00:00Offenders convicted in the lower courts may face longer custodial sentences if a proposal to secure compensation for victims is
00:09implemented, a lawyer said.
00:12Salim Bashir told FMT that offenses, particularly those under the penal code, typically carry prison sentences and fines.
00:22He added that imposing an additional jail term on convicted persons for failing to comply with monetary orders, including compensation
00:31payments, due to extreme poverty could be seen as a regressive move.
00:37This could, in turn, have wider implications on a convict's family, particularly if he is the sole breadwinner, the lawyer
00:45said.
00:47Salim, also a former co-chairman of the Bar Council's Criminal Law Committee, added that it would be imprudent for
00:55the prosecution to apply for compensation orders against persons convicted and sentenced to death.
01:01He was responding to Attorney General Dosuki Mokhtar's directive requiring deputy public prosecutors to seek compensation orders for victims of
01:13crimes, including those killed by drivers driving under the influence.
