Tam McManus believes Celtic & Rangers must spend big to stop Hearts winning the title

00:02:35And over the course of the weekend, Saturday and Sunday, we had some really interesting games.

00:02:39Of course, all eyes on the Sunday games because Hearts were taking on Rangers and Celtic were at home to Aberdeen.

00:02:46Lots of pressure for very different reasons.

00:02:48Ruffy, Tynecastle, it was absolutely bouncing.

00:02:51It was one of those games you couldn't take your eye off it.

00:02:54In the end, Hearts 2, Rangers 1.

00:02:56Yeah, I thought Rangers started particularly well.

00:02:58First 10, 15 minutes, a lot of good football.

00:03:01Not a lot of chances right enough.

00:03:02But I think in this game, the longer it went, the first goal was going to be important.

00:03:05And obviously, Hearts got that first goal, you know, lifted them.

00:03:10You know, and Celtic, sorry, Rangers went in a wee bit of a wobble after that.

00:03:14And then obviously, Hearts got the next one that made it even more difficult for Rangers.

00:03:18Yeah, I actually think we predicted, all of us predicted every game correct, I'm sure.

00:03:23We would have done a few quid.

00:03:24Yeah, we did.

00:03:25I think even the correct score, I think most of them said 2-1 to Hearts as well.

00:03:28So, yeah, I agree with Ruffy.

00:03:29I thought Rangers started the brighter in terms of keeping the ball possession.

00:03:33Big moment in the game is obviously the goal that's offside.

00:03:35You know, I think that's incredibly tight.

00:03:37You know, I don't think there's, I don't think there's clear, you know, it's a clear offside, Peter.

00:03:42So, for me, I thought he was onside.

00:03:44When I seen his foot coming out, I thought Rangers are a wee bit hard done by there.

00:03:48Obviously, the SFA, the VAR, the studio have got more angles than that, you would think.

00:03:54Because if that was their only angle, then I don't think you can tell that he was offside.

00:03:58So, that was a big moment in the game.

00:03:59If that goes in, it could be a different game.

00:04:00But I thought Hearts grew into the game half an hour, 40 minutes, and then they took over the game.

00:04:06They could have won the game comfortably.

00:04:07You know, they could have won by three or four.

00:04:09Rangers, you know, second half put a lot of bodies forward to try and get the next goal.

00:04:13And they were caught in the counterattack a few times.

00:04:15But I don't think there's any doubt that Hearts deserve to win.

00:04:18And, you know, I'm starting to get very nervous now, I must admit.

00:04:21You know, I thought after six, seven games, Hearts wouldn't maintain this.

00:04:24But, you know, there's no sign of them stopping or bottling it or bubble busting.

00:04:29Yeah.

00:04:30Ruffy, as Tam mentioned there, I still, you know, continually mention the fact that we should be embracing Arsene Wenger's attitude to it,

00:04:39which is clear daylight between defender and player.

00:04:43If you're going to call offside, start one, as Tam mentioned there, was extremely tight.

00:04:47They did go to VAR.

00:04:48Everybody was waiting.

00:04:49Usual, you know, beyond the one minute to get a decision on it.

00:04:53And in the end, it was called offside.

00:04:56A huge sigh of relief inside the stadium.

00:05:00But then from there, the reason why Rangers lost Ruffy, it's quite simply, I just don't think they've got players that are creative enough.

00:05:09Raskin battled away.

00:05:11The rest of them, I just didn't see any flair whatsoever.

00:05:15There was just this kind of a, apart from the, this group of ultras who'd just bang the drum constantly,

00:05:20up at the top tier of Rangers fans were just looking down.

00:05:22And there's almost an air of resignation about it all.

00:05:25Yeah, I've said it all along.

00:05:26If the Rangers go behind, they seem to toil.

00:05:28Certain players seem to toil.

00:05:30They don't show the ability that they've got.

00:05:32You know, we were talking about the wee boy Moore the other night.

00:05:35I know he's only 18, you know, but he seems to be a young guy on the up, you know.

00:05:40But haven't they experienced all this?

00:05:42You know, if they go behind, he's got to dig in.

00:05:44And, you know, these kind of players are affected by it.

00:05:47But, no, like Tom, I thought Hearts, at the end of the day, had, I mean, particularly Shankland,

00:05:52had two or three chances, you know, to really, really finish it off.

00:05:56And I know you're going to come to the goal, the Butlin goal.

00:06:00Yeah.

00:06:00He will be disappointed, there's no doubt about that.

00:06:02You never...

00:06:03Both of them?

00:06:04No, not the first one.

00:06:06Wait a minute, he's kick out.

00:06:07He's kick out.

00:06:07Oh, they kick out.

00:06:08Yeah, but if you want a goalkeeper to build up for the back, that's going to happen.

00:06:12Yeah.

00:06:13Because he's not going to be precise in any of the kicks that he's got to find somebody.

00:06:16But at least he's made the effort to try and find somebody.

00:06:20But certainly the second one, he will be disappointed.

00:06:22But I can see why he lost it.

00:06:24It was so near to his foot that there's no way he can get down that quick.

00:06:29He's like that one against, was it by Kraken last week?

00:06:32Like, when you're hoping the ball's going to hit your foot and deflect or something like that.

00:06:37But no, he will be.

00:06:37You can see he was disappointed he lost it.

00:06:39I thought it was a fantastic finish, Peter.

00:06:41Did you?

00:06:43He put it in the only place that he could score.

00:06:45It was that little gap between his foot and the near post.

00:06:48It was precise.

00:06:49He knew exactly what he was doing.

00:06:51And yeah, the goalkeeper will get stick for it.

00:06:53You shouldn't get beat at your near post.

00:06:54But I thought it was a fantastic improvisation from Roland Shanklin to put it in that near post

00:06:59in a crucial time in the game.

00:07:02Such an acute angle.

00:07:03Such an acute angle.

00:07:04He's trying to just do the keeper at his near post.

00:07:06He catches it perfect.

00:07:08And yeah, you're going to blame the goalkeeper.

00:07:10But it's very difficult to get down.

00:07:11You can't get down that quick at your foot.

00:07:14A ball's width to put it in.

00:07:16And he put it right in that gap.

00:07:17So I thought it was a great finish.

00:07:19The other aspect of it is you're right, Ruffey.

00:07:21He could have scored a hat-trick.

00:07:22And this is why I obviously think that if Hearts are going to win the league, they're going

00:07:26to have to go and buy another striker.

00:07:28Not because Shanklin is not up to the mark.

00:07:30I mean, he's just absolutely grafting the boys, running his socks off as well.

00:07:34And that's one of the key elements of why I thought Hearts were going to win this game

00:07:39is because their commitment, their graft for everything.

00:07:43I mean, they absolutely put in a shift.

00:07:45I mean, Devlin was fantastic.

00:07:47Finlay was man of the match for me.

00:07:49But every one of them worked.

00:07:51And do you know what was the measure of them, Tam?

00:07:54They hunted in packs.

00:07:56So if Rangers had the ball, there was two or three around the guy to try and get that ball

00:08:00back off him.

00:08:01Every one of them was busting a gut at every moment in the game.

00:08:06And I thought that was the real difference.

00:08:08You could sense they were well up for it.

00:08:09You know those games when you know a team is up for it in every area?

00:08:13Yeah, listen, it was an enormous game for both clubs.

00:08:15But yeah, you're right.

00:08:16I think just Hearts are so well organised.

00:08:18They're so strong defensively.

00:08:19They'll be disappointed with the goal they lost at the end.

00:08:21A bit of a lack of communication with the goalkeeper and the defender.

00:08:23I'm sure he gets a finish, but it's obviously too late to do anything.

00:08:27But yeah, they were solid the whole game.

00:08:29Cam and Devlin have probably been the player of the year so far.

00:08:32I never thought he was this good until this season.

00:08:34I thought that he was one of those where he would just rat about,

00:08:37get into people's faces.

00:08:39I didn't think he had that much quality.

00:08:40But I don't know if it's Derek's astronaut who played a different role

00:08:43where he's more confident in going and getting the ball off the back two

00:08:45or the back three and starting attacks.

00:08:47He's been superb this season.

00:08:50And, you know, Hearts have got Magnussen in there as well,

00:08:52again in there, ratting about.

00:08:55And I just thought they were a real good team performance from Hearts.

00:08:59And as I said, I think the lad, you know, if you're looking at the title race

00:09:03at the minute, I think Celtic need two or three,

00:09:05maybe a couple of strikers and a dominant centre-half.

00:09:07I think Hearts need a striker, maybe a right-back,

00:09:10maybe a central midfield player.

00:09:11Rangers, if you're looking, what did Rangers need in January?

00:09:15Eight?

00:09:16Nine?

00:09:17Full-back four?

00:09:18A creative midfielder?

00:09:19A striker?

00:09:20A winger?

00:09:21You know, it's...

00:09:22There's nobody with a trick term.

00:09:24No, they're very predictable Rangers.

00:09:27They've got three guys in the middle of the park,

00:09:28Diamandi, Raskin and Barron,

00:09:30who all want to break up the play

00:09:32and that's the best part of their game.

00:09:33Peter, they've not got any creativity to go and thread someone through.

00:09:36Yeah.

00:09:37They don't hurt people.

00:09:38Yeah.

00:09:38I mean, Diamandi gets subbed.

00:09:41I mean, he was totally and utterly, for me,

00:09:43just nondescript in the middle of the park.

00:09:46Gassama, I mean, what, you know...

00:09:49Yeah, he's fell off a cliff.

00:09:49One game every four?

00:09:51Yeah, he's fell off a cliff.

00:09:52Peter, I think Mikey Moore was probably the most dangerous player for Rangers.

00:09:56Cermiti came on and done OK, put himself about,

00:09:58but you're looking at that Rangers team and you're thinking,

00:10:00who's actually a banker to stay in that team at the minute in January?

00:10:04Who would you hang your hat on and say,

00:10:06oh, he can't get rid of him?

00:10:07I don't think there's any.

00:10:09No.

00:10:09To be honest with you, right now for Rangers, so...

00:10:10I would keep Barron and Raskin in there.

00:10:12Yeah, Barron and...

00:10:13I thought Raskin was poor at the weekend,

00:10:14but Barron, yeah, he gets about and does well,

00:10:16but Rangers have got very, very little quality midfield to front.

00:10:20Yeah, absolutely.

00:10:20And perhaps the biggest indictment of where Rangers are, Ruffey,

00:10:25is afterwards when I went into the press conference,

00:10:28Derek McInnes says, you know, I expected to win here at Tynecastle.

00:10:32It's a fortress for them.

00:10:33And there's a confidence about Derek McInnes

00:10:36in the players that he has available as well.

00:10:38You know, he's trying to keep a lid with every player.

00:10:43You could tell when Stuart Finlay came into the press conference,

00:10:45it was all, it's one game at a time, you know, we know where we are,

00:10:49we're doing well.

00:10:50And Derek was quick to point out, Ruffey,

00:10:53something that I think maybe has irked him a little,

00:10:55which is basically, we've all been saying,

00:10:58the standard of the league is poor.

00:10:59That's not Harser's fault.

00:11:00Harser there, and his point was,

00:11:02we're there on merit.

00:11:04We're exactly where we should be.

00:11:05Yeah, you're right.

00:11:06You know, right from the very start,

00:11:07they put their intentions out there to everybody.

00:11:10This is the way they were going to play.

00:11:12And they've got the wins, they've got the points.

00:11:14And we all know anyway, going to Tynecastle is a fortress.

00:11:18You know, it's a tremendous atmosphere.

00:11:20It's a cauldron when you go there,

00:11:21particularly if they're winning and their fans are up for it.

00:11:24The stadium's absolutely bouncing.

00:11:26And it is a wee bit, you know,

00:11:28when you're playing in that game and they're up for it

00:11:30and they're winning,

00:11:31it puts you on a wee bit of a back foot

00:11:33because obviously everything's going right for them.

00:11:36So, no, they're ticking all the boxes just now.

00:11:39I think we're all just waiting to see,

00:11:40is there a challenge coming?

00:11:41Yeah, and over and above that,

00:11:43he did say something that I think every Hars fan

00:11:46wants to hear, Tam, which is quite simply,

00:11:48yeah, we're good.

00:11:50We're there on merit, but we need to improve.

00:11:52We need to get players in as well

00:11:54to help this squad.

00:11:55And that is exactly what the Hars fans want to hear.

00:11:58Yeah, listen, I think that Derek and Tony Bloom

00:12:01and the Jamestown Analytics people

00:12:03will be scouring everywhere, you know,

00:12:05in Europe to see who they can bring in,

00:12:07who they can strengthen the squad.

00:12:08I think they'll bring in,

00:12:09I don't think they need to bring in loads.

00:12:11I think they just need to bring in maybe two or three guys

00:12:12that can get in and start and be cover.

00:12:15But in terms of Rangers and the Hars at the minute,

00:12:17the fear factor's totally gone for the whole firm this season.

00:12:20I mean, if I was a player,

00:12:21if I'm a Hars player now

00:12:21and that Rangers team sheet comes in at the weekend,

00:12:24I'm thinking,

00:12:24we'd be disappointed if we don't beat them.

00:12:26You know, whereas even 10, 15, 20, 25 years ago,

00:12:30the Celtic and Rangers team came in

00:12:32and you went,

00:12:33Michael Mulls, Avaladzi, Larson,

00:12:35Bravchick,

00:12:37we got out of here two or three today,

00:12:38we're going to be doing well.

00:12:39Yeah.

00:12:39That fear factor is totally gone.

00:12:41I don't think,

00:12:42I think Hars are the best team in the league right now.

00:12:45Obviously, they're top of the league.

00:12:46I think they're the best team in the league.

00:12:47And if they strengthen

00:12:48and have the same second part of the season

00:12:50as they've done the first part,

00:12:52then they're going to win the league, Peter.

00:12:53But you would expect Celtic,

00:12:54you would expect Rangers

00:12:55to go and spend big

00:12:57because I think they will have to improve

00:12:58their starting line-up

00:12:59to go and catch Hars.

00:13:00Well, we did see it at the tail end

00:13:01of last week, Ruffey,

00:13:02and I think it rings true again

00:13:06when we get to talk about Celtic

00:13:08against Aberdeen.

00:13:09But there isn't a fear factor.

00:13:11Every player that they sign

00:13:13in this January transfer window,

00:13:15I think,

00:13:15has to be a starting player

00:13:16and has to hit the ground running.

00:13:19That's the big problem about it.

00:13:20And over and above that,

00:13:22I'm looking and I'm saying to myself,

00:13:24Danny Roll was talking about

00:13:26we missed a big opportunity.

00:13:28This one is hard to take.

00:13:30I think that result at the weekend

00:13:34puts Rangers out of any title talk now.

00:13:38It's a lot of points.

00:13:3912 points, isn't it?

00:13:40You know, it's a big ask for anybody.

00:13:43You can't see Rangers going on

00:13:45a terrific run

00:13:46that they would have to do

00:13:48to close that gap.

00:13:49You're looking at Hars

00:13:50and I think they've had

00:13:52their wee wobble

00:13:53that they weren't getting beat.

00:13:54They were maybe dropping

00:13:55a couple of points here and there.

00:13:57But I certainly think

00:13:58they've had theirs.

00:13:59You know, I think Celtic look

00:14:01the obvious challenger now.

00:14:03Although, I think other teams

00:14:05in the league,

00:14:06the likes of Motherwell,

00:14:07the likes of Aberdeen,

00:14:08up at Aberdeen,

00:14:09will test them.

00:14:11You know, but I still think

00:14:12at this moment in time

00:14:13when you're sitting up there

00:14:14with the amount of points you've got,

00:14:15you feel as if you can beat everybody.

00:14:17So it's up to everybody else

00:14:18to challenge them.

00:14:19We did mention that

00:14:21four points out of six

00:14:22would be good for Hearts

00:14:24over the two games.

00:14:25So their next match is

00:14:26Hibs away,

00:14:27then they've got Livingston at home

00:14:28and then they're away to Dundee.

00:14:30So I'm looking there

00:14:31and I'm saying to myself,

00:14:33seven out of nine

00:14:34will probably be the minimum

00:14:35they're thinking.

00:14:36Although the way Hearts are thinking

00:14:38at the moment,

00:14:38they'll probably be thinking

00:14:39there's a good nine points

00:14:40on offer there.

00:14:41Yeah, listen,

00:14:42obviously Hibs away

00:14:42is going to be a tough tie.

00:14:44You know,

00:14:44Hibs have not been great this season

00:14:45but it's a derby game

00:14:46and anything can happen

00:14:47but you would expect

00:14:48Hearts to look after

00:14:49Livingston at home

00:14:50and then Dundee away.

00:14:51You know,

00:14:51so I'm looking at the Hearts

00:14:53and I'm looking at the Rangers fixtures.

00:14:54I think they've got Motherwell,

00:14:56St Mirren,

00:14:57Celtic away,

00:14:57then Aberdeen home and away.

00:14:59That's a really tough run

00:15:00of fixtures for the Rangers

00:15:01in the next five.

00:15:02So they could be miles off the pace

00:15:05come into January,

00:15:06first couple of weeks in January

00:15:07and then it doesn't matter

00:15:09what they do in the transfer window.

00:15:10If you're 15, 16, 18 points behind,

00:15:12you're looking ahead to next season.

00:15:14So yeah,

00:15:15I think that the next few games,

00:15:16Celtic have got a decent run of games.

00:15:18They can go and try and catch Hearts

00:15:19but I just don't see anything

00:15:22for this Rangers team

00:15:22that's going to tell me

00:15:24that they're going to go

00:15:25and challenge for the league this season.

00:15:26I don't think they will.

00:15:27I think they're looking at

00:15:29maybe being second or third at best.

00:15:31I think the Rangers battle

00:15:32is for second.

00:15:32I think they're out of it.

00:15:34Ruffey?

00:15:35On the evidence of yesterday,

00:15:37yeah,

00:15:37when you're looking at a team

00:15:38like Hearts

00:15:39who have been superior

00:15:40most of the year,

00:15:42you know,

00:15:42they will say,

00:15:43yeah,

00:15:43we're on a wee run there.

00:15:45I think it was five or six games

00:15:46where they're beating

00:15:46the other sides,

00:15:48you know,

00:15:48quite easily.

00:15:49he'll have to continue

00:15:51that kind of run.

00:15:52He'll hope he can get back

00:15:53on another run

00:15:54but as Tam says,

00:15:55these games that are coming up

00:15:56are going to be

00:15:57really important,

00:15:59you know,

00:15:59you can't see them

00:16:00going on a winning run

00:16:01in the A5 games

00:16:02so it'll be interesting

00:16:03to see,

00:16:04we're all waiting,

00:16:05I think every supporter

00:16:06will be waiting

00:16:07to see in January

00:16:08what kind of influence

00:16:10the new players

00:16:11that are coming in

00:16:12are going to do

00:16:13to these teams.

00:16:14Yeah,

00:16:16nobody gets the league

00:16:17at Christmas.

00:16:18Stephen,

00:16:18you're absolutely right.

00:16:19It's certainly something

00:16:22that I think everybody's

00:16:23got to bear in mind

00:16:23but when you look at

00:16:25the way Hearts are playing

00:16:26I mean,

00:16:26I was thoroughly impressed

00:16:27with them yesterday,

00:16:28you know,

00:16:29in that stadium

00:16:29watching them,

00:16:30watching their movement,

00:16:32watching their commitment,

00:16:33watching their graft,

00:16:34watching their belief

00:16:34rippling through

00:16:36the whole side

00:16:37and then listening

00:16:38to the players

00:16:38afterwards as well.

00:16:40There is a real feeling

00:16:41among them

00:16:42that they've got

00:16:43what it takes.

00:16:44I think they're just

00:16:44trying,

00:16:45they're probably not

00:16:46openly talking

00:16:47about league titles

00:16:48but they're probably

00:16:49looking and saying

00:16:50look,

00:16:50we can go into a game

00:16:51and beat a team.

00:16:52They're up there

00:16:53to be hit.

00:16:54They're up there

00:16:55whereas it would be

00:16:56Rangers and Celtic

00:16:57are up there

00:16:58and every other team

00:16:59want to hit them

00:17:00in the dressing rooms.

00:17:02Do you think their

00:17:03mentality is the question?

00:17:05I don't think mentality

00:17:07it's just that

00:17:07they've never been there

00:17:08before.

00:17:10You know,

00:17:10the pressure is different

00:17:11when you're up there

00:17:12and people are

00:17:13trying to get you.

00:17:14You know,

00:17:15you could see it

00:17:16when Liverpool

00:17:16were on that run

00:17:17of winning

00:17:18every year.

00:17:19Every game,

00:17:20whether it was

00:17:21Brighton or whoever,

00:17:22you want to get them,

00:17:24you want to take

00:17:24points off them

00:17:25and I think Hearts

00:17:26are now the team

00:17:27that everybody's after.

00:17:28You know,

00:17:28they're the ones

00:17:29that are going to

00:17:30lift their game

00:17:30every time they come up

00:17:32against Hearts

00:17:32and that will be

00:17:33a different challenge

00:17:34for the Hearts players

00:17:35that have never

00:17:36been there before.

00:17:36It'll be interesting

00:17:37to see who he signs.

00:17:38I can't wait to see

00:17:39the one or two

00:17:40or three players

00:17:41that they'll look

00:17:42and say,

00:17:42right,

00:17:42this is what we need

00:17:43to try and make this

00:17:44a real tilt

00:17:45to try and make sure

00:17:46that obviously

00:17:47as everybody knows

00:17:48who watches this programme

00:17:49and listens to the podcast

00:17:50to try and make sure

00:17:51that Tam's in a full

00:17:52Hearts kit

00:17:53with socks,

00:17:54boots on,

00:17:56Puma,

00:17:57World Cup,

00:17:58Adidas ones

00:17:58and then the shorts
