00:00Yehaw! It weighs a ton!
00:02How do you make a carbon bike?
00:04This is the series where we reveal the secrets of producing world tour level bikes.
00:09Part 1. Tooling
00:10Not every brand makes their own moulds, or tooling as it's known,
00:13so it's not something that we get to see very often.
00:16This mould has two parts, so it's what's known as a split mould design,
00:20where each side is milled by a CNC machine,
00:23and then bolted together with pins around the carbon frame.
00:26To make just one XLAB89 mould, over 800kg of billet metal needs to be machined,
00:33to withstand the extreme temperatures and pressures of the curing oven.
00:37There's 15 components that need to be polished until they fit together like a massive bike building puzzle.
00:42Make sure you follow us for part 2 to see what happens next.
