In a major breakthrough, police from Sector-126 in Noida have busted a gang involved in cheating and theft by targeting victims through online dating platforms. Two accused, including a woman, have been arrested and stolen jewellery along with cash has been recovered.

The case came to light after a complaint was filed by a youth, who said he connected with a woman identifying herself as “Tanu Verma” on a dating app. After initial conversations, she invited him to meet at the Supernova Spira.

During the meeting, the accused allegedly made the victim consume excessive alcohol, leaving him heavily intoxicated. Taking advantage of his condition, she fled with his valuables, including a gold chain, ring, bracelet, and around ₹27,000 in cash.

Acting on the complaint, police registered a case and launched an investigation. Based on local intelligence and informer inputs, the accused were apprehended near the Sector-94 underpass.

The arrested have been identified as Sita Chakravarti, who used aliases Tanu Verma and Maya, and her accomplice Sagar Chauhan.

During interrogation, the woman confessed that she used dating apps and social media to target single men. After gaining their trust, she would arrange meetings, intoxicate them, and steal their belongings. Her associate allegedly sold the stolen jewellery in the market, and the proceeds were shared between them.

Police recovered a gold chain, a gold ring, and ₹13,000 in cash from their possession.

A case has been registered under relevant sections, and further investigation is underway. Authorities have also issued an advisory urging citizens to remain cautious while interacting with strangers on dating apps and to take safety precautions before meeting in person.
