00:03This intertidal zone is the canary in the mine of climate change.

00:10A three-degree change offers residents here three options.

00:15Leave town, adapt, or simply give up.

00:21Low tide reveals those who cannot move with the water.

00:27The creatures who pick up the challenge of direct sun.

00:44That puts this cannibalistic slug and its neighbors on the edge of survival.

00:52It's 43 degrees on this low tide sandbank.

00:57At this point, starfish are at the outer limit of their heat budget.

01:04Solution.

01:06They dig their own swimming pools.

01:17Relief is short-lived.

01:21On hot days, the pools don't last.

01:27Heat is deadly to those full of water.

01:34But for some ingenious starfish, it's the solution too.

01:40They pump cool water into their bodies at high tide.

01:44A buffer for when they face the heat.

01:49Giving it just enough time to get back into the receding lagoon.
