01:17And almost from the start, developed a terrible reputation.
01:23The institution's wards have been compared
01:26to concentration camps, where mentally ill patients
01:30were abused in squalor, resulting in at least 57 deaths
01:35by 1970 due to neglect.
01:40It was finally closed in 1990 and left abandoned for years.
01:47leading to reports of mysterious paranormal happenings
01:51from those who dared explore its crumbling halls.
01:56And while the building itself has since been demolished,
02:01the spirits that were inside may still be roaming the area.
02:07And according to one woman, possibly tracking down those who
02:11were trespassed there decades ago.

02:37But while at the door, a chill runs up Heather's spine,

03:09I kind of get a feeling that something's behind me.
03:13Out of the corner of my eye, I see a woman.
03:17She didn't look normal, and I can't explain it.
03:20She just had an eerie look.
03:23It was scary.
03:24I didn't know what I was looking at.
03:29But it gets much, much scarier moments later.
03:34So I'm watching her walk down the street,
03:36and as she's walking away, I can see her kind of disappear.
03:39My son and daughter are looking in the same direction
03:42that I'm looking, and they don't know what I'm talking about.
03:46So I walk over to my husband.
03:51He looks up and doesn't see anything.
03:56Later, we go inside, and I say to him,
03:59wasn't that scary, that lady?
04:00And he didn't know what I was talking about,
04:02and my kids didn't know what I was talking about.

04:09Fortunately for Heather, her doorbell camera
04:13backs her story up.
04:15When I saw the video footage, I was immediately terrified.
04:20My husband thought I was joking with him.
04:22He's like, did you do that?
04:23Did you make that somehow?
04:25Like, he thought it was some kind of filter.
04:27My kids were freaking out.
04:29I kind of downplayed it to them, because they're so little.
04:33I was scared, and I was shocked.
04:38So what exactly is going on here?
04:42The way that this entity or apparition is moving is very ominous to me.
04:49It's not walking like a living person would walk.
04:52It doesn't have, like, the mannerisms or the gait of, like, a living being.
04:57Her husband and the children that were looking out that same position didn't see anything.
05:04And that tells me that if they didn't see this with their naked eye, you're seeing something from the spirit

05:34Byberry is probably the most famous institution in the Philadelphia area.
05:42It opened at the turn of the century as a facility for people with mental health and disability needs.
05:49As the story goes, with a lot of places that were in our country at that time, overcrowding, underfunding, understaffed,
05:56led to a lot of terrible conditions for the patients there.
06:03If you grew up in the 90s in northeast Philadelphia, you know about Byberry.
06:08As kids, we used to run around in there.
06:13The one time I was with my friends and I felt somebody grab my arm.
06:17And I screamed and I ran out of there as fast as I could.
06:25The second that I saw her, I got that feeling.
06:28And I kind of started bringing back memories of being in that hospital and having my arm touched.
06:35After watching the footage, too, a couple of times and comparing the photos between the nurse's uniform from Byberry at
06:40the time
06:41and this apparition, I mean, they're identical.
06:47Perhaps the only reason that she was the only one who could see her
06:51was the fact that she used to hang out in the ruins of Byberry back in the day.
06:55So she's attuned to those energies where the rest of her family was not.
07:02But if the building no longer exists, why is the spirit still hanging around?
07:12It kind of posits this quirky theory that hauntings don't go away and don't dissipate
07:22even when you tear down a building and that a ghost is not anchored to a location at all.
07:31What happens when you take those walls away?
07:36Those spirits, the energies that were harnessed within this space are now released energetically.
