00:03Hey guys look who's here. Morning Nicole.
00:09Gentlemen, devices away.
00:12We'll pick this up later. Bye.
00:14I brought breakfast. Sweet, what did you bring?
00:17Mini quiches, but don't I go to kiss hello first?
00:20Sorry, good morning grandma.
00:22Good morning to you too. Where's your sister?
00:25Still dead to the world. I didn't mean to say that like that.
00:30No, it's um, it's fine. It's a figure of speech, I get that.
00:34And as a psychiatrist, I understand that sometimes metaphors can bring up unexpected emotions.
00:40But now what? My visit this morning isn't about death or the dreaded C word.
00:47What's it about? I mean, besides mini quiches.
00:51The F word. And F stands for family.
00:57I love their French toast. Sadly, my waistline doesn't.
01:02Anything appeal?
01:04I think I'll just have coffee this morning.
01:08I don't have much of an appetite.
01:11I'm not surprised.
01:13I mean, with everything your family's going through.
01:17Nicole filled me in on Anita's diagnosis and that you'll all need genetic testing.
01:22That's a lot. And Nicole.
01:24Being strong for everybody?
01:25Always.
01:27She'll have to let us be there for her too.
01:30I've only been trying to convince her of that my whole life.
01:33Well, you both can count on me.
01:35How are you coping?
01:38Daddy's beside himself with concern for mother while being his usual patriarch stoic.
01:43Chelsea and Naomi are obviously stunned and worried for their gran,
01:47and they may have to get this testing too.
01:50I didn't ask how the other Duprees were coping.
01:54I asked about you, Danny.
02:00Yeah.
02:24In the dark city.
02:26It's for 1978.
02:30of course i'm happy for you mom i just can't talk right now
02:34because i have the early shift and i'm behind the desk yes
02:38i will call you later thank you
02:43sorry about that my mom just had to call to tell me about a man she met on her cruise
02:48that's fine well i know the bigwigs don't like when we take personal calls on duty so
02:53no it's not so bad as long as it doesn't compromise patient care well that is not what you said
02:59a few
02:59days ago when you were laying into the student nurses different circumstances so if a head honcho
03:05comes in and catches me in the act you're just gonna i'll remind them that we are more than just
03:09our jobs and we nurses deserve the right to live a little too okay i'm sorry but who are you
03:17and
03:17what have you done with sheneesh johnson rn
03:21you uh been up all night usually women don't come floating a hair before lunch just to kill
03:28i don't kill some unless it's absolutely necessary
03:34i'm looking for your boss is he expecting you miss
03:39thomas and he sure as hell better be expecting me since
03:42he's he's the one that who called this meeting well miss thomas i will let him know you're here
03:47you do that sport
04:01don't mind if i do
04:03a little early for scotch isn't it
04:14time zones were invented for a reason
04:18and it's always five o'clock somewhere
04:25if i were you i would take the win and move on celebrate me feeling generous this morning
04:32whatever you say boss
04:36so tell me about jan's new cruise boo
04:40i've been afraid to ask
04:41why
04:43because my mom goes overboard
04:45no pun intended when it comes to having crushes on guys
04:48i mean she just she gets so intense you know like
04:52smothery intense and then she gets her heart broken when the latest man runs for the hills
04:56well maybe this guy will be different
04:58i'm happy for her that she met somebody
05:00you know i guess they don't call it the love boat for nothing
05:02i gotta call mona and get the whole story
05:05since mom tells her bestie all the juicy details she leaves out with me
05:09you were reading
05:11skeptical
05:12it all just seems a little too good to be true
05:15and why
05:16don't tell me you believe in love at first sight
05:19just make sure you monitor while she's in the car
05:21first sight
05:22no
05:23but i am a big believer in finding it in unexpected places
05:29you're here to bring many quiches and give us a lecture on the value of family
05:34i'm confused
05:36i certainly didn't intend to lecture
05:39we know that don't we martin
05:43tyrell why don't you put those in the oven to warm up
05:46sure
05:47and no sampling
05:50you're having issue with my choice of word
05:53just clarifying
05:54you're not here to discuss the c word
05:57but with gran's diagnosis and the implications two generations down
06:03who could think of anything else and it's not like you to distract yourself
06:07there are plenty of people in this town who would bury their heads in the sand in a crisis
06:12i am not one of them
06:13i have always believed in facing facts head on
06:16you know that about me martin
06:17you're right
06:18i do
06:19i walked in and saw three people connected to their devices
06:22not a family
06:24we can't let this diagnosis make us more insular
06:27now more than ever we need to be engaged with each other
06:31i stand corrected
06:33and i'm starting to see your strategy
06:36hence the delicious mini quiches
06:38a gesture
06:39breaking bread together
06:41a bond
06:42i love that you worry about me
06:45and trust me
06:46i know how serious mother's diagnosis is
06:49but this breakfast gesture wasn't about being sad for your grandmother
06:53it's about taking the time to see each other
06:56and show that we care
06:57how can we help
07:00by remembering that long before she was the magnificent anita dupree reigning over fairmont crest
07:07she was anita williams
07:10a scrappy little black girl from the streets of shy town
07:13who sang lead for one of the most popular girl groups of all time
07:19we need to believe in her
07:21we need to know that cancer came for a warrior
07:25and it's about to find out just how tough she is
07:29now you see what you made me do
07:31it wasn't my intention to make you test the limits of your waterproof mascara darling
07:36just looking for some honesty
07:38honestly i am somewhere between composed and cracking
07:41and now that i've said that out loud
07:43i feel not one bit better proving honesty is overrated
07:46you don't believe that at all
07:48it's what you love about your relationship with andre
07:51stop being right
07:53can't help it
07:53i happen to have spectacular judgment in real estate and friends
07:58and since you and nicole are the best friends a gal could have
08:02i'm proving you don't have to put on a fabulous face for me
08:06nicole and i are very lucky to have you on our side
08:10and not for nothing
08:12so is joey armstrong
08:15you brought up his name and it isn't a reprimand
08:18usually you're pointing out how he's not right for me
08:21which is still true
08:22but so is this
08:24joey hit the jackpot with you
08:27and i just hope he's smart enough to see it
08:32what's this for
08:32the hooch
08:35your money's no good here
08:37unless you're gambling
08:39these days i'm more into a sure bet
08:42is that right
08:44indeed
08:46since you asked me here
08:49i'm hoping that that's a sign
08:52that you have some good news for me
08:55well
08:56unless you're one of those sadistic types
08:58who gets awful and
09:00giving bad news face to face
09:04now
09:05if i have bad news to deliver
09:08i have people for that
09:10that way i don't disturb my wah
09:14heaven forget it now what the hell is why
09:17it's a japanese concept meaning peace harmony and balance
09:21well read and well traveled
09:24he gets around so do i
09:30and i'm here because
09:34i'm going to partner with you on financing that free clinic of yours
09:39i knew it
09:41i knew it
09:42don't touch me
09:43okay
09:45now if i'm going to do you this solid
09:49i'm going to want something in return
09:55i'd be a nervous wreck if i had to stand around waiting for those test results
09:59same
10:00your great-grandmother isn't standing around
10:03she is getting on with her life which is the point it is exactly what she wants the family to
10:09do
10:09and we're back to the f-word
10:11and we're back to the f-word
10:11family
10:13and tradition
10:14which brings me to the important task
10:17that i do not want to give short shrift
10:19namely
10:20the tradition of dupree women being presented
10:26to what
10:27your grandmother is talking about the cotillion
10:29where samantha will be presented before polite society
10:34polite society that sounds a little downton abbey-ish
10:38a little but it is so much more than that
10:41you and martin had just started dating when kat had her debut so you didn't attend
10:45i wish i had
10:48really i'm just starting to learn about all the moving parts but it seems like an impressive event
10:53tyrell i can't wait for you and of course samantha to see what the cotillion experience means to
10:58a young black woman on the precipice of her future
11:02yeah that'll be something
11:04tyrell would you please go upstairs and wake up your sister
11:06samantha and i have a lot of work to do
11:10did mrs lansing rest well
11:13she did
11:13the nurse i assigned to her was just in administering her latest round of pain meds
11:18she's healing nicely stitches intact
11:20excellent i'll check on her a little later
11:23oh and uh thank you for your advice about nicole
11:28uh you were right as usual she was in need of a friend
11:32you're a very insightful person nurse johnson
11:35careful doctor such high braise might go to my head
11:40i should pop by mrs lansing room before the pain meds knock her out
11:54you need a throat logins or something
11:56uh no i need you to tell me what's going on between you and dr richardson
12:05i think maybe you better elaborate
12:07so there's no misunderstanding
12:10gladly
12:12i don't think i need to remind you just how expensive an endeavor like this would be for the both
12:18of us
12:18well that much is understood and it's for a worthy cause
12:24nevertheless
12:26if i'm gonna pony up the kind of money that you're talking about
12:32i'm gonna need a substantial return on my investment
12:37oh i get where this is going
12:39do you
12:40you're not the first man i've encountered who suffers from the madonna whore complex
12:49come again
12:51see you want a nice
12:53bread in society lady like vanessa on your arm and out in public
13:01and yet you want a freak in the sheets
13:06like me
13:08my ted t-bear was the same way
13:11and listen i i really wouldn't have minded setting up arrangements like that with you joey
13:16if i hadn't already started something new
13:20oh
13:22you snooze you lose big boy
13:28well i'm starting to see how you managed to sink your talons into nicole dupree's husband
13:34i guess your
13:36tetti
13:37didn't stand a chance did he
13:39no he didn't
13:41in fact most men don't
13:43when it comes to dana leslie thomas
13:46good thing i'm not most men
13:49and i don't need a tug and a tickle
13:51and what i need is something more
13:54substantive
13:56such as
13:58that free clinic of yours
14:00being dedicated to the memory
14:02of the late doug mcbride
14:10i don't know whether to be touched or annoyed that you're still finding time to worry about my relationship
14:16i mean with everything your family's facing
14:19if you make me cry again this friendship is over
14:21okay okay i will not say anything else that will cause more waterworks
14:25but at least tell me you are finding comfort in the sculpted arms of that gorgeous young husband of yours
14:32andre has been great
14:34andre has been great
14:35beyond great
14:36caring
14:37encouraging
14:38attentive
14:39it's it's like he has this sixth sense for when i need him to be right next to me
14:43holding me tight
14:44and when i need space
14:46and bill's been wonderful too
14:48wait
14:48of all people he doesn't need a cameo in this conversation
14:52he is the girl's father and he has been great with them
14:55very present
14:56mm-hmm
14:57what
14:58oh come on danny
14:59you and i both know bill hamilson's happier than a pig in
15:02how'd you used to say it when our kids were small
15:04stressed hormonal irritable and tired
15:06yes
15:07that
15:08happier than a pig in that when he's able to be your personal mr fix-it
15:11okay so the role comes second nature to him
15:14he was always the one to pick me up and put me back together
15:17which would have been nice
15:18if he hadn't always been the one who broke you
15:20no argument there
15:22which begs the question
15:23does your new husband know the og models back to playing knight in shining armor
15:30dr richardson
15:31ted
15:32was just totally flirting with you
15:34can you lower your voice please
15:36okay so now you want to be discreet when the gossip is about you
15:39there is absolutely nothing to gossip about
15:41bull
15:42excuse me
15:42you didn't even blink when he was flirting with you
15:46actually it was like you weren't surprised at all
15:50hold up
15:51are you and ted
15:55don't you have some work to do a little miss thing with all the ideas
15:57actually i'm all caught up on my work
16:00oh
16:01not anymore
16:08arnon
16:10hey uh
16:10good to see you
16:12how you holding up
16:14i've had my moments
16:16i'm just
16:17doing what i can to be there for anita and the family
16:20yeah i suppose
16:22you're doing the same for martin and cad
16:24i am
16:25i just wish there was more i could do while we're anxiously waiting to get the brachagene test results back
16:30no we
16:31won't have to wait a whole lot longer
16:35i just
16:35pray the family is strong enough
16:38come what may
16:39these quiches were delicious
16:43nicole
16:44ah
16:44it lives
16:46haha
16:46you're hilarious
16:47bob
16:48good morning sleeping beauty
16:50morning dad
16:51hi grandma
16:53your grandmother brought breakfast
16:55i'll get some later
16:57oh no you don't
17:00grandma
17:01up you go
17:02early bird catches the worm
17:04i'm having flashbacks
17:05did you ever get to sleep in
17:07with nicole dupree as a mother
17:09rarely
17:10i heard that martin
17:12why are we talking about worms so early in the morning
17:15it's an idiom genius
17:17and it's almost noon
17:18we let you sleep in because your holiday break is almost over
17:22but your grandmother wanted to see you
17:24that's right
17:26we have to buckle down on our cotillion planning
17:33you should have just lied with that
17:34our upcoming debut is all anyone can talk about in the cotillion's group chat
17:40pretty sure the whole town is watching and i'm glowing
17:43not gonna lie i get total aura
17:46excellent i knew you would be just as excited as i am once you found out why i was here
17:51i haven't seen a deb as pumped as you since your aunt cat
17:55i was totally locked in grandma but
18:01i feel kind of guilty
18:04guilty? why?
18:06because of great grandma
18:09isn't it i don't know kind of frivolous to be worried about a cotillion when she could be
18:15dying of cancer
18:19did i hear this right
18:21you want to dedicate our new venture
18:24our new community health facility
18:27to your girlfriend's dead husband
18:31that surprises you?
18:32hell yeah it surprises me
18:34you must really feel guilty about
18:36what went down with mcbride
18:44andre is not concerned about bill
18:48he doesn't do jealousy
18:50and i don't give him reason to
18:51which is very refreshing after being married to bill
18:54that man had the audacity to police every innocuous exchange i had with any male
19:00well it's usually the cheaters who think everyone else is cheating
19:03exactly and it was bill who was being constantly unfaithful
19:07glad you haven't forgotten his armor's more rust than shine
19:10and none of it's charming
19:12oh i remember
19:14listen i know how good i have it with andre
19:16and i do not intend to mess that up
19:18good
19:19now i've got to get going
19:21tell joey i said hello
19:24and what i said before about him being lucky
19:27still stands
19:31i find guilt to be the most useless emotion the gods have saddled us with
19:37why
19:38you let poor dim-witted dr doug rack up a gambling bet in this very casino
19:46then he drove himself into a ravine
19:49three sheets to the wind
19:51on booze from your bar
19:54and then you started getting busy with his widow
20:01and where'd you hear all that
20:03oh i have my sources joey
20:06so you're telling me you're not the least bit remorseful
20:09we all make choices
20:12doug made his
20:14he overestimated his luck and he underestimated the amount of alcohol he consumed
20:20no it's not like i owe you any explanation
20:24but my acknowledging him with this gesture has nothing to do with guilt
20:29it's about honoring the father of vanessa's children
20:33you really do care about her don't you
20:36she's your kryptonite
20:37no i'm no superman and vanessa knows that
20:41now do we have a deal or not
20:44how about a compromise
20:49what if i name a room in the leslie thomas outreach project after the dearly departed dougie
20:59i'm sure finding out that her latest flame has done such a lavish honor
21:06miss vanessa will be won over with major brownie points
21:20i was just in with the hospital chief of staff
21:24oh leah it's good people
21:25yeah the lab was backed up so
21:29she offered to make a few calls to
21:32see if she can get things moving along
21:35and normally i wouldn't ask for special treatment
21:37well you didn't ask she offered
21:39and i hope you would accept i know how proud you the breeze can be
21:44sometimes it's true
21:46i know nicole will be relieved once the test results come back
21:48she's been putting on a brave face for the kids and the grandkids
21:53but i know she's not going to breathe easy until she's certain martin and cat are in the clear
21:58it is quite remarkable to see you still showing up for nicole and the kids
22:05i will never stop showing up
22:07your daughter will always be my family
22:12believe me samantha the last thing your great-grandmother wants is for you to feel bad
22:17about enjoying your debutante season
22:19you really think great-grand wouldn't mind
22:22honey your great-grandmother's family couldn't afford for her to be a debutante
22:26or much else when she was growing up in chicago
22:29even if she had been available for it
22:31she was already on the road with her girls group by the age she would have come out
22:35and then she met your great-grandfather moved to fairmont crest and he took her to her very first cotillion
22:42one of his cousins was being presented
22:46now of course at this point she was the anita williams
22:51former lead singer of the articulates current jazz stylist extraordinaire she knew all about glamour at this point
22:59even still she said she was so mesmerized by all the sheer unadulterated black excellence on display at that cotillion
23:07what do you mean she told annie and me that she saw young black women who didn't have to go
23:12off and sell gold
23:13records like she did for their shot at upward mobility
23:17they gained poise leadership skills had access to educational and philanthropic opportunities
23:24through the debutante program
23:25so it's less about pageantry and more about a path to power
23:30mother swore from that moment on that if she ever had daughters she would make sure that they had the
23:37experience she wasn't afforded
23:38which is why she wanted danny and me to have our debuts
23:41now of course danny didn't because she was off modeling so was chelsea
23:45but naomi had her cotillion
23:48and mom passed that tradition down to cat
23:51and now i am passing it down to you
23:53give me a break
23:54oh son have you lost your mind
23:57hold on martin
23:59go on tyrell
24:03tyrell
24:03it's not just that
24:04you guys are sitting here talking about debutantes and cotillions when real people could care less about those sort of
24:10things
24:10i'm not real people
24:13i mean regular people
24:14ones who don't have house managers or live in pretentious gated communities
24:19tyrell
24:20seriously ty
24:20apologize to your grandmother right now
24:23calm down martin
24:24and that goes for everyone
24:27i asked tyrell for his opinion and he's giving it
24:30i don't mean any disrespect grandma
24:32and i know how hard you and the rest of the duprees work for everything you have
24:37it's just
24:38samantha and i had life way worse than great gran ever did
24:43and there was no singing group to save us
24:46if pop and dad hadn't adopted us
24:49those kind of people that debuted at cotillions
24:52wouldn't want two kids who have
24:54a drug addict for a mother and an absentee father anywhere near them
24:58that's why they live behind the gates
25:06that was fast
25:07really shanice you think i'm gonna forget that you didn't answer my question
25:10which was
25:12what is going on between you and dr richardson
25:14i will not be spilling any personal tea while on duty
25:18since when
25:20i may like to indulge in other people's tea
25:22but when it comes to my own i don't share as much as a teaspoon
25:24come on please i am stranded on a deserted loveless island right now
25:29at least let me live vicariously through your love life
25:31okay fine
25:32if you must know

26:49i feel like a horrible friend
26:51you had no way of knowing that

27:36what god had brought together
27:38let no man especially bill hamilton put asunder
27:42there's a reason they put that in the wedding vows
27:45daddy be serious
27:47all right all right
27:49bill feels comfortable
27:51like an old pair of
27:54well-worn shoes
27:56meanwhile andre
27:58is a shiny new pair of those high-end designer heels
28:02that you and your mother like
28:04louboutins
28:06hamilton is a ratty old pair of sneakers that should have been tossed out decades ago
28:12and andre is louboutins
28:15high-end
28:17slip your feelings into him sweetheart
28:20thank you
28:23anytime
28:24hello beautiful
28:27we celebrating something
28:28i am expanding my reach in the dmv
28:33and not only do i have the dupree's
28:36asking me for my help
28:37for their high-falutin charity events
28:41now i am partnering with mr joey armstrong
28:45on my free clinic
28:48you might want to rethink their partnership
28:51Armstrong isn't someone you want to cross
28:54and neither am i
28:57first thing we're going to be changing is that name
29:00no
29:02guess who
29:04what do i get if i guess right
29:06i'd tell you but it might get us arrested in at least six days
29:17i'll take my chances
29:23no i'm sorry dad but i am sick of him speaking for me
29:27tyrell we may have the same origin story but just because you want to wear it like some tragic martyrs
29:32badge of honor doesn't mean that i do
29:35grandma
29:37i would be honored to follow in your naomi and kat's footsteps
29:41so maybe i wouldn't have had the chance to become a deb if we had stayed in foster care
29:48but i was blessed to be adopted by this family and i do have the opportunity so why shouldn't i
29:55take it
29:55here here
29:57of course you'd take her side
29:59i'm not taking anyone's side but unlike you i'm well versed in what it means to be a deb in
30:05the life of a young black woman
30:07you guys keep emphasizing black women
30:10but didn't bougie black people copy the cotillion culture from europeans
30:14it's as if they thought copying white society would give us the respectability we deserve
30:18how is that working out for us
30:21you're right tyrell
30:22what you're talking about is called respectability politics
30:26yes that right there
30:28our cotillions do have certain similarities to those of our white counterparts
30:32but there is one significant difference
30:36what's that?
30:37our history
30:39our story
30:41the story of a people held down by hundreds of years of slavery
30:45by jim crow by systemic racism
30:47having to flee the south during the great migration
30:50enduring white flight to suburbia which crippled inner cities
30:57even through all of that tragedy
30:59we still managed to triumph
31:02our ancestors built schools and communities
31:05raised respectable children
31:07educated themselves
31:08and
31:09against seemingly insurmountable odds
31:13achieved the american dream
31:16beautifully said nicole
31:19and i hope you were listening closely tyrell
31:21i was
31:23okay that may be true
31:25but do we still need cotillions in fraternities or sororities today?
31:29don't they just continue classicism?
31:32it's an us versus them
31:33haves versus have nots mentality
31:35i've never heard you talk like this
31:37where is this coming from?
31:39straight from the mouth of jessica
31:45tyrell's sweetheart jessica was supposed to be a dev this season
31:49but she's barely been to any of the meetings
31:52you're so obsessed with her that you're living in a headcanon she wrote
31:56spoken like a true elitist in training
31:58i bet once you move behind the gates
32:00you'll forget about all the people from our old hood
32:03that is so not true
32:05tyrell i'm curious
32:06have you or jessica done any research into how organizations like the barrington county deputant society
32:12my divine nine sorority or your pops fraternity give back to the community?
32:17not really
32:18well maybe you should
32:20we also give scholarships to young women who can't afford the fees associated with being a deb
32:25as well as scholarships to college and a lifetime of networking opportunities
32:30and i can't believe you tyrell
32:33jessica has your nose wide open
32:35i get that though
32:36when i met your pop he had my nose wide open
32:40but being the curious type i question him
32:44i push back
32:45but first you decide that you're interested in ucla because jessica's going there
32:50and now her beliefs are your beliefs
32:52have you lost all ability to think for yourself?
32:57tyrell you have given me a lot to think about
33:00yeah?
33:02yes specifically how something like a cotillion can feel to someone who wasn't raised around that sort of thing
33:09maybe a little closed off
33:11even unwelcoming without trying to be
33:13right that's all i was saying
33:16and i'm hoping that i have given you a different perspective
33:19regarding the legacy and strides of the organizations that the duprees are part of
33:25you got me thinking but
33:27honestly i don't think i'll be able to change jessica's mind
33:31well then maybe you should have her give me a call
33:33i could find out what's bothering her and maybe i can ease her mind
33:37you do that for her?
33:38of course it's not a problem
33:40my generation could learn a lot from yours and vice versa
33:44that is if both sides seize the opportunity to listen more than they speak
33:50you've given me a lot to think about daddy
33:52and i promise i will
33:55happy to help
33:57especially since there's
33:59not much i can help with in life right now
34:04i better get home to your mother
34:08love you
34:09love you
34:21wait before you make me forget
34:24i have news
34:26don't leave me in suspense
34:30you're looking at leslie thomas's new partner
34:33god help us
34:34yes
34:35yeah she is something
34:37but i'm going to finance her new free clinic with her
34:42joey
34:43i am so proud of you
34:45not only is it respectable it will help a lot of people
34:49i promise you won't regret this
34:54that sounds an awful lot like a confession
34:56well a confession would imply that i have done something wrong
35:01but i am a law abiding citizen with a squeaky clean record
35:06now being a law abiding citizen and having a squeaky clean record
35:09is two separate things entirely
35:11then what am i confessing to
35:14being linked to a known shady individual
35:17just make sure joey's funding your clinic with funds from one of his legit businesses
35:24if you want to keep that squeaky clean record of yours from being soiled by association
35:29that's why i need you
35:31well i don't mind getting a little dirty every now and again
35:37if it's with the right person
35:40that's good to know
35:43that's why i need you
35:46that's why i need you
35:47like holy water
35:49give me a call when you get this
35:51okay
35:54well going down
35:56oh i am taking the stairs from here on out remember
35:59that won't always be practical
36:01what if there's an emergency
36:05maybe you should take a chance
36:08maybe you're right
36:09you're right
36:11okay
36:29well
36:31well
36:32well
36:33well
36:33well
