00:04Hundreds of kilometers from the nearest mainland, using fine mesh nets, the scientists catch plankton near the surface.

00:19At night it is mainly animal plankton that are found near the surface.

00:24During the daytime, these tiny creatures hide from predators in the depths

00:29and only rise up when it's dark.

00:31Everyone has to lend a hand in collecting the plankton.

00:49Every few days the nets are cast at different places in the Indian Ocean.

00:54In this way the researchers hope to find out where there are particularly large quantities of plankton,

01:01because at such locations marine biodiversity is also exceptionally high.

01:08Without plankton there would be no life in the sea and probably no humans on land either,

01:13because they wouldn't have enough oxygen to breathe.

01:17Through photosynthesis the vegetable plankton in the sea produces a quarter of all the oxygen on Earth.

01:24What's more, every year debt plankton stores billions of tons of carbon dioxide on the seabed and thus reduces the

01:31greenhouse effect.

01:32Without these minute plants, the heat on our planet would be intolerable.
