00:00And ahead of the crucial three-day special session of Parliament, the contours of how the delimitation exercise will be
00:08playing out is becoming clear.
00:10The government has proposed the overall numbers of MPs going up. How will that be impacting and what will be
00:18the contours like?
00:20That will be the Constitution Amendment for the implementation of the Women's Reservation.
00:24Remember, Women's Reservation was passed in the first session of the new Parliament building in 2023.
00:30The three-day session has been called by the government to ensure its implementation by the 2029 Lok Sabha polls.
00:39What we can tell our viewers now is that the government has proposed that the total number of Lok Sabha
00:43seats be increased to up to 850.
00:45Of these, 815 will be allocated to the states and the remaining 35 will be reserved for the union territories.
00:51And this is part of the draft bill. This is what the draft bill says.
00:56The draft bill which has been shared by the government with all its members of Parliament.
01:02The draft bill which has now been sent to all the MPs has spoken about how it will be divided.
01:11850 MPs in all. Remember, the present strength of the Lok Sabha is 543.
01:16So it is likely to go up by around 307 more seats.
01:22543 plus 307, it will come to around 850.
01:27And that's how the delimitation will impact the overall number of seats.
01:33This is what the content of the draft bill of the Constitution Amendment looks like.
01:39Ashwarya is joining us. Ashwarya, I think none of the MPs can object to it because even the southern states
01:45will have a significant increase just as the other states will have.
01:50Well, you know, Maria, this is the assurance that has also been given by the government.
01:54Not once, but many times the government has said that you do not need to worry because there will be
01:58a straight 50% increase in the number of seats.
02:01Let's just take a look at the number that we are looking at the moment.
02:04850, that will be the total number of Lok Sabha seats.
02:06Out of these, 35 will be reserved for the union territories.
02:09The central government, in fact, has now shared this draft bill because, Maria, if you remember the opposition party,
02:14specifically the Congress party time and again was speaking about the fact that they do not know the kind of
02:19amendments that the government is looking at bringing.
02:22And now we have not one, but let me tell you, there are three bills that the government very clearly
02:26is looking at because these are the constitutional changes that one is looking at.
02:30The Constitutional Amendment Bill, that is something which will be brought in, the Delimitation Bill 2026, and the Union Territories
02:36Amendment Bill.
02:37So these are the three bills that we will see being spoken about, being discussed, and being passed in these
02:42three days.
02:43So very crucial three days, but equally crucial is the India Block meeting also, Maria, which will take place tomorrow
02:48because the opposition will now have to strategize with regards to what they want to do in these three days.
02:54And whether they will support the government or not is a clarity that we get by late evening tomorrow, Maria.
03:01All right, Ashwarya. Thank you for giving us that clarity.
03:04So in the three days, on 16th, 17th, 18th, when the Parliament meets, there will be three Constitutional Amendment Bill,
03:11which will be taken up for passage and voting, which will essentially be about amending the Constitution,
03:18assemblies, and also of the Union Territories, because the government is proposing in its draft bill
03:24that the overall numbers of seats in the Lok Sabha be increased from presently, which is standing at 543,
03:32to 850, an addition of 307 more seats.
03:36Now let's go.
03:36Let's go.
