Is Pragmata a worthy successor to classic sci-fi shooters? This quick review covers its satisfying combat, deep upgrade system, and roguelike elements, while also pointing out a few flaws like pacing and UI.

00:00In the yawning black hole of sci-fi action shooters, Pragmata offers a rare ray of light.
00:04There's something distinctly old school about its visuals. The clean monochromatic panelling
00:08of the lunar base gives me flashes of Mass Effect, and having finished Pragmata in just
00:12over 12 hours, I was churned enough to head back in for New Game Plus immediately. It offers an
00:17innovative take on third person shooters, with well executed exploration and level design that
00:21borrows from roguelikes, and the game is long enough to feel satisfying, while short enough
00:25to avoid tedium. But the full weapon arsenal is locked behind minigames and New Game Plus,
00:29the UI and pathfinding can feel outdated, and there are pacing issues toward end-game stages.
00:34Pragmata is nostalgia wrapped in a shiny new spacesuit, with plenty of cool tricks up its
00:38pressurised sleeve. It's good to see Capcom returning to its quirky action beat, with an
00:42impressive host of weaponry, upgrades, combat hacks and base building as the sci-fi adventure
00:47moves through beautifully conceptualised biomes. The visual and stylistic elements definitely
00:51give me deja vu at times, and I could do without its heavy-handed themes battering me over the
00:55head, but beneath all that polished titanium sits a profound tale of humanity I'll not
01:00soon forget.
