass you now, guys.
08:56With another unit responding as backup, J.D. signals for the erratic driver to pull over.
09:02It's a signal that I'm pushing off at Lincoln off ramp now, coming to a stop.
09:11Morning, mate.
09:13Hi.
09:13Can you just turn the car off for me, please?
09:15Sir, have you got your driver's licence on you?
09:17Is the driver impaired, or maybe just his vision?
09:20The car's a bit foggy, eh?
09:21Yeah, bro.
09:23Sorry, is it not a...
09:24Sorry?
09:25...80?
09:25Is that what it was?
09:27No, it was your manner of driving, mate.
09:28You're swerving across lanes.
09:30Am I?
09:31Yeah.
09:31What's the reason for that?
09:33I genuinely just...
09:34Can't see?
09:34Trying to get to a spot where I can stop.
09:37Oh yeah, I'm not surprised, man.
09:38Yeah.
09:39J.D.'s baffled as to why anyone would drive under these conditions.
09:43At the back, windshield was completely fogged up.
09:46And it got even worse when it got to the front.
09:48You could hardly see a thing out at the front, and it's come all the way from QMU.
09:52This Corolla may be 20 years old, but it still comes complete with aircon.
09:56Do you think it may have been a good idea just to wait to defrost the window before driving off?
10:01It wasn't that bad, and then this fogged up.
10:03Kind of got worse.
10:04Yeah, I guess.
10:05Yeah, we had a call from a member of the public as well, thinking that you may have been intoxicated.
10:09On that note, have you had any alcohol tonight?
10:12Uh, yeah, but...
10:12You have?
10:13Not, like, not a lot.
10:15Put your lips around that tube.
10:16Yeah.
10:17Yep, and blow until I tell you to stop.
10:21The driver passes the breath test.
10:23But there's no test to make sure you know how to turn on the de-mister.
10:26Yeah, I think it'd be 101 for vehicles, knowing how to defog your windscreen.
10:30He was adamant, he'd had it going, blasting it the whole way.
10:35You want to be on that one to defrost the front before you're blowing hot air in your face.
10:40He had it set on the front vent, so he was blasting his face, defrosting his face rather than the
10:45windshield.
10:46Alright mate, we need to sort out your windows before we can let you continue driving.
10:49We've got all the right settings on.
10:51Yep, just blast that, it'll help clear it a bit more.
10:53Got him to wipe it down with a jumper.
10:55A quick AC tutorial and a windscreen wipe down, and this foggy driver is on his way.
11:01Any time a member of the public sees dangerous or careless driving, they should give us a call.
11:05Even if the person's not intoxicated, which was the case tonight, that could have still resulted in a serious crash
11:12if you couldn't see where he was going, so we appreciate the calls.
11:21Aucklanders love cars.
11:22Over one million hit the motorway every year.
11:25And no stretch of road is more used than State Highway 1.
11:30Today, a Toyota travelling city-bound fishtails crashes nose first into the centre barrier.
11:39Constable Tristan Rudden is called to lend a hand.
11:42Apparently a single vehicle that has hit the barrier and is now 90 degrees on the motorway.
11:48That could be quite dangerous.
11:52Comes to six, going to seven.
11:54It's on a blind corner, so maybe another unit can give us a bit of a tail.
12:00Hey mate, what happened?
12:02My left dog is not controlled properly.
12:05Okay.
12:06I feel it when I turn, and then the car's not controlled to come to this leg.
12:10Yeah.
12:10It's brake and then not thinning.
12:14The driver is keen to explain how he ended up in such a pickle.
12:18I think I try to turn, and then I can't stop it, and then I rest the thing.
12:24How fast were you going?
12:25Like, it was not even, like, 80.
12:28Oh yeah.
12:28Like, maybe 60 or 70.
12:31And I can't stop it, like, whew!
12:34Because I'm beginning again, please, then.
12:37But Tristan has some news which will stop any car repairs.
12:40There's a stolen alert on this car, okay?
12:44What I'm going to do is I'm going to place you in handcuffs, okay?
12:46Just turn around for me, please.
12:57State Highway 1, and Constable Tristan Rudden is arresting a man in a suspected stolen vehicle.
13:04He's fishtailed into the barrier, and now he's in cuffs.
13:10But he's got another pressing problem.
13:13I've been in my pants.
13:15I've been in my pants.
13:16I've been in my pants.
13:16Oh, s***.
13:17I've got some pants.
13:18Alright, it's all good, bro.
13:19We'll just figure out what's going on, and then we can get you another pair of pants.
13:24Okay, thank you.
13:24All good.
13:25Busted pants, and busted.
13:29Constable Ran Lee is here to assist, and starts by searching the vehicle for any signs of the rightful owner.
13:36While Senior Constable Bryce Packard tries to identify the driver and the car.
13:42I know you've given the other officer some details, but he said he's struggling to find you in the system,
13:46yeah?
13:47I mean, have you dealt with police before?
13:48Oh no, this is my first time.
13:49First time?
13:50Yeah.
13:52And you don't have a license?
13:54No, I don't have any license.
13:56No license and no ID.
13:59This driver's not doing himself any favours.
14:02So the issue I'm having here is I'm just trying to figure out who you actually are, okay?
14:07That's why I'm asking so many questions, okay?
14:09Yeah, I know.
14:10But the man has a tall tale to tell.
14:13So you said that's your mister's car?
14:15That's my dad's car.
14:16He gave me that car.
14:17But I don't have a license and I need to go to work.
14:20So you said your dad's car, that one?
14:22Yeah, yeah, yeah.
14:23But it's not coming up under dad's name either.
14:25And it doesn't explain the stolen alert.
14:28He's got no driver's license, so I can't confirm if it's actually him or not.
14:32But everything, all the details he's giving me is matching someone else.
14:37Tristan needs to figure out who the driver is and why his car's coming up as stolen.
14:42So just this car's got stolen alert.
14:45It doesn't appear to have any broken glass.
14:47It's got no ignition pulled or anything.
14:49And then the guy driving it, he's suggesting that he's got no knowledge of it being stolen.
14:54He reckons it's his father's car he's driving now because he needs to go to work.
14:59As Tristan runs more checks on the driver, the towhee arrives to clear the smashed car.
15:07Ran tries another approach with the man.
15:10Can you just tell me how you got this car?
15:13Yeah, they got my dad carried to me.
15:15And they changed the ownership from my dad to my missus.
15:18It seems multiple changes of ownership within the family has added to the confusion.
15:24Tristan finds out the truth from the registered owner.
15:27It's just a real complicated scenario.
15:29So we've got a stolen car that's had a crash.
15:31However, the circumstances for the stolen aspect of it is just some sort of issues between the family.
15:36Not really a concern for us now that we've looked into it.
15:41With family feuds sorted for now, it's time for more urgent matters.
15:45Do you want to jump out?
15:46We can take your handcuffs off.
15:48What's my shirt?
15:50Oh, at least your shirt's long enough.
15:52Yeah, yeah.
15:53Come out.
15:55Yeah.
15:56So I'm going to take this off.
15:57We're not going to deal with the stolen aspect of the car because it sounds like it's between the family.
16:03Yeah, it's like that.
16:04No doubt there will be more family discussion tonight about the prized Toyota.
16:09So in terms of your driving without a license, that's naughty.
16:14You know you need to have a license, hey?
16:17Yeah.
16:17So I'm giving you this.
16:18This means that you cannot drive until you're appropriately licensed, okay?
16:22Appropriately licensed, yes.
16:23The driver was given two infringement notices, one $400 fine for driving without an appropriate driver's license
16:30and a $150 ticket for an unsafe lane change that caused him to fishtail and he crashed into the centre
16:35barrier.
16:36Once we all cleared up from the scene, we gave the driver an expensive Uber ride home
16:41because he had unfortunately split his pants.
16:44Moral of the story is keep a good safe following distance from the car in front of you
16:48and always wear a clean pair of undies underneath your pants.
16:54It's Friday the 13th and Sergeant Jonathan Campbell is heading towards a motorist
16:59having a nightmare.
17:00It's not on Elm Street but State Highway 1.
17:04Hiya, what's happened?
17:05We've got hard trouble.
17:07So on the way out to the airport, big bang, smoke.
17:12Going to the airport on such a notoriously spooky day is bound to land you in some trouble.
17:18The way back now, a lot of rattling and then steam coming out the front.
17:22Sergeant Campbell goes in search for the source of such a foul smell.
17:26Yeah, I can smell the water vapour from when it overheats like that.
17:34Sergeant Campbell immediately spots the problem.
17:36The hose connecting the water reservoir to the radiator is loose.
17:41It's possible to be able to put that back on.
17:43With water so he can fill it up and get it off the motorway and then get it to the
17:48garage.
17:48Yeah, so if we re-screw it on and then fill it with water you might be alright to go.
17:54Sergeant Campbell plays it cool, not wanting to alert the two women as to the possible presence of creatures from
18:00another realm.
18:01I'm surprised this has come off though.
18:04You'd think these are tight enough and that it should never happen like that, you know.
18:10Hopefully that's the only cause of it, in which case it's an easy fix.
18:14But if there's something else that's going on that's caused that, I don't know.
18:18With the potential for other Friday the 13th nasties to interfere with the traveller's journey...
18:23We're going to Wyoming Island.
18:25We have ladies' free Christmas holiday together and this is the start of it.
18:31Sergeant Campbell calls in traffic management.
18:33The TIM unit we call it, traffic incident manager.
18:36Those utes, have you ever seen them with the yellow lights?
18:38Yeah.
18:39So they have some stuff on board they might be able to help you out.
18:43They're on their way are they?
18:44Yeah.
18:44You're amazing, thank you.
18:47Whether driving to a holiday destination or not, Sergeant Campbell has some sound advice.
18:54If your car explodes and then starts overheating, yeah, pull over and stop, turn off your engine.
19:00Yeah.
19:00Well it's actually going pretty well, we got rescued, so...
19:03Yeah, we've been rescued.
19:04That's amazing.
19:05Thank you so much.
19:06I really appreciate it.
19:07Have a fun trip, eh?
19:08Oh my goodness.
19:09Hopefully no more dramas.
19:16Meanwhile, Sergeant JD Koppel is attending a similar incident.
19:19Another driver seems to be having Friday the 13th bad luck on the other side of the motorway.
19:27It looks like they're doing some repair work to their vehicle, so not an ideal space to be doing that,
19:32so we're just going to stop by and have a chat to them.
19:36The occupants of this vehicle seem to be going nowhere fast.
19:40Sergeant Koppel hopes to turn their luck around.
19:43JD thinks it best not to scare them.
19:47Hey guys.
19:49What's the issue with the car?
19:51Can belt's car.
19:52Oh.
19:53Alright, not much you can do about that, eh?
19:55Many of us are sceptical about 13 being unlucky, but this driver's tale will leave most in no doubt.
20:03I bought this car today, eh, and I kind of got scammed.
20:07Can belt just f***ed out.
20:08It seemed perfectly munt, eh?
20:10Uh, pretty much, yeah, a couple hundred metres ago.
20:13Just heard a f***ing bang and just lost all power.
20:17This bad day sees the young man out of pocket to the tune of...
20:2111 grand.
20:22The good news is the young couple have managed to organise a tow.
20:26Okay, who's coming to do the tow?
20:27Have they got a tow truck? Are they going to use a strop or...
20:32Whereabouts are you going?
20:33The bad news is they want to tow to Hamilton.
20:36They can't tow you with a strop all the way to Hamilton.
20:39Unlike the stage show, this isn't music to JD's ears.
20:43Hamilton's 100 kilometres away.
20:46If they're using a strop, they can get you off the motorway.
20:48But it's not safe to tow on the motorway with a strop.
20:51I've seen some horrible, horrible accidents.
20:53We've seen motorcycles cut between vehicles, get taken out and whatnot.
20:58The tow truck driver, also known as Dad, soon arrives.
21:02And after a meeting of minds, both parties agree that Hamilton is not the appropriate destination this afternoon.
21:09It's much safer to park up and sort the repairs with a local mechanic.
21:15So the plan is to tow the vehicle off the motorway at the next exit, which is a few hundred
21:21metres up.
21:22So for now, the self-proclaimed city of the future will remain just that, in this young man's future.
21:31The speeding driver was disqualified from driving for six months and ordered to attend a driving improvement course.
21:37He was also fined $800 for reckless driving and given 35 demerit points for driving on his restricted without a
21:44suitable overseer.
21:49The driver who fishtailed was fined $550 for driving without an appropriate licence and failing to drive within a lane.
21:56He was forbidden to drive until appropriately licensed.
22:01The driver was fined $150 for failing to restrain a child under seven years.
