00:00Let's go out front.
00:04And good evening, I'm Erin Burnett.
00:06And out front tonight, we have this breaking news just coming in.
00:08As I said, literally at the 11th hour, Trump backing down
00:11after threatening that a, quote,
00:13whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again.
00:18Horrific and unacceptable words,
00:20which just moments ago at the 11th hour, before his deadline,
00:23Trump now has essentially rescinded,
00:26obviously not deleting the post, but changing the outlook,
00:29saying, subject to the Islamic Republic of Iran,
00:31note that the ceasefire is based on Iran opening the Strait of Hormuz, right?
00:35And Iran has not, as I said, yet formally,
00:37we're awaiting words from Tehran,
00:39but they have not responded to this
00:41and to what Trump is calling a double-sided ceasefire.
00:44Up until this moment, the president of the United States,
00:46E, in Qatar and in Bahrain,
00:48Saudi Arabia says it intercepted five missiles
00:50fired towards the eastern region of the country
00:53moments before Trump announced the ceasefire.
00:55Elena Trin is out front, live outside the White House.
00:58And, Elena, what more are you learning about this
01:02and, you know, where we are in this,
01:05how real this is, and what it actually entails?
01:09Yes, absolutely.
01:10Elena, thank you very much.
01:11And as Elena said, her reporting here,
01:13I know that Israel is part of the two-week ceasefire,
01:16crucial, as she points out, obviously,
01:18whether they were involved.
01:20Everyone is here with me.
01:21Colonel, let me just start with you.
01:23We're at the 11th hour.
01:25The president of the United States put out a tweet
01:27that I think that anybody who's honest
01:29would be ashamed of today
01:31and has now backed off of that.
01:34That's the outcome everybody wanted.
01:36It does mean, of course,
01:38that that's the threat that he was willing to level.
01:41So where are we?
01:43If Iran responds soon,
01:45we don't know what they're going to say,
01:47and they say that, yes,
01:48they're going to do this for two weeks,
01:49what does it mean?
01:50So basically, Aaron,
01:51what we're talking about
01:52is a pause in fighting for both sides,
01:54more troops in the region if they want to.
01:57They also, the Iranians, of course,
01:58also have the possibility
02:00of moving some of their weapon systems around.
02:03More missiles could do.
02:05All of that is, I think,
02:06part of this two-week period.
02:08Which, of course, is what Iran did last time.
02:10And, you know,
02:11being in the middle of a negotiation
02:12and saying he's going to let it run out
02:14is what Trump did.
02:15Well, he's done multiple times,
02:16but he did it last summer.
02:17And then he bombed.
02:18Right?
02:19So it's very hard to know
02:20if anybody's good for their word here.
02:22There's nobody with a track record.
02:23Pushed regime change.
02:25A strategical,
02:26a lofty strategical void
02:27throughout the region.
02:29Are alliances broken?
02:31The very trust in the United States
02:33certainly not in this way.
02:35Right.
02:35Well, I mean,
02:35their initial estimate
02:36was, what, a billion dollars a day?
02:38So you'd be at $40 billion already,
02:40just off of the estimate
02:41that the Pentagon actually put out there.
02:44Nazila, you know,
02:45I know you received messages
02:46we're able to get some
02:46from friends and family in Iran today.
02:49So when they are,
02:51I guess it would have been
02:52the middle of the afternoon,
02:53and they see,
02:55maybe they even heard from you,
02:56right?
02:56I mean, an entire civilization.
02:58A whole civilization will die tonight,
03:00never to be brought back again.
03:03So now there is apparently a ceasefire.
03:06Is there any trust?
03:08As well.
03:09So I think when they wake up
03:11or if they're still up in Iran,
03:13they wait for Tehran's response.
03:15Of course, you know,
03:16what Trump had posted
03:17about wiping out
03:18an entire civilization
03:19and bombing all the bridges
03:20and power plants in the country.
03:22You know, I know people
03:23have been talking about war crimes,
03:25and I mean, obviously,
03:25that's not something
03:26he's worried about, okay?
03:27He doesn't see it that way,
03:28and it's not something
03:29that seems to concern him.
03:31But do the threats alone
03:34constitute anything?
03:35I don't know what he did,
03:36except to a threat of violence
03:38to terrorize the civilian population.
03:40That is the Geneva...
03:41...today,
03:42about whether members
03:44of the military
03:45and some of the most senior commanders
03:46would have gone along with this,
03:49right,
03:49if it was to go do this.
03:50And I understand,
03:51CARG, you could say,
03:52okay, well,
03:53there's military use for it,
03:54and maybe there's also
03:55civilian benefit to something,
03:56so how does it count?
03:57Someone can play in gray area
03:59if they want to.
04:00But do you think
04:01that there would have been
04:02a refusal to carry out an order
04:05if this had come?
04:06That would have been really
04:07the quintessential question
04:09of the Trump era, I think,
04:10and, you know, 8GC.
04:12So you could make an argument...
04:14Well, you can't extricate
04:15the IRGC from the Iranian economy.
04:17No, that's the whole point.
04:19And that's part of the problem
04:20in making that decision.
04:22...nation, okay,
04:23is a threat to humanity
04:27and all people living there,
04:28obviously civilians.
04:29So when you saw that post this morning,
04:31I will admit,
04:32when I saw it,
04:33I was actually listening to NPR,
04:35and I had to go,
04:37I said,
04:37it can't be real.
04:39And, I mean,
04:40some people might say,
04:41well, how can you not believe that
04:42at this point?
04:42But I didn't.
04:43I went and checked it
04:43because I couldn't believe
04:44such a thing actually
04:45could have been said.
04:46You're an Iranian-American,
04:48so, you know,
04:49you have family upholds
04:50here in the United States.
04:51And I think if there is one...
04:53I mean, and I know
04:53we're going to talk about it.
04:54You have people,
04:56conspiracy theorists
04:56and others in MAGA land.
04:57This is it.
04:58I draw the line.
04:59Alex Jones,
05:00Candace Owens,
05:00people have done that.
05:02Has anything really changed,
05:04do you think,
05:05in this moment
05:06of what he did today?
05:08I think so.
05:09I mean,
05:09I think people
05:10were very worried
05:11that he would...
05:11...of people
05:13that will live in the moment.
05:14That's what the markets do.
05:15So the markets,
05:16of course,
05:16right now,
05:16in futures trading,
05:17they have gone up.
05:18Because guess what?
05:19Trump has backed off.
05:20And there will be some
05:20who will call it,
05:21you know, taco.
05:22Trump always chickens out.
05:23A truth,
05:24which is that
05:25he makes giant threats
05:27that he does not
05:28follow through on.
05:29Yeah.
05:29So it's one thing
05:30for everyone to say,
05:31well, nobody wanted him
05:31to do this.
05:32And it's another to say
05:33that the word
05:34of the President
05:34of the United States
05:35is now something
05:36that people do not think
05:37that they can take
05:38at his word.
05:38That they expect it
05:39to be just a quick
05:40trading opportunity
05:41every single time.
05:43I feel like the markets
05:44are a little...
05:44Bring us back
05:45to maybe where we were.
05:47This is...
05:47And again,
05:48we're awaiting a response
05:49from Tehran.
05:49But to this point,
05:51and I think this is
05:51really important
05:52for everyone, right?
05:53The Strait of Hormuz,
05:55I remember going there
05:56last summer
05:56during the last war, okay?
05:58And that was because
06:00it was the place
06:01that if this,
06:02you know,
06:03escalated,
06:03Iran could close the strait.
06:04And they didn't do it.
06:05Maybe Trump thought
06:06they never would.
06:07Now they have
06:07and they have established
06:08that they can do that, right?
06:10They have established
06:11that they control the strait.
06:13So if they're agreeing
06:15to open it,
06:16he is basically acquiescing
06:17in their ownership
06:19and control of it.
06:20Is he not?
06:21Yes.
06:22And the reason
06:22that this is so
06:23controlled commerce,
06:24they want to exact tolls
06:26on ships that go through there.
06:27We're talking about
06:27a million or two million
06:28per...
06:29...
06:30...
06:30...
06:30achieve strategic victory
06:32if they continue
06:33to go through with it.
06:34Big of a question
06:34to answer in this moment.
06:36But as you look at it
06:37in this tiny sliver
06:38of a perspective
06:39that we now have
06:39with the potential
06:40of a two-week ceasefire
06:42if Iran agrees
06:43and opens the strait
06:44in however that's defined,
06:46does the regime,
06:47is the regime strengthened
06:48by it?
06:49Definitely.
06:50Think about it.
06:51Yeah,
06:52and it's also shifted
06:52geopolitics as well.
06:54I mean,
06:54just in the last few days,
06:55a number of U.S.,
06:56NATO versus Ukraine
06:57and others.
06:58I think that's another
06:59repercussion that's happened
07:00even to the point...
07:01...forced, I think,
07:02today to think about
07:03their own morals
07:03and what they think
07:04is right and wrong
07:05in a way that we are
07:06not frequently asked to do
07:07when it comes to policy
07:08and every person was.
07:09Thank you all very much.
07:10And we are getting
07:11some more breaking news
07:12in here.
07:13Just getting word
07:14from Iran.
07:14The foreign minister
07:16just releasing a statement
07:17and we are going
07:18through that right now.
07:19So we're going to have
07:20that for you
07:20as we get this response
07:22from Iran.
07:23Also breaking,
07:24more missiles being intercepted
07:25across the Gulf
07:26even in the wake
07:27of this announcement
07:27from Trump.
07:28We go live to the region
07:30and what is Trump's thinking
07:32at this crucial moment?
07:33New reporting
07:33from two top journalists
07:34who have spoken to him.
07:36Dissolve four.
07:38The panel in New York
07:39is clear.
07:40Manzo, you can take
07:40the guests off.
07:41Watch your step.
07:42Stand by your break,
07:42master.
07:43In three, two,
07:45effect.
07:45Roll your break,
07:45please, master.
07:47...CNN.
07:47But Israeli officials
07:49now have concerns
07:50about Trump's ceasefire.
07:52New reporting
07:52from our Jeremy Diamond
07:53and Tel Aviv
07:54from Israeli officials
07:55right now.
07:56We're going to go live
07:57there after this.
08:00Thank you, D.C.
08:01Your guests are clear.
08:03Camera four,
08:03take it to the grid.
08:04Stand by your break.
08:05We are back
08:06with the breaking news.
08:07Trump and Iran
08:07both saying
08:08they have agreed
08:08to a ceasefire,
08:11but it is unclear
08:12if they are agreeing
08:13to the same plan
08:14and the ceasefire
08:15as it appears
08:15does acknowledge
08:17Iran's control
08:18of the strait
08:19and whether it's open.
08:20Our White House team
08:21Elena Trin
08:22and Kristen Holmes
08:22are just learning
08:23that the Trump administration
08:24is now preparing
08:25for a potential
08:26in-person meeting
08:27of U.S.
08:27and Iranian officials,
08:28which would be significant
08:29and would likely
08:30take place
08:31in the coming days
08:32in Islamabad, Pakistan.
08:34Pakistani mediators
08:35would be there
08:35along with President Trump's
08:37special envoy Steve Witkoff,
08:38son-in-law Jared Kushner,
08:40both of who were there
08:41when this failed
08:42the first time around,
08:43but this time
08:43Vice President J.D. Vance
08:45apparently may also join,
08:47which is also
08:48a notable development.
08:49Well, thanks very much
08:50for joining us
08:51as our breaking news
08:52coverage continues
08:52here on AC 360
08:54with Anderson Cooper.
08:55It starts now.
