00:01We did go through quite a few dogs.
00:03We found you a match.
00:07She certainly ticks the fun box.
00:10It isn't just one chihuahua.
00:12It's a trio.
00:14Oh, my God!
00:15She's five months old.
00:17Oi, oi, oi.
00:19It's a Jack Russell.
00:20And his name is Mushy.
00:24In a quiet corner of the English countryside,
00:28there's a place for those looking for love.
00:31There is only one chance at life.
00:34And I'm missing the dog.
00:35Good girl.
00:36Here, a dedicated team match abandoned dogs.
00:39You've been through a rough time, haven't you?
00:41It's okay, buddy.
00:42With hopeful new owners.
00:44We could trot together.
00:46Let's trot!
00:47A lot of people come to us when they're at a crossroads.
00:50I lost five years of my memory
00:53and I don't think they will ever come back.
00:55And they're putting their trust in us.
01:01Last spring, we installed fixed rig cameras.
01:05Additional support staff.
01:07You don't have any golden retrievers?
01:09We have 20.
01:10And a secluded meeting pen.
01:12Oh, nice.
01:13It's a lot in here.
01:14To see how lives could be changed forever
01:17with the perfect match.
01:18Oh, my God!
01:20Oh!
01:22Oh!
01:22You've given him the zoomies.
01:23Some connections happen in a heartbeat.
01:27Hello, we're here.
01:29Are you trying to walk?
01:30Yeah.
01:30Are you trying to walk?
01:32But for some, it can take time.
01:37When people connect with a dog,
01:38you're very sexy.
01:40It's not through looks or a type.
01:42It's through a feeling.
01:44Oh!
01:45That first time,
01:47the tip of the tail wags.
01:48You just get a little flutter of hope.
01:51I love them.
01:52You know they're a keeper.
02:04Good evening, Wood Green Security.
02:06Hello, security.
02:08It's Becky from St Nitt's Animal Search and Rescue.
02:10I'm just letting you know,
02:11our team are currently on our way to you.
02:13With them, Illinois,
02:14we've successfully managed to trap this evening.
02:17It's the middle of the night at Wood Green.
02:19But new arrivals can come in at any time.
02:23Shane to Chris.
02:25Just to make you aware,
02:26we have a stray on route media
02:27in around 15 minutes.
02:29Tonight,
02:29they're expecting a Belgian Malinois.
02:34I'll get the paperwork sorted out.
02:38Unfortunately,
02:38the number of Malinois that are going in to rescue
02:41have been increasing dramatically over recent times.
02:47Hey, buddy.
02:48So, what's the story with him?
02:50He has reports of this dog
02:51roaming around Brampton area.
02:53Okay.
02:54Apparently, he's quite aggressive.
02:56And he has growled and moaned a bit,
02:58but obviously...
02:59I mean, it's just nervous.
02:59He's in a cage.
03:00Absolutely.
03:04Because of their protective reputation,
03:08people are getting Belgian Malinois as pets
03:12and encouraging them to do stuff like this.
03:17Yeah.
03:17No worries.
03:18Ready?
03:19And then abandoning them when they realise
03:22just how much work is involved in living with one.
03:25Well done, Chris.
03:26Good boy.
03:27Good boy.
03:28It makes me really uncomfortable
03:30seeing any dog do this,
03:32let alone a Malinois.
03:35All right.
03:35There we go.
03:36All right.
03:37We'll start walking around to the kennel then.
03:39It can be really challenging
03:40to find the right home for a Malinois
03:45because originally bred to guard the sheep at night.
03:49Come on. You're okay.
03:49These dogs don't know how to switch off.
03:53Are you safe?
03:54Yeah, it's okay.
03:55Oh, bless him.
03:56He's shaking.
03:56He's just scared.
03:57Yeah, he's so scared.
04:06Good morning, babies.
04:09Morning, Lucy.
04:13Doggy deliveries!
04:16Come on, babs.
04:18Yay!
04:21What are you hoping to see the doggy do in the pen?
04:24Oh, it's got to be the butt wiggles, right?
04:27That would be...
04:27That would be great.
04:29Lauren and Lewis from Gloucester...
04:31Are you ready for this?
04:32Oh, God.
04:34...already have the perfect dog in mind.
04:36If there is a bum wiggle, I think I'm really gonna...
04:39It's game over.
04:40Yeah, it's game over.
04:41So, I'm assuming you two were a couple?
04:43Yes.
04:43Yes, we are.
04:44So, where did you guys meet?
04:45We met at the co-op.
04:48Oh!
04:48Yeah.
04:49I was working at the co-op.
04:51Yeah.
04:51I was the customer.
04:52He was the customer.
04:53Lauren used to work as one of the checkout girls, didn't you?
04:56There was a bit of flirting for a good few months.
05:00In and out.
05:01I thought...
05:01Yeah, no.
05:02I thought, is he ever gonna do it?
05:03He walks in and I basically just said, do you want my number?
05:07Luckily he said yes.
05:09I wrote it down on the receipt.
05:11Yeah, and she was shaking, handing it over.
05:14The £5 meal deal.
05:16I got an extra.
05:20Good boy.
05:21You gonna have a little sniff?
05:23Come here, then.
05:25What have you seen?
05:27Cool.
05:27You're quite strong on the lead.
05:29After reading his microchip, the staff have learned the stray Malinois is a four-year-old
05:34named Balut, but they've been unable to trace his owner.
05:37Can you sit?
05:40Ah, sitting's boring, right?
05:42Wood Green's Malinois expert, Lindsay, is assessing his behaviour.
05:46What have you spotted?
05:48Is there a dog there?
05:49Oh, no.
05:50So he's got a bit more agitated because somebody's just walked past with a dog quite far away.
05:55And he's wagging his tail.
05:56So people might think that he wants to be friendly, but it isn't always.
05:59He's highly alert.
06:01It's gone.
06:02Dog's gone.
06:04Oh, you're very tight in your body.
06:06His body's gone all stiff.
06:08This is not a pet dog.
06:09This is a lifestyle.
06:10You've got to be, like, one step ahead of their clever brain.
06:13If you don't give them stuff to think about, they will go self-employed and find their own
06:17entertainment.
06:19Balut.
06:20Hey.
06:21What I want to see for Balut is that he can focus on me if I ask him to.
06:27Balut.
06:29He's just not even...
06:30He's, like, flashing me a look and then going straight back to what he was doing.
06:35I think the main challenge is finding somebody who really understands the breed and can also
06:41work with who they are.
06:43I want him to find his forever home as soon as we can, but it needs to be the right
06:47home.
06:50We've just bought our new house and we've just finished renovating the garden.
06:54So it's all ready for a dog.
06:55Nice.
06:56It's dog-proof.
06:57Brilliant.
06:57Yeah.
06:58So you've decided to rescue as opposed to go out and buy a puppy.
07:02Due to some things happening, you know, in my past, I always had that in the back of
07:07my mind that I would always want to rescue someone and give that dog the second chance
07:11that I was sort of given and, you know, and help it to get to a place in life where
07:16they're
07:16happy like I am now.
07:17Yeah.
07:18So we thought that rescuing could be the right route for us, basically.
07:23That's a lovely way of looking at it.
07:24Yeah.
07:25Yeah.
07:26Have I got to consider any kids or anything like that?
07:30No.
07:31Your mum does have a dog.
07:33My mum and dad do have a cockapoo.
07:35Do you have favourite breed types in mind or is there...?
07:39Quite, like, the active type breeds, don't you?
07:41Yeah, Labradors.
07:42Like, my boss has Labradors.
07:43So, you know, I'm...
07:44I think Staffies as well.
07:46OK.
07:47OK.
07:48I think I've got my list.
07:50Same.
07:51Ooh.
07:52Same.
07:52Exciting.
07:53All right, then.
07:54We'll be back.
07:55Thank you very much, guys.
07:57Cheers.
07:58Oh, God.
07:59And now we wait.
08:01We've just met the most funny couple.
08:04Lewis and Lauren.
08:06OK.
08:06And they just smile all the time.
08:08It's got to be a...
08:09It's going to be a Staffies.
08:11Do you think?
08:13They like things like Labradors.
08:15OK.
08:16They also really like Staffies.
08:20Yay!
08:22As long as it's cute...
08:24Yeah.
08:24..you say it was pretty much all.
08:26Yeah.
08:26There can be only one.
08:28Moose.
08:29Yeah!
08:30How old do you think it's going to be?
08:36A year and a half.
08:40Hello.
08:42Hello.
08:46So, I've found you a boy whose name is Moose.
08:51Moose.
08:52Oh, Moose.
08:52I like it.
08:53I like that.
08:54Moose.
08:55OK.
08:56It's a Staffie.
08:57Oh!
08:58And he's just always got a smile on his face.
09:01That sounds like the perfect doll.
09:03That sounds...
09:03He has been waiting a while.
09:05Has he?
09:06Oh!
09:07So, it might be one little bit of a compromise.
09:10He's seven.
09:12That's not a problem.
09:13This sounds good.
09:14We need to go meet Moose.
09:16LAUGHTER
09:18Missy, you've got to be on your best behaviour today.
09:21Yeah!
09:23WHOOP WHOOP WHOOP WHOOP WHOOP
09:26Shireen and Mark from Rotherham...
09:28Are we going to get you a pal?
09:29..are hoping to find a sibling for their four-year-old shepherd cross, Missy.
09:34Hello, Missy.
09:36Come on.
09:37Hiya.
09:37You all right?
09:37Hello.
09:38You all right?
09:39Who is this?
09:40This is Missy.
09:41Missy.
09:42Missy's a rescue dog.
09:44We've had her for nearly two and a half years now, is it Mark?
09:47We entered her into a competition at the dog show last year, didn't we?
09:51Yeah.
09:51She won fifth best rescue dog.
09:54Yeah, she did.
09:55So, what's Missy like?
09:57She loves a Sunday dinner.
09:58Sunday dinner?
09:58Yeah, of course.
09:59What does she have on a roast?
10:01Everything that we have.
10:01She's a spoiled dog, then.
10:03She is very spoiled, yeah.
10:04Is she?
10:04Really spoiled.
10:05Do you think she wants, like, a pal?
10:08Uh-huh.
10:08Or, like, a fella?
10:10Oh, you like that.
10:11She's not having a fella.
10:12She's not having a fella.
10:13Oh, come on.
10:14She's a friend.
10:15Detective Dad, no.
10:17Honestly, that's what he's like.
10:19Send her off to a convent.
10:22If you would like to make yourselves comfortable just on these chairs here behind me.
10:27Trying to find your boyfriend, Missy.
10:34This is the day we've been waiting for.
10:37I can't believe it.
10:39I'm so excited.
10:41To go down the route of rehoming a rescue dog, it just felt right, given everything that Lewis has been
10:49through.
10:52God.
10:54Due to a complicated family relationship, I've left the family home at 16.
11:02We just have to try and be as calm as we can.
11:06And then I went through a period in my life where I was actually homeless myself and was sort of
11:14living and sleeping rough.
11:17Come on, Missy.
11:23I remember the first night on the streets.
11:27I was out with my friends and then everybody went home.
11:31And then it was at that point where I was like, where do I go now?
11:38I remember just thinking, I'm freezing cold and I just have to try and like, get through the night.
11:48It's really not nice to think about that.
11:56And breathe.
12:02It's really difficult to hear someone that you care about having to experience that.
12:09But it's a credit to you, really, to how far you've come.
12:13It sounds like he's been here a little while, bless him.
12:18I was probably about 20, I would say.
12:22And I was able to get a room share.
12:25Does this feel real?
12:27It does not feel real.
12:29So I was able to start the process of trying to get back on my feet.
12:34Oh!
12:39Now, everything that I have, I don't take for granted at all.
12:43Good boy.
12:44Are you coming?
12:46I feel like I almost went through a similar sort of path as to what potentially some of these dogs
12:52have gone through.
12:53And that's why I really want to be able to give a rescue dog a second home, a second chance,
13:00a whole new life.
13:01Good boy.
13:03Ready?
13:06Oh my God.
13:08He's coming.
13:08Are you ready?
13:13Oh, Moose.
13:14I'm Rochelle and this is Moose.
13:16Hello.
13:17He's brought you his favourite toy of the present.
13:20That is a great present.
13:22Hello, Moose.
13:23Oh, look at those butt wiggles.
13:25Good boy, Moose.
13:27Butt wiggles.
13:28Butt wiggles.
13:28Butt wiggles.
13:28They wanted the butt wiggles.
13:32Moose.
13:33Oh!
13:34Hello, mate.
13:35What have you got there?
13:36What have you got there?
13:38Oh, yes.
13:39You're a beautiful boy, aren't you?
13:40Oh, my goodness.
13:40What have you got?
13:41Oh, you're like a tug of war.
13:43Like a tug of war.
13:44Oh, he's a big boy.
13:45He's a big boy.
13:46Oh, yes.
13:47I don't think he's going to win that one.
13:48Sit.
13:49Oh, gentle.
13:51Oh, good boy.
13:52Good boy.
13:53Oh, yes.
13:54Oh, you are beautiful, aren't you, Moose?
13:57Oh, yes.
13:58You just want to say hello.
13:59Oh, I know.
13:59I know you want the kisses.
14:01Oh, yes.
14:01I know.
14:02Oh, I know.
14:03He's just such a friendly, happy boy.
14:06He is.
14:07And that's what I mean.
14:08They're a really friendly, happy couple.
14:11And they're just straight away.
14:13They look like a family.
14:16Moose, what's this?
14:17Come.
14:18Sit.
14:19Poor.
14:20Gentle.
14:21Good boy.
14:22Good boy.
14:23Yes, yes, yes.
14:25Oh, my gosh, he's so cute.
14:29Moose, I think he's perfect.
14:31Biggest changes, obviously, when I met Lauren, that's when I sort of landed on my feet.
14:36Oh, it says true love on his little waistcoat.
14:40Well, that's exactly what it is, isn't it?
14:42Seeing how you were with your family.
14:46There you go.
14:48There's a good boy.
14:49Where everyone's supporting each other.
14:51He's loving it, isn't he?
14:52Are you loving it?
14:53It was a lot different to what I was coming from then and what I was used to.
14:59I love him.
15:00How could you not?
15:02And I can only be grateful for the position I'm in now.
15:06What do you reckon, mate?
15:08Do you want to come home?
15:09Do you want to come home with us?
15:10Oh!
15:14Who's that?
15:15Hello, mister.
15:16Hello.
15:19How's it been?
15:20It's been so good.
15:22Great.
15:22Yeah!
15:23Yeah!
15:24The only thing that's niggling away at the back of my mind is when Moose had a pen meet before,
15:31he smashed it then as well.
15:34Perfect.
15:35Perfect.
15:36And we were so sure that it was a done deal and then they phoned us the next day and
15:41said no.
15:44Come here, good boy!
15:46Yeah!
15:47What a good lad!
15:49You got your ball?
15:51While he's yet to meet any potential new owners...
15:54Balut!
15:55Come here!
15:56Yes!
15:56Good lad!
15:57What an excellent recall!
15:59Malinois Balut's behaviour towards people and other dogs has been steadily improving.
16:05Good lad.
16:06Down.
16:06Good boy!
16:08Can you do a middle?
16:10Yes!
16:11What a good boy!
16:13When you get to know Balut and you've got a little bit of a relationship with him, he's absolutely a
16:18lovely boy.
16:19He will come and sit and he'll really press himself into your leg for some affection and we've seen that
16:25softer side of him.
16:26But we are very aware that that can switch really quickly and very quickly he's working Balut again.
16:33Hey!
16:37Yeah, we might have to call it a day now and get him back.
16:40Yeah.
16:42Who's this?
16:43This is Missy!
16:44And you're here for one reason.
16:47Yes.
16:48Find Missy a friend.
16:49No!
16:49Find Missy a friend.
16:51So how's she telling you that she wants a friend?
16:53We take her to dog training every Saturday and if there's other playful dogs there, she just gets so excited.
16:59You can see how happy she is when she's running around with them.
17:03OK.
17:03And also Missy's very, very needy.
17:07This is what I mean by needy.
17:09Yeah.
17:10She has to be with you all the time but like next to you or on top of you.
17:15Yeah, yeah.
17:15Oh, lovely!
17:16Oh, forgive me!
17:20But I don't know, I sometimes feel like that's a bit of like an anxiety thing and I think if
17:24she just had another dog she maybe wouldn't be as needy.
17:27Mm-mm.
17:27She's sporting a rather nice jacket yesterday.
17:31Missy had boiling hot water poured over her before we had her.
17:34Oh!
17:35Oh, glorious!
17:36Yeah.
17:36So she's got a big, bald patch on her back that we have to make sure is protected all the
17:41time.
17:41Oh, my God!
17:42Maybe.
17:42We're still healing the scar when we first visited her.
17:46Yeah.
17:46It's just shocking, isn't it?
17:47It's shocking how people can treat animals.
17:50She'd been in rescue for over a year and we were told that she didn't get much interest because of
17:56the patch on her back.
17:57OK, that's lovely that you could see beyond.
17:59Yeah, yeah.
18:00So have you had other dogs before?
18:03Together we had a dog called Rambo who was a rescue dog.
18:06Yeah.
18:06We had Rambo for about 14 years.
18:08OK.
18:08He was a...
18:09Alsatian.
18:09Yeah.
18:10Oh, right, OK.
18:10He had a lot of behavioural issues.
18:12They were absolutely amazing with family and in-house.
18:14But outside of the house it was really hard, wasn't it?
18:18Yeah.
18:18Are you out looking for a challenge when it comes to dog ownership?
18:20If you make a connection with dog, it's...
18:22Yeah.
18:22That's it.
18:23We're absolutely open to behavioural issues.
18:26And we had behavioural issues when we first got Missy.
18:28We had behavioural issues when we had our Rambo.
18:31And training them's a...
18:33It gives you something at the end of it.
18:34Yeah.
18:34And it gives the dog something at the end of it.
18:36A lot of the time they're behaving like that for a reason and you've just got to try and figure
18:40that reason out.
18:41And have you thought of the type of dog or age ranges, that kind of thing?
18:47I personally don't have a preference in age.
18:49I have a preference in age.
18:50Mmm.
18:51Oh!
18:52I had a golden retriever.
18:54Oh, yeah.
18:55We bought a brand new kitchen table and chairs.
18:58Oh, no.
18:59And he basically chewed all legs off.
19:02Eventually he did grow out of it, but it took about a year and a half.
19:05Yeah.
19:06I don't want a younger dog.
19:08I've had them before.
19:10They chew everything.
19:11It's just a nightmare.
19:13Mark and Shireen have a dog called Missy.
19:19Maybe a bit of Dutch Shepherdinger, that kind of thing.
19:22We don't often get people come here that have got Shepard experience.
19:28Mm-mm.
19:28And we've been struggling to come up with anybody vaguely suitable for Baloo.
19:38Is he the Malinois?
19:40Yeah.
19:41But it sounds like they are great dog owners in terms of they're willing to give the more challenging dogs
19:49a go.
19:52The other one I'm thinking is Buffy.
19:56And is she a German Shepherd?
19:58Yeah.
19:58OK.
19:59She came in because the owners couldn't afford to keep her, so they were really struggling with the medical.
20:03Aw.
20:04But it's all been resolved now.
20:08She's like the polar opposite to Baloo, isn't she?
20:11How old Buffy?
20:12Is she five months now?
20:14Oh!
20:16So she's got to be right, hasn't it?
20:19Yeah.
20:22OK.
20:22So, taking everything into consideration, we've got a lad.
20:30He...
20:32Did you say you didn't want another male or something?
20:35I have a male.
20:36Oh, that doesn't sound very convincing, does it?
20:39Oh, anyway.
20:40He's been a protective dad.
20:42His name is Baloo.
20:43He was found as a stray.
20:44Yep.
20:45He'd got a foreign chip, so that's how we know that he's four years old and his name is Baloo.
20:49OK.
20:50He's a Belgian Malinois.
20:52Oh.
20:52A member of the shepherding family.
20:55OK, yep.
20:55And this must be worked.
20:57Yep, definitely.
20:58Otherwise, they get themselves into difficulties.
21:01So, I think it's something that I'd like to expose you to.
21:06Because we don't often have people of your calibre come through the door that would be suitable for a dog
21:11like this.
21:12What are your thoughts?
21:13Yeah.
21:14I'm excited to meet him.
21:15Yeah.
21:16OK, so we want you guys to meet him first.
21:19OK.
21:19So, if you want to head off with Dad.
21:22Yeah.
21:22And then we'll introduce Missy and Baloo later.
21:25OK.
21:26Oh, my God.
21:29Good girl.
21:34Oh.
21:36Come on, Nick.
21:41So, we have Gaynor, Buster and...?
21:46And Dave.
21:46Dave.
21:47Hello.
21:49Due to having motor neurone disease, Dave is unable to travel.
21:54Nice to meet you. I'm Lizzie.
21:56So Lizzie's meeting him, his wife and their son online.
22:01I know it's obviously really tricky for you to get here,
22:04so we really appreciate that you've taken the time to do this for us.
22:11I love my job.
22:12I love the connection and the relationships you build with people.
22:20Have you discussed dogs? What sort of dog you like?
22:25Cocker Spaniels. Dave?
22:28Any dogs?
22:30I love that we are making people's lives better.
22:35We are enhancing their lives, hopefully, with a new companion.
22:39I'd like a dog to be company for Gaynor
22:43and to get her out for a nice dog walk for now and when I'm gone.
22:50We just thought now's the right time
22:53because obviously we don't know how much longer he's got.
22:57And Dave just doesn't want me to be on my own.
23:00Me and Gaynor did a lot and had a social life.
23:05Life was amazing and very fulfilled.
23:09This was our very first holiday.
23:12Dad wore speedos before budget smugglers were even a thing.
23:18We used to like to go to festivals
23:20and we went to Glastonbury a few years.
23:25They love a fancy dress event.
23:28The best one is when I'll dress up as the track queen.
23:34Just enjoyed having fun and having a good time.
23:39What about you, Buster?
23:41Do you have a preference for mum and dad?
23:43I think I need, like, a tactile dog.
23:46Yeah.
23:47Nothing too big.
23:47That needs loads of walking, I think.
23:50Yeah.
23:51Nothing too crazy.
23:52Our Cocker Spaniel passed away 11 years old a year ago
23:57and he used to sleep with us, you see,
24:00so Dave would like the dog to cuddle on the bed with.
24:04Of course, yeah.
24:06Yeah, that's what he misses.
24:08We'll see what we can do.
24:14Hi!
24:15Hello!
24:17This is Missy.
24:19Remember the first time we met Missy?
24:22Yeah.
24:22And, like, she was just coming in,
24:23she was, like, literally all over you straight away, wasn't she?
24:26Mm-hm.
24:29I know, girl, don't worry.
24:31I'm wondering where Dad has gone.
24:33Hello!
24:37About the same age as Missy.
24:39Yeah, four.
24:40Trust me, four.
24:42Our previous rescue dog, Rambo,
24:44because he was so reactive,
24:46a lot of...
24:47Difficult.
24:48Yeah, a lot of dogs like that won't be rescued.
24:51Good boy.
24:52Yeah, what a good boy you are.
24:55I'm excited to see her, Malin was.
24:57I like Malin was.
24:59And they need someone like us to take them.
25:01I wonder what Missy's gonna think.
25:04What if it's...
25:05If it's bouncy, I think she'll love her.
25:08It's lovely walking.
25:10I'm gonna do a sniff.
25:11As long as it's the right dog for Missy,
25:14we're up for a challenge, haven't we?
25:16Yeah.
25:17What a good boy.
25:21We're gonna meet some lovely people.
25:23Oh, he's a handsome boy.
25:25He is a handsome boy.
25:26He is.
25:28Getting a bit stressed.
25:29It won't be long.
25:30And then we'll see if he's gonna be the man of your dreams.
25:34Your face when you said a boy dog.
25:37Daddy says I'm not allowed to boyfriends.
25:39Yeah, not allowed to boyfriend.
25:41You've only got these steps.
25:43Make sure you do a good behaviour.
25:45Here we go.
25:46You are a very good boy.
25:52Hiya.
25:52That's it.
25:53Hello.
25:55This is Balut.
25:57Hello, Balut.
25:57That's our lovely Mally.
25:59Hi, Balut.
26:00Hello.
26:01Let him come over in his own time.
26:03He's okay.
26:03He looks like he's a bit timid, isn't he?
26:05When I first saw Balut, I thought he would be a one.
26:07Is he a nervous dog, is he?
26:09He's not generally.
26:10He has got a sensitive side, which we do sometimes see with these guys.
26:14Right, yeah.
26:15But yeah, it's a big day, isn't it?
26:17Are you not bothered about the days?
26:18I don't want to.
26:20Yeah.
26:20Okay, we'll go over here for a bit.
26:22Oh, he's really timid.
26:23Yes.
26:24At first, he seemed a bit offish and a bit...
26:26But more than me, I think.
26:28Yeah, maybe.
26:28I don't know if it might have a man thing.
26:30What do you think?
26:31Oh, you looked very impressed.
26:33Oh, he's really timid.
26:33I'm really surprised.
26:35I am.
26:35Hello.
26:36Go here.
26:36But then I got down to his level thinking he'd calm down a bit.
26:41That's okay.
26:42Okay.
26:43Okay.
26:44Okay.
26:45It's okay.
26:47And he didn't do that.
26:49No, but I think it's just fear with him.
26:51Yeah.
26:52You're looking worried, Sue.
26:55Hmm.
26:56That's his breed, isn't it?
26:57That's what they do when they're worried.
27:01So, yeah, I honestly thought that the barrier would be introducing him to your dog because
27:05his behaviour in kennels is his behaviour in kennels is...
27:08Okay.
27:09So, what I might do is take him out, and then we'll get somebody to come back in and have
27:15a chat with you.
27:15Oh, no.
27:19Oh, no.
27:19Come on, trouble.
27:20Oh, dear.
27:23It's just a shame.
27:24It's a real shame for him.
27:26It's okay.
27:28Because I knew instantly that as soon as he went forward and started barking, and that's
27:32a very aggressive thing, and I knew Shireen would be now, instant.
27:38It's a shame, though, isn't it?
27:39Yeah.
27:39Because you don't know what they've been through.
27:42Oh.
27:46Who's in there?
27:47Hey, who's in there?
27:48Hey, who's in there?
27:49Oh, yeah.
27:51She's like, she took you away from me.
27:54Oh, no.
27:55Is she all right?
27:56Yeah, she's a bit whingy.
27:58Oh, what's she?
27:59Oh.
27:59So I'm back here to say that, again, I don't want to lose your German Shepherd experience.
28:05Okay.
28:06Because we have got a little female.
28:10Right.
28:11Which you appear to be more comfortable with, Mark.
28:15Her name is Buffy.
28:16Is she a German Shepherd?
28:18German Shepherd.
28:19Sable, long coat.
28:22However, she's five months old.
28:24Oh.
28:26Right.
28:27Oh, God.
28:28Really?
28:29Oh, my God.
28:35You can't have it all, Mark.
28:38When she said it was five months old, because it's an Alsatian, I just knew it was going to
28:42be cute as anything.
28:45These people are so lovely.
28:47And you can have a big sister.
28:49I knew Shireen would fall in love with her as soon as it walked through the door.
28:52So then you find her not for a battle.
28:56Okay.
28:56Do you want to come and get her?
28:57Oh, my God.
28:59Oh, dear.
29:00Hello.
29:02Oh, we don't know.
29:06Hey, Buffy.
29:07Do you feel comfortable enough for me to leave you?
29:11Yeah.
29:11Yeah, I think so.
29:12Come here.
29:13She's not getting them off.
29:14Come on, mate.
29:14Come on.
29:15Come here.
29:16Good girl.
29:16No, no, no.
29:19No.
29:21Calm down a bit.
29:22She's just doing that typical puppy.
29:24Play with me.
29:25Play with me.
29:26Hiya.
29:27Sit.
29:28She just wants to fly.
29:29Sit.
29:30Good girl.
29:31Wait.
29:31Wait.
29:32Wait.
29:33Wait.
29:33She's having a bit of a tantrum now.
29:35They need to let her off lead.
29:37Just let her off for a minute, Mark.
29:38Do you reckon?
29:39Yeah.
29:40She's probably getting more frustrated because she's on the lead.
29:42Hello, Buffy.
29:43Hello.
29:43Hello.
29:44Hello.
29:46She is so adorable.
29:54Gently, Missy.
29:56She's getting giddy now, ain't she?
29:58Missy, don't get too giddy.
30:00Oh, Missy seems to be taking all this in her stride.
30:03Yeah, she does.
30:07What's that?
30:07Buffy.
30:08Buffy, come here.
30:09Buffy.
30:10Come on, then.
30:11She's going to need some training, ain't she?
30:13Can we lie down?
30:13Lie down.
30:14So, since I've left, what kind of noises have they been making about what they think of her?
30:20Right, enough nipping.
30:22Do not nip.
30:23One thing he did say is she's going to need a lot of training.
30:30Why don't we have a minute, Buffy?
30:32No, you...
30:34No chance.
30:36It's the reality of living with two very energetic dogs
30:42sinking in.
30:44Are we not going to lie down?
30:46Missy.
30:47Buffy went to lie down, then, as well.
30:52Who's that?
30:52Who's that?
30:53How are you guys feeling?
30:54Oh, my God, she's so adorable.
30:56I thought you would like her.
30:59I personally would absolutely love to take her home with us, but we've got to discuss it,
31:06don't we?
31:06Yeah, definitely.
31:07God, she's strong.
31:09Is she?
31:10Yeah.
31:11Five minutes old is just a lot of work.
31:13This way, Buffy.
31:15Oh, beautiful.
31:17Beautiful singing.
31:18We don't want to make, like, a rash decision.
31:20We know how important it is if you take on a rescue dog.
31:23She's really strong there for her size.
31:25It's got to be a big family decision, hasn't it?
31:28Yeah.
31:29Yeah.
31:31Right, we need to find the perfect dog.
31:35I know we don't do perfect dogs, but this has to be perfect.
31:39OK.
31:40Finally going to meet them.
31:42Just wish Dad was here now.
31:44We'll take some photographs, can't we?
31:47Gaynor loves Cocker Spaniels, and I really want to be able to give them what they really want.
31:54Hiya.
31:55Hi.
31:55The Lawrence family, right?
31:57Yes.
31:57The Lawrence family.
31:58Been expecting you.
32:00So what have we got?
32:02Well, we do have a couple of Cocker Spaniels that have been here a little while.
32:06So we've got Buddy and Rusty.
32:13So, obviously, it's you two and Dave.
32:15Yes.
32:16Dave had a lot of input in this.
32:18Yeah.
32:18An awful lot, yeah.
32:20This dog needs to be comfortable with carers in and out of the home.
32:24It needs to be able to settle on the bed with Dave.
32:29So I think that probably rules out Buddy.
32:33And Rusty.
32:34OK.
32:35If you just want to make yourself comfortable on the chairs at the back there behind me.
32:39Yep.
32:39And some I should be done shortly.
32:41Thank you very much.
32:41Nice to meet you.
32:42No worries.
32:44Have we got any other Spaniels?
32:47We have...
32:47We have Bailey.
32:49Hi, Bailey.
32:51Hi, Bailey.
32:51Are you having a good hour?
32:53Hello.
32:53Are you OK?
32:55Are you having fun?
32:57Bailey is a gorgeous boy.
33:00He's so happy and friendly.
33:02Oh, good spin.
33:04But unfortunately, Bailey's owner's had a change of circumstance.
33:08He's going this way.
33:10They had two dogs, but they were really struggling to walk both of them.
33:16So they made the really difficult decision to re-home one of them, and unfortunately that was Bailey.
33:26It's hard to go from a quiet home with another dog to being on your own.
33:33He's not used to anything, and he's not got his home comfort, so it's really stressful for him.
33:38It can be quite difficult to see a dog who isn't showing their true potential, but in the right home
33:45and environment, he's really going to thrive.
33:48I think Bailey could actually be the perfect dog, and fingers crossed they like him.
33:54My life experiences play a huge part of what I do.
33:58Are you going to be OK going down?
34:01Yeah, I think I need to do this one on my own.
34:05Yeah, I'll be OK.
34:07It makes you good at what you do.
34:12It means that you can help those people in a way that they need to be helped.
34:19Hi, Liz.
34:20Hi.
34:20Hi, how are you?
34:21Nice to meet you in the flesh.
34:23How are you both feeling since our chat?
34:26I'm incredibly nervous.
34:27And excited.
34:28So am I.
34:30This is a really big one for me, actually.
34:33I'm very nervous.
34:34Are you?
34:35Yeah.
34:36So my husband had my own neurone disease.
34:38Oh, dear, did he?
34:44It's hard.
34:45It's very hard.
34:47I'm sorry.
34:48No, don't you, Steve.
34:50God.
34:51You're very brave to do this.
34:54So are you.
34:56Yeah.
34:59So it's really personal for me, this one.
35:03I had, I actually adopted a little dog during the time that he was ill and she saved me, really.
35:14So, yeah, I would love to be able to do the same for you guys.
35:19Lovely that you understand.
35:21Yeah.
35:22If you can relate to someone and relate to their situation, you know what they need.
35:28And so finding them that perfect dog is so much easier.
35:34I have, hopefully, found you a match.
35:40Oh.
35:42Um, so his name is Bailey.
35:46Mm-hmm.
35:47He is a Cocker Spaniel.
35:49Oh.
35:51Um, he's about six years old.
35:54But because he's that age, he's really chilled out.
35:58Yeah, yeah.
35:58We want a dog that...
36:00Exactly, and we want a dog that Dave's going to be able to enjoy as well.
36:06Well, he loves Cocker Spaniels.
36:08Yeah.
36:08He's going to be able to have a...
36:10Oh.
36:11Oh, no.
36:12You all right?
36:13I know, I didn't expect that.
36:14No, God.
36:16She's...
36:17Oh, she definitely will know that...
36:19She will know that this is the right dog.
36:24Oh, my gosh.
36:26I can't believe she, uh...
36:27Oh, I know.
36:28She'll do the same thing.
36:29I mean, somebody yesterday in Sainsbury's was asking me about Dad,
36:34and they didn't even know what MND was.
36:37I don't think a lot of people do to all of us.
36:39No.
36:42We only found out last June.
36:46They took him in to do some tests,
36:49and unfortunately, the diagnosis was MND.
36:53And from June last year till now,
36:56Dave has basically lost the use of everything
36:59apart from his head.
37:01So it has come on very, very, very fast.
37:05It's not very often you meet people, though.
37:09Well...
37:09I don't really...
37:10I don't know.
37:12I've not met anyone who...
37:14There is anyone with it, really.
37:16No.
37:16No.
37:18Being a fast bowler to this is, you know,
37:23quite something, really.
37:26I've got a little highlight reel of Dad's highlights against Sri Lanka.
37:30I was the first black British-born cricket player to be selected for England.
37:37He was always known for a very long run-up.
37:39That was one of his trademarks.
37:43He could bowl in the 90 miles an hour, which is very fast.
37:53His thing was speed, speed and power.
37:57I wasn't lucky enough to ever watch him play professionally,
38:00but he was always my hero growing up.
38:11I wonder if he might come in and jump up on here already.
38:14That would be fun.
38:15If he jumps up and takes Dad's old shit off...
38:21Oh, my gosh.
38:22Oh, my gosh.
38:23Yeah.
38:23That's true.
38:24If he's trying to lick him.
38:27Don't get me wrong, it is dark and hard,
38:31but we still try and have a laugh and have good times
38:34and try and make some memories still.
38:36We don't know when it will be the last,
38:41so we're trying to keep as positive as we can.
38:44Well done.
38:46It's so exciting.
38:48Isn't it?
38:50Oh, he's cute.
38:52He is, isn't he?
38:55Oh!
38:56And something.
38:57Oh, my God.
39:00Dogs take away all the bad days,
39:03all the pain,
39:04and I think that's what they could both do with just some joy
39:08and a dog who doesn't know the situation,
39:12doesn't know what's going on at home,
39:13and he's just happy to see them
39:15and happy to love and happy to play.
39:21Oh, here we go.
39:22Here we go.
39:23Here we go.
39:25Oh, my gosh.
39:28Oh!
39:29Oh!
39:31Hello.
39:32Hi.
39:33Hi.
39:34Come on.
39:34I'm Katie. Nice to meet you.
39:36Nice to meet you.
39:36This is the lovely Bailey.
39:38Hello, Bailey.
39:38What I'll do is I'll let him off and just let him have a sniff.
39:41He might be a bit stressed.
39:42Yeah, of course.
39:43But, yeah, enjoy.
39:45Oh, wow.
39:47Hello.
39:47Oh, you've noticed those people.
39:51Oh, he's beautiful.
39:53Isn't he?
39:53What a lovely colour he is.
39:56Oh!
39:57Oh, Bailey.
39:58Bailey!
39:58Give him a chance.
40:00Oh, darling, don't stop crying.
40:02He's panting quite a lot, isn't he?
40:04Bless him.
40:05He's a bit stressed out.
40:07The whole situation is just quite a lot for him.
40:11Oh.
40:12Oh, sweetheart.
40:16Shall we go and get some treats for him?
40:17Yeah, go over and see him.
40:20Just need some reassurance.
40:24Oh, gosh, he's crying.
40:26They just almost need to put their hands on him
40:28and just give him a really good stroke, don't they?
40:33Bailey.
40:34Hi.
40:36Bailey, would you like a biscuit, darling?
40:40Yeah, what's that?
40:41Oh, there we go.
40:44It's a really good sign that he's taking the treat.
40:46Mm, yeah.
40:48Wow, what's this one?
40:49Oh, it's a rabbit.
40:51Do you like the rabbit?
40:55It's lots of different smells, though, isn't it?
40:59Hello.
41:00Hello.
41:01Hello, boy.
41:03Hello.
41:04Oh, yes.
41:06Oh, boss, that's nice.
41:08Hello.
41:09Hello.
41:10Hello.
41:12Nice to meet you, too.
41:15Hello.
41:17Oh, this is lovely.
41:20Oh, you like cuddles, don't you?
41:23What's this?
41:24Wanna play?
41:26Oh, you just want cuddles.
41:29Oh, but that's good.
41:30That's what we want at home, isn't it?
41:32Oh, see, they're already talking about him in the home.
41:37Hello.
41:38Hello.
41:40Hello.
41:40Hello.
41:41Oh, I say.
41:45Look at Gaynor's face.
41:46I'm so pleased she's smiling.
41:49Is that better?
41:50You are very handsome, aren't you?
41:52Aw.
41:53Perfect size for the bed.
41:56Oh.
41:58You can go and have a good night's sleep now.
42:00Yeah.
42:12What have you got, Missy?
42:15Definitely had me doubts when they said puppy.
42:18I've had puppies before and it was just a lot of work
42:20that I just didn't want.
42:22But we were hoping I weren't going to like it, I think.
42:26We got home, we had a big conversation.
42:29Had her talk to Missy as well.
42:31Yeah.
42:31And we decided that we take her on.
42:35Puffy!
42:40Come on.
42:41Hello.
42:42Hello, good girl.
42:44Puffy, leave that.
42:45Come here.
42:46The first week, if I'm being honest, I was like,
42:48oh my God, what have we done?
42:50Buffy!
42:51Come here.
42:53But things settle down after a couple of weeks.
42:55Come on then, girls.
42:57Come on.
42:58Missy's taken to Buffy really well.
43:03Missy's still needy.
43:05Yeah, she's still needy.
43:06But she's not nearly as needy as she was, was she?
43:09She's happy just to go off with Buffy and have little Missy and Buffy time,
43:13which is really nice to see, isn't it?
43:15Yeah.
43:31My first impressions of Moose were that he was very energetic.
43:36We had a connection with him straight away, but I think you do have to be realistic about what we
43:44could bring to a dog, but also how a dog would fit into our lives.
43:48We decided to...
43:52Moose!
43:53Bring Moose home?
43:55How could we not?
43:56Good boy!
44:01Can I go for a walk?
44:03Being able to rescue a dog has just been very rewarding.
44:09Good boy.
44:11He's now got that second chance to just have a normal life, and that's what it is.
44:16Yeah.
44:17You know, it's nothing special.
44:18It's just having a sleep on the sofa or playing in the garden.
44:23You know, it's just those things that...
44:24Just whatever makes him happy.
44:26Yeah, that any dog should be able to have.
44:34Bailey has been at Wood Green for about a month now, but we found him a new home, so today
44:41we are on a little mission to take him to his new family.
44:46This way, Bailey.
44:49Good boy.
44:54Are you excited?
44:57He's quite intuitive, so I think he is a little bit suspicious at the moment.
45:01Go this way.
45:02Where are we coming?
45:04So, fingers crossed, it all goes well today.
45:12Hello!
45:13Hello!
45:14Hi!
45:15Hello!
45:16Alice!
45:17Oh, you still have...
45:18Oh, how lovely!
45:20Oh, how lovely!
45:22Hello, Bailey, welcome to your little home.
45:26Good boy.
45:28Well, he's made himself at home already.
45:34That's a good boy!
45:36Can you give him a kiss?
45:38Yeah.
45:39Thank you for getting us, Bailey, it will bring a lot of happiness.
45:43You're very welcome.
45:46Good boy, Bailey.
45:48That's what it's all about, isn't it?
45:50Yes.
45:51Aw, good!
46:13Great part.
