00:31Good morning, I'm Craig DeGrelli.
00:33This morning, a new ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon is already under strain,
00:38with Lebanese officials accusing Israel of violating the deal just hours after it began.
00:44Smoke rising from at least one village in southern Lebanon early today.
00:47The Lebanese army says Israeli forces carried out what it calls a number of acts of aggression
00:53after the truce took effect at midnight.
00:55Israel, meanwhile, says it will continue to hold positions inside Lebanon during the ceasefire.
01:02Hezbollah argues that gives Lebanon the right to respond, but says it will hold its fire as long as Israel
01:09does.
01:10Despite the tension, thousands of displaced families are returning home as the cleanup from the war begins.
01:16The ceasefire could shape broader talks tied to the war with Iran involving the United States.
01:22Lebanon has been a sticking point.
01:24Israeli strikes continued there even after a separate U.S.-Israel ceasefire with Tehran.
01:30The U.S. and Israel say Lebanon was not included.
01:34Iran says it was.
01:36President Donald Trump said Thursday the war could be nearing an end.
01:39I don't want to be a wise guy.
01:41I don't want to speak too soon.
01:43But we do very well.
01:45You noticed that we're doing very well.
01:47And I will say the war in Iran is going along swimmingly.
01:51We can do whatever we want.
01:55And it should be ending pretty soon.
01:58It was perfect.
02:00I mean, it's perfect.
02:01On Capitol Hill, an effort to force an end to the war fell short.
02:05The vote was extremely close.
02:07The House rejected the resolution 213 to 214.
02:12Republican Thomas Massey voted with Democrats in support.
02:15Maine Democrat Jared Golden broke ranks to oppose it.
02:19Three Republicans did not vote.
02:21The feud between the Vatican and the White House is now out in the open,
02:25with Pope Leo taking direct aim at global leaders and President Trump firing back.
02:31The Pope, speaking during a peace mass in Cameroon,
02:34delivered some of his strongest language yet on war and power.
02:38He warned against leaders who use religion to justify violence and said the world is being ravaged by tyrants.
02:57The remarks did not name Trump, but land in the middle of a growing clash over the war in Iran.
03:02He went on to say, quote,
03:04The world is being ravaged by a handful of tyrants, yet it is held together by a multitude of supportive
03:10brothers and sisters.
03:12Asked about the Pope on Thursday, Trump pushed back, insisting there is no clash.
03:18I'm not fighting with him.
03:19The Pope made a statement.
03:21He says Iran can have a nuclear weapon.
03:23I say Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon.
03:25And if the Pope looked at the 42,000 people that were killed over the last two or three months
03:31as a protester with no weapons, no nothing, I mean, you take a look at that.
03:36So I could disagree with the Pope.
03:38I have a right to disagree.
03:39I have a right to disagree with the Pope.
03:41You heard there the president saying the Pope supports Iran having a nuclear weapon.
03:47The Pope has never said that.
03:49In fact, he has a history of speaking out against nuclear weapons.
03:53And the tension is now heading closer to home.
03:55The Trump administration is ending an $11 million federal contract with Catholic Charities in Miami,
04:01a program that houses and cares for unaccompanied migrant children.
04:06Church leaders say the program will shut down within months,
04:09ending a decades-long partnership with the federal government.
04:13Acting ICE director Todd Lyons, who has led the agency through President Trump's ramped-up immigration crackdown,
04:20is stepping down.
04:22Homeland Security Secretary Mark Wayne Mullen announced Thursday that Lyons will leave his role at the end of May.
04:28Mullen praised his work, saying, quote,
04:31Thanks to his leadership, American communities are safer.
04:34No reason was given for the departure, though Lyons is expected to move into the private sector.
04:39The president appointed Lyons acting director in March of 2025 after reassigning Caleb Vitello.
04:45Lyons has led the agency during a major expansion of immigration enforcement under Trump.
04:51It is not yet clear who will replace him.
04:54Quietly, in the middle of the night, the U.S. House passed a short-term extension
04:59of a controversial surveillance program used by American intelligence agencies.
05:04In the early morning hours, lawmakers approved a stopgap measure to keep the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act,
05:11or FISA, from expiring on Monday.
05:13The bill buys time until April 30th, as Congress remains divided over Section 702,
05:19the provision that allows the government to collect communications of foreigners overseas,
05:24including messages involving Americans without a warrant.
05:27President Trump has pushed for a clean extension with no changes.
05:31But that effort stalled, with about 20 Republicans joining most Democrats to block it earlier.
05:37The Senate still needs to approve the short-term extension before the deadline.
05:42Businesses that paid tariffs under President Trump could soon begin getting their money back.
05:46But they will have to go get it.
05:48The check is not in the mail.
05:49The federal government is launching a new online system next week to process tariff refunds
05:56after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled those duties were illegal.
06:00U.S. Customs and Border Protection says the portal, called CAPE, opens Monday,
06:05allowing companies to file claims electronically.
06:08The ruling could put the government on the hook for more than $100 billion in refunds
06:13tied to tariffs imposed under emergency powers.
06:16CBP confirmed in a court filing that the system will begin accepting applications on April 20th.
06:23But the refunds are not automatic.
06:25Businesses must apply, document what they paid, and wait for approval.
06:30Only certain tariffs qualify, including those still open or finalized within the past 80 days.
06:36Only importers of record or brokers who paid on their behalf can file.
06:40Consumers who paid higher prices are not eligible.
06:43Approved claims could be paid within 60 to 90 days.
06:48Finally this morning, they've been around the moon and back.
06:51And now the Artemis II crew is talking about what that experience was really like.
06:56Millions watched as the Orion capsule splashed down in the Pacific last Friday,
07:00with Navy crews pulling Reed Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen to safety.
07:06The crew traveled farther than any astronauts in American history.
07:10And they say the experience forged a bond that will last a lifetime.
07:15Like, this was an unbelievable adventure.
07:18And it was made possible by this crew and the support of each other throughout the whole thing.
07:22And I've said it so many times, we are just, we are bonded forever.
07:25I mean, that's the closest four humans can be and not be a family.
07:29We're all kind of struck by these things that make us feel small.
07:32And that, the sense I had was the sense of fragility and feeling small, infinitesimally small.
07:39But yet, this very powerful feeling as a human being, like as a group.
07:45Christina Koch says two moments stuck with her.
07:48First, seeing Earth from deep space, small and distant as they circled the moon.
07:54And second, the return home.
07:55Reentry was so intense, she says the Orion capsule became a blazing fireball,
08:00almost impossible to look at as it tore back through the atmosphere.
08:04You know, I watched one of these group interviews.
08:06It was really, really good.
08:07You can tell those four astronauts really like each other.
08:11And they have this camaraderie.
08:13They're very, very authentic and they're friends.
08:17And oh, by the way, they are really, really good at their jobs.
08:22America is so proud of them.
08:23All right, before we head out, here's what we're tracking today.
08:25It's Opinion Day at the Supreme Court.
08:28This morning, we'll be watching for any major rulings,
08:31including the much-anticipated one on the Voting Rights Act.
08:35Later, President Trump speaks at a Turning Point USA event in Phoenix,
08:39labeled the Build the Red Wall event.
08:41And tonight in Lexington, Massachusetts, this is fun,
08:44a reenactment of Paul Revere's ride,
08:46marking the moment that helped spark the American Revolution.
08:49You know the one?
