00:00The first round of the NFL draft did not disappoint as a spectacle, right?
00:04I understand.
00:05You know me.
00:06My stance is it is a glorified HR meeting.
00:10But the HR meeting was fun this time.
00:11You know how sometimes you go into meetings, you're like, all right,
00:13at least that wasn't one of those ones, right?
00:16At least this one felt like it was entertaining.
00:19Well, I've got thoughts.
00:20Yeah, there was definitely thoughts to be had.
00:22And so question of the day, what was the wildest, most surprising
00:25or interesting moment of the night for you last night?
00:28And, of course, you don't have to keep this to just the draft itself.
00:31Did you see something wild at the draft party that you were at?
00:34Let us know.
00:35713-572-4610.
00:37All right.
00:37So, you know, clearly on the draft itself, this is –
00:42You want to start the bidding here with a certain Makai Lemon?
00:46Well, actually, no.
00:48No?
00:48I feel the wildest thing.
00:50This was – remember I said yesterday, who's going to Leroy this whole thing?
00:54Well, we got to make sure you do this right.
00:56You can't just say to Leroy.
00:58I figure you got this.
01:0032.33, repeating, of course, percentage of survival.
01:06It's a lot better than we usually do.
01:08All right, Chums, I'm ready, guys.
01:10Let's do this.
01:12Leroy Jenkins!
01:14I love that so much.
01:15Who's going to Leroy Jenkins this draft?
01:18To me, it happened at pick number 13.
01:20We were all like, what the heck was that?
01:23Yeah, the Los Angeles Rams blew up all our conversations about, could a team trade up for Todd Simpson?
01:29Why trade up?
01:29We could just stick a pick at 13.
01:3213!
01:3313.
01:34It must be something about the Atlanta Falcons pick or something, man.
01:39The Atlanta Falcons stick was still on it.
01:41Atlanta Falcons got some stank on it, man.
01:43The stick was still on the pick.
01:44That's some bad juju.
01:45Yeah.
01:46If you don't know what Figgie's talking about, that is the pick that they actually received in the trade that
01:50was done last year
01:51where the Falcons traded up to get James Pierce Jr.
01:54Yeah.
01:54And so, I do wonder if that factored in, if the Rams were like, kind of, eh, this is free
01:59money anyways.
02:00Let's get a quarter.
02:01Because it is fair to acknowledge, Matt Stafford, he is not long for this quarterback world at this point, right?
02:08But he's reigning MVP.
02:10That is technically correct.
02:12But, see, the thing is, I don't know if Sean McVay planned on being there for a long time either.
02:18He's trying to win right now.
02:19I'm sure he wanted a playmaker right now.
02:21He didn't want to be at the press conference.
02:23All right, so, let's do this.
02:25Because, you know, they end up taking Ty Simpson, who is...
02:29Leroy.
02:30I mean, the big question...
02:33Leroy!
02:34Yes, it was...
02:35It wasn't the first, mind you, of the night, but it was probably maybe the biggest that made you go,
02:40wait, what just happened?
02:42As they take a quarterback that a lot of people were...
02:45I mean, there was conversations.
02:46Obviously, Dan Olofsky was one of the purveyors of it.
02:50The idea that maybe there isn't as much separation as we would like to believe between Ty Simpson.
02:54Dan was getting crushed over this, too, man.
02:56Oh, he was taking some bounds yesterday.
02:58He took victory lap.
02:59Yeah.
03:00As he should.
03:01But, yeah, maybe there wasn't so much separation between quarterback two and Ty Simpson and quarterback one.
03:06Obviously, Fernando Mendoza, who goes number one overall to the Raiders.
03:10But he's still an undersized guy, and he's still a guy who has not had a lot of playtime at
03:15the last level.
03:16Talk less of moving him up.
03:17But they seem to have him in a place where they're like, just go get their next quarterback.
03:21If they feel confident that they can develop him, there's comparisons for him to, like, Brock Purdy.
03:27Yeah.
03:27And I know that in that building, they have a lot of respect for Brock Purdy.
03:30However, you know, it felt like it was a lot of less need being real happy about it.
03:34And Sean McVay, if you believe the internet where everybody's trying to read his body language,
03:40don't seem like he's all that excited about having a quarterback three be drafted at 13.
03:44Well, he wasn't.
03:45And we're going to get into some other things that were wild and interesting in the draft.
03:48But you have the audio of Sean McVay.
03:51They're very usually excitable, you know, energetic.
03:56Sean McVay was asked about the quarterback.
03:59I think the thing you liked about the body of work is, you know, let's make one thing clear.
04:03This is Matthew's team.
04:04And you get a chance to be able to address, you know, the backup quarterback.
04:08You know, we've got Stetson.
04:09We've talked about the importance of Jimmy.
04:12So to be able to add somebody that you can evaluate a body of work where he was asked to
04:16play the position.
04:17And a lot of things that do translate in terms of concepts, reading with his feet,
04:22some of the different things in the drop back in the play action game, the movement game.
04:26So there's a lot of things that Coach Grubb did that's very similar to kind of how we operate.
04:31So it made it an easier evaluation to be able to kind of say, all right, what would that look
04:35like
04:35if he did translate it to our level?
04:38But there was a lot of players that we liked.
04:40And there was a lot of thought that kind of went into it.
04:42And we do feel really fortunate that when you look at the 13th pick, we were able to get that
04:47where, you know.
04:48All right, man.
04:49The main thing is that he was like, I'm going to answer a lot of things outside of that.
04:55Talking about this dude himself.
04:56He said he can compete with Stetson.
04:58Stetson Bennett.
04:59All right.
05:0013 overall.
05:01Nah, he had to make it clear.
05:03Hey, this is Matt's team.
05:05Yeah.
05:05Which I think that you would probably need to do that.
05:07Do you got to make that clear?
05:08No matter who you're talking to.
05:10Like, no matter if this was a different circumstance in which this was a quarterback that you actually like,
05:15I do think that that's something you need to do.
05:16Like, hey, just so y'all clear before y'all start talking crazy.
05:19Matt, the quarterback, right?
05:20He's the MVP.
05:21Right.
05:21He's the quarterback, guys.
05:22I think we had to make it clear, though.
05:24I think you needed to.
05:25They had to make it clear when the Packers drafted Jordan Love.
05:29That's right.
05:29They actually did.
05:30That was a big issue.
05:32Hey, guys.
05:32Just a heads up.
05:33This is Aaron Rodgers' team.
05:34All right?
05:35They actually did.
05:36I know we drafted them in the 25th.
05:37They absolutely did need to make that clear there.
05:39So, I think that that was the part of it.
05:40But the point for me is, like, he was doing a lot of, yeah, we liked a lot of players
05:44in this.
05:45So, you know, there's a lot of, he was hemming and hawing talking about Todd Simpson.
05:49What else?
05:49I am not certain.
05:50I mean, it's funny because the Makai Lemon we have to talk about.
05:54Man, Pittsburgh, the draft is in your town.
05:58How could you get caught with your pants down?
06:00Well...
06:01And you're only the second person to do it.
06:02Or actually, they actually are on both parts of getting caught with your pants down.
06:07Because at first, Makai Lemon, wide receiver out of USC, power slot of sorts, seems like
06:12he can play inside, outside.
06:13Real interesting prospect.
06:14Yeah.
06:14The Steelers at 21 believed, here we go.
06:17Yeah.
06:17We gonna get him.
06:18They got, they called him.
06:19So, they gave him a call.
06:20They're like, hey, buddy, we're gonna draft you.
06:21Mm-hmm.
06:23Except, Howie Roseman came in with the lead course, so not so fast, my friend.
06:28Exactly what he did.
06:28And the Philadelphia Eagles made a trade with their arch nemesis, the Dallas Cowboys, to
06:33move one slot ahead of the Steelers and take Makai Lemon.
06:36In fact, do we have audio of what it sounded like?
06:39No.
06:39You want from his part or Ian Rappaport explaining what happened?
06:43His part, his part.
06:43We heard the other one earlier.
06:44This is him on the phone.
06:45This is Makai Lemon.
06:46He is on the phone talking to the Steelers thinking that I'm gonna go with 21.
06:50Except he's not.
06:52Let's go!
06:54Let's go!
06:55Let's go!
06:56Let's go!
06:57Come on, man.
06:59Let's go!
06:59Let's go!
07:01Hey, why Philly come?
07:04Because I want to get you.
07:06Oh, Philly just traded for you.
07:07I love it.
07:08This is Philly.
07:09He just traded low.
07:11Philly's picking you right now.
07:13Okay, so if you didn't hear it, I just died laughing on the very walk away there.
07:17Because he said, why is Philly calling me?
07:20Because after he gets, he's on the phone with the Steelers.
07:22He's asking Omar Khan, the GM for the Steelers.
07:26And then the next thing you hear him say is, hello?
07:30Like they just went, oh crap.
07:32Philly jumped us and they just hung up the phone.
07:33This doesn't happen.
07:35It's so good.
07:36This doesn't happen.
07:38So good.
07:40Oh my.
07:41Why is Philly calling me?
07:42Because we always, we talk about people jumping up and stealing a player.
07:45Yeah.
07:46They jumped up and just, like, this is as steely as this ever been stolen in an NFL draft.
07:51In my memory, I found that to be fascinating.
07:53And what I loved about this, what would have made it even more interesting is, then when
07:57he goes to the press conference, he's wearing, obviously, the Eagles hat after he's done
08:00all of the, you know, all the dapping up of the commissioner and everything.
08:03As he's going to the, to the sit down at the, at the desk, someone in the media scrum shouts
08:09out, go birds.
08:10And he goes, no, that immediately.
08:12So he's like, he's jumped, he's in on Philly.
08:14Like, and I guess that's, that's the place of the players to immediately, you know, buy
08:19in on whatever organization.
08:20I always kind of feel it's incredible and it's kind of a fair that we expect them to
08:24immediately do the cosplay of, I am, I am, I know all the culture of this team and I
08:28am immediately in it.
08:29Right.
08:29He did it.
08:30He's like, go birds.
08:31We in there.
08:31Yeah.
08:31Yeah.
08:32And speaking of pants down.
08:34Yeah.
08:34Yeah.
08:34Yeah.
08:35And then, then the Steelers go, well, you know what?
08:37Let's just pivot and get a really good offensive lineman.
08:39Maxi and Nacho are my Nigerian brethren.
08:41They select him at 21 and the camera goes to his house where they're having a party.
08:47Except somebody was showing their ass.
08:49Literally.
08:49Their whole ass.
08:51Looking like a fool with your pants on the ground.
08:53Yeah.
08:54Are y'all with me now?
08:55Pull your damn pants up.
08:56How many times you hear me say that?
08:58When was it the time we wasn't with you?
08:59No, but sometimes it's like, oh, you're just the old guy that this, I mean, come on.
09:05I mean, they were down below his cheeks, full camera, center stage.
09:13I mean, it's funny because we've gone from, like, watching people's spouses on a draft
09:18to just watching cheeks.
09:20And not in the way that I imagine you would have expected in this instance.
09:23Watching the homies.
09:24Anything else jump out for you guys?
09:25The one for me, like, specifically draft-wise was, you noted this on our run sheet.
09:32I saw this as well.
09:34CeCe Mainoa, the tackle out of Utah, he ends up getting drafted to, where does he get drafted
09:42again?
09:42No, it's the Giants, right?
09:44Yeah.
09:44And he was talking to the quarterback of the Giants, Jackson Dart, and apparently he said,
09:48I'm ready to die for you, bro.
09:50Yeah.
09:50And I was like, we are laying it on a little thick.
09:52Like, I get it.
09:53This is the offensive lineman thing to do.
09:55He said it five times.
09:55He said it a lot.
09:56I count it.
09:57I'll die for you, man.
09:58I'll die for you.
09:59I'm like, come on, man.
10:02What's funny is it's not even a come on, man, to me quite in the way of, like, I don't
10:06believe
10:06you.
10:07It's just like, hey, man.
10:08At some point, we're scaring everybody with the amount of, like.
10:12We're scaring the hoes, man.
10:13Just calm down.
10:14Yeah.
10:14It's like, we're leaning in real heavy here on I will die.
10:188-3-2, Fernando Mendoza leaving his little brother hanging was wild.
10:21Oh, yeah.
10:22Yeah.
10:23Well, he went to the one brother and then left his younger brother hanging.
10:28Figgy, did you have any that's jumped out?
10:30The one that jumped out to me was I was kind of shocked that Cardinal Tate went number four.
10:34Strong agree.
10:35Yeah.
10:36Honestly, you know, I love Ohio State, but I felt like he was probably going to go around
10:43maybe 10 to 15, somewhere around there.
10:47But I'm like, man, Cardinal Tate, he wasn't even the best receiver on his team ever.
10:51Yeah.
10:52Yeah.
10:52But I mean.
10:53He never cracked a thousand yards.
10:55Right.
10:55Yeah.
10:56Going forward.
10:57I found that interesting.
10:58Well, we can talk more about that as we keep going here.
11:00That was a little shocking to me.
11:01Steve, once Jeremiah Love goes off the board at three, the Tennessee Titans were in an interesting
11:06place.
11:06And I can get why they made that selection.
11:10I still am wondering if that was the best of their selection.
11:14Sure.
11:15But ultimately, I feel OK with it.
11:17Right.
11:17Yeah.
11:17That was a little rich.
11:18I think it kind of threw the draft off a little bit because I think Kansas City was trying
11:22to get Cardinal Tate.
11:23I don't know.
11:24I feel like Kansas City ended up with exactly who they wanted.
11:26And that is something that we have to talk about as you're in the loop here on Sports
11:29Radio 610 because coming up next, there was a lot to be seen in the first round of the
11:34NFL draft and still stuff to be seen headed into day two.
