00:11I'll be speaking to Dan Priesh and Lawrence, the three unlucky candidates who fell just short of the final.
00:18And to help me unpack how they did, I'm joined by Series 8 winner Ricky Martin and presenter Harriet Rose.

00:46It's official, we have reached the final, almost.
00:50Two finalists, Pasha and Karishma.
00:52For one of them, life is about to change completely.
00:55Lord Sugar, over the course of 20 Series, 3.5 million he's invested, including in yourself.
01:01You went through the process back in 2012, Ricky.
01:04How much is life about to change?
01:06Look, if you look at my example, I was living on the South Coast.
01:10I was a recruiter by day, a wrestler by night.
01:13I now live in and around London.
01:15I run a business that's a 20 million turnover company.
01:17I've run it with him for nearly 15 years.
01:20I've got married, I have kids, I have a family.
01:22And my business puts people into jobs.
01:24We've put over 10,000 people into jobs over that time.
01:26So it's not just my life that's changed.
01:28This role can change the lives of many others thereafter.
01:31And these two are right on the cusp of that.
01:33Harry, it's an all-female final.
01:35Slay.
01:35We love to see it.
01:36We love to see it.
01:37I love that you say slay in real life.
01:38I've never met one of them.
01:39In real life.
01:42How much pressure do you imagine Karishma and Pasha are under right now?
01:48I think these two queens don't feel pressure.
01:51It seems to me that they are both kind of slick ricks.
01:54I can see the confidence seeping out of them and it's beautiful.
01:58Absolutely.
01:58Interview's weak.
01:59They dread it.
02:01The candidates are like, you know, they want to be there, obviously.
02:04Final five.
02:04We can't get enough of it at home.
02:07Four of Lord Sugar's most trusted advisors.
02:09They dig deep, don't they, into these business plans.
02:12Claude, Claudine, Linda and Mike.
02:14Not a group that you'd want to get on the wrong side of, I think it's fair to say.
02:18If you look at the four people interviewing, they're all doing something different.
02:23Claudine's trying to suss out the human in the person.
02:26So what are they going to show?
02:27Mike's trying to suss out, actually, are they savvy enough?
02:29Is this replicatable?
02:31Does it work?
02:31Does it exist?
02:32Claude's hammering you on your numbers and your resilience.
02:35And I'm not even going to go there with Linda.
02:38I'm not going to say what she brings to the...
02:39Linda's just there for our entertainment.

02:40Yes.
02:41We love her.
02:43Linda's like, boom!
02:45Can you deal with that?
02:46OK, let's discuss how our finalists handled those interviews.
02:52Karishma, obviously skincare-infused beauty brand.
02:54She got a couple of tests there from Mike.
02:57It felt like it was the first time we saw nerves, physical nerves.
03:03I guess that's to be expected at this point.
03:06She's at the stage where this is this 11th week of the process.
03:09And this is the week you're finally getting to discuss something that's really important to you.
03:13Your business, your opportunity.
03:14It's actually the time you're most vulnerable and exposed as a candidate.
03:18To see the kind of reason and the personal, you know, the amount she's invested in it.
03:24How important is the why in business, do you think?
03:27I think it's the most important thing.
03:29If you look at any consumer product you buy, nine times out of ten you're buying it because you're bought
03:33into the story.
03:34And this is where I think Karishma did so, so well.
03:37Like, we really saw the human being in her.
03:40Like, hugely saw the human being and beyond.
03:42Dad in the warehouse, like, what she's done to get there, the personal impact when she was 16.
03:48And do you know what?
03:49She wants to get a consumer product to market.
03:50And she's just sold her story to us all for us to try and buy into that future product.
03:56And that drive, you cannot question that.
03:58Pasha, also extremely impressive.
04:01The youngest candidate.
04:02She's so confident, really.
04:04And she obviously has a lot to learn.
04:06But let's talk about the moment where I actually thought, oh, no, this is it.
04:11When Claudine pulled up the LinkedIn picture.
04:14And I thought, oh, no.
04:16Oh, no.
04:17This is not going.
04:18No, no, no.
04:18This is not going at all.
04:21What were you thinking when you, and she got it, you know, it was a physical copy.
04:27Iconic.
04:27The printout of it is Chef's Kiss.
04:30And it's kind of one of those moments in the series where she will live off that memory of how
04:34funny and iconic that is.
04:36But I do think that was a moment where she, again, handled it with grace.
04:40She handled it with decorum.
04:41And she understood and admitted that that was probably not the right vibe.
04:46She shows a kind of edge and a steeliness that I think is so inspired, actually.
04:53And I think she's given it throughout the series.
04:55I've been so impressed with her relentlessly.
04:58She, as a person, like Karishma, is super driven, super ready to work.
05:05Shortly, we're going to be talking to Lawrence, Dan and Priesh.
05:07But first, it's time to hear from my correspondent.

05:23And unfortunately for Lawrence, Dan and Priesh, they didn't provide the clarity, confidence or conviction needed to justify the business
05:33risk.

05:38And this is going to be a hard final decision.

06:47Honestly, the commitment.
06:48Is that the sales technique you generally use?
06:50Don't get me wrong.
06:51I was dialed up a bit more.
06:52I'm not sitting there on Zoom calls being a...
06:55But like, it was dialed up from where I usually am.
06:58But like, it did get the crowd coming in.
07:01So like, just run it and just enjoy myself.
07:03It was such a good laugh.
07:05Well, it was great.

07:06It showed initiative.
07:07We love it.
07:08Let's chat about the interviews, okay?
07:10The ultimate selling task, really, because you're selling yourself.
07:14How do you think you did in them?
07:16Listen, I just wanted to be myself.
07:18Like, I did as much as I could throughout the process.
07:19It's so intense.
07:21You've got to believe in it to be there.
07:23And like, I always believe in trying to find better ways to do things.
07:25And the ideas in the business plan, they're all things that I've seen in my day job that could be
07:31better and could be improved.
07:32So like, I just wanted to...
07:34I had two choices, really.
07:35I could either sit there and put my tail between my legs and just go, sorry, sorry, sorry.
07:38Or I could like, go out there and try and really back myself and stand by what I believed in.
07:43You mentioned that actually, weirdly, you like job interviews.
07:46Do you still like job interviews?
07:48Yeah, I do.
07:48I actually really enjoyed the day.
07:50I mean, even after Claude kicked me out, I came downstairs, I was cracking jokes.
07:53Like, I was like, yeah, I think he really likes it, actually.
07:56But like, he didn't like it.
07:59He didn't like it.
08:00But I think they all, to be fair, saw ambition, really.
08:05They appreciated the scales to which you were reaching.
08:09But felt maybe the business plan let you down a bit, that you're in the business of, you know, people
08:13and personality.
08:14And that actually the business plan maybe didn't reflect that.
08:16Yeah, I mean, it was one of those things that like, I work in tech PR quite a lot.
08:21So I understand the elements of putting tech into something.
08:24So I worked with Octopus Energy when I first started working PR.
08:27And they took tech and put it into energy.
08:30And then there's Uber.
08:31And like, PR is an industry that hasn't happened before yet.
08:33And it's starting to emerge.
08:35But I'm so much a believer in people that like, I don't want tech to come along and replace people.
08:41I want it to really help people.
08:42Listen, I went in there with something I believed in.
08:45And it didn't work out.
08:46Well, I've got to pitch my idea to some, you know, serious people.
08:50And I've got feedback that I can take forward as well.
08:53Harry, as Ricky, how do you think Lawrence did in the interviews?
08:56Look, I think the best thing about your interviews particularly is not only do you just stand your ground,
09:00but it was always at the end of the interview, you were the most respectful.
09:04Like, no matter, you are awful.
09:06You are getting hammered on occasions.
09:07You're like, really appreciate that.
09:08I'll take that on board.
09:09Like, thank you very much.
09:10And you almost would bow to them.
09:11And your respect shown shows a lot about your character as an individual.
09:16And part of this investment process is about identifying the right person to invest in.
09:20And it's an opportunity for you to show everyone, which you clearly have done, what it's about.
09:25Harriet, how did you find Lawrence's interview experience?
09:29I thought you did very well.
09:30And I noticed in the series you really knew when to admit you were wrong.
09:35And I think that's a very valuable skill that you can take into all throughout your business.
09:40Same thing with the interviews.
09:42You were amazing at the humble element.
09:45And honestly, to me, as a person that doesn't run a business, that seems really important for business.
09:50I'm sure that, like, in those rooms where you can accept, hey, I'm wrong, or hey, this isn't right,
09:55or, okay, I accept your sort of feedback.
09:58That, to me, was another level of professionalism that I saw from you.
10:02I also liked watching you, Lawrence.
10:04I'm not going to lie.
10:04Oh, thank you.
10:05You feeding the goats and mucking them out was one of my favourite moments in the entire series.
10:10I did just want to have fun.
10:11Like, it's such a unique experience getting to do this.
10:14Like, when would you ever be going to Hong Kong and then cleaning goat poo the next week or, you
10:19know, selling in a market?
10:20Like, it's such a unique experience.
10:22You get to just enjoy it.
10:23Like, and I really did as much as I could.
10:25Just, I really wanted to enjoy it.
10:26And I think you could tell that you were enjoying the entire process.
10:29There was an emotional moment when you spoke about doing it for your family and for your wife.
10:34How much have they enjoyed watching you doing the whole thing?
10:37So, I mean, they've just absolutely loved it.
10:40My wife wanted me to do the show.
10:42That's the only reason I did it.
10:43You know, for my parents, you know, my dad, some Yiddish for you, the big Gunster Macher.
10:47He's the big guy around town.
10:48Everyone wants to talk to him.
10:49He's loving it.
10:50My wife is so proud.
10:51And I'm so, I'm just so grateful for her support.
10:55And I wouldn't have been here or be the person that I am without her love and support.
10:58And I'm so, like, I'm so grateful for the opportunity to make her proud.
11:02And now it's about building stuff for us for the future.
11:04And that's really what this was all about for me.
11:06And, I mean, the really last thing I say is that, like, I just want to pay a moment to,
11:10like,
11:10my father-in-law passed away during watching it whilst back.
11:13And I'm so grateful that I've got to do him proud, my family proud, my wife proud.
11:17It just, it does.
11:19And that's why I was crying at the end of episode 10 is for my family.
11:22And I'm very grateful for that.
11:24Well done.
11:24And, I mean, you made it all the way to week 11.
11:27That is no mean feat.
11:29Looking back, were there standout moments that you think, oh, I'll remember that forever?
11:34I mean, obviously, selling in the market is, like, absolutely different gravy.
11:38Like, that was for the chicken and egg task.
11:40I just was like, I'm just going to go out there and have fun.
11:42Like, I just want to enjoy it.
11:44And I didn't want to just be a passenger.
11:46I really wanted to, I was like, I'll do stuff every week.
11:49And if I get fired for being myself, whatever.
11:51You got stuck in.
11:52Exactly.
11:53And then if you get fired for being quiet or something like that, I was like, I'm not like that.
11:57I'd regret it forever.
11:58And then, obviously, in the Isle of Wight, the big lads stay out.
12:02Unbelievable.
12:03I'm sorry, Connor was right.
12:04It was a big lads stay out.
12:05Like, he was spot on with all of that.
12:07And obviously, the people.
12:08Like, such a great time with the people.
12:11But, yeah, goats and selling in the market is just always going to be a memory.
12:14Well, I hope you got to keep the cap.

12:21I had to buy a sunflower hat off Amazon for like eight quid.

12:55I'm trying to not just think about one product.
12:57I'm trying to think of like a whole brand name and conception.

13:06And then I'd like to start playing around with some colours if that's okay.
13:09Maybe like a racing green.
13:10And if I could just duplicate that whole thing, because I want to switch it around.
13:13I just want to see some ideas come to life.

13:23I mean, I think that's what they call being in flow.
13:26Yeah, absolutely.
13:27It's like in the zone.
13:28It looked like you thoroughly enjoyed that.
13:30Was it working solo?
13:31You didn't have to, you know, navigate anybody else.
13:34You were high on the prize.
13:36I think being on my own and doing what I do day in, day out, you know,
13:40and not having any distractions and other people's input,
13:42it was just quite nice for me just to focus and do the best for my team
13:45to have hopefully secured us our win.
13:49Let's chat week 11.
13:50How was it watching the interviews back?
13:53Do you know, I was really happy with them.
13:56You know, I think I've come a long way in the process
13:58and I had some fantastic feedback.
14:00I mean, every single interview that I had,
14:02I came out with a big smile on my face.
14:04I took on a lot of really great feedback.
14:06I've been in the industry.
14:07I've been engrossed in my business since 17.
14:09So, you know, I felt as prepared as I could be going instant.
14:14Yeah.
14:14What was fascinating in your interviews,
14:16really fascinating, Dan,
14:17is you were utterly composed with, as you say, you know your business.
14:21It's the first time I've ever seen someone really ask lots of questions back.
14:26You ask questions back in one interview.
14:28In another interview, you almost had Claude pitching Lord Sugar to you.
14:32It was a really weird role reverse moment
14:34that I don't think has ever been seen on this process before.
14:37And that just shows, A, you know your stuff, but you're inquisitive.
14:41You wanted to understand the value it brought to you
14:43because your business is really important to you.
14:45So, I've got to say, hats off to you.
14:47I've never seen that happen before.
14:48Well, thank you very much.
14:49And I was, you know, I was in two minds
14:52because, you know, it was a big thing giving up half of my existing business
14:55and I really didn't know what to do.
14:57What you were presenting, the business you were presenting to Lord Sugar,
15:01he wanted then to take 50% of the existing business,
15:05which was kind of a feeder business,
15:07but not really on the table for discussion from your perspective.
15:10Do you think you made the right decision?
15:14I think in that moment in time, I probably did.
15:18Now that I'm looking back upon it, you know, I am still open to investment.
15:21I'm still open to being mentored.
15:23And I think for me, it was never really about the money.
15:25It was about getting the mentorship and the guidance
15:27to help me really take my business to the next level
15:29that I know it can go to.
15:31You know, over the past 10 years,
15:33I've built such a great name and brand for myself in the space.
15:36And, you know, the clients we work with,
15:37they really respect our brand, which is halfway there.
15:41Yeah. Harriet, do you think he made the right call?
15:43Or should he have gone with Lord Sugar?
15:46Or the potential, at least?
15:48I've got to tell you, I think you did make the right decision.
15:50I, before I knew the outcome, I said out loud,
15:54I said it out loud, so it destroyed, still true.
15:57Yeah.
15:58That I thought that you made the absolute right decision,
16:00because to me, that was a business that you weren't coming in to sell
16:03and you'd already created that and that was a different thing.
16:06But that is probably why I'm not in business.
16:09Yeah.
16:10Because I don't really know.
16:12But my heart said, Dan, you slayed the house down boots
16:15and you made the right decision.
16:16Well, thank you.
16:17And, you know, since being on the show,
16:19we have now merged young professionals apprenticeships
16:21and young professionals graduates into one,
16:23so we are now growing it as one big business.
16:25And I think, in hindsight, it probably made a lot of sense to do that.
16:30And it's a pipeline for you, right?
16:31You're putting the funnel at the front as they start their careers,
16:33they come through, it goes into your next business.
16:34You can flow it all through and actually connect your consultants
16:37across both businesses without too lots of cost matters.
16:39So it is the best logical decision
16:41and I'm glad that's the pathway you're taking there.
16:43Yeah, yeah.
16:43And you saved on consultancy fees.
16:45Yeah.
16:46You know?
16:46Yeah.
16:48I imagine some consultant would have charged you a lot of money
16:50to tell you that.
16:51Very true.
16:52You know what I mean?
16:53You've got a freebie, didn't you?
16:54That was probably 100 grand worth of consultancy advice
16:55you got in those interviews.
16:57Yeah, there you go.
16:57And I've taken a lot away from being in the process, yeah.
17:00And I think we saw that growth actually quite clearly, you know,
17:04that kind of you were hung at the back a little bit to begin with
17:07and you have spoken and been quite open about how being autistic
17:10and dyslexic affected your time in the process.
17:14Do you think that was particularly challenging
17:16when dealing with a big group of people?
17:19Yeah, hugely, hugely challenging
17:20and it's something I've had to cope with pretty much all of my life,
17:24you know, with Asperger's being put into very new surroundings
17:26and situations and especially with 19 other very big characters,
17:32you know, it took a lot for me to process
17:34and I'm someone that quite likes structure
17:36and knows what I'm doing
17:37and a lot of the time you never really know what was happening.
17:40So it did take me a little while to get used to the surroundings
17:43that I was in, used to the candidates that I was on task with.
17:46But, you know, I slowly came through and, you know, settled in.
17:50And I think also with my dyslexia,
17:53it takes me quite a long time to process information,
17:56you know, reading things.
17:57Which you don't always have in this process either.
18:00So I think I coped okay.
18:02It's more for the other candidates at the front
18:04and that didn't listen to the value that you brought to the table
18:06because we could all watch it and we're like,
18:08this guy is right, listen to Dan.
18:11I also do think that I'm really glad that you brought up your Asperger's
18:15because to me, it was one of your shining qualities,
18:17the way you approach things and your demeanour
18:19and the way in which you go into business.
18:21I think it's in some ways,
18:22even though it's extremely difficult to live with in certain areas,
18:26it's also a real quality to have in business.
18:29Yeah.
18:30And that's part of why I fell in love with you a bit on the show
18:32because I thought you came across brilliantly.
18:34You're so fair.
18:35The way you approach things is so calm and collected
18:38and sort of direct.
18:40It just really, it was brilliant.
18:42I think you did really well.
18:43I loved every moment of it,
18:44being able just to, you know, switch off
18:46and really focus on being in the process,
18:49you know, travelling, meeting lots of different people
18:51and just throwing myself into each task as I could.
18:54I think you have, you know, three fans here.

19:28My mum adds it anyway to cooking.

19:31so I'm using this extra butter in my curry.

19:35Karishma, this sauce, is this for my curry or for your rice?
19:38I don't get it, because it doesn't say in here to add,
19:40but I'm just going to add it.

19:46Lovely to meet you guys.
19:47Honestly, what didn't you put in that curry?
19:52Well, I'm Asian, so we just whack whatever we feel is fit.
19:56Whatever's in the cupboard, we just whack it in.
19:58I think it's a beautiful approach.

20:04I mean, the parsley was a big ingredient.

21:09And that's when I knew it must have been horrible in that room.

21:13That was the chill cocktail.
21:15Yeah, no, I mean, to be fair,

21:17Obviously, you've got the cameras,
21:18you've got him staring at you,
21:20like the desk of him making it there,
21:21and then he brings out the trolley.
21:23When Mike came with the trolley,
21:25I thought, oh, it was...
21:27I thought he was going to make you make something really hard.
21:29Like, I thought he was going to give you a cocktail
21:31that, like, no one knows the ingredients.
21:32Oh, like a Manhattan or some sort of...
21:34Yeah, like, I wouldn't know what was in that,
21:35but I feel like every single person on the earth drinks a Paloma.
21:37But I think it's just because you know what Paloma is.
21:38I actually love a Paloma result.
21:39Just to be clear,
21:40I would have no idea what was in it.
21:42When he asked that question,
21:43I went, there must be thousands of cocktails.
21:45How on earth is he going to know this
21:46without the little rest of people?
21:47Yeah, Paloma's very London.
21:49Yeah, and then to be fair...
21:50That's true.
21:51It's just obviously it's on-the-spot thinking
21:53and you're just under that pressure.
21:54And then obviously I had Linda as well at the beginning.
21:57Well, let's talk about that
21:58because she was the first one up.
22:00So did that sort of set the tone for you, do you feel?
22:02Yeah, I think so,
22:03because obviously people don't realise
22:06how tough these interviews are.
22:07Like, it's not going to a job interview
22:09where you can prepare for, like, you know,
22:10what's going to come up.
22:11It's not like a job description.
22:12Obviously, it's a business plan.
22:13And then, obviously, I know it was in the business plan,
22:15but then the questions they ask...
22:17And the thing is, they're just so in front of you.
22:19So I was like, we've got a bit of distance.
22:21So it was like proximity more than anything.
22:22It's like a lion breathing into your face.
22:26You gave them a look every time
22:28when they're about to speak.
22:29You had these eyes, these puppy dog eyes,
22:31looking like, come on, what nice are you going to say?
22:32Like, you're really goading them
22:34to come to you with something nice.
22:35And I thought they would say at least one nice thing.
22:37No.
22:37But even Claudine didn't say one nice thing.
22:40I was just like, do you know what?
22:41Just get me out of here.
22:41They said you were a lovely, effervescent guy.
22:44Yeah.
22:45Maybe not to your face.
22:48I think starting with Linda is fairly...
22:52It's very hard to come back from that.
22:54Yeah.
22:54Yeah, like everyone else had a different one
22:55to start off with.
22:56So for me, it was just, ooh.
22:58They did say, however,
22:59that your business plan was a little less developed.
23:02I think the business plan was there,
23:04but I just don't think they saw it as like,
23:05oh, it's going to go anywhere.
23:07Okay.
23:07So that's what I think the rational how behind it was,
23:09which was fair enough.
23:10Or the confusion between the bars and the products.
23:12Yeah, exactly.
23:13They probably thought it was two separate businesses.
23:15But then I was thinking I was entering both the retail world
23:17and, you know, the corporate world and the events industry.
23:20So it was entering, you know, two different industries
23:22and then you get, you know, money in two different ways.
23:25The advice, which felt a bit brutal, even watching,
23:29was to stick out your day job.
23:31Yeah.
23:32How did that work out?
23:34Well, they're completely wrong.
23:36Literally.
23:38I didn't listen to any of them.
23:40I didn't listen to one of them
23:41because I'm actually opening up my own bar,
23:43my own restaurant.
23:44Are you doing curries?
23:45Please tell me you're doing curries.
23:47Yes, doing curries.
23:47With parsley.
23:48Exactly.
23:49That's going to be my famous curry on there.
23:51I'm really excited to try it
23:52because I don't think it would have been too spicy for me.
23:53Do you know what?
23:54Funny you say that.
23:55Tim actually liked it.
23:56Tim said it was fine for him as well.
23:58We can handle the spice.
23:59Whereas I wasn't thinking about the guests.
24:01Some of the guests.
24:02I was just thinking what I would like for dinner.
24:03Some of the girlies couldn't quite handle the spice.
24:06Will you say that your passion is making people smile?
24:09Were there moments?
24:10I mean, it felt like you just loved the entire process.
24:14What sticks out?
24:15Oh, do you know what?
24:15I thought the process was incredible.
24:17Like, I made lifelong friends.
24:19And even just to learn, like,
24:20you learn a lot about yourself.
24:22Like, even, like, I've realised from, you know,
24:23especially in boardroom too,
24:25when I got called back in thinking I was safe.
24:27And then I realised you need to stick up for yourself.
24:29And obviously I've got that second chance to remain.
24:30And then look where I am now,
24:32in terms of, you know, got to the final five.
24:33But, like, it's, you know, you learn a lot.
24:35It was just such a great experience.
24:37I really want to go back again.
24:38Oh, well, you can't.
24:39I'm sorry.
24:39But you embraced it with such enthusiasm.
24:42And it's such a gorgeous quality, actually.
24:44Oh, it really is.
24:44And you didn't win.
24:45So maybe you are allowed next year.
24:46Yeah, exactly.
24:47Maybe you can take their ideas now into practice.
24:49I'll do that to practice.
24:51Lord Sugar said that you're, like, a lucky charm.
24:54Which, again, he was like, you made it to the final five.
24:57Like, how is, what, what?
24:59Well, to be fair, my advice was be to Lord Sugar's.

25:02You could have fired me at any point.
25:04You could have got rid of me at any point.
25:06It's his show.
25:07He can make the rules.
25:08He could have got rid of me as week seven we gave.
25:09But obviously he liked me.
25:11And obviously he just said that.
