00:00It is the world famous K-Rock. I'm Megan Holliday. It's day three backstage live at Coachella and I'm here
00:05with Black Flag. Welcome. Welcome guys. What's up? Yeah. So obviously this is a new era for Black Flag. So
00:15I was wondering, Greg, if you can kind of talk about, you know, how you guys all met and really
00:20the coming together of this new time for the band.
00:24Wow. Well, we started about a year ago and David and Bryce just listened to a lot of drummers and
00:38bass players and they were just the best.
00:43And is it true, Max, that you were actually at a Black Flag show at some point and you were
00:50in the front and you were singing along?
00:52Yeah, for sure. That's what me and Greg met.
00:54Okay. So, but how?
00:56Okay. It's one of my like favorite bands. I really like Black Flag and I grew up with them. And
01:00then I was super excited. I had tickets to go to one of their shows and I was going by
01:04myself.
01:04And what show was it? Where were you?
01:06I was in Vancouver.
01:07Okay.
01:07Yeah. And then after I went to the show and I was there front row singing along to all the
01:13songs and just enjoying the show. I didn't think much of it. And then at the end of the show,
01:18Greg comes and talks to me and he asked me if I've been in a band before and we get
01:22to talking and we exchange contact information.
01:27And I honestly didn't expect much from that. He said he wanted to make music with me, but I didn't,
01:32you know, think anything would come from it.
01:34Yeah, sure, Greg.
01:34And then it was a month after that, that he asked me to be in the band to see if
01:39I'd like to try it out.
01:41That's un...
01:42And my life changed from there. It was crazy.
01:44Absolutely unbelievable.
01:46I was a waitress before, so...
01:47Oh my God. And living in Vancouver? Are you from there or where are you from?
01:51Canada, but yeah, I've just been... I was living there temporarily. I had been traveling around for a bit, so...
01:56Okay.
01:56This is kind of like the perfect situation for me because I love to travel, so it's been really great.
02:00I love it.
02:01Yeah. And did you have a background in singing or in music at all?
02:05Um, not necessarily. Like, I've always really been really into music, but I've never like created music on my own
02:12or been really a part of a band.
02:14Like, my first band was a school band where I played the saxophone.
02:18Nice.
02:18That's the only thing that I can really think of.
02:20It's sexy. Yeah.
02:22Uh-huh.
02:23And you guys, where are you from? And how did you two meet? Have you been long-time friends, or...?
02:28No, I still don't know this guy.
02:31Me neither.
02:32I grew up in Texas.
02:33Okay.
02:34I grew up in Huntington Beach, actually.
02:36Oh, really? Oh, you're from HB? Okay.
02:37Yeah, then I moved to Texas like four or five years ago.
02:40Wow, wow.
02:41So we live close together. I live in Texas now.
02:44Okay.
02:44And we're pretty close, so it makes things easy that way.
02:49Absolutely.
02:50So it must be a big deal being from Huntington Beach and all, and knowing that you're playing Coachella.
02:56Have you ever attended just as a fan in the past?
03:00No, I haven't.
03:01Okay.
03:01I've never been to Coachella, so this is kind of a cool experience.
03:03But it was cool to, like, get into Black Flag.
03:06Then everybody I knew from living in OC, like a lot of drummers and musicians and stuff from, like, playing
03:11in, like, little surf punk bands and stuff back in high school.
03:13Like, them all being like, holy crap, you're in Black Flag now.
03:16Seriously.
03:17That was cool.
03:17And Greg, has Black Flag played Coachella in the past, or is this the first time?
03:23No, this is the first time.
03:24Okay, amazing.
03:25And how are you feeling going into this, you know, playing today?
03:30Oh, great.
03:31Yeah.
03:32I'm really looking forward to it.
03:33We have a relatively short set.
03:36Not relatively.
03:37Very short set.
03:38Rock, you know, so two-minute songs.
03:41Well, our regular sets are, we usually do two sets, one hour, 55 minutes each.
03:48Oh, wow.
03:48Okay.
03:48So we usually play a very long time.
03:51So we just kind of had to choose between a lot of songs.
03:55Condense everything down.
03:56Yeah, but we're really looking forward to it and to play for some different people that might not really have
04:04heard us much or whatever.
04:06That's one thing good about a festival.
04:09You get different new people that just give it a chance because they're hanging around.
04:17Absolutely, yeah.
04:18It's a multi-generational festival, and you're going to get all sorts of different people out in the crowd.
04:23And how do you feel like you honor the legacy of the band, but also you're in this new era,
04:30which might include writing new music together and things like that?
04:34Yeah, I don't know.
04:35No, I'm not, I don't really, I just look about what I'm doing now, you know.
04:40You're living in the moment.
04:42Yeah.
04:43Yeah.
04:43What's one thing that you guys do before you play a festival?
04:48What's maybe like a pre-show ritual or just something you got to do before you go on stage?
04:53Hit catering.
04:54Hit catering?
04:55Yes.
04:56The catering here at Coachella is always on point, by the way.
05:00Yeah, it's really good today.
05:02Some good vegan food, too.
05:04Oh, nice.
05:04Yeah, I like to practice a lot before shows and just kind of get warmed up.
05:10Get the energy flowing?
05:11Yeah.
05:12Yeah, absolutely.
05:13Well, I am so excited.
05:15I mean, congratulations, you guys.
05:16You're in the most legendary punk rock band, and I'm very excited to get to watch you today.
05:22So, have a great set, and thank you so much for joining us.
05:26Thank you, Meg.
05:26Yeah, thank you.
05:27This was really cool.
05:28Yeah, awesome.
05:29It is K-Rock.
05:30Black flag.
05:31Thanks for watching.
