David Blough got his "Amon-Ra St. Brown" when the Commanders drafted Antionio Williams in the third round. Williams might be the weapon Washington needs to take the offense to the next level.

00:00Williams, I think, he's special, bro.
00:04So, comes in as a – I was listening.
00:07I thought – I was in the car a lot on Sunday, maybe Saturday.
00:13Denton did a hell of a job whenever – I guess that was Saturday.
00:17Denton Day hosted a whole bunch of draft coverage for 980 on Saturday.
00:22And Denton got, I want to say, Clemson's passing game coordinator on the phone.
00:29And it was really interesting to hear the conversation.
00:34I'm trying to get my man's name.
00:37Kyle Richardson, I believe, was this dude's name.
00:40If I have it wrong, I apologize.
00:43Maybe Tyler Grisham? I don't know.
00:45But he was saying that Williams was a late recruit to Clemson.
00:50That he kind of wasn't on their radar and then just kept working, kept showing up.
00:57But he's not a big guy.
00:59He's 5'11", maybe 5'11 and a half.
01:03But he can separate.
01:05And the way they talk about him from Clemson is really pretty interesting.
01:10He was a freshman All-American when he arrived.
01:13600 yards that year, four touchdowns.
01:18His best season came in 24, where he had 900 yards receiving, 11 touchdowns.
01:24The numbers this past season dipped.
01:27But the numbers on that whole team dipped.
01:29Their quarterback sucked.
01:3155 catches for 604 yards.
01:33If you look at average yards per attempt, which is a pretty good idea of how explosive an offense was.
01:43In college, especially, the levels of explosive offenses.
01:48Think about the scores we see in college football.
01:51I mean, White Bryant, how often does a team score 50 in college football?
01:55It seems to happen all the time.
01:56Yeah, every game in the Big 12.
01:58Right.
02:00Offenses are explosive in college football.
02:02And so, if you try to zero that out to kind of how do you arrive at it, average yards
02:09per attempt can be a pretty helpful tool, right?
02:13And basically, you're asking, like, how often is the ball going down the field through the air?
02:18And I thought this was pretty telling.
02:24If you look at, like, the top 20 in college, Luke Altmaier came in 20th with an 8.8 adjusted
02:36passing yards per attempt, right?
02:388.8 for Luke Altmaier.
02:40Cade Klubnik, the Clemson quarterback, was at 7'6".
02:45Like, that is, I don't want to say bottom of the barrel, because obviously we see some terrible offenses in
02:52college football.
02:54But for the level of explosive athletes they have at Clemson, they really didn't move the ball well.
02:59Klubnik, at Clemson last year, didn't even throw for 3,000 yards in whatever they played, 12, 13 games.
03:06And I'm not here to knock Cade Klubnik, you know, good luck.
03:11But the offense seriously lacked explosion.
03:15Like, why, Brian, you're the biggest college football guy here.
03:17Don't Auburn and Clemson play every year, too?
03:19Isn't that, like, the oldest rivalry or something?
03:21They used to.
03:22Okay.
03:23They haven't played in a couple years, but...
03:25What did you think of the Antonio Williams pick, just as somebody that I know is grinding college football all
03:30the time?
03:30I liked it a lot.
03:31I would have liked the Giants to get him as a Wandale replacement, so I think he'll be perfect.
03:36So, what's interesting is when the Commanders...
03:39They had their pick of the litter at 71.
03:43All these wide receivers we all talked about, they had their pick.
03:48And, like, they could have gone a million directions.
03:51I mean, the Giants traded up for Malachi Fields just a few picks later, which I thought was pretty interesting.
03:57If you look at where Washington picked at 71, there were a couple centers right ahead of Williams that got
04:06picked.
04:07You wonder how that goes if maybe Sam Hecht doesn't get picked?
04:11Like, Sam Hecht, the Kansas State kid, got picked...
04:17I thought just ahead of them.
04:19I'm trying to pull this up right now.
04:22Maybe that was the end of the second.
04:23So, 71, Commanders take Antonio Williams.
04:2774, Malachi Fields.
04:2975, Caleb Douglas, the wide receiver out of Texas Tech.
04:33Keep going.
04:34At 79, the Falcons take Zachariah Branch.
04:38At 80, the Ravens take Jacoby Lane, the receiver out of USC.
04:43This run kept going.
04:44At 83, Chris Brazel from Tennessee goes to the Panthers.
04:48At 84, Ted Hurst, Georgia State, a guy we talked a lot about, goes to Tampa.
04:54I mean, it continued.
04:55Xavion Thomas goes 89 to the Bears.
04:58Like, Chris Bell, a guy that I really liked who is coming back from an injury, goes 94 to the
05:04Dolphins out of Louisville.
05:05Like, Washington had their pick of all these guys.
05:08They started the run.
05:10And I think a lot of fans, right or wrong, look at the last two drafts where there's been a
05:18third and a fourth round receiver in Luke McCaffrey and then Jalen Lane, and there hasn't been a ton of
05:22production.
05:23And they wonder, why didn't you go get a big, clear, outside guy?
05:27Because Williams is not that.
05:29I think in the type of offense that David Blau's going to run, receivers will be in motion a lot.
05:36So he is a slot guy, but I think you'll see him move around all the time.
05:41He'll move around, but I think his separation, the way he separates, and the wiggle he has will help him
05:50out very much in a slot.
05:52And I think the ultimate thing is, like, we say he's not big.
05:56Terry is listed at 6'2", 10.
05:59He wasn't that big when he got here.
06:01Okay?
06:02This dude is listed at 5'11", 190.
06:04I could see him in a year or two being 5'11", 200.
06:09Okay?
06:09Maybe 205.
06:10When you get to the NFL, you start lifting things change up for you a little bit.
06:14But I think when you look at David Blau and you look at where he came from in Detroit, they
06:20utilize their slot guy a lot.
06:22And I understand people that look at the receivers that were drafted.
06:25Listen.
06:28Lane was more of your return guy.
06:31I think that they hope can do some things.
06:33I mean, he could do a lot of different things returning as well.
06:36Lane was brought in to be a punt returner.
06:38Yes.
06:38And he's not a polished receiver.
06:42No.
06:43Maybe that emerges.
06:45It's tricky because the two receivers they took in back-to-back years, Luke and Lane, Luke was a bit...
06:51We heard the term project last week.
06:53Luke was a bit of a project.
06:54He's a converted quarterback that played two years of receiver at Rice.
06:57Yeah.
06:58That's a big transition to the NFL.
06:59True, true.
07:00And the production has not followed.
07:02But he looks like a hell of a kick returner.
07:04Like, I don't want to dismiss that.
07:06But before he got hurt, he was starting to make some plays on the receiver in as well.
07:10But the whole thing comes down to it.
07:12When you get to the NFL, it's not just what you hoped to do or what you were doing.
07:18You got to be able to bring more things to it to make yourself to a point where they can't
07:23just let you go.
07:25So it happens.
07:25You know, Luke was learning the receiver thing.
07:29He's shown what he can do with kick returning.
07:31Take one more step in the receiver room.
07:33See what happens.
07:33But what I love about the whole thing of what they did, Jay, if you look at the rooms that
07:39they drafted people in and things like that, what's going to happen in training care?
07:43Competition.
07:44Bam.
07:44Bam.
07:44And then, listen, I saw, like, when we drafted Bill last year, boom, there's one guy go, man, it's like
07:51they're giving this guy more credit than they're giving Bill.
07:53I said, dude, let that go.
07:55Okay?
07:56What you want is competition.
07:58And when you have competition, the best of the best is going to come out.
08:01And if a guy can't handle competition, hell, you know what I'd say?
08:05Let him go.
08:07You got to learn when guys have to compete at a high level, the best of them come out and
08:12their coaches get to say, this dude here didn't shy away from it.
08:15When you begin to build your team based off of guys that win competition, you win a lot more games.
08:21I think, well said, for me, specifically with Williams, like, we have no idea.
08:32It's similar to what I said about the seventh pick.
08:34They just got to be right.
08:36As long as they're right, who went after him doesn't matter.
08:40And I think if you think about David Blau offense, you think about David Blau's time in Detroit with Ben
08:45Johnson and what they had on the field.
08:47Yeah.
08:50The best case scenario, is anyone at all concerned that Amon Ross St. Brown plays a lot of inside receiver?
08:59No.
09:00Because he's incredibly productive.
09:01Because he balls.
09:02Right.
09:02And just, I don't know anything.
09:05These are very different people.
09:07It's entirely possible Antonio Williams makes less than 30 catches in his NFL career.
09:13Like, I'm allowing for every variance of possibility here.
09:17But I do think it's worth pointing out.
09:19Coming out of the draft, at his official combine measurements, Amon Ross St. Brown, 5'11 1⁄2", 197, 30 3
09:29-8 inch arms, 9 1⁄8 inch hands.
09:34He was graded.
09:35His prospect grade was a 6.21.
09:37Amon Ross went early fourth round.
09:40Antonio Williams coming out of Clemson.
09:425'11 1⁄2", 187, 30 3⁄4 inch arms, 9 1⁄4 inch hands.
09:49A 6.26 grade.
09:52Those combined measurement evaluations of these two players that, in an ideal world, project to be in the same role,
10:00in the same offense, are damn near identical.
10:03See, this is the thing about it, Jay.
10:04This is where fans lose me.
10:08When they start going, oh, he's going to just be a slot.
10:12But when Amon Ross St. Brown started balling, don't nobody ever say it anymore, right?
10:17It doesn't come down to where you play.
10:19If you're in a slot and you catch 100 passes, who gives a damn?
10:23You know what I mean?
10:25If you're outside and you don't get open and don't catch passes, people are mad.
10:30So it doesn't make a difference where you are.
10:32Are you productive?
10:33And I think the whole thing about it is they went to this draft with a feeling of Antonio.
10:40Clearly.
10:40And we have Logan coming on later.
10:41Logan liked him as well.
10:43And I'm sure if Logan liked him, somebody in that room had liked him.
10:47So the ultimate thing to me is get guys in and have them play their best.
10:53It's not the position of where a guy plays or where he was drafted or what he's projected to play.
10:59When he hits the field, does he produce?
