00:00let's start with the texans man uh the nfl draft is over and the texans got busy right guard let's
00:08say interior offensive lineman in the first round keelan rutledge uh caden mcdonald an all-american
00:15interior defensive line most teams had him slated as a first round pick he slid into the top of the
00:20second the texans move up and got caden mcdonald uh marlon last guy in the green room yeah yeah
00:27yeah by the way that's i mean that was that was great that was good stuff man a lot of
00:30folks will
00:31run from that from that uh that situation the way he handled it was absolutely uh impressive
00:37tidy and marlon klein out of michigan in the second round late second round no third round pick jump
00:42to the fourth round and uh b scott you got that one right there for that man i don't i
00:47heard i
00:48actually heard res do this try this one earlier and i'm gonna trust his in way woo for bet you
00:53in
00:53way woo i'm gonna wait to meet my man another offensive guard wait till he hears yeah i'm gonna
00:58ask him to pronounce it for me like i'm five that's right offensive guard out of oklahoma wade
01:03wood as clemson linebacker another fourth round pick then one pick in the fifth kamari ramsey safety
01:09out of usc and then a sixth and seventh round pick lewis bond wide receiver out of boston college as
01:15well
01:15as aiden fisher linebacker out of indiana that that is the 2026 draft obviously the texans will bring
01:23in uh several free agents uh several of which will probably make the team in some capacity uh but
01:30but that is the draft for the houston texans and i think this this is a draft for the texans
01:34that's
01:35probably a little difficult to uh grade if you will what we were talking about with reg and
01:40and uh and j-lo uh i've got it tabbed as a solid to really good draft a lot of
01:49wait and see
01:50a lot of wait and see we'll see how these guys pan out b scott but but i like the
01:54upside before i
01:55get i'm gonna give the folks best case scenario all right right because i think this is very real
02:01right i think this best case scenario is very real but before i jump into this uh this this more
02:07specific conversation b scott just your thoughts overall on the texans draft that wrapped up uh would
02:14wrap up saturday yeah wrapped up i like what they did clint i i think they came away
02:19with at the very least two players if not three that should impact the team right away you mentioned
02:25wood as the the linebacker that they drafted that's somebody that's going to impact them on special
02:30teams i can't wait to see frank ross just as a sidebar frank ross get his hands on him but
02:35the top
02:36two guys are the ones that i'm focusing on as plug and potential plug and play starters and the beauty
02:42of it not to make light of the draft but the beauty of it for a texans team that's already
02:47pretty well
02:47built like it's not like you're in the 2023 draft and you're looking for hope and looking for your
02:53foundational pieces you're looking for stuff around you you're really trying to fill the the specific
02:58needs that you have that's why when we heard nick asario talking about best player available
03:02uh we kind of knew hey you know you got some specific targets that you probably need to be
03:07hitting and what do you know they go out there and do that getting an interior offensive lineman who's
03:12played right guard in college but looks like somebody that could snap the ball at least sounds like
03:16he's comfortable with doing that and then mcdonald somebody that you can put in the middle
03:20of a defense that certainly needed some help there look i've got a million texts hey man what do you
03:25think about the draft hey how'd you feel about that draft what about these texans i'm up on it man
03:28and
03:29yeah i i am too i'm gonna tell you that the the first round pick i said before i guess
03:34that was on
03:34thursday's show before the first round that and and an offensive tackle i'd be disappointed if they went
03:40that route really any offensive line it would be a little bit of a buzz kill for me right i
03:45see who they take
03:46obviously initially it was a little buzz kill took the wind out of my sails and then i start digging
03:50on who this kid is right and then i then i listen to him speak and it matches the play
03:57it matches
03:57what the texans are trying to do in their offensive line room really across the board offensively but
04:03definitely in their offensive line room uh i started looking at like hey man you pair this guy
04:08this young guy with last year's young guy who can obviously play and has a physical trait to him
04:14now you've got two tips of a spear where if you hit on both of them great i'm talking about
04:18i'm
04:18talking about from a leadership perspective they're obviously one of them's obviously a really good
04:21player but if you hit on both of these guys and they're really good players and they're both cut
04:25from a certain cloth and have that leadership ability to hold people accountable now you've got a real
04:30power movement going through your o-line room that's hard to deny so i came around where i was going
04:36with that i came around on the first round draft pick now that was all leading up to to the
04:40weekend
04:41before our last show and so i want to talk best case scenario right because i think this is this
04:47is where we're at i think it's solid i love the upside a lot of wait and see and when
04:53i say wait
04:53and see b scott you you know you hit on it a little bit there in your comments if keelan
04:59rutledge best
05:00case scenario if keelan rutledge is a kamari lassiter like plug and play center for the houston texans yeah
05:11legitimately and and and when i say kamari lassiter i don't say that lightly we all know how that's
05:15worked out if he is that kind of plug and play rookie then this is a grand that pick is
05:21a grand
05:22slam if mcdonald is a no again a lassiter like plug and play starter on the interior of this defensive
05:34line and is it'll be if it happens it'll be viewed as a steal of this draft yeah and if
05:40that happens
05:42that mcdonald pick is going to be an absolute grand slam i'm going to take it one one step further
05:47than
05:47where you took it i'm going to take to the tight end the second round tight end that they drafted
05:49out
05:50michigan as well yeah marlon klein marlon klein right if he is simply hey i can put my hand in
05:57the dirt in 12 personnel one back two tight ends two wide outs and i can execute the run block
06:07that that part of the game and i'm not saying go in there be dominant and move defensive ends like
06:12jj
06:12water around hey i'm saying that i'm saying go in there and your specialty be hand in the dirt
06:18i know how to have great body position i'll put my my face mask in somebody's chest i'll push i'll
06:24be an extension of a tackle right if if he is if he is just that maybe he can do
06:31some of the long
06:31stride and stuff we saw highlights on on espn after he got drafted maybe maybe he can do that it's
06:36fine
06:36whatever if he can simply be a tight end that can embrace the blocking aspect of it and show some
06:44level of physicality uh beyond what we've seen from our tight ends so far i think that is not not
06:51a
06:51grand slam but i think that is a really really really good pick based on what the texans needed
06:57going into this draft yeah no you hit it that's the position of need right like from the into your
07:02offensive line into your defensive line tight end this is something that we have discussed
07:07throughout the offseason really it feels like throughout multiple offseasons that they try to
07:11figure out their tight end depth and i'll be honest man if you tell me like i think we could
07:16all be satisfied if the texans were to do just do nothing but draft kamari lassiter types at their
07:22respective positions whatever position you play helpful right play it like kamari lassiter does
07:27and kind of approach the game that way and be that caliber of player and you'll be pretty satisfied
07:31with the pick no matter where it is that you pick them first round second round trade it up whatever
07:35you gave up you'll be happy with that but i i play a little devil's advocate on this is like
07:40that's the best case scenario there is that question of with rutledge having not actually
07:46played center or not played much of it he was their emergency center at georgia tech but pretty much all
07:51of his career is exclusive to right guard um same thing i would say uh more so with uh with
07:57the tight end
07:58with klein it's not uh it's not a position change but he's a little thin right like he's somebody that
08:04john harris has talked about being like a willing blocker but not necessarily great at it so let's
08:09see how that's going to translate to the nfl game right not necessarily a great blocker
08:12in college is he going to be that immediately in the nfl we'll have to see so i mean i
08:18got some
08:19questions but i do like at least the thinking the process right yeah you can see the vision is my
08:25point right and that's that's the part of it that i really appreciate well b scott i think i mean
08:29you
08:29make a great point because there is obviously a uh on the flip side of that and that's really i'll
08:33be
08:33honest with you probably like that more than i like the upside the upside is fun to talk about
08:38right but if keelan rutledge let's say he isn't a center because he hadn't done much of it let's say
08:44he can't embrace you know like listen retain and apply the playbook the way he needs to to be the
08:49main communicator on that offensive line let's say he's a guard all right let's say he's a guard and
08:55somebody gets injured he has a step in he plays that physical brand of guard okay let's say mcdonald on
09:00the defensive side of the football is a much needed rotational piece yeah right let's say
09:05klein again to your point not a physical force at the tight end position but is a willing blocker put
09:09his hand in the dirt and can do things that that dalton schultz doesn't want to do yeah right and
09:14can
09:14do it maybe a little bit better than than the the the caged over who we've been waiting to develop
09:19and
09:19waiting to develop and waiting to develop and has some elite physical attributes yes elite physical
09:24attributes for a tight end let's say it's not best case scenario and we land in that spot with those
09:29guys
09:29i i'm not going to tell you it was a grand slam draft but if you get three starters
09:37out of out of you know or or a starter at guard and rotational pieces at rotational positions that
09:44help you play on both sides of the ball it was a pretty damn good draft relatively speaking so
09:49i i want the grand slam of course but but i i like this draft based on those top three
09:54guys and
09:55really based on i mean it's it's gonna be hard for these guys to bust yeah well even with rutledge
10:03i'm i'm glad you talked like we're talking about the contingency plan like if rutledge turns out to
10:08be not a center like ideally he could be your center and a guard and waiting right but you gotta
10:14think
10:14about it like this ed ingram is signed for the next few years but they don't owe him any more
10:19than
10:19five million dollars after next year so most of the money is up front next year they owe him five
10:24million he could be your backup plan your contingency plan at right guard your right guard of the future
10:29which is his natural position yeah if he can't play center so it's a lot it's a lot of things
10:33to like
10:33about it even if it doesn't work out in this ideal form yeah and you've got the good thing is
10:37the
10:38texans another thing i like is you've got interior offensive linemen and plenty of it to allow him to
10:43develop as as he needs to now when you come in talking the way keelan rutledge is talking hey um
10:48now i mean you better be a dog from jump now we'll see we'll see exactly how that works out
10:53but it
10:53seems to be if the if it ain't just complete false advertisement from from domico nick and keelan
11:00rutledge himself then i don't see how he doesn't touch the field pretty often when they made the pick
11:04john harris just he was of course beside himself yeah but he said man tell me that guy doesn't look
11:10like
11:10wyatt teller like in john in john harris's mind keelan rutledge is basically like a younger version
11:15of a wyatt teller and i was like man it's even better than that he looks like wyatt teller gone
11:20rogue right you know what i'm saying like like wyatt teller with a screw loose you know what i mean
11:26hey you know the other thing the other part of this and and we can touch on this down the
11:29road is
11:29and i had i actually mentioned this about two weeks ago in just a general conversation with ron
11:34um and tyler but the the thought that a a keelan rutledge or whoever if they drafted a player in
11:42the first round could at the very least be a guy with a huge upside at multiple positions on the
11:48offensive line and could improve that sixth offensive lineman role yeah um i've always said
11:55i like a guard now if you got a tackle with a guard mentality that's good that's good too but
11:59i like a
11:59guard i like 320 that wants to that wants to rip your head off and mess in your neck i
12:04like that guy
12:05being that sixth offensive lineman yeah you know not just making it work from a personnel perspective
12:10because you want better protection or you want more no this guy is a true weapon so even if he's
12:15used in that role i still think it's a win texans yeah right it's not ideal i want the grand
12:20slam just
12:20like everybody else wants the grand slam but there there is a um i think this this was a safe
12:26draft for
12:26the texans i think it was a solid draft for the texans and the upside with those three players in
12:31particular uh from a production standpoint i think has has a a real chance and clinton rutledge i would
12:37say it's a culmination of what their approach has been with the offensive line which you like
12:41like it it feels like it's a build-off like i mentioned wyatt teller and the brayden smith
12:46this feels like it's in line with their approach and their thinking to the offensive line this offseason
12:50it sure is
