Is there a WR dilemma? What is the future for Kayshon Boutte and the New England Patriots? With all the A.J. Brown rumors/speculation.... Hypothetically, if a trade does comes to fruition, would there be an odd man out? Could it be Boutte? Thoughts?
Transcript
00:00But here's the Kayshawn Booty situation.
00:02If Adam Schefter's telling us that Patriots are likely to get the deal done after June 1st,
00:09some receiver is going to be, in the words of the young kids, ass out.
00:16Who's that guy?
00:17Booty out?
00:18Booty out.
00:19There's already been rumors that it could be Booty, so it makes sense.
00:21Pretty much everybody showed up yesterday.
00:25Drake May, Ramond Ray Stevenson, everybody was there yesterday.
00:29Was Booty there?
00:29No.
00:30His absence is notable.
00:33And what does that say about a guy who's, what is his booty, third year he's going into?
00:42No, he's entering his fifth, isn't it?
00:45Is it his fifth year?
00:46Okay.
00:47All right, so fourth year who hasn't really done anything crazy.
00:53It's not like it's, you know, A.J. Brown, Jamar Chase was not showing up that maybe they want a
01:01new contract.
01:02He hasn't had a thousand-yard season.
01:03Yeah, he's not like he's done anything crazy.
01:05If anybody, if anything, he should be one of the guys that should be front and center with bells on,
01:10right?
01:10Everybody in that wide receiver room.
01:11So when you don't have a guy showing up, that tells me that this guy probably wants out unless there's
01:19some situation that we don't know about behind the scenes that, you know, is not allowing him to be here
01:26for the first couple of days.
01:28But isn't that what it tells you?
01:30Well, I'm curious to see how that wide receiver room looks depending on whether or not they get A.J.
01:34Brown just in terms of their, like, dynamics with each other.
01:38Because it was so different last year when Stephon Diggs was there.
01:42And it was every, they were all talking about, like, oh, yeah, it's his turn and then it's my turn.
01:47And they have different pass catchers leading every game and everybody's happy, everybody's winning.
01:52Do you remember the year before that?
01:53Like, it was so chaotic.
01:56Everything they were saying, it was, like, so, it was so disorganized and just bad vibes.
02:02Now that Stephon Diggs is gone, like, I don't know.
02:05For whatever you want to say about Stephon Diggs and whether you wanted him back here or not, I do
02:10think that overall he was a net positive on that wide receiver room.
02:14Like, their dynamics.
02:16Yeah.
02:16And I think A.J. Brown would be the same thing.
02:18Like, you would call him a leader.
02:19Yeah.
02:20I think he was definitely a leader on the offense and especially in that room with those young guys.
02:25Like, Kayshawn Booty, Pop Douglas.
02:27Like, like you said, Wiggy, like, these guys, yeah, they have talent, but they've never really done anything in terms
02:32of going to a Super Bowl or having thousand-yard seasons or being all pro or pro bowl guys.
02:38Or being the face of your team.
02:39I think if A.J. Brown comes in, it becomes, all right, A.J. Brown is the big dog.
02:44Romeo Dobbs is, all right, next in line.
02:47And then who's going to be the slot guy?
02:50That's what it becomes.
02:51And that's where, like, Pop might be out.
02:54Honestly.
02:55Pop's either in.
02:56He could be in because—
02:57They haven't even talked about his contract, as I heard.
03:00Right.
03:00But who would be the slot guy, right?
03:02He would probably be the best fit for the slot position.
03:05You still have Matt Collins as well.
03:06Yeah, what about the shoeless guy?
03:07Yeah, Matt Collins is more of an outside guy.
03:08He's not really a slot guy like your Julian Edelman, Troy Brown.
03:12What about Efty?
03:14Chisholm?
03:14Yeah.
03:14Well, that's what I'm saying.
03:15It becomes Chisholm.
03:16It becomes Pop.
03:17It becomes one of those guys in there that are a little bit more quick, a little bit more shifty,
03:21that become that third wide receiver who they utilize more in the slot.
03:27Well, you're still going to have Matt Collins, which will become your big physical run block
03:33of maybe some high point balls.
03:35A.J. Brown is going to be the big dog.
03:37Romeo Dobbs is going to be number two.
03:39But I think it also allows you to put guys like A.J. Brown in the slot or Romeo Dobbs
03:44in the slot, right?
03:44So your top three are just Brown, Dobbs, and Hollins, and then other guys can fill in along the way.
03:50But it also allows for the very ability to put A.J. Brown in the slot or outside and kind
03:54of mix and match.
03:54My question is, what is going on with what possibly could be going on with Steph Diggs?
04:00Where it's not even a story.
04:03It's after the draft.
04:04I think that's what it is.
04:05What do you mean?
04:06They're waiting for it to shake out, for someone to pick him up as a free agent?
04:10Yeah, because, I mean, Sean brings up a great point.
04:12It's not just Steph Diggs.
04:14It's Keenan Allen, Debo Samuel, Juwan Jennings.
04:18Right, Steph Diggs is the much bigger name.
04:21People talk about things in the build-up to the draft because there's nothing else going on in the NFL.
04:24There hasn't been a single story on it.
04:26No, but there's not been a single story about any one of those.
04:28You think it's tied to the court stuff, Curtis?
04:30No, no.
04:30No, I have no idea.
04:31I mean that sincerely.
04:32Like, it's also interesting.
04:33If he was such a great leader, then why is nobody on the team saying, why don't we bring him
04:36back?
04:38He hasn't signed anywhere.
04:39Well, I think there were.
04:41Didn't Elliot Wolfe say that we don't—
04:43I'm not talking about—I'm talking about players on the team.
04:46Well, we really haven't heard from any of them yet.
04:48Yeah, we haven't heard from any of them yet.
04:48People on social media, do you see Christian Gonzalez doing the cash thing?
04:51I mean, people get their messages out if they want.
04:52Yeah, but I mean, I don't think anybody's really doing that.
04:55I just think Chime's been on it where your teams in the draft or teams that are getting ready for
05:01the draft,
05:01they want to see what that first round and maybe even that second round shakes out when it comes to
05:06wide receivers.
05:07And then once maybe they don't get their guy, that's when they'll start jumping into, like, some of this veteran
05:12free agent.
05:12This is David.
05:14David, good morning.
05:16Hey, good morning, guys.
05:17Great show as always.
05:18You guys are the best.
05:21Sincerely mean that.
05:22And on somebody like Booty, here's how I look at it.
05:25Is you get a guy who's on this fourth year, like you guys mentioned.
05:28And when they hear, when they see that somebody else is going to be brought in here like Brown, making
05:33more money, who, okay,
05:35just because he had a relationship with Mike Frabel, that creates a problem for the guys that are here.
05:41And this could be why they're checking out and they feel like moving on.
05:45Because they're not being taken care of.
05:47It's only him, though.
05:49I mean, pretty much everybody else was there.
05:51Right.
05:52Which bodes well for the Patriots.
05:54Because I think he sees the writing on the wall at his position.
05:58Romeo Dobbs is an outside guy.
06:00A.J. Brown is an outside guy.
06:02Matt Collins is an outside guy.
06:06Booty is an outside guy.
06:07He's not.
06:08If you want to put a guy inside, that's one thing for a player, too.
06:12But you have to have a special skill set to be a slot receiver.
06:16A.J. Brown is not a slot receiver.
06:17No, I kind of was surprised that you said that, Shyam.
06:19Because, like, I don't think if A.J. Brown is being shifty, like, it's almost like he's not.
06:23You don't need to be shifty to play in the slot anymore.
06:25That's like, it's.
06:26No, no, no, no.
06:26His best season in Philly, Wiggy, was when he was playing, like, 60% outside, 40% in the slot.
06:32Right.
06:33But in this offense, the slot receiver is about shiftiness.
06:36It's about running specific routes.
06:37The Julian Edelmans, the Troy Browns, the West Welkers.
06:41But I don't think it has to be that way.
06:42But that's how.
06:43No, but that's how this offense is built.
06:44Yeah, but if you're just, you're wasting opportunity if you're just dedicating A.J. Brown to being on the outside.
06:51Because you can still, as you know, you can still run routes that get you to the outside from the
06:54slot.
06:55And that's kind of my point.
06:55But marathoners cannot run a route.
06:56You'll use them in the slot where you'll use them, like, running seam routes and things of that nature.
07:03For Matt, because you know as well as anybody, Wiggy, like, Josh McDaniels hunts matchups more than he does, like,
07:08specific players in certain positions.
07:10And drop players on third and three.
07:12If he can find a way to get A.J. Brown on a smaller corner by lining him up in
07:16the slot, he's going to do that to abuse him.
07:18Right.
07:18But you'll see him run seam routes, some corner routes.
07:21But if you look at Josh McDaniels' offense, it's the offense that I was in, which started with Charlie Weiss,
07:26that slot receiver, that shiftier tight end that they use for running option routes, jerk routes, nod routes, you know.
07:35Greg did the jerk routes at DeShobo.
07:37Yes.
07:38And A.J. Brown would be more of a seam guy, more of a corner guy from the inside.
07:44Into the food room at the Capitol.
07:46Oh, that's a straight go route.
07:47That was a go route.
07:48It was a nine route, go route, whatever you want to call it.
07:51There was a lot of time in that room where the buffet was yesterday.
07:53I enjoy it that way.
07:54Yeah, I understand.
07:55Because you know what?
07:56There's plenty of real estate in there, plenty of arm room.
08:00I always like the marathon party.
