00:00We are backstage at Coachella in the K-Rock Artist Compound. I'm Kevin Ryder.
00:05This is Megan Holliday. And these guys... Joyce Manor! Joyce Manor has joined us!
00:10How is it, is it your first time at Coachella? This is number two, second time.
00:15Two, okay. 2015? Yep, that's the one. What do you remember from that year?
00:20Hanging out with Busy Phillips. What? I love Freaks and Geeks and I was like,
00:25this is, it doesn't get cooler than this. We played the K-Rock House in 2015 with War on Drugs
00:31and Run the Jewels, I think.
00:33It was really fun. Really cool. It was a really cool experience.
00:36Yeah. What do you love most about playing Coachella? Is it catering?
00:39Is it? Yeah. Catering is really good, yeah.
00:42It blew my mind, yeah. Wait, what do they have?
00:48Today it's, they had like lox and like bagels and stuff for breakfast. Oh, nice.
00:52And then just like your standard kind of like eggs and bacon and veggie stuff, but done really well.
00:57But the dessert today, Matt was like, you have to check it out.
01:00I stay away. It looks so good. Pies. They have like an ice cream bar fridge that you just reach
01:04in and grab.
01:05Oh, that's my heaven. Get over there. You gotta get over there.
01:08That's my heaven. Let's talk about your new album. New-ish, I guess.
01:12Yeah, yeah, it's new. Yeah.
01:13Bar I used to go to? I used to go to this bar.
01:15I used to go to this bar. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
01:17That's what I said. Tell us about the album.
01:22It's our seventh album and we're insanely proud of it.
01:25It was produced by Brett Gearwitz from Bad Religion and Epitaph.
01:29And you know, he's produced like Rancid and No Effects and all these great bands that we grew up on.
01:36And so getting to work with him was amazing and he did a great job producing this.
01:39Does it up your game a little bit because you respect him?
01:42He really did. He's good at coaching good takes and yeah, he was just really involved with the album.
01:47And I think he's a big reason it came out so good.
01:50You guys have been a band for such a long time now.
01:53And this was a really big year for you.
01:56And I would say you have a lot of new fans.
01:58Have you actually felt that shift or do you feel like maybe today when you play,
02:03you're going to kind of notice like, whoa, we're drawing, you know, bigger than before.
02:07We really are. You know, like the last couple of run of shows we did,
02:11there was people who only knew the new songs, which it was just really, really cool.
02:15Yeah. To just still be growing, you know, almost 20 years into our career.
02:19And yeah, it's fantastic.
02:20Are you excited to catch people's eyes? You play the Gobi?
02:23Yeah, the Gobi.
02:24510.
02:25Mm-hmm.
02:25Are you excited to catch people's eyes that are just walking by and have no idea who you are?
02:29A hundred percent, yeah.
02:30People just trying to get out of the sun.
02:32Yes.
02:32You know, getting in the shade.
02:33Today for sure.
02:34Just looky-loos, catching the vibe.
02:36A hundred percent, yeah.
02:37And you guys being from Torrance and everything, did you, I mean,
02:40I would have to imagine that playing Coachella was the ultimate dream, right?
02:45Did you guys actually attend the festival when you were younger?
02:48Never did, actually.
02:49I was broke, I was broke.
02:50None of you.
02:51Yeah, yeah.
02:51I was too broke.
02:52None of us, yeah.
02:52You never even tried to sneak in, you guys? Come on.
02:55I hate the heat so much.
02:57Yeah.
02:57Well, this is perfect for you.
02:59Yeah.
02:59This is 104 earlier today, so.
03:02We're just broke cowards.
03:03We can't bring you into stuff, so, yeah.
03:06Now you get to be here and be paid, so there's that.
03:09Nice.
03:09Yeah, exactly.
03:10Paid off.
03:11We're going to play your new song in a minute, the bar I used to go to.
03:14Yeah, pretty close.
03:16That's pretty close.
03:16I used to go to this bar.
03:17Tell us about that song.
03:19That was the first good song I wrote for this record.
03:21That kind of, like, motivated me to, like, all right, that's the bar I used to go to, you know,
03:26that we have to kind of live up to.
03:29Yeah, it's about kind of a very unremarkable bar and just kind of the very unremarkable memories you have from
03:39a bar you used to go to that isn't there anymore.
03:42Yeah.
03:43Interesting.
03:43We're going to play it in a second with the 420 catch of the day.
03:46It is Joyce Manor.
03:47They are here at KROQ playing again at 510 on the Gobi stage.
03:52Yeah.
03:52Yeah.
03:52And thank you for stopping by, you guys.
03:54Thank you guys so much for coming by.
03:55Really nice chatting with you.
03:56Great to see you.
