00:19And what real-world effect do they actually have?
00:22Because we hear a lot about sea mines, but I don't think we know the repercussions of them
00:26and how difficult they are to actually sweep and find.
00:30Well, there's many different types of sea mines.
00:32So the ones you'd have seen during the tanker war in the late 80s, they were floating mines,
00:38and you could see those and you could deal with them.
00:40But now there's mines that are ground-based on the seabed that release under hydrostatic pressure when ships go through
00:48them.
00:48So the first problem is trying to see where somebody lays the mines.
00:52They do it at night at other times.
00:53You might not be able to observe that.
00:55The second thing is knowing where those mines are to make sure the shipping pass clear.
00:59And then the third one is how are you going to clear those?
01:01And clearing those, the only way to deal with that in this present state with the Iranian threat
01:08is to use autonomous vehicles or clear and take control of the straits from those and then clear them then.
