00:00Special treat here on Sean and RJ Friday edition on your official home of the Dallas Cowboys,
00:05105.3 The Fan, a guy that I can already tell dominated all the pre-draft interviews
00:11and all the personality.
00:12I can already tell he's Josh Cameron, Baylor wide receiver in studio on the fan cam,
00:17Twitch, and YouTube.
00:19He's spry.
00:20He's not half asleep.
00:21He came in here with all the energy, the positivity, and I can already, all the character concerns,
00:27they're off the table.
00:28Good morning.
00:29Thanks for joining us.
00:30Good morning.
00:30Thanks for having me.
00:31How was Indy and the whole interview process stuff?
00:34Did you get thrown off by anything?
00:36Yeah.
00:36No, the process was actually really smooth for me, really just kind of talk with the different teams.
00:41I had really one formal interview.
00:44That was with Atlanta, and then I had different informal interviews.
00:47But kind of like beforehand, like you were saying, I didn't really have character concerns,
00:52so I didn't feel like anyone was just trying to get under my skin or anything like that.
00:55Were you trained well for it?
00:57I would say, yeah.
00:59I did media training at Baylor, and then I did like the Big 12 all-media thing up at
01:05the Star, like a couple years.
01:07And then we really just kind of talking with the different people, just kind of, I kind
01:11of got used to that already.
01:12Do they look at you weird?
01:13Like, you stayed in the same place all four years now?
01:16Nobody does that.
01:17Yeah, no, they're like, oh, that's actually really surprising, because they're like, I
01:23was actually there for five years, so they're like, wow, Baylor, and they write that down
01:26and kind of shake their head.
01:27They're like, yeah, that's really rare nowadays.
01:29So it's kind of funny to kind of see that shift, but yeah, no, Baylor was awesome, man.
01:34Was there any question that threw you off, or did they try to get you off your game?
01:38Um, so I'm a big receiver, and so they were like, one, I forgot what team it was.
01:44This was actually at the Senior Bowl, but one of them was just like, so you know you're
01:47a big receiver, if you were to like put on some more weight and play like an H-back type
01:51job, I was like, I don't know about an H-back, that's a little bit different, you know, I'm
01:56more than a receiver, I'm a slot, I can get in there for sure, I'm not afraid to block
02:00or anything, but that's a little different for sure.
02:02But yeah, no, that was probably the craziest question I got for sure.
02:05Has it been weird at all?
02:06Well, like during this process, you'll talk to a bunch of different guys who are coming
02:09out in the draft, and a lot of them will say like, it's so, it feels so little about football
02:13like at times, like a lot of the training you're doing isn't necessarily for game training,
02:17it's for testing, or a lot of the interviews like stray away from even like, we're talking
02:21about football at this point, they're trying to more figure out the person, is that something
02:24that has been odd to you, of just like, man, it feels so bizarre that this job interview
02:29is so little about the job at times?
02:31Yeah, it's definitely, it's definitely interesting, it's like, because some of the interviews
02:36kind of like what you were saying, it was like, no football at all, really just trying
02:39to get to know me, like my background, my family, like how I grew up, and like maybe
02:44talk like a minute about football, things like that.
02:46But then you have some interviews where it's like straight football type deal.
02:49So it's definitely that balance.
02:51Then when it comes to like training, yeah, it's like straight, specific drills to be precise
02:56here, get the best time as possible.
02:58And so I think I'm getting towards the end of that process.
03:02And so just getting back to being able to get back to football training, I think that's
03:07going to be really cool.
03:07But yeah, it's just a part of the process, for sure.
03:10It's definitely a little different, though.
03:11Describe your game.
03:13So yeah, I'm a tough nose receiver.
03:15I'm someone who has the yak ability, I make the tough contested grabs.
03:21I'm really just someone who's an all around receiver.
03:24Same thing like I was saying before, I can get down and dirty.
03:27I love to block.
03:28I have great blocking tape.
03:30Let the really just sell out for my teammates, because that's something at Baylor that we
03:34really just prided ourselves on.
03:35So really just like a multifaceted receiver that can just kind of do it all, for sure.
03:39Josh Cameron, Cedar Park High School.
03:41Born and raised, Austin.
03:43Texas Stars.
03:44Texas Stars.
03:45Texas Stars.
03:46Yeah.
03:46So you're a little bit of a foodie.
03:49I see the Cajun pasta on your Instagram.
03:51For sure.
03:52Your fiance, congratulations.
03:54Thank you, thank you.
03:54Can cook as well.
03:55Yeah.
03:56So are you a barbecue connoisseur, too?
03:58Yeah, that's funny.
03:59My parents actually have a barbecue restaurant called Pawpaw's Barbecue down in Austin.
04:04Yeah, really?
04:05Pawpaw's Barbecue, yeah.
04:07That is a fierce battle to be a barbecue place in Austin, right?
04:11For sure, yeah.
04:12There's a whole lot of competition, but they're doing great.
04:15Have you ever been to Franklin's?
04:16I have.
04:17Did you have to stand in line?
04:19See, it's been a minute.
04:20Yeah.
04:20So I went when we were like a little bit younger.
04:22But yeah, they've had a line for all these years.
04:26Is there one that jumps out outside of your families in Austin as your one seat?
04:31If your friends are saying, I'm going to travel to Austin, where do I need to go, Josh?
04:35I'd probably say Style Switch.
04:37They have good barbecue as well.
04:39They have a couple of Austin locations.
04:40And then I'm in the Cedar Park area.
04:42They have a location out there.
04:43So Style Switch is pretty good, for sure.
04:46And you smoke yourself?
04:48See, so my first job was actually working there back in 2020.
04:52So we opened up right before COVID kind of happened.
04:56And so we didn't really know.
04:58Yeah, no, literally, we didn't know that was going to happen.
05:00So then I was working there for a little bit.
05:03And then after that, they kind of transitioned to straight catering.
05:05And then they just reopened the location back in Austin.
05:08And the entire family was cowboys growing up?
05:10Yeah, so I, yeah, we were cowboys fans growing up this entire time.
05:16Shoot, seeing Dez Bryant, Tony Romo, those guys, I mean, shoot.
05:20Getting to go to, actually, when I was younger, I got the opportunity to play there.
05:25You know, they held us like the little kids, like the little state championship type games.
05:28So got to play there as a kid.
05:30They got the little pictures, all that fun stuff.
05:32So, you know, you mentioned that, and we're talking with Josh Cameron, Baylor receiver.
05:35You mentioned that people are always surprised, like, wow, five years at Baylor, you stayed at the same place.
05:39Why?
05:40Because, I mean, in this area, there's so many people who do want to shift around, whether it be for
05:44opportunity or NIL or whatever reason is there.
05:47Why did you stay at Baylor for five years?
05:49Yeah, for me, it was really just one of my core values is loyalty.
05:53And so really just looking at the opportunity that Coach Aranda and just the staff has given me just throughout
05:59the years,
05:59because I started off as a walk on there and just kind of worked my way up and really just
06:03wanted to finish my legacy there.
06:04That was kind of, like, the main thing.
06:06I built something there, and I really just wanted to finish it there.
06:10And so there was definitely schools, like, kind of knocking at the door, but there was never, like, really a
06:16doubt of me going, like,
06:17ah, maybe I should consider this.
06:19It was always, like, Baylor in my heart for sure.
06:20It always feels like there's a – every year we get, like, a new Dave Aranda story that's just, like,
06:25wild.
06:26What's your most intense experience with Coach Aranda?
06:29Most intense experience?
06:32Um, probably – I probably had to say at the bowl game in 2022.
06:38That's probably, like, the maddest I've seen him been.
06:41It was just wild stuff.
06:43Kind of like before – we almost got kicked out of the bowl game, actually.
06:45It was crazy.
06:46Because, like, one of our teammates was, like, fighting at the little comedy event.
06:50Like, things was just happening.
06:52And so he just came in.
06:53He was just, like, just straight up getting after us in the TV.
06:56And so I've never really seen, like, Coach Aranda be like that.
06:59And he was just straight cussing us out.
07:00And so I was like, oh, shoot.
07:01Like, that wasn't I playing.
07:03Like, but, yeah, we almost got kicked out of the event.
07:05So that was probably the craziest moment I've seen from here for sure.
07:08But most of the time, you know what I'm saying, what you see, like, that's how he is.
07:11That chill, mellow type coach.
07:14But, you know, he's analyzing everything.
07:16Super smart dude for sure.
07:18I want you to take us through, if you can.
07:20And you don't have to name names or anything.
07:21But, like, you know, we always – we see these guys hop in the portal.
07:25And then all of a sudden they're signed.
07:26The portal hasn't even opened yet.
07:27They've already committed.
07:28Like, what is the process of, like, teams reaching – they're obviously reaching out behind the back.
07:33They got – did you get an agent the whole time you were there?
07:35Oh, I didn't have an agent.
07:36Yeah.
07:37So, like, how does that work?
07:38Like, they're just tampering, just completely in plain sight?
07:42Yeah, that's the thing.
07:43I feel like tampering is not really a thing anymore because it's just – just because of NIL, just being
07:49honest.
07:49But how it went with me, they would go to my trainer back home in Austin.
07:56They would go through him.
07:57And so they were basically talking to him and then he would relay the message to me.
08:00So that's kind of how they were contacting me.
08:02So I just – it really just depends on the situation.
08:06But I guess it just kind of – they're either talking to an agent if you have an agent or
08:10talking to, like, a family friend, like, someone, like, they know type deal that can, like, get in contact with
08:15you.
08:16So, like, not in plain sight but basically, like, in plain sight for sure.
08:20It's definitely – it's definitely pretty wild for sure.
08:23You know, we hear a lot during these pre-draft interviews.
08:25Teams, they want to maybe push your buttons.
08:28They want to stress you a little bit.
08:29See, like, all right, let's see how you react to this.
08:31How have you – have you experienced any sit-downs with teams where it's like, okay, what are they doing
08:35here?
08:36They're clearly trying to lead on me or poke me a little bit and see how I react to this.
08:41Like I said, I really haven't had any moments where, like, they're trying to poke me or prod me or
08:46anything.
08:47Maybe just, like, question me or something like that, some basic questions.
08:51But for the most part, it's been pretty smooth, and if they do, I may not have noticed it.
08:56And I'm just kind of being me and just talking with them for sure.
09:00Josh Cameron, Baylor wide receiver in studio here on Sean and RJ 105 through the fans.
09:04So how are you trying to plan out where you're going to go in terms of your expectation, draft party
09:11plans, getting the family together?
09:13How are you trying to forecast it?
09:15Yeah, so I have such an awesome family, and so they help me a lot with that process.
09:19So they actually kind of already planned it for me.
09:22So we're going to be down in Austin.
09:23So the plan is to have, like, a smaller party, kind of draft party, and then wherever I really kind
09:29of end up, we'll have, like, a bigger kind of celebration.
09:31And they haven't told me the details, but they were like, yeah, we're going to have a celebration somewhere in
09:36Austin.
09:37But all I know is we're going to have, like, a little smaller party and then a bigger celebration down
09:41in Austin.
09:41And you have the family, like, cell phone plan worked out in terms of everyone being quiet, or it's going
09:49to be on you, or you've got the ringer up, you've got a special ring.
09:53How are you planning out the cell phone operations?
09:55Because there's been missed calls.
09:57There's been missed calls.
09:58Do you even know how to turn your ringer on?
10:00Oh, yeah.
10:01No, for sure.
10:02My kids, no sound comes out of the phone.
10:05Yeah, I do usually leave it on silent, but I'm going to have it on for that process.
10:09But I guess if we haven't gotten that far, maybe, I'm going to be honest.
10:14But my mom was talking about, like, maybe put it on speakerphone, things like that, with, like, the coaches and
10:21all that, just so I can thank, like, the whole staff type deals.
10:23Talk about some of your other teammates who could be drafted.
10:26Give us a little scouting report on who comes to mind and some of the best corners that you also
10:31face throughout your Baylor career.
10:33Yeah, so I'd go with my boy Sawyer, my QB.
10:37He's a dude that is just a relentless leader, someone who loves to compete day near as much as I
10:44do.
10:44I've never seen a person as competitive.
10:46It could be tossing a paper in a trash can, and he's going to go hard type deal.
10:51And so, yeah, really just a poised dude, someone who just kind of worked his way up, and someone who
10:55I could definitely see getting drafted.
10:58You've got my tight end, Michael Trigg, too, just a freak athlete,
11:01someone who makes crazy catches, someone who can block, who can really just do it all,
11:06and who can really just make an impact wherever he goes.
11:09So those are just some of the guys I can name.
11:11Sorry, what was the second part?
11:13Bad two-part question on my end.
11:15It's bad journalism.
11:17Some of the corners that you face throughout your career,
11:19and who stands out with some of these names that we're going to hear called?
11:23The best corner I've probably faced in my career is he went to K-State.
11:28Julius Brents, I believe is his name.
11:30I think he's at the Colts now.
11:32But, yeah, he was like a – I was like younger at the time.
11:34He was like a senior, and so I was just like didn't have much experience at the time.
11:38And so, really, he's just like a long, like 6'4 corner, long arms, things like that.
11:43And so just kind of getting used to that was an experience for sure.
11:47You know, it was reported out there, and we're talking with Josh Cameron,
11:50Baylor wide receiver.
11:51It was reported out there you had dinner with the Cowboys,
11:53you and a couple of your teammates.
11:55You obviously have trained right near the star, grew up a Cowboys fan.
11:58I think even your agency that you're with, I think the office out of the star.
12:02And so a lot of strong connections there.
12:05Have you thought about, man, it would be pretty cool to end up here with the Cowboys?
12:08Man, that would be a dream come true for sure.
12:11It would definitely be a super emotional moment.
12:14It's something that I've definitely kind of, like I said,
12:16literally have dreamed about just kind of growing up.
12:19And really just ever since I could remember playing football,
12:21it's always been I want to take care of my mom.
12:25I want to get drafted by the Cowboys.
12:27I want to leave an impact to the franchise for sure.
12:31So, yeah, if that were to happen, man, I would be ecstatic for sure.
12:35Who was at the dinner with you?
12:36Coach Wells.
12:37Okay.
12:38Yeah, tight end coach.
12:38So that's our buddy.
12:39Friend of the show.
12:40Coach Lunda Wells.
12:41Did you have to, did you go in knowing that you were going to, what you were going to order,
12:45if you were going to be safe?
12:46Like, I can't get any fried food.
12:48I got to get a chicken breast or could you just go with a steak?
12:51Yeah, I went with a steak.
12:52And so it was actually me, it was me, Trigg, and Sawyer at that dinner.
12:57And so I actually haven't been to this.
12:59It was like a steakhouse in like a hotel, but it was a really nice steakhouse.
13:02But it was really good.
13:04So I did a little ribeye.
13:06Okay.
13:06How did you get it cooked?
13:07Mashed potatoes, a medium rare.
13:09Come on now, come on now.
13:10Yeah, we ain't doing nothing of that well done stuff.
13:12We can't do that.
13:13I ain't trying to chew on the tire now.
13:16But yeah.
13:17What was your academic focus out of curiosity?
13:20Like, after football, what does Josh Cameron want to do or interested in?
13:25So I graduated back in May, corporate comm degree.
13:30So really when it comes to after football, I know I want to own my own business one day.
13:34My parents, like I said, they're entrepreneurs.
13:36They've owned, like, interns businesses.
13:38They've been in the barbecue business.
13:40They've touched, like, a lot of different areas.
13:42And so for me, the next step is just kind of figure out which area I'm, like, truly passionate in
13:47and really want to kind of pursue and just trying to grow.
13:49So that's just kind of like the next step for me.
13:51But definitely want to be my own business owner.
13:53Well, you're a very impressive young man.
13:55We can already tell it 20 minutes in.
13:57Thank you so much for coming in.
13:58Is there anything else that Cowboy fans or just football fans should know about you before the big draft?
14:04Shoot.
14:05Just look out for the name Josh Cameron, and I'm going to make an impact for sure.
14:08Thank you, boss.
14:09Appreciate you.
14:10And best of luck.
14:11Josh Cameron in studio.
