00:30Hello, everybody. It's Wednesday, the 22nd of April.
00:34Welcome to the show.
00:35Countdown is ready to get into the groove once again.
00:39So let's not get hung up on your introductions and get straight to it
00:43because, wow, it's been forever since our Guardian of the Dictionary took a holiday.
00:47There's Susie Dent.
00:49He's still quicker than a ray of light.
00:51There he is, Richard Whitehead.
00:52And standing in front of me like a fantastic mathematician
00:58is our Rachel Riley.
01:00Good afternoon to you.
01:02I mean, even I could see that that was a whole load of Madonna songs.
01:05Yes, and the one I didn't mention is her biggest, actually, in terms of sales,
01:11which is Like a Prayer.
01:12So on this day in 1989, both the album and single,
01:15number one in the United States, and even for Madonna,
01:18this was next-level stuff.
01:20I've had a bit more time to think about this.
01:22I think Like a Prayer is her best song, actually.
01:26I think it's probably got the most longevity.
01:29Yeah.
01:29What do you think?
01:30I think if you're at cheese night, you're at a power ballads night,
01:33you can shove, like, a prayer on and everyone's on the dance floor.
01:35Could I also throw out you in that front, Crazy For You?
01:38Yes.
01:39That's what I was going to say.
01:41Yes, is that Susie like that one?
01:42Yeah, I think that's gorgeous.
01:43Yeah, it's a good ballad, it's a good ballad.
01:46Someone will put that in there as well.
01:47Please do.
01:47I definitely can't dance like Rachel, for sure,
01:50but Vogue for me, because I'm always like striker pose, right?
01:53Yes.
01:54Also, the Voguin's all in the arms here.
01:57That's right.
01:57You can Vogue sitting down.
01:58I can do it.
01:59Look at this.
01:59Not a problem at all.
02:01Well, there you go.
02:02Good old chat about Madge as we introduce our new champion.
02:05Hera Raza from Harrow is back with us.
02:08And we can now reveal, some people might have cottoned on,
02:11of course, with a surname,
02:12but your brother Ibrahim was here earlier this series.
02:15Yeah.
02:16I don't know whether there's sibling rivalry,
02:18because he didn't when you're bringing the teapot home.
02:20How's that going to work?
02:24We're competitive, but he is really supportive,
02:27so he was like, no, you can do this.
02:28Oh, brilliant.
02:29So he's very, very happy indeed.
02:31Not as happy as your daughter.
02:33Now, how old's your daughter?
02:34Six.
02:35Right, tell us about your daughter,
02:36because I know that she's a young countdowner.
02:38Yeah, so when I found out I was getting in,
02:42my daughter Zainab started playing with me.
02:45So every time I say, OK, it's countdown time,
02:47she runs, she gets a paper and pen,
02:49she's like, OK, tell me the scores.
02:51Look at that.
02:52Look at that.
02:52Right, well, we'll book her in ten years from now,
02:55she can be on here.
02:57But I wonder how many you'll have won by then.
02:58We'll see.
02:59You're up against Andy Watts today,
03:01who lives in Berkshire, originally from Surrey.
03:03How are you doing, Andy?
03:04Very well, thanks, Colin.
03:05How are you?
03:06Yeah, good, thanks for asking.
03:07I can only ask you about countdown,
03:09because you'd be disappointed if I didn't,
03:11because you're obsessed with countdown, aren't you?
03:14I am, yeah.
03:16I believe you make, like, birthday cards and all,
03:18out of screenshots of words and all this.
03:21I know.
03:21Don't deny it, no, Andy.
03:23I can't deny it, but I feel a little bit shady on Rachel
03:26for having done this.
03:27But if family initials come up, first three,
03:31I'll stop it and get a photo.
03:34So you've graced the fireplaces of several members of the family
03:40on their birthday cards.
03:41Well, I'm very happy to hear it.
03:43Excellent stuff.
03:44Andy, Hera, best of luck to both of you.
03:46APPLAUSE
03:49First round, then, Hera.
03:51Ah, champion chooses first.
03:53The first time for you doing this, off you go.

05:16Earwigs, good spot.
05:17Yes, love that.
05:19Nice, just that though.
05:20All right, nice start though.
05:21Good to get on the board, Andy.
05:22Hera's settled back in as well.
05:24And Mr Watts, you're going to choose these letters.
05:26Hello, Rachel.

06:29Andy.
06:30Let's try mine.
06:32Oh!
06:32Hera?
06:34Er...
06:34Try an eight.
06:35OK, the eight.

06:44No denoters, unfortunately, but desertion...
06:47Oh!
06:48APPLAUSE
06:50Nothing else to add, Mr Whitehead?
06:52Definitely not.
06:53It's a great start.
06:55Right, numbers then, of course.
06:5840 points maximum per show for numbers.
07:00It's so, so important.
07:02Hera, you're choosing.
07:03Can I go for five small, one large?
07:05You can indeed.
07:06You're not gambling at this early stage.
07:09Just the one large one.
07:11Let's see how that pans out.
07:12First one of the day.
07:13Four, five, six, eight, seven.

08:53Something like that.
08:54Yes.
08:55And you won't want to know about the pie reference I don't think.
08:58Because this is a succulent African plant that carries a fetid smell of rotting meat.
09:03Ooh.
09:03Also known as the carrion flower for obvious reasons.
09:07It'd be something you'd bought someone a bunch of those wouldn't you?
09:09Bring them round our house.
09:11Definitely not.
09:12All right.
09:13Very good.
09:13Back to the game then.

12:04And for you, Andy? Raghu.
12:06And Raghu. Nice, Stu. Very different words.
12:08Very different words indeed.
12:10But points nonetheless. Well done to both of you.
12:12Can we do any better? We had a seven with autocar.
12:15An autocar. Which is a bit archaic now, to be fair.
12:18But it's in the dictionary still.
12:20All right, let's motor on then.
12:21Numbers for the second time today.
12:24Let's see what Andy likes to do.
12:27My friend Mark was Sean Locke's biggest fan.
12:30So I'd like to ask for one of his specials, please.
12:33The Seany special. Two large and four not.
12:37We all miss Sean. Here we go.

13:216-3-2, Andy.
13:236-3-2.
13:24And for you, Hera?
13:266-3-2.
13:27Andy, off you go.
13:296-2 is 4.
13:31Yep.
13:32Plus the 75.
13:3379.
13:34And I'm hoping if we times that by 8, we've got 6-3-2.
13:38You do indeed.
13:39And Hera?
13:39Oh, sorry, I've gone wrong.
13:40No worries, Hera, the pressure of the numbers,
13:43but a round of applause for Andy.
13:44Welcome.
13:47A little bit of time to decompress as we have our daily chat
13:50with our Dictionary Corner guest,
13:51the brilliant Richard Whitehead with us.
13:53And it's such an epic story, your career,
13:57and it's just putting it together.
13:58I'm glad we've taken our time,
13:59because I mentioned the importance of dates on Monday,
14:04and London 2012 was just such a seismic moment,
14:09not just for the Olympics here,
14:11but the Paralympics in many ways were reborn
14:13because of the efforts of London.
14:15You went in there with pressure.
14:17You know, you're world champion at that stage.
14:19I remember you being one of, you know,
14:21the poster athletes as well.
14:23Take me back to such an iconic moment
14:26and how you felt about it.
14:27And we talk about the Olympics being the warm-up
14:30for the Paralympics at the Games as well.
14:32And that was the case because London really came together
14:36for that Games.
14:37But even before that, in 2005, in Trafalgar Square,
14:40when it was announced, London 2012,
14:43really did get my thoughts flowing around,
14:47could I be part of this major Games in our country,
14:52and especially at the heart of it in London.
14:55And so then fast-forwarding to then qualifying for the Games
14:59and then getting into the Olympic, Paralympic village
15:04was something that I'll always remember.
15:06I remember the night before my final kind of thinking to myself,
15:11what am I doing here?
15:13How am I going to be the best form of myself?
15:16So the pressure that you're having today
15:18is the same kind of pressure, obviously,
15:20that I had in my Paralympic final.
15:23I went down on the blocks and said to myself,
15:26don't mess this up,
15:28and really expressed myself through the power of sport.
15:32The first 80 metres was around setting up the race
15:36and then exploding on that home straight
15:39and delivering the performance of my life.
15:41And I think sport really does paint that picture
15:44where it's not always about the start or the middle,
15:48but it's definitely about how you finish.
15:51And I remember that moment and I said,
15:55this is not going to be my only one.
15:57And every time I run a marathon, over 100 now,
16:00I have exactly the same moment.
16:02And I want people to embrace sport
16:06and I also want them to be empowered by it
16:09because it's not about finishing first,
16:11it's about what happens after that.
16:13It's amazing if a youngster can meet Richard
16:15and he's met hundreds and hundreds of youngsters
16:17and they're able to go high and they go,
16:19oh, he isn't superhuman, he's a normal human,
16:22I can do that.
16:23That's what it's all about.
16:25It is for sure.
16:25You can see it and you can feel it and you can talk.
16:29Believe and achieve.
16:30Yeah, exactly.
16:31Love it, Richard.
16:32Brilliant, thank you.
16:35Any more of this,
16:36the running shoes might come out after all.
16:39OK, let's get back to this game.
16:42I tell you what,
16:44Hera has not been lapped yet,
16:45but she certainly needs to catch up a little bit
16:47and it's your letters.
16:49Can I get a consonant, please?
16:50Thank you, Hera.
16:51T.
16:52And another.

17:49Hera?
17:50Just a six.
17:52And Andy?
17:52Going to try a seven.
17:54The six, Hera?
17:55Dentist?
17:56He's taking risks, Andy.
17:57A lot of them have paid off, maybe not this one.
17:59Let's find out.
18:00Stunted.
18:00Yeah, absolutely fine.
18:02And, oh, Hera, yours is a seven.
18:06Dentist is a seven rather than a six.
18:08I'm so sorry.
18:12Right, stunted for seven.
18:15Yeah, we've got another seven as well.
18:16Yeah, stunted Hera.
18:20Outside.
18:20But the pressure does get to you and it's about taking a big breath in
18:24and then going for it.
18:26Love it. Right, let's go again, Andy.
18:28Start with a vowel again, please, Rachel.
18:30Thank you, Andy.
18:31U.
18:31And another one.

19:00go to the clock.
19:00And one more, please.
19:09Then go to the clock.
19:09Not again.
19:11Let's go.
19:12To the clock.
19:13See you.
19:13And one more.
19:13And one more.
19:13So.
19:15If you miss them.
19:16To the clock.
19:19Are you,
19:21Yes.
19:21I'm going to have an answer
19:22To the clock.
19:23So.
19:27The clock.
19:29Andy? Just a six.
19:31Hera? Just a six.
19:32The six, Andy? Lava.
19:34Hera, this better not be a seven.
19:36Hertel. Hertel. There you go.
19:38Yeah, we talked about Hertel-ing the other day, weren't we?
19:41We did. Right, the sixes are there.
19:44Richard and Susie, what have you conjured up?
19:46Eight. Yes.
19:48Laughter. Laughter.
19:50Your laughter. Yes. That's it.
19:51And earplug.
19:54That laughter's too loud.
19:55All right. Excellent stuff.
19:58Points all round and another ten up for grabs.
20:00Now, third time on the numbers and Hera gets the choice.
20:04Can I go for two large and four small?
20:06You can indeed. Two from the top and four not.
20:09This time your small numbers are three, eight, five and six
20:15and a large two fifty and twenty-five.
20:19And the target one, seven, three.
20:21One, seven, three. Numbers up.
20:54One, seven, three.
20:55One, seven, three.
20:56Yeah, Andy.
20:58One, seven, three.
20:58Excellent. Ten points for everybody.
21:01Hera.
21:01Um, three times fifty.
21:03Three fifties are one fifty.
21:05Plus the twenty-five.
21:06One, seven, five.
21:07Eight minus the six.
21:09Lovely.
21:10That was straight at it, Andy.
21:12I did twenty-five plus three.
21:14Twenty-eight.
21:15Multiply by six.
21:17Is one, six, eight.
21:18And added on the five.
21:19Another way to get there. Well done.
21:20Nice.

22:00Dexterous was the answer to the tea-time teaser.
22:03And even though there's no connection,
22:05Hera and I bonded yesterday over our love of Dexter,
22:09the TV series.
22:10We had a good old chinwag about that.
22:11That's right.
22:12We got together.
22:13All right.
22:14Hera and Andy are here.
22:17I was talking to Andy during the break as a countdown superfan.
22:20He cannot believe he's on 80 with six rounds to go.

23:33Outran.
23:34Outran.
23:35Richard Whitehead gutted that you saw that.
23:37There was plenty of other sixes you could have went with, Andy.
23:40And sevens, too.
23:41Yeah, go ahead.
23:42What's the sevens?
23:42Because then you would have outrun them.

24:24And another.
24:25L.
24:27And can I get another?
24:29Lastly, D.
24:31Yes, let's play.
24:32I.
24:33And a vowel.
25:00And a vowel, please.
25:03Herra? Just a five? Yeah, and Andy? Yeah, just a five.
25:07Yeah, Herra? Holds. And Andy? Loads.
25:10Yeah, fives and a whole lot of frustration at this side of the studio,
25:15so brighten up our day, come on.
25:17Couple of sixes, we scrambled too. Yeah, we did, yeah, that's it.
25:22Horrid was tough, wasn't it? Yes, horrid and oldish.
25:26Oldish! Oldish! I quite like that, you know?
25:28We only ever really describe people as young or old, don't we?
25:32We do. Oh, I'm old. I'm not going to ever say I'm old again.
25:35Ha! Oldish.
25:3791.33, four rounds to go, origins of words.
25:41Susie, here we go today. What are we talking about?
25:44Well, it's an interesting question from Brian Vincent,
25:48who is a regular correspondent.
25:50He would like to know where Prime Minister comes from.
25:54Not only that, when was it first used and why?
25:59And so, I have to say, I took a dive into the history books,
26:03because it seems quite obvious on the surface of things,
26:05but it's not what you think, really.
26:07So, it's a story of a kind of job title, really,
26:09that existed long before it became respectable, as you'll see.
26:14So, apparently, if you go back to the English Civil War,
26:18parliamentarians hurled the term as an insult,
26:21and that was at advisers that they thought were too close to the king,
26:24too close to King Charles I.
26:26So, just to break it down, prime comes from the Latin primus, meaning first.
26:30And the minister you might be surprised by,
26:32because it goes back to the Latin and is a sibling of minus, meaning less,
26:40because a minister originally was the lesser one,
26:42because they were standing in for someone else.
26:44They weren't the prime person.
26:46They were simply acting on behalf of someone else.
26:49So, the Romans distinguished between the magister, who was the master,
26:52and the minister, who was the lesser one, if you like.
26:55And so, when parliament sort of talked about a prime minister,
26:58the inference really was that somebody had just become too big for their boots,
27:03and they had too much influence over the person in charge.
27:07And so, for a long time, no-one wanted to be called prime minister at all.
27:10And it was used really insultingly against Robert Walpole, for example,
27:15because he was, again, considered to have too much influence.
27:18So, he carefully avoided that title,
27:20and his enemies called him the prime minister.
27:23But then the title became more and more respectable over time,
27:27but, again, only through practice, not through law.
27:29So, there was no specific statute that allowed for the job description
27:35of a prime minister.
27:36And it really came into current usage in a neutral way in the late 19th century,
27:41and it only received official recognition in the law books in 1905,
27:47which is incredible.
27:48So, it's quite a journey from something that started off as a bit of an insult,
27:52used disparagingly for somebody who was a fawning flatterer, if you like,
27:58to someone who obviously holds one of the biggest titles in the land.
28:01Lovely stuff. Thank you, Susie.
28:03APPLAUSE
28:05Four rounds to go on. Andy, you're going to pick these letters.

31:09Two more rounds to go.
31:10Well, Andy could put up a monster score.
31:12Wouldn't be a top score of the series.
31:14But be right up there, of course, if you can add 20 more points.

33:16Oh, no last gasp.
33:19A guest and no points handed out in the final two rounds of Countdown today.
33:24We needn't have bothered.
33:26Let's have a look at the answer.
33:29Chinaware.
33:30Yes, Susie just said exactly where I was stuck the whole way through.
33:34I was like, is there such a thing as a chair, Wayne?
33:37There must be.
33:38There must be, but no, no such luck.
33:41Well, Andy, this must be, as someone who's watched Countdown all my life
33:45and is a super fan, this must be, like, dream come true territory right now.
33:51Absolutely.
33:52I might have set the bar a bit high for tomorrow, though.
33:55No, no, no, because it fell a little bit in the last two rounds.
