00:07Might be game on for something here.
00:09It's just gone. Go, go, go, go.
00:12Patrol some of the country's most dangerous roads.
00:15Speed is 4-0. Vehicles all over the road.
00:19Driving head-on.
00:20He's up the kerb.
00:21Into danger.
00:22They just have warning markers for firearms.
00:25Vehicle's stolen.
00:26Get out of the car!
00:28Wow, gun.
00:29Designed to look like a mobile phone.
00:31Don't pull away, fella.
00:33With rising crime rates.
00:36Officers are under pressure.
00:38Stop! Get out of here!
00:40You're doing it!
00:41Come out of here now!
00:42You're under arrest.
00:45Police!
00:46With lives on the line.
00:47We're going to need at least three or four ambulances.
00:51Is it fuel?
00:52Right, move away from this car now!
00:54The stakes are high.
00:56It isn't looking good at the minute.
00:57For the traffic cops.
00:59You've flown 128.
01:0011 minutes past two in the afternoon.
01:02You're under arrest.
01:03Suspicion of theft of motor vehicles.
01:05Do not run!
01:07Smack the officer!
01:09Another problem!
01:10All right.
01:14Coming up.
01:15This vehicle is failing to stop drunk and drugged drivers.
01:19And it's a crash, crash, crash.
01:21Mate, have you had anything to drink tonight?
01:23Or drugs?
01:25Over the limit.
01:26Yeah, Mark, one mile driver.
01:29Keep breathing.
01:30Load through the tube.
01:32And out of control.
01:35137.
01:35The legal limit is 35.
01:39Final warning, chap.
01:41Door's going in.
01:42Stand back.
01:42Suspects endangering lives.
01:46It's alleged you've been involved in a collision with a child.
01:50And putting officers at risk.
01:52Where's your car, Martin?
01:53With the flip of the switch, I could lose my job for trying to do the right thing.
02:14N.A. Oscar Tango 1-4.
02:16Can I trouble you for a 10-15 code to vehicle check, please?
02:20Can I have?
02:21Yeah, thank you.
02:22It's showing no insurance, expired M.O.T.
02:25No registered keeper, notified off-road.
02:29Say, Leon in grey.
02:31M.O.T. expired 26th of June last year.
02:34Insurance not held.
02:36Yeah, Tango 1-4 received.
02:38I shall go and have a look for it.
02:42Near Derby, traffic cop Martin Carter is looking for an uninsured car.
02:47So I'm just trying to catch up with a vehicle that's activated ANPR cameras.
02:52It's the early hours of the morning, so it should be quite easy to pick off.
02:56Ten minutes later...
02:59Ten minutes later...
03:00A Oscar Tango 1-4.
03:04Martin spots the wanted car.
03:07I've got contact with my target vehicle.
03:12The vehicle is currently at a red traffic signal.
03:16I'll pull in front of it and put a follow me message on.
03:21But before Martin has a chance to get in front...
03:26NA Oscar Tango 1-4.
03:28The driver speeds off.
03:30This vehicle is failing to stop.
03:32Confirm.
03:33Failing to stop.
03:35Advanced driver.
03:36Pursuit management.
03:37TPAC trained in a high-performance, fully-marked vehicle.
03:40Identity of the driver is not known.
03:42Number of occupants is unknown.
03:45Requesting authority to continue pursuit.
03:48Call my name, CO2.
03:50Thank you for your country.
03:50Pursuit can continue.
03:52This vehicle is weaving between lanes.
03:55Speed currently 9-0.
03:57DRA is medium.
04:00This person doesn't want to stop.
04:02He's all over the road.
04:03And that, to me, raises alarm bells.
04:06Are they under the influence of something?
04:09Could heighten the risk.
04:10NA, can we get air wash units with stingers, please?
04:13And Derby units with stingers on standby?
04:16No worries, thank you.
04:17I'll let you know.
04:18Stop that one.
04:20With fears the driver may be drunk or drugged,
04:23multiple units race to assist.
04:28NA, this vehicle is slowing down, it's slowing down.
04:32Vehicle has come to a complete stop on the A52.
04:35Not sure of his intention.
04:37I'm going to pull alongside him.
04:42I'm thinking, this chap's giving up.
04:44He's chosen to end this pursuit.
04:46He's putting his hands up and it's the end of the game.
04:52Vehicle is off, off, off again.
04:56Speed increasing, 7-0.
04:59I've been involved in pursuits before with drivers
05:02that are under the influence of drugs
05:03and it can affect their decision-making.
05:06Vehicle's heavy on the brakes.
05:08Driving could become more erratic and a lot more dangerous
05:11because they don't see risks.
05:13And now the vehicle is off, off, off.
05:15DRA is medium.
05:17Vehicle nearly loses control.
05:20And it's a right, right, right.
05:23Speed increasing, 5-0 and a 3-0.
05:28You've got to remain calm.
05:30You've got to take your breath
05:31and ensure that you yourself don't get drawn into the excitement
05:34and the adrenaline rush.
05:36We're currently 8-0 and a 4-0.
05:38Vehicle's heavy on the brakes, heavy on the brakes.
05:40Standby.
05:41And it's a right, right, right.
05:44Vehicle's swerving all over the road.
05:46And now you confirm we've got a Stinger unit up ahead, please.
05:49Oh, yes, I need to stand up for Stinger.
05:51Just serve your mouth for hardcore, please.
05:55I need to stand up for 2-3.
05:57You've got Stinger set up on main road.
06:00Vehicle is slowing.
06:05Share 2, monitor.
06:07Vehicle is still all over the road.
06:09It is a left, left, left.
06:12I can see a Stinger unit in the distance.
06:15Standby.
06:20Contravene to a people-off bollard.
06:22He's avoided the Stinger.
06:26Vehicle is right, right, right.
06:31And now this vehicle is taking off 6-0 in a 3-0 over speed bumps.
06:38This vehicle is going to lose control in a minute.
06:43The driver speeds down the back streets at twice the limit.
06:47NA, this vehicle is now out of sight.
06:49From NA-C02, in light of that, can we abort, please?
06:52Abort.
06:53Out of control, the vehicle slams into a parked car.
07:02NA, Tango 1, Provocacy.
07:03Hazard lights in the distance.
07:07Standby.
07:11And it's a crash, crash, crash.
07:14By the time Martin catches up, the car has ricocheted into a house.
07:20Sure, too, that's been done.
07:21Lovely now.
07:26NA, can we have EMAS, please?
07:28Yes, she has.
07:30The scene is absolute carnage.
07:33There's bricks everywhere.
07:35There's cars smashed up.
07:36There's smoke coming out of the subject vehicle.
07:39Units to my location, please.
07:41ASAP.
07:42Yes, everyone, state six now.
07:45Yeah, NA person is trapped in the vehicle, driver and passenger.
07:49I approach the driver's side and see that the door's wedged shut and I can't open it.
07:55The driver's still in the driver's seat and doesn't appear to be moving, which raises my concerns immediately.
08:00Then walk around to the front passenger's side.
08:03They're going to do some local here as well.
08:06There's carnage everywhere, chaos, and I'm concerned that they might have some serious injuries.
08:11Is he talking to you?
08:14Passenger?
08:15Driver?
08:16Are you talking?
08:17Can you hear us?
08:20Coming up...
08:21We've got one trapped, serious leg fractures.
08:25As emergency services race to rescue the driver and passenger, Martin is placed under investigation.
08:32Where's your car, Martin?
08:35Keep going! Keep going!
08:37And a suspect driver...
08:39Is out of control on the motorway.
08:43How you think you can drive on the motorway with all these other people is beyond me.
08:48Your behaviour was disgusting.
09:02This vehicle is weaving between lanes.
09:05Speed currently 9-0.
09:07The DRA is medium.
09:09Minutes after a pursuit of a possible drug driver.
09:14And this vehicle is taking off 6-0 in a 3-0 over speed bumps.
09:20At 2.30 in the morning, the driver speeds down a residential street.
09:24This vehicle's going to lose control in a minute.
09:29And crashes into someone's house.
09:32Stand by.
09:33And it's a crash, crash, crash.
09:37Trapped inside the car are two brothers.
09:41Is he talking to you?
09:42Yeah.
09:43Passenger?
09:44Driver?
09:45Are you talking?
09:46Can you hear us?
09:48The driver's talking, conscious and breathing.
09:51Mate, I'm going to smash this window, cover your eyes, alright?
09:56Before you move.
09:57You alright, mate?
09:58Can you hear me?
09:59Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait.
10:01Before you move.
10:02Wait before you move.
10:03Wait before you move.
10:04How's your back?
10:05Firearms officers with medical training are also on scene.
10:09Your mind switches from enforcement mode to medical assistance mode.
10:14What can I do to help this person?
10:16Where have you got pain, mate?
10:18Have you got a seatbelt on?
10:19Are you okay?
10:20Where's the pain?
10:21Is he trapped?
10:22He is trapped, mate, yeah.
10:24And if you haven't already, I think we might need fire service to this job.
10:28Stay in the car.
10:28Stay in the car.
10:30Where's your pain?
10:33Head.
10:33Head.
10:34A giant subwoofer from the boot appears to have flown through and been wedged between
10:38the driver and his passenger.
10:39Let's take this out, mate.
10:41Alright, stay in the car.
10:42Stay in the car.
10:42Stay in the car a minute.
10:45We've got two.
10:46One trapped.
10:48Second one, not trapped, however, serious leg fractures at the minute.
10:52Trying to get out of the car.
10:53We could do with at least another oxygen.
10:57Mate, I want you to stay in the car because I don't know what injury you've got to your back.
11:00Don't try and move.
11:01Don't try and move, mate.
11:02Don't try and move.
11:03Stay where you are.
11:04Here you are.
11:05Stick this on him.
11:05Give him some O2.
11:07What's his heart rate like, mate?
11:08And his pulse.
11:09He has speed.
11:10He's racing.
11:12We've got all the neighbours that get woken up, the people whose house has been damaged
11:16get woken up.
11:17Are you alright to just go back inside for me, please?
11:20Everybody starts coming out wanting to know what's happening.
11:22Listen, there's people trapped in a car.
11:24I'm just asking you to just go back in your house.
11:27Cars that he's crashed into, smashed to bits.
11:29And it's like someone's dropped a bomb in a street.
11:34Hey, all.
11:35This vehicle's been involved in a pursuit.
11:36Driver's trapped.
11:38Yeah.
11:38Passenger is not trapped.
11:39Yeah.
11:40But he's got two open fractures, both clearly broken, both of his legs.
11:43Yeah.
11:44And that's all we've got in a minute.
11:47As the fire service prepares to cut the men out, the passenger's condition deteriorates.
11:55This lad's in and out of consciousness just a bit.
11:57So we could do with having him out first, really.
12:00I just want to defib ready for him.
12:03Get the oxygen on, mate.
12:04They're just cutting the roof off.
12:06He's also showing signs of confusion.
12:09Just wait for your legs.
12:10Your legs are broken, mate.
12:12Yeah.
12:13Both of them.
12:14Oh.
12:15He's been in a car crash, mate.
12:17Mate, have you had anything to drink tonight?
12:19Or drugs?
12:21You should don't see him with it, mate.
12:22Have you had a drink?
12:24No.
12:26He's trying to go.
12:29The passenger says he's been taking drugs.
12:32I don't need anybody else out at the scene.
12:34Could you go and shut me the road off either end?
12:36That's all right.
12:38Martin's team sergeant arrives to take charge.
12:41We just organised some locals to get some tape up,
12:44just so not the members of the public are walking through.
12:45Here you do.
12:47Where's the ambulance?
12:48Oh, they're back.
12:50These two of our ALV lads are actually doing some treatment,
12:53trying to get some screen killing.
12:56As medics arrive to help rescue the men,
12:59a crash investigation gets underway.
13:02After the identified injuries or potential injuries
13:05in the fact of police pursuit,
13:07we're going to need FCI's out.
13:09Guys, can you do me a favour?
13:10Yeah.
13:11From here up, could you just do me a record
13:13and see where it's got ring doorbells and CCTV?
13:15Yeah.
13:15And note it down for me to see if anybody's up on your seat, honey.
13:21Don't know if you're all right, mate.
13:22It'll be fine, yeah?
13:23Yeah?
13:24Sure.
13:24Yeah.
13:25In pursuits like this, as soon as it's become to a conclusion
13:28and it's been established these people have got serious injuries,
13:32what's going through my mind is that I'm now going to be faced
13:35with some intense scrutiny.
13:36Where's your car, Martin?
13:38Have you, erm, took your dash cam car out?
13:41You just do it, you just don't get over it.
13:44Martin is now officially under investigation
13:46and relieved from duty.
13:49You can't really explain or describe to someone how that feels
13:53when you are dedicated to the role that you do
13:56in trying to make the roads safe and keep the public safe
13:59to then be faced with scrutiny.
14:02Keeps from my car.
14:04Hi.
14:05This is there.
14:06Dave says leave it here.
14:07Yeah, it's fine, we'll sort it.
14:09So, I just don't want you around here, mate, while they're sorting us up.
14:15Martin Carter is obviously the pursuit car.
14:17His vehicle's still in situ, but I've taken him out of the way.
14:20All right, boss, cheers then, thank you.
14:23His dash cam's seized as evidence.
14:26Martin will be driven back to Ripley Station by another officer.
14:30With the flip of a switch, I'm now in a position
14:34where I could lose my job, my pension, my livelihood and my career
14:39for trying to do the right thing.
14:41Having said that, that is the life of a police officer,
14:45in particular traffic cops,
14:47we are at risk of investigations and scrutiny
14:51because we are the ones that mainly are involved in high-speed pursuits.
14:55Tom, three, we'll slide.
14:57One, this way, mate.
14:58Two, three.
14:59Well done.
15:02With the two brothers now out of the car,
15:05they'll be rushed to hospital under police supervision.
15:09I've got a section going to hospital.
15:10Will you go down and see if you get any bloods off him?
15:13Do that, mate.
15:14The driver's blood will be tested for drugs and alcohol.
15:19With forensic collision investigators on the way.
15:24For Martin, it's now a case of waiting.
15:29I'm now not going to be able to fully be myself as an operational cop
15:33whilst this investigation takes place.
15:36Ultimately, you've got to bring it back to the code of ethics.
15:39What would the public expect us to do?
15:41If they see someone driving dangerously and erratically,
15:44would they expect a police officer to try and stop that person
15:47and detain them or just let them go?
15:51That we continually risk assess pursuits and unfortunately,
15:54they don't always conclude safely.
15:58And sometimes they do end in collisions where people have serious injuries.
16:03And it's a fine balance of trying to do the right thing.
16:07Martin now faces several weeks of uncertainty as the investigation continues and while the suspects recover from their injuries.
16:18So this for the driver was a moment of madness that's resulted in a high-speed collision where serious life
16:25-changing injuries have been sustained.
16:28And unfortunately, he's going to have to live with that moment of madness.
16:31And now it's going to change people's lives forever.
16:34For me, the level of scrutiny goes from I'm the good guy chasing the bad guy to I've caught the
16:40bad guys,
16:41but now I'm being investigated to see if I've done anything wrong.
16:55I've got a report of a possible DIC, a drink driver.
16:59Vehicles are currently all over the road, swerving between lanes.
17:02If there are any units in the area that can keep an eye out for it, please.
17:07The high number of drink and drug drivers put traffic cops like Alex Head under constant pressure.
17:14Yes, yes. Just on the 617 up to heading up there now.
17:20Near Chesterfield, Alex and three other units are looking for a suspected drink driver in a transit van.
17:28Drink drivers come from all walks of life.
17:30You don't need to be some chaotic homeless person.
17:34You could be a company director.
17:36It's people who are making stupid life choices and deciding to get behind the wheel of a car
17:40and then drive when they're extremely intoxicated.
17:44Every year, around 57,000 people are charged for being over the limit for alcohol and drugs.
17:52After seeing first-hand the impact that they cause to families when it goes wrong
17:57and they end up hurting somebody, I've got no sympathy for them.
18:01People know not to drink drive, but they just choose to do that anyway and ignore the law.
18:08In fact, he's here, look.
18:12Up ahead on the motorway, traffic cops Chris Wells-Jackson and Jack Pressland spot the van.
18:20And it is committed, committed M1-0, 29.
18:24It's back to lane one, speed 55.
18:27It's been weaving around this place, which will be consistent with the reports that we've got.
18:33Forgetting to indicate, braking unnecessarily, swerving between lanes, speed fluctuating between fast and slow.
18:41So they're little tell-tale signs of someone who might be intoxicated.
18:46Alex races to join Chris and Jack.
18:51Just passing Temple Normanton now, Chris.
18:53So they're just coming up to Junction 29, so hopefully we should just meet them just in time.
19:00Luckily, we've got a few units around.
19:03The decision's made just to put a compliance stop in.
19:05Chris will go in front with a follow-me board and we'll go behind it,
19:09so sort of force it off the motorway should it attempt any silly business.
19:13Alex, I'll give you a shout.
19:15I'm just on the entry slip.
19:17We're coming under D second on the fifth overbridge.
19:20Yeah, received.
19:21Yeah, if you want to look at joining, Pete, we'll just start to come past the bottom of the entrance,
19:25wouldn't it?
19:30As the van passes the junction, Alex slots in behind Chris and Jack.
19:37So at times like this, we want to be bunched up, really close together.
19:42If we get to my mark at 29 Alba, I'll be able to follow me.
19:47Yeah, received.
19:54They move into position, ready to box in the van.
20:00Speed still remains 6-0.
20:02There we go.
20:04The vehicle remains the plane too.
20:06Just to look for the mile marker now.
20:09Just to go ahead and put the bottom here.
20:12As Chris pulls around the van, Jack gets alongside.
20:33Keep going!
20:35Keep going!
20:36Go!
20:37Go!
20:39Coming up.
20:40Pull over in here now!
20:42In here!
20:43Alex is forced to stop traffic on the M1.
20:46Keep your hands where I can see them.
20:47As Jack moves in for an arrest.
20:50I think you're very drunk.
20:51No, no, no.
20:53And after a child is knocked down.
20:56Right, what hurts?
20:58The hunt is on for a missing driver.
21:00You're under arrest on suspicion of driving whilst unfit.
21:03Through a drink or drugs?
21:04Through a drink or drugs, OK?
21:25On the M1, officers are tailing a suspected drink driver.
21:31Yeah, looks like one male driver.
21:34The vehicle's gone flying.
21:36We've been throwing one and it just lost me.
21:38It's like knowledge.
21:43It's slowed down a lot, hasn't it?
21:45While traffic cop Alex Head holds the traffic back.
21:48Keep going!
21:50Keep going!
21:51Go!
21:53Colleagues Chris and Jack are trying to direct the suspect to an exit road.
21:58Chris has got his follow me board on.
22:00The driver is just slowing down.
22:03It's so frustrating when they're doing things like this.
22:06Because all they need to do is keep up and follow the car in front.
22:10But this driver's just away with the fairies.
22:13We're now at 30 miles an hour on the M1.
22:15A busy period of the day.
22:17Pull over in here now!
22:19In here!
22:22What's he doing?
22:23Acting like an idiot.
22:27Jack, dive into the CRA.
22:31Alex, keep your safety up.
22:33PHONE RINGS
22:36Contact highways.
22:37Get a lane one closure on, please.
22:45Smell alcohol a little bit, mate.
22:46Have you had a drink?
22:48Now that we've got that vehicle stopped, the smell coming from that vehicle is immense.
22:54Yeah.
22:54You've had a drink?
22:55Yeah, yeah.
22:56Just pass us your phone in two seconds.
22:58Keep your hands where I can see them.
23:00Do as you're told.
23:01Jump out and come and take a seat in our car.
23:03Mate, just put the d*** on you for now, OK?
23:05There's more time you're detained, OK?
23:08But I just...
23:10I think you're very drunk.
23:12No, no, no.
23:12Not very drunk.
23:14No.
23:14But I just...
23:18Stop talking, it's best interest.
23:21He's talking like he's drunk.
23:23He's not with it at all.
23:26How he thinks he can now drive a vehicle on a busy part of the lawn,
23:31at a busy time of the day, it's just disgusting, really.
23:35Idiot.
23:37Absolute whopper.
23:39Take your seat in there, my friend.
23:41Yeah, no.
23:43I'd like to...
23:45Deep breath in.
23:46I'm going to ask you to put...
23:47Blow through this tube, OK?
23:49Deep breath in.
23:50Blow through the tube.
23:51Blow, blow, blow, blow.
23:52Blow harder, harder, harder, harder, harder, harder.
23:55Harder, harder.
23:55Thank you very much.
23:59How much?
24:04137.
24:04All right.
24:05The legal limit is 35.
24:08All right.
24:08That is disgusting that you think you can be driving...
24:10Yeah, you're damn right.
24:11I'm going to be leaving them.
24:12The driver is nearly four times the legal limit.
24:16Right now, listen to me.
24:18OK?
24:19OK?
24:20Listen to me.
24:21Just be quiet.
24:22The time is now.
24:24Two minutes past eight.
24:25You are on arrest on suspicion of driving a motor vehicle...
24:27Yeah, that's right.
24:28...whilst over the prescribed limit of alcohol.
24:29Shush!
24:30No, no, no.
24:31You're coming with me now.
24:32We're going to this police station.
24:34Yeah, I will go.
24:35OK.
24:36You come with me.
24:36No, no, no, no.
24:37You come with us.
24:38Yeah, no problem.
24:39You come with me.
24:41Don't worry.
24:42You want a motorway?
24:55You come with me.
24:55Yeah, you can see.
24:56It's busy.
24:57This guy's flown 137.
25:00This isn't just a few pints over.
25:02This is...
25:02He's been drinking heavily all day.
25:05And then he thinks he can drive a three and a half ton long wheelbase van with all these
25:10people.
25:10We could be dealing with a fatal.
25:12So, it's a good job we've got him stopped.
25:14I'm glad that he's going to get banned.
25:16And we'll see what happens down in custody.
25:19It's unbelievable.
25:20Unbelievable.
25:22Right, I've got your phone.
25:31What have you been drinking today?
25:34What have you been drinking today?
25:36Yeah, whiskey.
25:37Whiskey.
25:38Yep.
25:52I get so annoyed at drunk drivers because there's such a clear message out there.
25:56It's been publicised for decades now.
25:59Let's just go this way.
26:00This way.
26:02What's that?
26:03That's a wing mirror.
26:04And we see first hand the impact that has on people's lives when they go and kill somebody.
26:09Right.
26:10Take a seat on this bench.
26:11Hang on.
26:12Two seconds.
26:12Or kill themselves or kill someone of their friends in the car who's travelling with them.
26:17Take these off here.
26:19The amount of people's lives that get destroyed and shattered from one person's selfish act.
26:27Each year, around 300 people in the UK are killed in collisions with drink drivers.
26:33Take a seat for me please.
26:35Yeah.
26:35Yeah.
26:35No problem.
26:38Oh, surprise, surprise.
26:40You've been drink driving in the past, haven't you?
26:42Yeah.
26:43Yeah.
26:44Okay.
26:45Didn't learn your lesson then.
26:49Alex takes the driver for an evidential breath test, which will be used in court.
26:56Is it your blue road sign?
26:571-3-7.
26:59I can smell it.
27:00Yeah.
27:02Keep going.
27:03Keep going.
27:03Keep going.
27:04Keep going.
27:04Keep going.
27:04Keep going.
27:05Keep going.
27:05No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no,
27:07no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
27:07Stop.
27:08Excellent.
27:10Okay, 1-4-4-4 and 1-4-5, so very high.
27:13The fact that the driver's blood alcohol reading is still increasing suggests his last drink was recent.
27:19When you last got arrested for drink driving, what reading did you have?
27:24I think it's 1.30.
27:271.30? I think so.
27:30So you're what we call a high-risk road user. You're a danger to society.
27:36Nearly 40% of drivers breathalysed provide readings of more than double the legal limit.
27:43I had a cousin that was drink driving once.
27:45He didn't do it again because he put his car into a brick wall, killed his mate, killed himself,
27:51and there was another of his friends in the back seat.
27:54So I see how it affects lives, mate.
28:01It's goes on the nose in this order.
28:041-4-4, 1-4-5.
28:07You're going up? Yes. I've not searched him fully yet.
28:11Over the last ten years, nearly 30,000 people have received more than one conviction for drink driving.
28:19There's no words, really, are there?
28:21It's pretty much the bottle of whiskey I love had to get that sort of reading.
28:25Good job got him stopped and it should get substantial disqualification period now.
28:30Potentially even some prison time, so...
28:32Well, it's up to the courts now.
28:53There's been an autistic on a child on a bike that's been hit by a car, has a heavy injury
28:57and is bleeding.
28:59Yeah.
28:59Have we had parents with a child or anything like that ringing?
29:02And do we know how old this child is?
29:04Keeps are saying that the father of the child spoke to Cleveland.
29:07It's a nine-year-old child.
29:09They've got ambulance travelling also.
29:11Yeah, proceed.
29:13Traffic cop Matt Cork is responding to a collision on the outskirts of Derby.
29:19So we're on the route to reports of an RTC car V child.
29:24There's some suggestion that a nine-year-old child has been knocked off and pushed by a bike car.
29:28And there's also some suggestion that the driver of that car is under the influence of alcohol.
29:35I believe at the moment that the driver is still on scene.
29:40Around 300 children are hit by drivers under the influence of alcohol each year.
29:52It is dangerous.
29:53It causes loss of lives.
29:54It causes serious injury.
29:55It causes heartbreak to families.
29:57Unfortunately, it continues to grow.
29:59My sister-in-law had a drink and drug driver go straight into the back of her at 90 mile
30:04an hour down the A38.
30:07It wrote her car off and it took a number of years before she got the confidence about behind the
30:10wheel on fast roads.
30:15As Matt arrives, the boy hurt in the collision is at the side of the road with his family and
30:21neighbours.
30:222886.
30:27Hello, chap.
30:29Are you witness driver?
30:30Yeah, I've witnessed it.
30:31Right, okay, Gran.
30:32Which...
30:32Where's the...
30:33Has driver gone?
30:34The driver's gone.
30:36Right, okay.
30:36He did give me his name.
30:38Yeah.
30:38There's a gentleman in the white T-shirt.
30:40I think he's in one of the houses.
30:41He did get the registration plate.
30:43Right, okay.
30:43Gran, thank you.
30:44I'll come back to you, mate.
30:46And hey, driver's left scene, apparently.
30:48I'm here with child.
30:49Hey, what, mate?
30:50How are we all?
30:51Okay.
30:51Yeah.
30:52Uh, right.
30:53What hurts?
30:55My...
30:55My...
30:55My head.
30:56Yeah.
30:57Okay.
30:59Um...
30:59Other than that, can you still wiggle all your toes and bits like that?
31:03Are you still able to walk at all?
31:05Not too much.
31:07No.
31:07Hurts.
31:08Yeah.
31:10Don't try and walk.
31:11It's alright.
31:12I just want to see if you can move your leg and things like that.
31:14So we can weight bear on it.
31:15Is it just here that hurts?
31:18Okay.
31:19You've got...
31:19The back of your head.
31:20The good thing is, we've got no bones poking out, have we?
31:23He's bleeding.
31:25Minor at the minute.
31:26Just going to touch your head, okay?
31:28Just want to check that we're not bleeding or anything like that.
31:31Yeah, we've got a bit of a bump on the back there, haven't we?
31:34I take it you didn't have a helmet on.
31:37Right.
31:38So what...
31:38What's happened?
31:41What happened then?
31:42Where were you?
31:43I just...
31:44Colonel Rhymes, I want to go there, just crash me.
31:46Right.
31:47Where...
31:47Were you on the road or were you on the path?
31:49I was on the road there.
31:51On the road there, outside the bus stop.
31:53So he's come from that way?
31:55Yeah.
31:55And he's driving that way?
31:56Yeah.
31:56What did he say afterwards?
31:58Nothing.
31:59Let's go.
31:59Right.
31:59Okay.
32:00Do you know, does your mum and dad know that you're here?
32:03Yeah.
32:04Yeah?
32:05Hiya guys, you alright?
32:06My main concern is that bump on the back of your head and just getting it checked out.
32:09Alright?
32:10Yeah.
32:11Yeah.
32:12Right.
32:13Going forward, we need to make sure we have a helmet on.
32:16Okay.
32:17As the paramedic arrives, Matt returns to the witnesses across the road.
32:23From what you've seen then, what actually happened?
32:25He's come to go back, I think he's found me on the other side of the road.
32:27He's come to go crossing his bike.
32:29Yeah.
32:29And the car's just, it's like he's not seen him.
32:32Straight into him.
32:32So, right.
32:33He's sort of buckled under his front.
32:36Yeah.
32:37Do you know if he's hit the front or the back wheel?
32:38I think it was the back wheel.
32:43Right.
32:44What's this chap giving his name as?
32:48Er...
32:48He did say to me as well, he said, I trusted me in the day, I'd had a couple of
32:51pints.
32:52Right.
32:53As well.
32:54He didn't slam on it, I would expect someone to him.
32:57Yeah.
32:57He didn't react as he'd expect to, yeah.
33:00He wanted to go further down the road, so we stopped him.
33:04Yes, from what witnesses are saying, it sounds like he might be under the influence of alcohol
33:08so it's important we get to his address as quick as we can and try and ascertain what his levels
33:12of alcohol are at.
33:16Matt runs the driver's details through the system.
33:21There's a bit of intel on our system.
33:25If he provides over, he'll be coming in and the investigation will begin.
33:29Can you get ahead of that?
33:30Oh, eight, four, five.
33:59I'm at this address.
34:02The car is outside.
34:03I'm getting no response.
34:04However, obviously there's been insinuation that the driver's under the influence.
34:08There's somebody been injured, so I'm going to be forcing entry.
34:11With the driver potentially under the influence, it's critical that Matt breathalises him as soon as possible.
34:19Final warning, chap.
34:20Door's going in.
34:21Stand by.
34:34Police!
34:36You're in here, show yourself!
34:41Coming up, the wanted driver...
34:44You've been involved in a collision with a child.
34:46...makes a surprising confession.
34:48Let's take a drink.
34:51And when was that?
34:52Ten minutes ago, twenty minutes ago.
35:11Police! Come on down, otherwise they're going to put your door through.
35:16On the outskirts of Derby, traffic cop Matt Cork is looking for a driver suspected of knocking a nine-year
35:22-old off his bike while under the influence.
35:26Final warning, chap. Door's going in. Stand by.
35:41Police! If you're in here, show yourself!
35:45As Matt enters the house...
35:48Hello!
35:48...the owner appears outside.
35:50Pop your hands out for me. Super at the moment, mate. Pop them behind your bike.
35:55You're under arrest and suspicion of driving whilst unfit through a drink of drugs, okay?
36:01Right, the reason being for this, note still, is ultimately it's alleged you've been involved in a collision with a
36:06child.
36:07Yeah, yeah. I stopped at the scene.
36:09Right. Okay.
36:11So...
36:11Local officers have arrived to assist.
36:14Hey, Tango 28, this chap's just appeared.
36:17He's under arrest for unfit at the moment.
36:19I stopped at the scene to see it was okay.
36:22Yeah.
36:23So I sort of went, but...
36:25Right.
36:28Have a seat in there for us, chap.
36:33Right.
36:34Yeah.
36:35When was the last time you had an alcoholic drink?
36:39Large drink for a drink.
36:41Okay.
36:44And when was that?
36:46Ten minutes ago, twenty minutes ago.
36:48All I need you to do is take a deep breath in, see your lips around that tube and keep
36:52blowing until I tell you to stop, okay?
36:54Go for it.
36:58Stop.
37:03Legal limits 35.
37:06And you provided a reading of 44.
37:09Okay.
37:10So, we're going to go down to the police station.
37:28Follow me, mate.
37:29You okay, all right?
37:30Yes, good. Thank you, Sarge. How are you?
37:32Hello. Okay.
37:33Hiya.
37:33So, there have been reports of a collision, whereby a nine-year-old child has been knocked off his bike
37:39by a vehicle.
37:42So, have you, since the time of the alleged offence, consumed or used any of the following things?
37:50And if so, what?
37:52So, the time of the alleged offence is going to be the time of the collision, all right?
37:57So, have you, since that time, had any alcohol or other drink?
38:01And a couple of pints.
38:03Okay.
38:04Do you want to follow me, colleague?
38:06Yeah.
38:06All right.
38:07And I'll speak to you shortly.
38:09At the minute, this gent's saying that, out of sheer panic and shock from this incident, he's driven home and
38:15walked to his local and necked two pints.
38:19Okay. Take a nice, deep breath. Make a good seal around the tube and blow into it for me. That's
38:24it. Keep going, keep going, keep going, keep going, keep going, keep going, keep going, keep going, keep going, keep
38:29going.
38:29There's no reason why a driver should not be able to react to something in the road and slow and
38:35stop.
38:36I think drink drivers are quite selfish for putting other people at risk and putting their own want for alcohol
38:43above other people's safety, to be honest.
38:46So, your first specimen of breath came out at 42 and your second one came out at 42. So, the
38:53legal limit for drink driving is 35.
38:55So, now it'll be a case of interviewing him, finding out exactly what he's had to drink, when he's had
39:01to drink, how much he's had to eat, things like that.
39:07Okay. So, this interview is being digitally recorded. Tell me in as much detail as possible about the collision and
39:15your actions before and after.
39:18Well, basically, it sort of came out of the blue. I just didn't see him.
39:21So, what did you do after the collision?
39:23Well, I got out and went back to the boy to ask how he was.
39:27Yeah.
39:28He sent it all right. Yeah, if it said he was, he said a head injury. If it said that,
39:33I would have stayed.
39:34I don't know why I came home and went to the pub. I can't believe I did that. I was
39:38just panicking, I suppose.
39:40So, when you went to the pub, what did you have to drink?
39:43Yeah, I had a pint of, um, San Miguel.
39:45So, when we were at the custody desk, he'd said, yeah, I've had two pints of lager.
39:49Right.
39:51We're certain then, it's one pint, er, and ultimately, when I, when I go into the pub and speak to
39:57them, they'll be able to confirm it.
39:58Yeah.
39:59Yeah.
40:01During the 45-minute interview, the driver tells Matt that he'd also had two pints of lager before the accident.
40:10Is there anything that you wish to add or clarify?
40:13Possibly it did have three, I don't know, but that's, that's about the only thing, yeah.
40:16So, yeah, just to clarify, then it was three pints?
40:19I don't know how to have.
40:19Right, OK.
40:21From here, you're going to be released under investigation.
40:24I'll obviously be seeing what we've had to drink there, watching CCTV, looking at their till and their register and
40:28bits like that.
40:32While the driver is released on bail, Matt's case now depends on a back calculation to determine whether he was
40:39over the limit at the time of the collision.
40:44Recent years have seen a 25% increase in drivers under the influence of drugs and alcohol.
40:52Drink and drug driving at the moment really is a massive, massive issue.
40:57Every single shift, perhaps two or three incidents in a 12-hour period, day or night, weekend, weekdays, it doesn't
41:05matter what time of year and the issue doesn't seem to be going away.
41:11I've had 101 different stories ranging from family bereavements to hard times at work.
41:18I'll be honest, there's no sympathy from me.
41:20These people have put themselves and other road users at serious risk.
41:25As a traffic cop, we have to be quite motivated to go and make the streets of Derbyshire safe by
41:31catching these drink and drug drivers.
41:32It's the worst and most selfish form of traffic offence that there is.
41:38So we invest a lot of time, energy and effort into going after these people because we don't want them
41:44on the streets.
41:48In this episode...
41:49NA Oscar Tango 14.
41:52This vehicle is failing to stop.
41:54In the case of the driver who led Martin Carter on a high-speed pursuit...
41:59And it's a crash, crash, crash.
42:01Can you hear us?
42:04He had nearly ten times the minimum level of ketamine required for prosecution in his system.
42:11Is he trapped?
42:12He is trapped, mate, yeah.
42:13He pleaded guilty to causing serious injury through dangerous driving, drug driving, driving without insurance and possession of ketamine, cannabis
42:23and a knife.
42:25The driver admitted that he'd been at a party in a local town and he'd consumed a copious amount of
42:31ketamine.
42:32His thought process was that he could outrun the police.
42:36He was disqualified from driving for four and a half years and sentenced to three years and two months in
42:43prison.
42:43Stay where you are.
42:45OK.
42:45You broke your leg.
42:47All right.
42:47So you can't stand on it.
42:49The passenger spent three weeks in a coma and suffered two fractured legs.
42:54As a result of the collision, the passenger has got some seriously life-changing injuries to his legs.
43:02Following an investigation, traffic cop Martin Carter was cleared.
43:06Just leave it here.
43:07There was no wrongdoing from me or any other officer involved.
43:11This type of incident is typical with the kind of misery that drug drivers can bring to their own lives,
43:17but more importantly to the lives of others.
43:21Pull over in here now! In here!
43:24The driver who was stopped on the M1...
43:27Smell of alcohol a little bit, mate. Have you had a drink?
43:30Yeah.
43:30You've had a drink?
43:31..was charged with driving while unfit due to alcohol.
43:36How you'd think you can drive on the motorway with all these other people is beyond me.
43:41He was given an 18-month suspended sentence and banned from the roads for 56 months.
43:52137.
43:52Are they?
43:53The legal limit is 35.
43:56Are they?
43:56That is disgusting that you think you can be driving...
43:59Yeah, you're damn right.
43:59I'm going to be leaving them.
44:02Final warning, chap.
44:03Door's going in.
44:06And in the case of the driver who hit a nine-year-old off his bike...
44:10What did he say afterwards?
