Peter Martin believes Hearts fans will not care if luck plays a part as long as they win their games in the title run-in. Alex Rae reckons Rangers have goals in their side to win the title, but he refuses to rule out Celtic. Is it now a two-horse race to avoid the play-off place?

00:01:51would need to be mixed up a wee bit. I think we got a bit of tanking. I think 4

00:01:55it could have been any score. Yeah, our big Alan Combe who was excellent in goal for us but I

00:02:00great cause. A lot of people there, a lot of people affected by Alzheimer's and yeah, thoroughly enjoyed it.

00:02:06A bit sore this morning. You're probably sore as well. But probably the sorest point was getting

00:02:11subbed for a gradle after 10 minutes. I've had some low points in my career but my old man went,

00:02:17that's me, I'm not going back to watch you. The funny thing about it was that the gradle and a

00:02:23called Steven Pudden, who's an actor, he's a big Rangers fan, he's a great lad and I've got to give

00:02:29him a special mention because usually I absolutely leather him on the park but he scored a belter of

00:02:35a goal and he came on for Tam as a sub. So that's when you know the ultimate is he's

00:02:41hit one into

00:02:42the roof of the net. Tam's sitting on the bench going, I've just been subbed for him. But that

00:02:46was funny. And then of course, they had so many professional players who were all absolutely,

00:02:51you know, strolling about. And Stuart Lovell, I really tried to lay one on him because he tried the

00:02:56old psychology of, you know, I tried to put one in from the left-hand side and he had a

00:03:01wee go at me.

00:03:01He had a wee nibble.

00:03:03He said, you're not happy with your left peg, are you? And then I thought to myself, you know,

00:03:07Stuart, you're such a nice lad. And for that line alone, I'm going to try and do you whenever you

00:06:00Because quite simply, we want to hear your thoughts on your team, how they performed,

00:06:04some of the big decisions over the weekend, Saturday and Sunday. I was at Tyne Castle on the

00:06:11Saturday afternoon for Hearts against Motherwell. An interesting game because Hearts won it 3-1.

00:06:16Are you lucky?

00:06:18I'll get to that. Shut it.

00:06:21The stats, 47% for Hearts, 53% possession for Motherwell.

00:06:28And Motherwell took the lead in the match through Longello. Braga, Shanklin penalty and Kabori

00:06:34got the all-important one. 12 shots for Hearts, 12 for Motherwell, 5 on target for Hearts, 3 on target

00:06:41for Motherwell.

00:06:43As ever, you just have to get the job done, Alec.

00:06:47The main stance, the result. You could have as much of the ball as you like. Ultimately, it's about the

00:06:52three points, particularly at this stage of the season.

00:06:55And you have to say, they're a real threat to set plays, Hearts. They have a really big offensive team

00:07:02and they're the number one in the division for set pieces.

00:07:05Yeah, no surprise Stuart Finley coming in. His involvement in that set piece for Braga, it's a good goal anyway,

00:07:13Tam. It's a great goal from Braga.

00:07:15But his involvement in it with the set piece from the corner overheads it back over to him is vital

00:07:21and they are dangerous from them.

00:07:23Yeah, they're difficult to defend against. They're a big side and they've got good delivery coming in from both sides.

00:07:27So, you know, obviously they work on it. They work on it continuously because they've been very successful at set

00:07:33pieces.

00:07:33So, it's no surprise that they scored from another couple of the weekend. But, you know, we're going to obviously

00:07:38speak about the game.

00:07:39I think the key moment is Maswanisi's chance at one each. And if that goes in and Motherwell will go

00:07:432-1 up, then I don't think Hearts come back and win.

00:07:47But, and the penalty kick as well. There's a lot of talking points in this game. But, as Alex said,

00:07:51the most important thing for Hearts at the minute is just winning games.

00:07:55Now, let's get to the lucky element of it. We might as well because it became a feature. There's always

00:07:59a moment.

00:08:00And I have laughed about it on many an occasion in a press conference where Sir Alex Ferguson was leathering

00:08:07me.

00:08:07Marta O'Neill had a ding-dong with me. Walter, Alex, my place, you name it.

00:08:11Really great.

00:08:11Your job is there to ask questions. Over and above that, I always try and tell every journalist, your job

00:08:20is to ask questions, not to tell them what you think.

00:08:24Your opinion is, yeah.

00:08:24Yeah. I'm not interested in that part of it. I'm interested in getting his opinion, the manager's.

00:08:29And there is a moment when you ask a question and you're fighting with a manager that the rest of

00:08:34the journalists, you can feel them all just going distances on the cell front.

00:08:40You're on your own.

00:08:40You're on your own. And then there's a feeling of the people who really don't like you. Some journalists don't

00:08:45like you. And they're just thinking, go on, Derek, batter them, you know.

00:08:49So it's one of those moments. But I just made the point I was trying to make was, listen, some

00:08:56managers who've won the titles have said to me, sometimes it's better.

00:08:59Carry a bit of luck.

00:08:59Carry a bit of luck. Better being lucky than good. That's Gordon Strachan's classic line to me, which many have

00:09:05used in the past as well.

00:09:06So I said to Derek, you know, did you, was it carrying a bit of luck? Was it better to

00:09:11be lucky than good? And, you know, well, let's see what Derek had to say.

00:09:16I've spoken to more than a few title-oriented managers and they've all said sometimes it's better being lucky than

00:09:21good.

00:09:23Do you think at times you need that?

00:09:24Oh, you think we're lucky today?

00:09:26No, do you think sometimes you need that?

00:09:28No, I'm asking you, do you think we're lucky today?

00:09:30I thought they squandered three guilt-edged opportunities.

00:09:32Right, that's not luck, that's bad play on them.

00:09:34No, absolutely.

00:09:35So, again, again, no, they had some good moments and it was in that spell.

00:09:40But we feel that we were good enough in the game to win it.

00:09:44When you're wondering, there's also been a lot of teams that have won a championship who have to dig it

00:09:50out and get results and find a way to win.

00:09:51When the question's hanging over them, the question was hanging out of our team today and they've dragged themselves.

00:09:57And for all reasons, I've just said that, I'm not going to repeat, but we've scored three goals against a

00:10:00motherable team who don't normally lose a lot of goals.

00:10:02So, I think by scoring three goals, we've more than deserved to win the game and there was nothing lucky

00:10:07about it.

00:10:09Well, listen, everybody's entitled to their opinion on it.

00:10:12Fortunately, when we're on this platform, I'm allowed to give my opinion and boy, they were lucky.

00:10:18Listen, I think you look at the overall game, you look at some of the decisions, you look at the

00:10:23chances that motherable missed.

00:10:24You could argue that motherable deserves something out of the game, but at the end of the day, Derek McKinnons

00:10:29is right to back his team there.

00:10:30He's saying that we won the game.

00:10:32And I don't think he's ever going to say that they were lucky to win a game.

00:10:35I think he'll say it was 3-1.

00:10:37You're quite entitled to ask your question, but he's lucky.

00:10:41I think he's both to the point, but I think it's done and dusted now.

00:10:44And, you know, they move on.

00:10:47But, no, I do think if you're a neutral watching that game, you're thinking, motherable's a wee bit unlucky not

00:10:52to get into the game.

00:10:53But the Hearts fans and the players and the manager, I'm nobody worried about that now.

00:10:56Yeah, and that was the point I was making to him.

00:10:59Listen, it doesn't matter how your team play.

00:11:02If you carry a wee bit of luck, if you get that rub of the green, Mazvinisi, you're talking about

00:11:07one chance.

00:11:07Mazvinisi had two guilt-edged opportunities to score.

00:11:11They also had two other chances.

00:11:13One of them blasted over.

00:11:16I mean, there was a point in the second half, Alec.

00:11:18I mean, they had two or three good chances in the first half where I thought they dominated the game.

00:11:23And, again, I mentioned it last week.

00:11:25The whole stadium is now getting really tense.

00:11:28You know, they're rolling out everybody to sing the Hearts song, which is fine.

00:11:31They've got the atmosphere trying to build it up.

00:11:33Everybody's going crazy.

00:11:34And then, all of a sudden, that game kicked off.

00:11:36And Motherwell were dominating possession, playing their triangles, working out ways to get in behind them.

00:11:42And they had big chances.

00:11:44And the point is, it doesn't matter.

00:11:47Just if you can ride your luck out.

00:11:49There's a penalty that nobody noticed.

00:11:51I thought it was a handball, but it was a kick in the head.

00:11:54I thought it was a penalty.

00:11:56But you just need these wee moments where VAR picks it up.

00:11:59You get that wee turn of luck, the guy spots the penalty.

00:12:02Yeah.

00:12:03Yeah, listen, I think having seen the highlights.

00:12:06And, again, it's very difficult to see how the game is flowing.

00:12:09Because you're really getting the key moments.

00:12:13And you're absolutely right.

00:12:14West Manese had two opportunities.

00:12:16The one that came for the right-hand side, the boy blazes over the bar, which was a half chance

00:12:20for me.

00:12:21So they did create a few opportunities.

00:12:25The one thing you can label about this Hearts team is they're going to the wire.

00:12:29Because you said a few weeks ago it was very similar when they were in the stadium.

00:12:3170 minutes, anxiety.

00:12:33Yeah.

00:12:33And they get the goal.

00:12:35I think Shanklin come back.

00:12:37The penalty is a really interesting one for me.

00:12:39I mean, really, really interesting because...

00:12:41Is it a penalty?

00:12:42Well, this is the thing.

00:12:45In first viewing, you go, oh, he's kicked in my head, so it's a penalty.

00:12:49Then you start seeing the IFAB rules.

00:12:51That if you're on the ground and you go to head a ball.

00:12:54And if you're endangering an opponent or endangering yourself by heading the ball that low.

00:13:00It's a foul to our team.

00:13:00And it's a foul to the opposition.

00:13:02So, in this situation, it would be a foul under the rules.

00:13:05It's a foul to Motherwell as opposed to a penalty.

00:13:09And if you apply the rules properly when you're heading the ball on the ground,

00:13:13you're endangering yourself because ultimately then the boy then kicks him in the head.

00:13:17Yeah, but then...

00:13:17And I take your point on the interpretation of the rule.

00:13:21But the point here is that Kabori's going back the way.

00:13:24He doesn't know where the ball is.

00:13:27The ball actually moves and Welsh tries to clear it.

00:13:30And he misses it.

00:13:31And then he kicks his head.

00:13:33I don't think...

00:13:35I think Hearts are fortunate to get that penalty.

00:14:21you go and you duck down and you try and head the ball

00:14:23and the guy catches you about halfway, then they give it, your head's low.

00:14:28But that's about another foot and a half, two foot lower again.

00:14:31So under the interpretation of that IFAB rule,

00:14:35then the free kicks have been given to Motherwell.

00:14:39Listen, it's a great debate on it.

00:14:41I thought Hart's carried a wee bit of luck in fair play to him.

00:14:49But at the end of the day, I thought they were lucky.

00:15:30Playing through the lines and, you know,

00:15:31the pass, the ball round the face,

00:15:33the midfielder, making the run again.

00:15:35It just had a bit of everything.

00:15:37And then, obviously, the opportunities they created as well.

00:15:40It didn't look to me as if it was a team that was being ponderous

00:15:43and so forth.

00:15:44Then they created a couple of chances against a Hearts team

00:15:47that don't give a lot away.

00:15:48No, absolutely not.

00:15:49I mean, if they'd taken their chances,

00:15:51and, you know, Derek's interpretation of that's their bad luck

00:15:54or that's their poor finishing,

00:15:56is equally a pertinent point,

00:15:58because, quite simply,

00:16:00the Maswanisi chance,

00:16:01he lays one defender on his backside.

00:16:03He could have actually laid another one on his backside

00:16:05and walked round the goalkeeper.

00:16:07But it was such a big miss.

00:16:08But you look at it now,

00:16:10the facts are there,

00:16:11as far as Hearts are concerned,

00:16:13which is, quite simply,

00:16:14you've got Braga with 17 goals.

00:16:16You've got Shanklin with 17 goals.

00:16:19They've got goal scorers that could get them.

00:16:20And that's almost 12 months, Tom,

00:16:22since they've been beaten at 10.

00:16:23Yeah, and that could be the difference.

00:16:25I think Rangers have got goal scorers as well on their team.

00:16:27I don't think Celtic have.

00:16:28And that's what people are looking at now.
