00:00The Kuala Lumpur High Court has imposed an additional 10 months' imprisonment on 33 men
00:06who allegedly gatecrashed an entertainment outlet in Taman Shamalin earlier this month.
00:12Justice Aslam Zainuddin delivered the decision on Tuesday
00:16following a prosecution review of the magistrate's court ruling last week,
00:20which had fined the men between 2,000 ringgit and 3,000 ringgit each.
00:25The court ordered the jail terms to run from the date of sentencing.
00:29Earlier, on April 10th, the magistrate's court had fined 32 men, 3,000 ringgit each,
00:36in default 4 months' jail, while two young offenders were fined 2,000 ringgit each,
00:41in default 3 months' jail, after they pleaded guilty to rioting while armed.
00:47The incident took place on April 5th at an entertainment premises in Cheras,
00:52involving weapons and objects that could be used in an attack.
00:55They were charged under Section 148 of the Penal Code,
01:00which carries a maximum sentence of five years' imprisonment,
01:04a fine, or both, upon conviction.
01:07All the accused, aged 21 to 57, had paid their fines,
01:12but one man was issued a warrant of arrest after failing to appear in court.
01:17The prosecution argued that the earlier sentence was too lenient
01:21given the seriousness of the offence,
01:23while defence lawyers said the accused were remorseful
01:26and that no injuries were reported.
