00:00Right now, while you watch me on social media, someone somewhere is keeping tabs on just about
00:06everything that you do. Every time you visit a website, hit that like button, download a free
00:12app, or get a cheeseburger delivered to your door, your behaviors are being tracked. Then,
00:19in the form of targeted advertising, all of that personal information is served back to you.
00:25I bought a detailed list online of wealthy suburban New Yorkers who smoke cigarettes,
00:31and the whole process took little more than a credit card. Buying it was completely legal,
00:36even though nobody on the list actually agreed to be on it. In its online portal,
00:42Exact Data promises advertisers an easy way to create highly specific lists based on hundreds
00:49of factors about people, like their location, their household income, or whether they prefer
00:55Jack Daniels over Bacardi. Or maybe they don't drink alcohol at all, but they're into cycling,
01:01or knitting, or conservative politics. As you doomsproul, you are not a customer to big tech,
01:07you are the product. The purpose is simple, to reveal your interests and ultimately to get you
01:14to open up your wallet. There are hundreds, perhaps thousands, of data brokers just like
01:19exacts data on the internet, and they make up a $270 billion global industry. Getting off their lists
01:26depends entirely on what state you live in. So check out my latest investigation into how these
01:32companies sell your data and how to opt out at Straight Arrow.
